If fairies can't touch iron or eat things that were cooked in cast iron, how could you take your girlfriend to restaurants where they might be cooking with that? How would you know if they used it or not? Wouldn't it kill you?

Roy: *He's a little surprised by this one! He blinks a few times, chuckles nervously, and scratches the back of his neck* Well, that's a bit of a gray area, you see. Okay...I'm about to disclose some Fairy secrets that are generally considered to be pretty hush-hush, but...you know, enough of us have had run-ins with the humans that our weakness to iron is pretty obvious by now, so I think I'm in the clear. I hope...

*shrugs* Anyway, we can't handle the iron directly. At least, not when it's been formed into something. We can handle the ore because it's still in its natural state and hasn't been 'perverted' into something it wasn't meant to be. And there's just something about the metal that magic just doesn't like.

There's naturally occurring iron in some of the food we eat, which is perfectly fine. In fact, we need that for the same reason humans do. And any trace amounts that might leach from a cast iron skillet are so negligible that they aren't a concern at all. Might give us a bit more of a food coma than usual if we eat too much of it, but we'd still be fine. But if I tried to cook with one, I wouldn't even be able to touch it. At the very least, I'd probably pass out.

It seems like a contradiction, I know, but it's about 'natural' VS 'unnatural'. And Mother Nature could see that if this was applied to everything, given the way that mankind was advancing, before long there wouldn't be anything that was safe for us to handle! So, she bent her own rules a little, because this really would have been an issue for us. We can't do metalwork of any kind on our own, but we can use the human-made products without any issues at all. And we don't have to expend enormous amounts of magic to coax a piece of unworked metal into becoming something we can use...which is how our engagement coins are made; they’re similar to a human engagement ring. It's really just easier and a lot less dangerous to disguise ourselves and buy them from the humans. And now in these modern days, we can simply do the whole 'point and click' thing to have them delivered to a PO box where we can just go and pick it up.

As long as those products aren't made of iron, because it was too late to reverse our weakness to that, and while Mother Nature can bend her own rules at her discretion, she can't break them.
