      David and Louis remember their World Tours together in their youth

Louis recalls their first tour:- 

‘I took it upon myself to keep a diary on the ship for the journey. On this page... - Everywhere he (David) went they turned out in their thousands. We visited every state and every capital on the programme. He was always met with tremendous affection! In fact, it was often a problem protecting him from his enthusiastic admirers. The other staff thought this was funny but it seemed to me to upset David quite a lot. He didn’t admit this of course, how could he? But when he got a rare moment to himself he confided this to me. I love to be around people, actually David does too, but he doesn’t feel quite comfortable when people grab at him and the like. Quite early on he started the practice of shaking with his left hand because his right hand was almost crushed with all the warmth of peoples greetings. He worked terribly hard and never spared himself all through the tour. He became very tired and we had a programme which allowed almost no free time. On this our first tour I got to know him very well - I soon realised that under his smile, and despite the fun we had, he was a lonely and sad person and at this time he was liable to deep depressions. 

I wrote home to my mother:-

‘I’m having such a great time but it’s very difficult to keep David cheerful. At times he gets so depressed, he’s told me more than once he’d give anything to change places with me. 

What a friend David has become to me, he may be nearly 5 years older, but in some respects he’s the same age as me...he’s such a marvellous person and a kind soul, and I suppose the best friend I have ever had.

 I do wish David wasn’t so sad. I ‘act the clown’ with him to try and make things a little easier for him, and to pass the time better.  

We saw such wonderful places and met so many people from all walks of life... and carrying a fair amount of responsibility!

David recalls their second tour and the death of Louis Senior:-

 ‘I happened to be stopping with the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland at he time, when Dickie got the very sad news of his fathers death. He died suddenly of heart failure, this was the most tremendous shock... To me he was a wonderful man he was Admiral of the Fleet, the same as Dickie later became, and I admired him as a great sea-man. 

...I was about to start on another World Tour, this time to India and the Far East. Dickie had been with me on my first journey to Australia and to New Zealand and he had been a great companion and help on that long arduous trip. I was therefore anxious for him to go with me to India and Japan, and I believe he was anxious to go with me too.

I...I have a letter I sent to his mother. long ago... it wrote, ‘Thank you for your letter. Dickie’s friendship means so much to me, and that I just couldn’t have done this trip if I hadn’t got him with me. 

He means even more to me now than he ever did as he is now a man and not so much of a boy as he was last year, it makes such a difference.

He’s a happy cheery chap and now an understanding friend.

I had the idea of drawing these two lovely fools pair ice skating since episode 3, but because I’m working holiday season, I’ve been plenty busy. So imagine my excitement when I saw the last episode! This show destroyed me, in a good way. I have so much to say about the series, but I shall save it for another post. In the meantime, feast your gluttonous eyes on these dorks.
