Castiel is a mid-20's freelance writer living in Manhattan with his best friend from college, Tracey (ofc). A socially awkward guy, likes to stay indoors most nights. But one Friday night, Tracey decides that it's time they went out to a synth retro night club (they both have a love of the eighties) and had some fun. Castiel incidentally meets Sam, the most beautiful man he's ever laid his eyes on. Is it possible that he's fallen head over heels? Sam appears to be too good to be true, but Cas has no idea that Sam feels the same...

Meanwhile, Tracey meets Sam's older brother Dean and decides that she wants to toy with him all night.

This moment is generally played off as humorous, but I think it actually says a lot about their relationship. This isn't the sort of thing that Castiel would ever say to Dean, because he knows that Dean still holds it, and every other thing Castiel has done that Dean didn't like, against him. Whereas Castiel brings up what he did to Sam without any reservations due to simple indignation that Sam accused him of being a bad liar, because he knows without even having to think about it that Sam won't get upset. Sam was the only one who still believed in Castiel at the beginning of s7, despite the fact that of him, Dean, and Bobby, Castiel inflicted the most harm upon Sam. Castiel feels safe with Sam, so safe that he'll bring up the worst thing he ever did to Sam and know that it'll be alright.

Their relationship is one of the purest things in Supernatural I can't believe it took me until s13 to see it.

I showed my boyfriend the look Sam and Castiel share when Castiel comes to life in 13x06, the way they gasped each other's names when Castiel came back to the bunker in 15x07, and told him about 14x15(the bed sharing and beautiful hair), and he said he could totally see it, and that it was a lot more blatant than he'd always assumed. Especially the look they share in 13x06. Like come on.

When I started watching Supernatural I fully expected to ship Destiel when I reached season four, because it was pretty much everywhere on my Dashboard. Everyone I followed for whatever fandom seemed to ship it and two of my friends who had watched the show long before me shippe it as well. I was really looking forward to reading all the shiny new fanfiction I would be able to read then. But once Castiel joined up with Sam and Dean Destiel didn't appeal to me at all. I could see why someone might ship it in the early seasons, because an angel falling in love with a soul he saved from hell is something that can be interesting. But I thought Sam and Castiel where much more interesting together, with Castiel going from „Sam is an abomination with demon blood“ to „Sam is my friend“. And Sam actually cared about Castiel, unlike Dean.

There was a lot more going on in terms of relationship and character development.

Dean seemed to barely tolerate Castiel and even that only when he was usefull. Castiel deserved much, much better then Dean and he deserved a better ending then whatever that thing in 15.18 was. They did him so dirty in that episode, making everything he had ever done essentially about Dean and calling him the most selfless person he had ever met. Dean! Who, just one episode prior, wanted to murder the person Castiel considered his son, so Dean could be free! What on earth is selfless about that? I'd really like to know what the hell the writers were thinking, when they came up with this bullshit.

Where I can understand someone shipping Destiel in the early seasons, I don't see it at all in the later ones. Dean was always a dick, but he became unbearable, at least for me, with his anger issues and rage. I saw someone call season 15 the Destiel season and just... Where? Did we watch the same show? My personal impression was, that Dean and Castiel didn't really get along at all and an one point Castiel wanted to leave with Jack. Which I'm all for, get away from Dean and please take Sam with you. They all deserved a nice life away fom Dean and his awful behaviour.

Favorite Sastiel headcanon? I'll go first.

Maybe this is cheating, but I wrote a fic based on it. I headcanon that sometime between season 13 and 14 Sam and Castiel started sharing a bed and they would watch The Great British Baking Show while Castiel stroked Sam's hair, letting tiny little bits of grace leave his fingers as he did so so that Sam could sleep without nightmares. And that closeness was why Sam was so anxious and hurt the two times Castiel ran off in s15 without letting Sam know first or returning any of his calls or messages.

What I love about Sam leaving that note for Castiel in 15x11 is that he very easily could have just texted Castiel. In fact, he probably did. But Sam didn't hear back from Castiel before they left, and he wanted to make extra sure that Castiel would know where they were, so he took the time to write him a note. And I love that Sam only signed it with his name, indicating that he in particular was letting Castiel know. There's something intimate about it, especially since people often lump Sam and Dean together as if they're one entity. Sam could have signed it with both of their names, since they were both going, but he didn't. It was like the show wanted us to see Sam and Castiel's relationship as its own unique thing. Sam isn't merely an extension of Dean. His friendship with Castiel exists outside of that.

Honestly, it felt like season 15 amped up the intensity of Sam and Castiel's relationship, which had already been increasing in strength consistently as each season passed. Sam's fixation with Castiel's whereabouts when Castiel took off without telling him, how Castiel gasped his name and Sam did in return when they were reunited in ep 7, the way Castiel hid behind Sam from both Dean and Chuck at times, and that's just off the top of my head.

Damn. I really need to do an analysis of their s15 relationship.

Not to be trash for Sastiel on main, but I'll never not love that Castiel looks at Sam like this:

There's this intensity, and honestly respect in his gaze. Sam introduced himself while showing Castiel reverence, and you can really see that in the way Castiel is looking at him. In the fact that he entirely ignores Dean asking who Uriel is and instead gives Sam this look while asking if he'd stopped Samhain. Castiel doesn't ask if the two of them(Sam and Dean) had stopped Samhain. He directs the question specifically at Sam, only acknowledging Dean when Dean aggressively demands to know why Castiel is asking. And you can really see the difference in the way Castiel looks at Dean:

His expression turns flat and businesslike, as does his tone(which I don't have the resources to capture, but had been much gentler). There's no more respect and softness at all. Largely, I think, because for Castiel, being respected is hugely important. Dean has shown him nothing but hostile disrespect from the moment they met. Whereas Sam immediately showed him a great deal of respect and reverence. I don't think it's an accident that, in the same episode in which he meets Sam, whom I'm certain Castiel didn't expect to behave the way he did, that Castiel begins to express doubts. Dean is supposed to be an instrument of Heaven, but treats him like shit. Sam is supposed to be an instrument of Hell, but treats him with worship. That must have had a significant impact.
