Portrait of a tired person in work space. I’ve spent the last few weeks prepping for my USA tour. Packing and shipping boxes, checking in with my loom manufacturer, sending emails. I just can’t wait to get on that plane! First stop @theweavingkind first weavers retreat in Colorado! My submission for @theweavingkind FEBRUARY 2017 CHALLENGE: NATURAL COLOR by Vanessa Lauria. Inspired by a beautiful, large, flowering cactus I have in my backyard. I wanted to come up with something I don't normally do or am comfortable with so I decided on a heap of little round weavings collaged together in a frame. This is an entry for a weaving retreat scholarship. Heads up, this is very long: . . . @theweavingkind @themakerie @echoviewnc #echoviewloves I started drafting this in my head about a week and a half ago, while scrolling through instagram on a moderately crowded nyc subway. I'd been eyeing this makerie, but hadn't been setting my hopes out and suddenly I had inspiration thrown at me. Still I failed to put pen to paper (fingers to keys?) because I wanted to first /make/ something for my submission. I felt that it'd have more meaning than just throwing up a picture of something I've made in the past. I told myself I was going to clean up my kitchen (the only place I can clamp down) as soon as I got back to my apartment so I get sleigh my cricket, but I was tired, and I sat down to rest instead. And that's about how the next several days went. I now worry I might not have time to start something at all because I now find myself on a train to the airport to pickup my girlfriend who's visiting me for the next week. Not-quite-coincidentally, she's coming to me from Colorado. I lived there on and off for several years, first for school, then breifly to live with her and try to find work. Life happened, and I found myself back on the East Coast indefinitely. There are a lot of things I love living in New York, and a lot of things I didn't love about Denver, but I still miss it terribly. I miss looking at the mountains every day. I miss real nature. I miss open spaces. I've been craving an escape. Getting a chance to explore weaving, fiber, and myself back in Colorado would mean so much to me. I sometimes struggle to find inspiration and I constantly look to learn new things. I discovered fiber arts towards the end of my education, so I wasn't able to explore it as much as I would have liked. A retreat like this seems like such a wonderful opportunity for me. Time dedicated to learning new techniques/crafts and being present with myself. Weaving especially can bring me into a particularly mindfull place. The location sweetens the deal. Colorado is an important place to me and returning there for a a retreat like this is an absoulte dream. --- Many of the workshops offered seem wonderful. Two that particularly have my eye are Foraging Inspiration with @janelle_pietrzak and Exploring Alternate Weaving Materials with @luposkitt. All my life I've felt somewhat torn between my love of the outdoors and the rest of my life. The deeper into the wilderness I go, the more the rest of the world fades away, bringing many stresses with it (even when the journey to get there is wrought with its own stresses and challenges). But even short jaunts away can provide this kind of escape. It's so freeing to just be able to sit and be; the inspiration struggle I mentioned earlier is lessened. As for alternative materials, I've always taken an interest in found-object type projects and mixed media. In fact, that was a big part of my earliest weaving work. My first-ever frame loom project included wires from a broken laptop charger and brown paper bag. My final project for the class had rows of 35mm film amongst the weft. I constantly want to hang on to all sorts of junk (not ideal in a nyc apparment!) because I think they could be interesting down the line. This workshop seems right up my alley! I've been subscribed to @theweavingkind 's prompts and community for a couple of years, so when I first heard about teaming up with @themakerie I yearned desperately to be able to go, but it didn't seem like it was in the cards. This scholarship contest, hosted by @echoviewnc gives me a new chance. It'd be an honor to be considered for it. I know this probably rambles a lot (writing has never been my strongest suit), but I hope that doesn't detract from my sincerity. Thank you so much for reading. #echoviewloves --- Laslty, it's time to tag somebody else I think should enter. I felt a bit weird about this because I don't want to tag somebody I've never met (or haven't spoken to recently), but I don't know many weavers in the flesh. Several weeks back I went to a workshop with Whitney @wegather Crutchfield and it definitely helped to reignite my weaving spark. It would cool if she had a chance to try some new things, too.

My submission for @theweavingkind winter challenge. The theme was concept which I mulled over ad nauseum. Finally I started thinking about myths legends and folklore. I found many interesting myths associated with cultures around the world but one really resonated with me. The Japanese myth of Tsuru Onagaeshi tells of a childless couple who come across an orphan in the street one night. They adopt her and in return for their kindness the girl weaves beautiful tapestries for the couple to sell. Under the condition that they never see her weaving she makes them many riches. Until the curiosity of the couple is too much and they sneak in to watch their daughter weave. It is then they see she uses feathers from her own body to weave the beautiful cloth which leaves her bare and in a shocking state. As the girls identity is uncovered as a crane she leaves the couple forever. So I wove the best cartoon of an origami crane in the middle with feathers meant to represent what the girl shed for her parents.
