I'm on chapter 8 of my Oleander Sword reread, and I'm aggressively remembering why Aditya irks the ever-loving hell out of me. Aditya somehow has the goddam nerve to say THIS FUCKERY to Rao:

"And if I look in my heart every day and forgive my sister..." Rao opened his eyes, just in time to see the expression of quiet anguish that crossed Aditya's face before it settled into calm once more. "Rao. I must forgive my brother too."

Aditya. SIR. I don't know where you get the balls to look your childhood best friend in the face and go, "I have to forgive the man who murdered your sister," but JESUS H. CHRIST, my dude.

In addition, I don't know where Aditya gets off on "they're equally bad"-ing his siblings. Malini is over here fighting a war, and the reality is, nobody would have given Prince Aditya, penis-haver, the amount of shit they're giving Malini for doing the exact same thing. And in point of fact, Malini is over here PRESERVING the lives of her soldiers as best she can, which isn't something that can be said of her other generals.

Chandra, however, is indiscriminately burning women to death, being a general dick to ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE, and is toxic patriarchy given physical form.

CHANDRA AND MALINI ARE NOT THE SAME, and frankly I'm pretty sure that Aditya would have ultimately proven to be a weak, ineffectual emperor with this kind of judgment and philosophical bent. Thank goodness Malini can see clearly and has stepped the fuck up, because otherwise Chandra was well on his way to burning the world to cleanse it.
