The ability of fans to shape and change the art they enjoy is nothing new. In 1893, the reaction to Arthur Conan Doyle killing off Sherlock Holmes was so intense that he eventually resurrected him ten years later. Historian Greg Jenner, the author of the forthcoming book Dead Famous (a study of the history of fame), has even tracked the characteristics of modern fandom back to the 1700s when rival supporters of English theatre actresses would compete for dominance like Team Aniston or Team Jolie.
And to the 1920s, where fan groups would write thousands of letters to movie studios demanding their favorite actor be given better roles. “It was the same thing,” he says, “as Sonic the Hedgehog having weird teeth and people going, ‘No, that’s not the game I played as a kid, you need to fix it or I am not giving you any money.’”
The last decade or so has witnessed huge changes in the awareness, perception, and tools of fandom. In terms of television and film, the enormous successes of Game of Thrones and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have introduced geek culture – and its brand of participatory fandom – to the mainstream. At the same time, the internet – and more specifically social media – has amplified fans’ voices, while also breaking down the boundaries between them and the artists they love/hate.
Yet the extent to which the internet has changed the very nature of fandom is debatable. According to leading media scholar Henry Jenkins, whose 1992 book Textual Poachers is considered the founding text of fan studies, it has merely “increased the scope and scale of the fan community, allowed for ongoing interactions amongst fans, and made the entertainment industry more aware of the kind of fan responses which have been occurring all along”.
Case in point: in 1968, Star Trek fans – a group who essentially invented the framework of modern fandom – orchestrated a huge and successful letter-writing campaign to save the show from cancellation. Then, in subsequent years, they also popularised fan fiction as we now know it, publishing stories for each other in zines, and pioneering the homoerotic literary sub-genre of slash fiction (the term ‘slash’ literally derives from the punctuation between Kirk / Spock).
Now fans weaponize hashtags and online petitions to revive shows like The Expanse and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, or to take showrunners to task with criticisms of their blind spots and choices. One notable example is the teen show The 100, which sparked ire in 2016 after killing off one of the show’s prominent gay characters; an act that was seen by many to perpetuate the ‘bury your gays’ trope that has been prevalent in TV and film. And as for fan fiction? There is, most famously, E L James’ Fifty Shades of Grey series, which was inspired by Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight and originally posted on a fan website. But, beyond that, there is also the platform Archive of Our Own, which in 2019 won a Hugo award for its archive of more than 4.7 million fan-written stories.
“Fans engaging actively with the materials of their culture has improved our world in countless ways,” says Jenkins. “Television, as it exists today, is largely a response to modes of engagement that fans have modeled over the past several decades – [a form] where more attention is paid to backstories and secondary characters, where there is a greater degree of serialization and the core mythology is sustained across multiple media platforms, and which builds in space for exploration and speculation. And now, which seeks to be more diverse and inclusive in whose stories get told… Many of today’s critical darlings are following practices that were modeled first in fan fiction.”
Perhaps one of the most profound changes of the last 10 years is the extent to which the entertainment industry has begun to exploit the passion of fanbases for their own commercial ends. “The industry needs fans more than ever before,” explains academic Suzanne Scott, author of Fake Geek Girls, a study of the gender politics of fandom. “They need fans to ensure big opening weekends at the box office, they need them as promotional labor to create more ‘authentic’ excitement around a media object, or to distinguish one text from the glut of content that we are constantly choosing between as consumers.” Just take the techniques employed by Netflix, who have become masters of facilitating ‘organic’ conversation around their output.
On the more extreme end of the spectrum, they even rely on them as investors. A famous example being the 2014 big-screen revival of cult TV detective drama Veronica Mars, a sequel made possible only by the crowdfunding efforts of fans, and which subsequently led to a 2019 TV return on streaming service Hulu.
With the latter series, this equal partnership dynamic started to become complicated, however, with fans recoiling in horror when creator Rob Thomas killed off love interest Logan.
To quote journalist Constance Grady, writing for Vox: “Thomas, they said, had taken advantage of their desire to see Veronica and Logan together, using their investment as shippers to leverage not just their time and attention, but the literal dollars out of their pockets. In that case, didn’t he owe them something?”
Jenkins thinks it’s a fair question. “The sense of ownership reflects the way humans have always engaged with stories,” he says. “We use stories to make sense of who we are. We use stories to debate our values, fears, and aspirations. We display our attachment to stories in various ways and we define ourselves through which stories mean the most to us. There’s nothing odd about this. What is odd is the idea that corporations want to claim a monopoly over the storytelling process, resist input from their audience, and lockdown stories from further circulation and elaboration.”

I didn't know I was blind in one of my eyes until I was 24 years old My first eye exam was courtesy of the New York City public school system. I was 9 years old.
That year a dentist and eye doctor visited the school to give exams to children whose parents couldn't afford such vital health services. Falling squarely into that less than fortunate category, I was able to get my eyes examined for the first  time.
The exam was rushed. I remember the eye doctor's crisp white coat and his gruff tone. I was asked to read a chart on a wall with my right eye.
I replied quietly that I couldn't read the letters.
The doctor appeared only slightly bothered, “Not even the top letter?”
I heard myself apologize automatically, “No, sorry sir.”
“Are you sure ?”, he asked sounding slightly perturbed.
I started to question reality, “yes?”
And that was the end of the exam.
I was diagnosed with a lazy eye and prescribed glasses with one comically thick pane of glass on the right side.
I wore glasses like that for years. I also had chronic headaches. At a subsequent visit with another eye doctor in my early teens, headache concerns and failure to read letters on the eye chart with my right eye were interpreted as a need for a stronger prescription.
When I was 18 years old, I moved out on my own and I stopped wearing glasses. I broke the one pair of glasses that I had and since I didn't have money for eye exams I concluded that it didn't matter anyway. My internal reasoning was that if I had a lazy eye, it wanted to be lazy. Why bother it further? Let it be lazy if it wants.
My headaches stopped.
Years passed.
When I was 24 years old, I finally got health insurance from one of my jobs. Feeling residual guilt over not wearing glasses for years, I booked an appointment with an ophthalmologist. The exam involved a lot of questions, lights, and intricate machinery.
At the end of the exam the doctor said: “I am about to ask you a strange question. What ear do you use when you use the phone?”
I answered without hesitation: “Oh! My left ear. That's my good ear.”
She then asked what no other eye doctor had ever asked me.
She asked me what I saw out of my right eye.
I felt seen for the first time.
I had never articulated a response to the question that she asked and I replied: “ I see scattered light only the light looks like it's being seen through broken glass like light through a crushed kaleidoscope.”
Hearing myself say those words out loud was revelatory.
The doctor told me that she suspected I had cortical blindness with blindsight (more on this below) and scheduled an MRI.
After a pretty intense brain MRI, I was diagnosed with cortical blindness in my right eye.
Here are a list of random facts that apply to my subjective experience with cortical blindness and blindsight:
1. I have had it since birth.
It could be genetic or it could have been due to my mother's health when she was younger. My mother experienced extreme trauma and malnutrition as a child when she was in concentration camps for four years (this is way too long to go into here, maybe one day I will write about that story). It's been shown that malnutrition and trauma can lead to future issues with reproduction.
However, no one knows for sure what caused my cortical blindness and it will always be a mystery. I am ok with that.
2. I see the world with my left eye.
I use my left eye when I use a camera. It's what I look out of when I make art, look at people, work, and do 99% of the things I do.
I don't think about my right eye at all usually. Some situations that have forced me to think consciously about my right eye: -When I was in pre-med, microbiology lab was a big issue for me due to the binocular microscopes.
-Escalators used to make me extremely anxious since my depth of field is limited.
- 3D films give me headaches and make me nauseous because my brain tries to process the visual output with both eyes.
-I absolutely love road trips but cannot drive because of my cortical blindness.
3. I have Type 1 blindsight.
Blindsight is a peculiar thing to attempt to explain. In fact, I have never even tried to write about it before so bear with me if this doesn't make a lot of sense.
Here is the explanation of blindsight on Wikipedia : “Blindsight is the ability of people who are cortically blind due to lesions in their striate cortex, also known as primary visual cortex or V1, to respond to visual stimuli that they do not consciously see.
The majority of studies on blindsight are conducted on patients who have the conscious blindness on only one side of their visual field. Following the destruction of the striate cortex, patients are asked to detect, localize, and discriminate amongst visual stimuli that are presented to their blind side, often in a forced-response or guessing situation, even though they do not consciously recognize the visual stimulus.
Research shows that blind patients achieve a higher accuracy than would be expected from chance alone.Type 1 blindsight is the term given to this ability to guess—at levels significantly above chance—aspects of a visual stimulus (such as location or type of movement) without any conscious awareness of any stimuli.
Blindsight challenges the common belief that perceptions must enter consciousness to affect our behavior; showing that our behavior can be guided by sensory information of which we have no conscious awareness ''
I seem to be able to sense people by their movements even without seeing them. I can sense when routine patterns are off by even a tiny amount. This feeling is amplified on my right side. I used to say I felt like I had a version of spidey-sense. When I was officially diagnosed with blindsight, my spidey-sense made totally sense.
If I am close with or around people for a while, I don't even need to look at them with my eyes to see them because I know with pretty good accuracy what is happening around me even if (or especially if) it is happening in my right eye field of 'vision'.
If I am really into / crushing on someone and around them for any length of time my blindsight is even more intense when it comes to sensing their presence and movements. Blindsight can't be switched on or off. The intensity seems to differ depending on circumstance, surroundings, and even connection to people. It isn't ideal all the time since it just makes me feel hyper-aware of people and myself which then makes me retreat super awkwardly since I also have social anxiety. Fun :/
3. I call my right eye vision: colored glass world.
I don't always see or visit colored glass world. In fact, most of the time, there is no conscious awareness of colored glass world.
This is the closest image I could find to show what it kind of looks like (however, I can see shapes and light):
Tumblr media
Unlike blindsight, I can absolutely go into colored glass world at will or I slip into colored glass world when these circumstances occur:
-When I am really tired or when I daydream I tend to slip into right eye vision because it feels soothing to escape into colored glass world.
-When I am super happy.
-When I play piano I get into a flow state and colored glass world meshes well with this state. I have played classical piano since I was 3 years old and used to specifically memorize long pieces of music just to play the music while in colored glass world.
4. That ear question the ophthalmologist asked me wasn't totally out of left field.
It's not so odd to have a dominant side when it comes to sight and hearing when cortical blindness occurs in one eye. I can hear out of my right ear but it's just slightly different in a way that I can't quite explain. my left ear. I am hyper-sensitive to sound.
I also tilt my head to the right when speaking with people as if I am presenting my good eye and ear. Once people know this about me, they can't unsee it.
5.The irony of the fact that I ended up in careers that rely entirely on my vision is not lost on me.
I am currently a photo director and producer at Vox Media for Curbed. I am also a photographer who does commissioned art for games, film, books, and other media and have had two photography books published.
My second book, NY in the Snow, was the culmination of seven years of going out into every major snowstorm in New York City to translate into art all the feelings of isolation, nostalgia, and loneliness I felt while surrounded by the vast snow-filled cityscapes.
I never wrote about my vision in the book. In fact, it only occurred to me when the book released in stores and I was actively promoting it, that my snow photography was the closest way I ever came to showing everyone else how my right eye vision meshes with my left eye vision.
Tumblr media
I spent hours waiting for the right combination of people and cars to enter the stormy backdrops.
Did I ever slip into colored glass world while shooting and editing the images during that time period?
All the time.
Tumblr media
6. I finally got glasses this weekend.
After I was diagnosed with cortical blindness, I was told that all the years of headaches were due to constantly putting a thick prescription in front of my right eye. It was forcing my brain to try to adjust to the prescription. and just led to misery.
However, years later, my left eye definitely has deteriorated a tiny bit.
Having insurance again meant a visit to a new eye doctor and glasses with a prescription only in the left lens to eliminate any headache issues.
Here are my new glasses yesterday (this image was taken for Instagram stories which flips images, this is clearly flipped).
Tumblr media
It's nice to have glasses with no prescription in my right eye.
My right eye is just fine as is.

Distribution channel (part 3): How to measure distribution channel efficiency?
A good distribution channel must be shown in specific numbers, a true channel manager must understand each distribution channel effectiveness measurement index.. You must understand numbers to increase numbers. Through the first two parts of the Distribution Channel series, we've talked a lot about how to set up distribution channels and manage channel conflicts, however, it would be a huge omission if (after all) we I don't know how well the current distribution channel works. Therefore, a tool to help analyze, measure and support decision making is very important. You are not allowed to make yourself a blind fortune teller in the market, or judge and make decisions based on experience, it just shows that you are a more experienced fortune teller than other charlatans. Channel efficiency, we say here, is numbers; Here, we work with a data-driven mindset – otherwise, you will kill your business just for… the experience.
How to measure distribution channel effectiveness?
You would think that sales are the primary concern for businesses. That's right, I probably don't need to explain too much about the meaning and importance of revenue. Sales is the lifeline, the source of life, affects the net income and determines the success or failure of the business.
But ask the question: How do you make sales if the product isn't on the shelf? Whether you're banging the drums for jubilant marketing, discounts /discounts, or crazy giveaways, what if the shopper can't find your merchandise? Have your previous marketing and sales efforts gone in vain? That's why distribution is the next thing you'll need to consider when measuring channel performance.
For a brand that exists thanks to the distribution system, the distribution channel metrics - especially the distribution index group - will show the brand's ability to successfully reach the target market. . How to balance the efforts of “push” (building and developing point of sale as well as distribution system) and “pull” (creating demand for consumers) is always the top concern of managers. channel value.
Of which, expanding distribution is always the top task when setting growth goals, unless you just want to survive as a small business (this is completely normal). However, to scale-up, you must expand. However, it must be admitted that the distribution story is extremely complicated and difficult to duplicate. Every step needs to be cautious, any trade investment needs to be carefully considered. And the basis for you to take-action is through the distribution channel efficiency measurement indicators.
In order to continue this article, I want to make sure that we agree on the concepts and terminology of distribution. For some people, theory is an old-fashioned game in the classrooms of faculty and students. However, it is a fact that the more specialized people are, the more they understand these academic concepts. Not to brag, but to grasp the concept to fully understand all aspects of the profession, and especially to avoid misunderstanding or misrepresentation during work.
Back to the basics of distribution
According to Philip Kotler, “distribution includes the various activities of the business so that the product is easily accessible and available to the target customers”. In other words, distribution has the function of getting the product into the hands of the consumer. Distribution channel refers to the intermediaries involved in the process of bringing the product from the place of production to the point of consumption.
I quote Philip Kotler's interpretation above to know that I still have great respect for him. However, to apply it in practice, we need to explain the concept of distribution in another way:
Distribution is the estimated number or percentage of stores that sell a particular product in a geographic area. Or, distribution is a measure that shows how distributed a product is.
However, the story does not stop there, just like a canal with many branches but can't see the current, how can the whole field be irrigated? Like products lying on dozens of shelves, unable to circulate until the expiration date, they have to be thrown away. So purchasing power will be the third measure of the effectiveness of the distribution channel, the final piece of your whole distribution picture.
So what is purchasing power (velocity)?
Velocity is a measure of how well a product, brand, or category is selling when it is offered in-store to consumers.
Purchasing power data is typically collected as part of a retail audit of point-of-sale shoppers. It is recorded every time a transaction is completed at that store. So why is velocity important?
Purchasing power gives us a complete view of a brand's business distribution – by product type, region and market.
Determine which products need to be prioritized for distribution development.
Velocity data is important to inform distribution expansion plans, even for products with low market share.
Identify potential competitors with strong growth that you have not discovered due to low market share.
To summarize, there are three types of distribution channel effectiveness metrics that you must track: #1 is sales because it's vital; #2 distribution because you can't have revenue without distribution; The third important thing is purchasing power (velocity) because it shows us many other problems in the product flow story. After generalizing the distribution channel efficiency metrics, the next thing to pay attention to is…
Do you have the right data?
Most FMCG companies distribute products through intermediaries in order to achieve the desired coverage and market share , but life is not like a dream, brands are not always able to get the data. details about the distribution of their SKUs at the point of sale, or if any, very general. Sometimes, brands have to choose a solution to buy detailed reports from MT channels (forget about GT or On-Trade channels), or go to market research companies like Nielsen, Kantar with expensive costs. Red. And when you decide to spend money to buy report data from a research company, avoid these 3 mistakes:
Missing data for some items because of no category definition : You need to make sure your CAT definition matches the Nielsen/Kantar definition. I recommend providing the agency with a UPC list of your brands and your competitors. Sometimes you will need to buy 3 to 4 industry reports to build the perfect dataset.
No previous year absolutes required : Of course, you don't just want to see current sales for each item, but you also have to know the year-over-year percentage change to gauge growth. But what if there are items that have been discontinued since last year? You will get a -100% value cell which is meaningless, so you should only pay when you have received the absolute value column (Abs Change) of the previous year's data.
No product attributes : By default, Nielsen will split data by brand, category or even sub-category for you. However, sometimes you will need more than that to clearly define each segment, product group. Assuming you have a cosmetics business, attributes like organic claim, natural, vegan, chemical-free, cruelty-free, etc. are very important. Without a clear delineation from the beginning, you may end up making false judgments about an industry. Therefore, ask the research company to report in detail on related attributes such as segment, positioning, packaging, product specifications, etc. to not have to "lose money".
Meaning and method of calculating distribution channel effectiveness indicators
With the concept that "a pebble in the hand of a genius is better than a sharp knife in the hand of a useless person", it would be a waste if someone possessed full analytical data but did not understand any description of those parameters at all. . As a channel manager with a sharp mind, you need to have a deep understanding of distribution channel effectiveness metrics in order to leverage and bring your products to the top on every shelf.
As mentioned, channel managers need to pay attention to three groups of indicators to measure distribution channel effectiveness: #1 sales (sales), #2 distribution (distribution), and #3 purchasing power (velocity). ). The relationship between them is determined by a simple mathematical formula:
I will illustrate what it means with the simplest example. Suppose there are two brands A and B selling 3000 products together, but the sales dynamics of the two are not the same. Brand A distributes little but has high purchasing power. Brand B distributes very well but the sales speed is quite slow.
This difference will affect how you approach the decision to increase sales. Distribution issues are almost entirely under the retailer's control. So for brand A, you will have to find a way to urge the retailer to increase the listing of the product at the new point of sale to increase sales. Purchasing power reflects many issues, many of which are within the control of the manufacturer. So for brand B, you need to learn and evaluate factors affecting product output, such as price, promotion, consumer tastes, competitiveness, etc. marketing solutions based on those findings.
Note that, the above example is only intended to help you visualize the correlation of the three groups of distribution channel effectiveness metrics mentioned above, but I do not encourage you to use that metric for analysis in the world. real. Now the real algebra class begins. We open the article with the "lifeblood" of the business.
Group of indicators to measure the effectiveness of distribution channels #1: Sales
From the moment the product leaves the production site to reach the final consumer, you already know there are many intermediaries in between. It brings many advantages, but also many difficulties. Therefore, tracking sales through each stage of distribution will be extremely important.
Usually, the structure of a simple distribution channel will include three stages that the product will go through: From manufacturer to distributor/wholesaler, from distributor/wholesaler to retailer , from the retailer to the end consumer. As a key group of distribution channel performance metrics, sales need to be tracked through all three of the above stages.
Sales-in
Sell-in is the sales into the distribution system (from the manufacturer to the distributor/wholesaler), which can be collected through the manufacturer's own sales data.
Sales-through
Sell-through is sales through distribution units (from distributors/wholesalers to retailers), which can be obtained through channel members' sales data, relationships, terms and conditions. commercial account, etc.
Sell-out sales
Sell-out is the sales from the distribution system to the consumer, which can be obtained through retailer sales figures, market research, terms of trade, etc.
However, the most important indicator in the group of indicators measuring distribution channel effectiveness related to sales is not the above three types, but the sell-through rate or the ratio of sales through distribution units. . Why?
Sell-through rate
Sell-through rate (the ratio of sales through distribution units) is a measure of the speed of distribution of a product through each distribution stage. This is the best indicator to know if sales through channels are effective or not. STR is tracked each month, the formula for calculation is usually in the form of:
BOM stands for beginning of the month, ie the beginning of the month. For an easy example, suppose at the beginning of the month brand A sells 100 products to a distributor. At the end of the month, the distributor sells 30 products to the agents, the distributor's sell-through rate is: 30/100 = 30%.
Group of indicators to measure the effectiveness of distribution channels #2: Distribution (distribution)
Shopper cannot make a purchase if the product is not on the shelf. Remember that. So distribution is an especially important parameter in the distribution channel performance metrics that you need to track, second only to sales. We will start with the simplest as well as the most basic metric.
Numeric distribution/PSS (Percentage of Stores Selling)
It can be said that listing products to new points of sale to increase sales opportunities is always the first tactic that channel managers think of in their distribution strategy.
Numeric distribution or PSS (Percentage of Stores Selling) or commonly known as coverage is the percentage of stores where a product is present in a geographic area . It is determined by the formula:
For example: Product A is present at 50 points of sale out of 100 points of sale in area X, it can be said that product A covers 50% of selling points in area X.
Coverage is a fairly simple indicator of distribution channel effectiveness, but the market is not that simple. Imagine your product is available at many points of sale, but most of them are retail stores. As a result, despite the high coverage, sales were low. Therefore, you need to penetrate into larger points of sale to increase shopper access, increase sales opportunities as well as sales. That is why we need an indicator like ACV when the “size” of the sell point is equally important.
ACV (All Commodity Volume)
ACV (All Commodity Volume) or merchandise volume is the total sales of a point of sale during a given time period.
For example, Store 1 has a turnover of $30M, in other words ACV Store 1 = $30M. It is easy to understand! ACV is a popular metric to measure the size of a retail store. Instead of determining the size of the point of sale through a physical measure like store size, we use sales. That way you will know how the business of that store is.
If you want to expand your distribution, ACV will help you prioritize opportunities. In general, the larger the point-of-sale revenue, the higher the sales potential for the product. However, here, the distribution channel efficiency measurement that we are really interested in is not ACV, but %ACV and %ACVD.
%ACV (Percentage ACV)
It is quite interesting that the distribution also follows Pareto's law, which means that 20% of the points of sale bring about 80% of the sales. That's why people care about Key Account - the goose that lays the golden eggs of the business. So we need % ACV (retail sales share) .
Let's say you know all the sales of every point of sale in your area (ACV), this way you will know which are the selling points that have the most potential to bring in the highest revenue for your product. The %ACV metric, now, will tell you which retail systems are more and less important in growing sales.
From the above table, % ACV tells you that Retailer C needs the most attention because it accounts for 50% of sales (although there are only 2 stores); while Retailer D has the most stores but the lowest proportion of sales. It also shows that even if your product is distributed to 7 stores (coverage reaches 70%) through Retailer B & D, the shopper's reach or revenue market share is not equal to that of competitors that only distribute 2 stores. products (20% coverage) through Retailer C, but the revenue market share accounts for 50%. So coverage isn't everything, if your point of sale has no sales.
%ACVD (%ACV Distribution)
%ACVD is similar to %ACV. While %ACV calculates the percentage of sales of the point of sale, %ACVD calculates the percentage of sales of the brand. I usually distinguish them by calling them %ACV (point of sale) and %ACV (brand) to avoid confusion.
Conceptually, %ACV Distribution or %ACVD is a measure of product availability at the point of sale based on revenue. It is determined by the store sales that sell products compared to the total revenue of the entire retail chain, or the entire store in a geographical area .
PCV ( Product Class Value)
No matter how big the selling point is, it's useless to have low sales in the industry. If you trade in cosmetics, whether to distribute it to the Bach Hoa Xanh chain (with nearly 2,000 points of sale and a very high ACV) or a specialized cosmetic store chain like Guardian (only around 80 stores and a lower ACV). ) would be more efficient? I don't know. The only way is to rely on the PCV index.
PCV (Product Class Value) or category volume is the total sales of a point of sale in a given period of time.
For example: The mother and baby category at Store 1 has a turnover of $10M, or PCV Store 1-mom&baby = $10M. It can be said that what is more remarkable than the size of the point of sale is the size of the category. PCV is a way to help you determine if that point of sale is suitable for the industry you are in. No one is foolish enough to head into a giant retail chain while the revenue of the aviation industry is nowhere to be seen, such as selling car accessories in the Co.opMart system.
%PCV (Percentage PCV)
Just as ACV has % ACV, PCV will also have % PCV to determine the proportion of category revenue . It is calculated using the formula:
Just kidding: in channel performance metrics, all are significant, but some are more significant than others. Here are PCV and ACV.
Back to the story of a cosmetics saleswoman trying to jump into Bach Hoa Xanh or a guy selling car accessories breaking into Co.opMart. By common sense, we also know that doing so is tantamount to suicide. However, that's because those two categories are so specialized. Reversing the story, if you deal in FMCG goods like toothpaste, confectionery, milk, soft drinks, etc., the problem will be different. Because the line is too blurred. You cannot use personal experience to judge subjectively, that's why %PCV will be an effective tool to tell you how to invest properly.
Looks familiar? The above table is taken from the %ACV example, but PCV and %PCV are added. You will immediately feel the difference. As analyzed earlier, Retailer C is said to be the most important because % ACV is the highest even though the coverage is only 20%. However, the industry revenue % PCV is the lowest, only 10%. Meanwhile, Retailer D which was previously considered the least important has the highest PCV %, which means the sales potential for your category when the product enters Retailer D is the highest.
CPR (Category Performance Ratio)
To have a better overview to compare the business performance of each retail chain, we can use the CPR index.
CPR (Category Performance Ratio) or category performance ratio is an indicator that compares the performance of a particular product line at a point of sale against the general market .
The purpose of CPR is to identify potential selling points for a brand's line of products, or to help planners allocate appropriate investments for trading activities. If your store has a CPR greater than 1, congratulations, you've found the perfect selling point for your category.
AIC (Average Items Carried)
Four types of coverage metrics, ACV (as well as %ACV), PCV (as well as %PCV), CPR give you a view of the width of your product attribution. However, in order to have an overview and multi-dimensional view of the market, we need to measure the depth of the entire distribution picture. And AIC is the indicator that we will need to find out.
A brand can have many different SKUs, however, for a variety of reasons, not all SKUs are listed on the point of sale. Therefore AIC (Average Items Carried) helps us to know the average number of items present at the point of sale of the brand .
Suppose we have 4 brands that are all widely distributed , reaching the same absolute percentage of ACVD, or in other words, have been distributed to all points of sale in the region. However, Brand D is a brand with a deeper penetration level than other competitors, because on average Brand D has up to 50 products at each point of sale; Meanwhile, Brand A can only list 10 products per store, the lowest of all. So to be able to expand distribution when coverage has reached the maximum threshold, you can choose to develop product lines, increase the number of SKUs at the point of sale to increase AIC.
TDP (Total Distribution Points)
We say “save the best for last”. The final boss is always the best. TDP is the ancestor of distribution channel effectiveness metrics in distribution groups. In fact, we don't need to be too concerned about AIC, the reason why I included AIC is to serve as the background for the final boss TDP. So what is it that is so terrible?
Actually, TDP (Total Distribution Points) or total distribution score is determined by the total % ACVD of all SKUs of a brand, segment, category, or whatever else you want to measure.
Simply put, TDP is a common measure for the entire group of distribution metrics, it shows the popularity as well as the amount of product present at the point of sale (width and depth of distribution). Determination formula:
Suppose a brand has four product categories marked SKUs from 1 to 4. Because not every point of sale has a complete list of SKUs, each SKU will have a different ACVD %. If we add all the ACVD % of each SKU together, we get the total TDP distribution score.
Alternately, if your Retail Audit data is not detailed enough for each SKU, you can use the %AVCD method of the brand with the average number of items at each point of sale (AIC) for that brand.
In addition, it also says something from Brand A, that for every 4 different SKUs of Brand A, there will be an average of 2.83 SKUs present at the point of sale. Thus, if Brand A wants to increase product allocation, they must find a way to increase the average number of SKU lists at the point of sale, in other words, increase the AIC.
Group of indicators to measure the effectiveness of distribution channels #3: Purchasing power (velocity)
We have studied through two groups of indicators to measure the effectiveness of distribution channels: sales and distribution. Finally, the third most important group of distribution channel efficiency metrics is the purchasing power (velocity). As explained, velocity and distribution are the two components that make up sales. Therefore, roughly understanding how to calculate velocity will include:
Therefore, each velocity measure will contain the sales in the numerator and the distribution in the denominator. The calculation you choose will depend on whether you are comparing one or more markets/points of sale. There are two types of velocity indicators we need to pay attention to:
1. Sales per Point of Distribution (SPPD) 2. Sales per Million (SPM)
Typically, businesses use a fairly simple velocity metric called Sales per Store. I also used it while explaining the concept above. However, I never recommend using this tool as an indicator of distribution channel effectiveness when applied in practice, because it does not take into account the difference in store size, easily creating a bias. bias for managers when making decisions.
SPPD (Sales per Point of Distribution)
SPPD (Sales per Point of Distribution) or revenue per unit of coverage, sometimes called consumer support, is the simplest and most intuitive purchasing power metric for analyzing sales within the same retail location. or market.
SPPD is an improvement over Sales per Store by considering store size using the %ACVD measure in the denominator. SPPD also shows the purchasing power or the user's preference and support for a brand.
SPPDs often appear in reports that rate items at an individual market or point of sale, as shown in the following example:
By dividing revenue into distribution (% ACVD) and purchasing power (SPPD), we can classify the above five products into two groups:
Product group with good distribution but poor purchasing power: Product 1, 2, 4.
Group of products with poor distribution but good purchasing power: Product 3, 5.
However, the SPPD measure only makes sense if the comparison takes place in the same market/region in your analysis. You cannot use SPPD to compare multiple points of sale or different markets/regions. Why? That's because they don't have the same frame of reference. Revenue in large markets is always higher than in small markets (obvious fact). For example, 75% ACVD in Saigon will bring in much larger revenue than 75% ACVD in Can Tho. When you weigh in between two different markets, not only is the ACVD % different, but even the ACV is significantly different. So you need a metric that accurately reflects the actual ACV (and not just %ACVD), and that's nothing but SPM.
SPM (Sales per Million)
When comparing multiple markets/points of sale, the SPPD is no longer a useful metric. Instead, the best channel performance metric to determine purchasing power in this case is SPM.
SPM (Sales per Million) or sales per million ACV is a measure of purchasing power to analyze sales across different markets, channels or points of sale. SPM not only takes into account %ACVD but also includes actual ACV in the calculation method.
There is a simpler way to interpret this SPM: for every 1,000,000 VND of market revenue sold, my product will account for X VND.
The reason we divide by the number of VND 1,000,000 is to facilitate data manipulation, because the market revenue is very large. For huge consumer goods industries like FMCG, we can even divide by 1 billion. In addition, it is possible to flexibly use sales instead of revenue, so SPM will now have the unit of product volume (volume).
To illustrate the SPM, I will use the previous example of SPPD but divide the report into two areas Saigon and Can Tho. What do you see? Is it true that although the % ACVD is higher in Can Tho, the SPPD is much lower than in Saigon? If you look at it and conclude that the demand for products of Can Tho people is not equal to Saigon, it is indeed wrong. Therefore, in order to know whether the demand of Can Tho people is lower, or simply because the market size of Can Tho is smaller than Saigon, we must need the SPM index as below:
Have you noticed the “different foam” yet? The SPM index in Can Tho is higher than Saigon (except for Product 3), if you mistakenly think that the demand for products of Can Tho people is lower than Saigon, you can now withdraw it.
In summary, for the distribution channel effectiveness metrics in the purchasing power group, the following should be kept in mind:
The first step to understanding sales revenue is to separate distribution and purchasing power.
Thereby, purchasing power is determined by the quotient between sales and distribution.
When analyzing sales in the same retail system or market area, you can use either SPPD or SPM.
However, when comparing sales to point of sale, or region to region, you must use SPM. Absolutely do not use SPPD.

After ten months of NSTP, it is now time to say goodbye. Utilitatem was a joy to run and manage as it enabled me and my groupmates to vent out our honest opinions on what was happening in our subject and in our activities. Kapoy siya, pero worth it sad kaayo. Nakita gyud nako bilang leader na naningkamot akong mga kagrupo sa pagbuhat sa mga tasks, and I could not have been any more prouder. I feel like we have worked on this project to the best of our abilities, and I am willing to do it all over again. Here are my groupmates say on this last blog post.
Alex: My NSTP experience was refreshing. Amid all the other courses that we had to take, NSTP was like a breath of fresh air — it was entirely different from all the other subjects. In NSTP, I was able to learn a lot of lessons that I knew I’d be able to immediately apply in real life. I was able to learn the importance of service and being a person for others. The activities were enjoyable, our NSTP instructor was memorable, and my classmates were always great to work with. All of these factors have shaped the perspective I have of NSTP: that it is a course which I will always hold in my heart. I think that I would’ve been able to learn a lot more if the course were done in a face to face setting. However, given the circumstances, I can still definitely say that going through NSTP was one of the highlights of my first year in college, and I know that I’d be looking back on it in the following years to come.
Harly: My NSTP experience was an eyeopener to various social problems. The last project inspired me to do well in my studies to become an OBGYN upon learning that there are many cases of teenage pregnancy in Brgy. Langub. I believe that that evidence-based sex education programs were effective in promoting sexual health among teenagers. If I become an OBGYN, I will conduct a lot of seminars about sex education to parents and teenagers.
Hannah: NSTP is one of those subjects which will give you a boring impression, a not so interesting course. Yet, as the class started my first impression was so wrong. the class was not boring and it was so interesting. It teaches us to be a better person. It helps us to be aware. It molds us socially, mentaly and personally.  Being a person for others and to honor thy country is one of the most worthy values I have gained. It equips us with everything we need to learn from day to day living, hazards, environmental aspects and most especially our nation. For me my NSTP experience was such an incredible experience. Because it helps me to build friendships and helps me also to be a better student. Our professor was such an amazing teacher also. Every time he begins his class, he always brings amazing games and activities in order to uplift the spirit of the class and becomes jolly. We’ve learned a lot of knowledge from him. NSTP makes us experience everything during our virtual training. Harnessing and developing  new skills is fun. Lastly, NSTP brings the most unforgettable leadership training.
Tranque: My NSTP experience was a rollercoaster ride throughout the whole year. At first, I was so uncertain of the content and outcomes of this course since it was my first year in college. But as soon as the months progressed, I was now a bit more comfortable and was able tor relate it to our previous extra subject in AdDU SHS called Leadership Development Program or LDP. On the first semester. I was struggling in terms of interacting with the my groupmates since I am really an introverted person. Regardless of that, I can say that I was still cooperative and submitting the tasks that are given to me on a specific session. During the second semester, everything was now on my track since I was a bit more comfortable in the course, my classmates, my teacher, and especially my groupmates. Everyone was now a familiar face and I was able to interact with my group comfortably. The only problem I had was internet stability, since I was in my hometown in the province that time and we really had bad internet connection. There were times that I could not attend synchronous meetings because of the unstable internet. However, I still managed to comply all the necessary tasks that were given to me. I still managed to cooperate very well on the class project despite being situated far from the city or the target community. I really thank God for these experiences and I am hoping that I would be able to apply everything that I have learned in this course not just in human welfare, world peace, nature, etc., but for the good of all things.
EG: NSTP has been one of those subjects that felt light on the heart throughout. It’s not about understanding life in a biological sense, making sense of chemical compositions, or lessons that deal with complex concepts. It is a simple subject that teaches us the value of service, and despite everything, it has made me learn vital lessons about who I am as a person. From the classroom setting (online, of course) where general concepts are taught about service aligning towards the nation’s betterment while also encapsulating Atenean values to the actual implementation of a community project, there were lessons to be learned. Of course, not everything has been perfect, and I find some flaws here and there, but even those have lessons that can be extracted from. It was not an ideal experience, but it was a learning experience, especially in these trying times.
Danika: My NSTP experience opened my eyes to lots of new things. First, I felt like it was such an opportunity to be part of an activity that was a concrete act of helping out other people. Throughout my past community engagement experiences, I never got to directly communicate with the people we are doing the project for. However, in this course, it was quite exciting to actually be involved in the organizing process because I get to pay an upgraded contribution to the cause. Second, my socializing skills and ability to work with other people improved greatly especially with this online setting. Not that I prefer it over face to face communication, but this setup gave us all a challenge that helped us to become better in communicating with others and working together instead of giving up or srick to a mediocre output. Lastly, NSTP allowed me to discover within myself that it is not difficult to offer a helping hand even when we are given such limits or boundaries. I learned that there will always be a way if the cause is for the common good.
Mao na to ang last anecdotes sa akong mga kagrupo, and for now, it is sad to say that Utilitatem is going offline. Thank you for the journey and we hope to see you again in the future. Utilitatem, signing off.

As an independent property contractor, you normally must cover your own marketing expenditures. Moreover, most federal publications published online will charge a hefty fee just to have the ability to include your business on real estates in their webpages. However, in the event that you really sift through the internet, you can realize that there are still online books which is only going to charge you with a small amount for publishing your property business in their webpages. What is nice about these online books is they convince a great deal of people to buy what you're selling due to the flashy hype which they use in their web pages. In order to further enhance your odds of selling, you will need to understand the three important factors behind the predator marketing system: traffic generation, lead generation, and an automated closing sales process.
Promoting Your Business via Affiliate Marketing
You can really compare online business forums into a Chamber of Commerce. Of course, you've heard what a Chamber of Commerce does in a community. The Chamber of Commerce is a place where all businessmen in the area visit so as to ask for some type of assistance. And the help that the Chamber of Commerce provides can vary from marketing ideas down to technical issues because of business and networking-related concerns. In actuality, online marketing can be a excellent chance for businessmen of all sizes and shapes. If there's something which will prompt visitors to come to your website, this is it.
In fact, there's still a great deal of room on top for a true professional and a excellent marketing adviser to occupy. Considering all the wannabes proliferating from the world of online businesses, the actual professionals can cope with them just like a piece of cake. All these tricky tactics these wannabes employ are nothing compared to the strategies that marketing professionals can perform. You want to have a business plan which has a marketing department. In it, you might have a guide for your online marketing strategies and marketing activities. Since the distributor nowadays has less work since he doesn't need to devote plenty of his time towards one sale, the cash that a company allots for its vendors can now change from sales commissions to downlink commissions.
If you would like an online marketplace that honors 1031 tax deferred exchanges, you should market in an online book made specifically for the housing market in addition to for 1021 tax deferred exchanges. An internet marketing company won't just assist you in your search engine optimization and graphic design work, but also in lots of additional business-related services. As a result of this, you could possibly make money in a normal manner. Online marketing is as straightforward as presenting your services and products in an appealing and persuasive way.
Strategies in Online Marketing
What else will you need when you understand how to do online marketing? I know people who've well-off businesses in real life, but they've spent so much to keep their business growing. On the other hand, I know of online businessmen who easy work at home without being so stressed out with money matters. This is because they use multilevel marketing tactics, allowing them to earn as large as six times their capital. Essentially, the internet is a terrific place to generate money, in addition to keep tabs on a communication with a client and imagine what is going to happen over time.
What Is Creative Thinking in Your Real Estate Business All About?
Look around you. What do you see? Steel, timber, plastics, paint, paper?
Look around again - from another vantage point. What do you find this time? Machines, buildings, tools, books, pictures?
After more - look - from another point. What do you see? Ideas?
Ideas that changed old, familiar things into new things - new items of usefulness, security, beauty? Ideas that generated greater efficiency, enjoyment, security, relaxation, spirituality, leisure, health?
The day that you've fixed the normal habit of looking at things in this fashion is going to be the day that you've really begun to be an extremely creative person. In fact, this Third Appearance is quite nearly a definition of creative thinking.
Creative Thinking is the evolution of new ideas which will satisfy some expressed or implied requirement of mankind.
That is what this is all about.
"Who - Me?"
"Well, that leaves me out. WhyI could never write a Crime and Punishment, or create a polio vaccine, or write a Fifth Symphony, or even invent a rocket engine, or conceive a Theory of
Is this what you've just said, or are saying, to your self? In that case, all right; so be it.
You may be another Tolstoy, or Salk, or Beethoven, or Einstein, or who-have-you. And quite possibly you might never create a planet-rocking invention, however much you might want to do so. (How will you ever find out whether you can or can't, incidentally?)
But hold on a minute! You might be jumping to a misconception, and missing the point about creative thinking entirely.
There's nothing whatever in the definition of creative thinking which either explicitly or implicitly connotes a globe-rattling idea is 1 whit more creative than one using a comparatively tiny sphere of effect. Size has nothing to do with it, actually. An idea for a new pin is at least as imaginative as an idea for a cyclotron!
Further - as though you had not already noticed - there's considerable evidence that the planet does not even need a continuous stream, mass or series of great, radical, high-powered, glorious, overwhelming, earth-shattering thoughts.
To the contrary, it appears apparent that our insatiable global appetite for new ideas is on a somewhat more mundane level: leaky faucets, job output, the children's lessons, pay increases, letters, tools, recreation, cooking, classified advertisements, highway markers, marketing property...
These and hundreds of thousands of other kindred elements of our workaday life are no less demanding of the interest of creative minds. - for this, too, is the"proper" kingdom of creative thinking; and even the very modest contribution made on this plane may also move the world measurably and desirably forward.
Creative Thinking is the evolution of new ideas - of whatever size, on each plane, in any area of human interest and endeavor - that will satisfy some expressed or implied requirement or needs of humankind. So...
"Who, me," you say? Certainly, you! You, of all people.
And that is what this is all about.

An Athlete's Guide To Chronic Knee Pain
 Buy Now
Got patellar tendonitis? Jumper’s knee (patellar tendonosis)? How about patellar mistracking? Chondromalacia? Or maybe your knees are always in pain, for reasons you don’t quite know yet?
I’m going to tell you two things. If you’re an athlete with chronic knee pain, you NEED to know these two things.
First, let’s start with a story.
You have a friend named Kong. Kong likes touching hot things. Don’t ask why. That’s just Kong. He’s a weird guy.
You’re a good friend. You don’t want Kong to burn himself, so you scour his house, getting rid of everything that can potentially burn him. Kong lives happily ever after, right?
Eh…
Not really. Because Kong is limited to a “fake” world. If he ever returns to the real world, he’s gonna’ get burned. It’s possible to live pain free in a fake world without really being healed.
AVOIDING THE PROBLEM ≠ FIXING THE PROBLEM
The root of Kong’s problem is his wacky tendency to touch hot things, not necessarily the pain he experiences as a result of his strange behavior.
Pain is just one piece to a much larger puzzle.
What this means to you.
So here you are. You can’t run. You can’t jump. You can’t squat. Even standing up from the toilet makes you wince. Your knees are in shambles.
And there you are. In bed. Waiting for a miracle. Waiting for the physiology gnomes to tap your knee with a magical star wand.
Because, well, that’s everyone recommends. Rest. Rest. Rest some more. Rest. Rest. Rest. Rest. Rest.
But “rest” is the cheap answer.
You can avoid the sports and activities you love and feel OK, but when you go back to them…? You get burned.
Kong’s paradox.
Most rehab theories are based on an arbitrary concept of being damaged one day, resting for a little bit, then being magically healed overnight.
This is true and false at the same time. Your body is amazing. It can heal itself. But as long as you still have the behaviors that forced the damage, you’re going to continually breakdown.
This is Kong’s paradox.
You can eliminate the pain (feel healthy) without fixing the root of pain.
And if you continually ignore the root of the pain? Your short-term inflammation (knee pain, tendonitis) turns into long-term tissue degeneration (jumper’s knee, tendonosis).
Pain isn’t hardcore or manly. It’s not natural. Pain is a sign that something is wrong.
The first thing you need to know is this: rest isn’t going to permanently fix your knee pain. You have to fix the root of your problem, and the root is (not surprisingly) the second thing you need to know.
You can’t make the following logical mistake: thinking your knee is the thing that’s broken because the knee itself is the thing in pain.
Take a look at the pictures below. I cropped them out of some random YouTube videos.
Both of these guys are doing vertical jumps. The guy on the left claims a 30″ vertical jump. The guy on the right, 50″. (Which is very high, so let’s just say 40″ to account for internet inflation.) Honestly, the output doesn’t matter much.
Aside from the raw numbers, there’s a difference between the two: I consider one a knee pain candidate, and the other a knee pain conqueror.
Below are more still shots from YouTube, but with NFL combine athletes (a little less random than, well, random YouTubers).
Notice how their body positions are more similar to the guy on the right in the first picture? It’s no coincidence. (Rule 39: There is no such thing as coincidence.)
What’s it mean?
You might be wondering, “I see the difference, but what the heck does this got to do with chronic knee pain?”
Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. You’ve heard that saying before, right? Makes sense. But if you focus on the fire, you arsonist running out of the back door and breaking for the woods.
Chronic knee pain is a global phenomenon, so you have to zoom out and see beyond the knee itself.
But before I do that, I want to tell you about who I am and how I know all of this.
My name is Anthony Mychal. I’ve written for some fitness magazines and websites, like T-Nation, Schwarzenegger.com, Greatist, Elite FTS, Onnit, and STACK.
Some of the articles I wrote were about knee pain. But I’m not here to tout my credentials. I’m here to show you something.
One of the questions I’m asked most: do your knees still make that noise? And I get asked this because back in 2009 I put a video on YouTube of my snapping, crackling, and popping knees.
youtube
I was Googling for answers. I was posting on forums. I had just about every chronic knee pain possible. Tendonitis. Jumper’s knee. Tracking problems.
Here’s the part where I’m supposed to smile and say, “And I haven’t had an knee problems since I’ve found this magical cream!” But that’s not true… I still struggle with knee pain because I ignored my initial tendonitis. I thought I could fight through the pain.
Pshhhh. Ain’t nothing gonna’ stop me from playing my sports and lifting. I’ll get through this pain. Yeahhh. Only the weak care about pain.
And then my tendonitis turned into tendonosis. In other words, my short-term inflammation became long-term tissue degeneration.
If you love your sports and activities, the goal is simple: keep playing. That’s why you play through pain. But when you play through pain you cause long term problems that put you out of the game.
You’re responsible for maintaining your vehicle.
The kicker in my story? It wasn’t like I totally ignored my pain. I followed most highly touted advice, like resting, popping pain pills, and icing. One doctor even told me that my knees would never be quite “right” ever again.
I’ve wasted over $100 in medical fees and supplies in less than one year just trying to feel somewhat healthy. That’s not mentioning the braces, creams, and supplements.
I even tried to train my way out of my pain with leg extensions and leg curls. If you’re in as deep as I was, you’ve probably also done your fair share of terminal knee extensions.
All of these things made my knee worse.
Nothing worked.
Until…
The moment everything changed.
Is when I started to treat my knee as a victim, not a culprit. Your leg is made up of a ton of muscles and is controlled by three main joints: the hip, the knee, and the ankle. Anytime you move, force flows through these three joints. Up the chain, down the chain. The knee is the middle man.
So picture an assembly line. Three guys. You’re the middle guy. What happens when the guy to your right stops working? All his load gets thrown onto you. What happens when the guy to the left stops working? All the work you’re trying to do piles back up onto you.
There’s one equation you gotta’ remember. (Even if you hate math.)
Hips + Feet = Knees
And it just so happens that athletic ability follows a similar equation.
Hips + Feet = Athleticism
Remember those pictures from above? The body positioning? Stud athletes have similar body positions during exercises because they drive movement from similar muscles and structures. And those muscles and structures are also key in chronic knee pain.
Knee pain and athleticism.
If you have pain squatting (back squatting, front squatting, any kind of squatting), running, or jumping, you need to learn how to move more athletically.
This doesn’t just happen. You have to make it happen. You have to retrain your body. And this is what An Athlete’s Guide to Chronic Knee Pain is all about: a program designed to fix chronic knee pain that delivers a pleasant athletic side effect.
An Athlete’s Guide to Chronic Knee Pain is actually two programs smashed together.
The first is Theories and Solutions for Patellar Tendonitis, Jumper’s Knee, and Patellar Tracking Problems. It digs deeper into the relationship between the ankle, knee, and hip.
There is an eight week foundation program that builds muscle activation patterns and mobility with a specific selection of movements.
The goal is to kick muscles and movement patterns into gear that’ve long since been sleeping, and then build a ton of endurance to be able to maintain ability in those muscles forever and ever, no matter how fatigued you are.
The second is Increasing Strength and Explosiveness Through Barbell Exercises, Leaps, and Bounds. It transitions the newly found endurance and activation patterns into barbell exercise and athletic movement.
It builds positional awareness and correct activation patterns within those positions. It also teaches you how to absorb and propel force within those same positions. This second program is full of linked up videos to help you learn.
Both of these programs are crammed together. No dual fee. No leg extensions. No leg curls. No bed rest. Just a seriously comprehensive reconstruction of athletic and pain free lower body movement from the sand to the sky. 180 pages filled with information, pictures (exercises, stretches), and videos.
And some more bullet points because bullet points are cool:
It promotes lifelong change so that there is no regression in the rehabilitation
It constructs athletic movement so that your knees not only get better but your foundation for athleticism is enhanced
It includes a safe progression of exercises with little necessary equipment so you can do the training anywhere
It cures chronic knee pain so you can run amok, jump around like a wildebeest, or squat like a maniac
It relieves you of the mental anguish of being constantly down and out because of your chronic knee pain
It’s great for prehabilitation because it reworks movement to put less pressure on the knee=
Considering I bought Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch for just about double the price of An Athlete’s Guide to Chronic Knee Pain, I’d call it a game of priorities.
$33
(P.S. You’ve spent more on video games or on a night out at the bar.)
So consider what your knees are worth to you. Seriously. Think about it. What does your knee let you do that you love doing? How does it feel not being able to do it?
When I was unable to move and trick and lift, I lost myself. Don’t lose yourself. Give your knees the care they need so that you can do whatever makes you feel alive. So that you can do the things you love doing — the things that form your identity as a person.
That expensive treadmill is nice…if you’re healthy enough to use it. That monthly gym membership? Those kettlebells and barbell you just bought? All nice. But only if you can use them.
Worried about online scum?
Don’t worry, you’re protected under my No Ass-to-Risk Guarantee. My No Ass-to-Risk Guarantee is in place to prevent you from being misled or mistreated from online business malpractice. Everything that others choose to hide within asterisks at the bottom of pages are stated below, in addition to who exactly this product isn’t for. It’s all in an effort to better serve you.
First, An Athlete’s Guide to Chronic Knee Pain  is a digital product. You buy, you download instantly. The file is readable by Adobe or any other PDF reader. No shipping fees, so you save some bucks.
Second, your satisfaction is my guarantee. You may return this product if it doesn’t meet your expectations. Anytime. Anyplace. Even if my retailers refund period has expired (my retailer is ClickBank and they have a 60 day refund policy), I’ll handle it in house.
Third, An Athlete’s Guide to Chronic Knee Pain is for those with chronic knee problems (tendonitis, tendonosis, tracking issues), that want a better understanding of how chronic knee problems are created, that are willing to work hard to conquer their pain, looking to learn how to put less stress.
It’s not for those with serious internal injuries (ligament damage, meniscus injuries), those not ready to put in time and effort to fix their problem, and those that aren’t ready to do progressive bodyweight exercises.
Fourth, you have to be ready to work. This program is demanding. I’m not here to baby you. I’m here to fix you, and there’s a hard dose of reality with this. You’ve been moving the wrong way for a long time. You have to hit this hard to fix it.
Fifth, in regard to typical results, I always give the same disclaimer with any digital product: one of two things will happen when you buy my products.
You buy it and never use it. You might even return it. Can’t help you if you don’t put into practice what’s inside.
You’ll get it, follow through with the plan, learn something new about yourself, and see the resultant knowledge shine through with improvements in your body or life.
But don’t listen to me. I think I’ve talked enough anyway.
Here are what other people say.
Jon Call (Jujimufu), Trickster
When I developed a knee tendinopathy by tricking, I spent the next two years googling for crumbs on anything I could find on the topic and experimenting with self therapy. Anytime I’d find something I’d wonder if it was really applicable to my own situation. Much later, I felt I had gathered something likening to puzzle pieces, and was able to put these together to see a puzzle image take form. While I can make out the image of knee problems more clearly today, Anthony’s eBook is the finished puzzle with a clear image formed. I hate him for having finished this puzzle after I had suffered my own knee problems! But I will forgive him, because I learned some really neat, and new knee tips in this book I didn’t know, and haven’t seen elsewhere!
Rasmus Ott, Trickster
Me and Anthony did some video correspondence about my jumpers knee and he gave me a lot of good exercises and stretching techniques. He provided a great push forward to having no major problems and these days I’m back to tricking on my left knee with no big problems. (Picture provided by: Nanna Ward.)
Simon Jacobsson
The orthopedist probably would have recommended another surgery. But without Anthony I would still be a lost little puppy just trying lots of things with half assed effort. Getting consultation from him (who I sincerely believe in and really look up to when it comes to this) really motivated me. Contacting him was the smartest thing I’ve done for my training!
Josh Beaty
I played college hoops at a small college and never had any injuries until I turned 30. I started having knee tracking issues 3 years ago after I got an athletic pubalgia injury while playing flag football. That was a very painful injury to my groin area. After that “healed” (resumed activity to early) I started getting pretty serious knee pain while playing basketball due to compensating from the hip injury. I had lost control of my hip and my knee was making up the difference. I also have a very significant anterior pelvic tilt which contributed to both injuries I’m sure.
Anyway, because of your info I am able to play basketball again pain-free and my knee has drastically improved. This knee tracking pain had been nagging me for over a year and it was very frustrating. I am not quite 100% yet in terms of strength and confidence but will get there. My goal is to completely eliminate discomfort and doubt in the knee and eventually dunk a basketball again.
Thanks so much. I have bought a lot of fitness and nutrition crap and your stuff is legit and truly improved my life.
Park Firebaugh
I tweeted that I loved your book before I had even finished it. Today, I viewed all the videos, completed it and I am stunned at how comprehensive and exhaustive this is. I can’t believe the knowledge you have at your age. You have covered every angle there is and intercepted all manner of backsliding and “executive decision” modifications that many will try to make. I would think it would have taken many years of observing personal sabotage to acquire this foresight. Don’t take this the wrong way, but I remember looking at your photo on T Nation and thinking, “What the fuck, he’s just a kid” However, it’s obvious from the methodical thought process and well crafted writing that you are wise beyond your years.
Jahed Momand
I just finished your book. I was having patellar tendon pain EVERY TIME I stood up from a chair. I’m now extending the hips similar to the way you described in your RDL chapter, and the pain has disappeared. I’m already impressed. Now to translate this to Olympic weightlifting…
Vaughan Carder
Just wanted to say the Athletes guide to chronic knee pain is an AWESOME resource & a must for anyone with legs! Can’t wait to implement this stuff to my own rehab of some banged up legs!
Questions, Answers
Q: Is this program for a beginner?
A: Yes, it can be used by someone that has no formal training. I will say that a background in barbell training is useful to pick up on the terminology, but it’s not life or death requirement.
Q: Is there an age requirement?
A: No, absolutely NONE. All exercises begin at bodyweight and are progressed in a sequence. There is NO heavy loading in the initial program, and the second book (that has heavy loading) is optional. The book, however, is written for athletes — so keep that in mind.
Q: How long is the program?
A: It lasts forever. Don’t think I’m kidding. The initial rehabilitation program is eight weeks long, but the principles you learn will carry with you for the rest of your life. This is one of the reasons behind the effectiveness of the program. The second half of the rehabilitation (strength part) takes places after.
Q: How often are the workouts?
A: Every day. Or five days per week. We’re reprogramming the body. It takes time and frequency. If you can’t handle this, then this product isn’t for you. I’ll say it again, if you’re not willing to put in the work, this system will not work for you.
Q: How long do the workouts take?
A: They shouldn’t take more than an hour and can be done in the convenience of your own home. The only equipment needed is an exercise band during the first eight weeks. After, a sequence of progressions is used with a barbell and those workouts will take longer. It’s the nature of the beast.
Q: Does this come in the mail?
A: Nope. Once your payment is received, an electronic copy of the book is sent to your e-mail address.
Q: Can I still do lower body exercises while on the program?
A: Sadly, no. Squatting and deadlifting will have to take a back seat for the duration of this program because we’re reprogramming the body. You can’t heal yourself if you continue to expose yourself to pain. The movements will be reintroduced gradually and sequentially.
Q: What separates you from everyone else?
A: I use a unique approach that focuses on every joint in the lower body, except the knee. I fully believe that the knee pain is a victim, not a culprit.
Q: What if the program doesn’t work for me?
A: Consider it free. I’m willing to put my reputation on the line. You pay for quality work, and if it isn’t up to your standards you’ll get a full refund. ClickBank handles all returns within 60 days of purchase. After that, I’ll handle returns “in-house.”
Q: I have some more questions. How do I get in touch with you?
A: Want to know something? Ask me: anthony /at/ anthonymychal dot com
Yours in health,
Anthony

A high performance organization works on a specifically curated blueprint of their own success mapped out months in advance. They are focused. They are motivated. They are disciplined. Even to the point of being sentient enough to recognize not only the competitor’s worth and advantage in the market but identifying their own flaws and mistakes and working on them.
What is a high performance organization?
HPO Framework
What core values might be found in high performance organizations?
How do you build a high performance culture?
What is a high performance organization?
A high performance organization is one that operates with a tunnel vision focused only on its success. It is one wherein every individual is aware of what their specific job is, how it relates to their neighbors’ and the impact of their own contribution to the furthering of the organization’s agendas. It is one that is consistently outperforming its competition. The mark of a high performance organization is seen not only in its performance measures such as its sustained earning, social impact and market share growth but is also visible in its management abilities, and employee motivation and coordination.
To put in perspective, a high performance organization is like that speeding boat whose rowers are in sync with each other. There is no confusion about the direction they’re taking. There is a leader steering, focusing on what is ahead. There are the rowers, among whom every individual is performing their designated part correctly leading to a collective effort in moving up fast and swift. The opposite of that is a non-high performance organization – where sync is an illusion and direction is a social construct humans were fundamentally meant to sabotage.
To prevent such corporate disasters, and save the economy from utter ruination, a concept, known as the HPO Framework, has been developed.
What is the HPO framework?
The high performance organization framework is a scientifically validated structure proven to bring out the best results in an organization. The HPO framework does not work like the tablet of 10 commandments set in stone that you need to follow word by word or undergo eternal, or in this case, commercial suffering. The HPO Framework can enable an organization to decide what they need to focus on. What they need to improve. But will it dole out a step by step recipe with listed ingredients and exact measurements of quantities for each ingredient? No. Rather, the HPO framework is a concept. A set of guidelines.
It is upon every individual manager to perceive and enact the HPO framework as they see fit, designing it with their own inputs, insights, creativity and experience according to the best needs of their respective companies to transform it into a sustainable, high performance organization.
What core values might be found in high performance organizations?
While there is no set number of values an organization must have in order to be deemed a high-performance organization, there are certain values at large that are considered vital and are most abundantly found in such organizations. To briefly detail a few –
1. Dedication to excellence
A high performance culture is one that fosters excellence in its employees. That is the distinction between an average company and an above average one– their strive for excellence. It is important for any high-performance organization to have a standard of excellence set for their organization. What after that though? Is it enough to simply put in these expected standards of excellence on an orientation card in attractive font? Or perhaps looming at the entrance or on the walls of your institution? Hardly.
One can only expect successful results when such standards of excellence are imbibed within the hierarchy, management and minutest workings of the organization. Beyond that, the employees as well should be given the prerogative, authority and support to be able to work and innovate in ways that are keeping with and upholding the standards and values of the organization. Otherwise these standards become simply reduced to acting as wall décor and accessories.
When every member of an organization is committed to excellence, to an elite standard of work, only then can problems such as low output and productivity, disconnect and disputes be reduced. Besides eradicating such problems, they also serve to provide swift and effective solutions preventing the otherwise inevitable downhill slide into the pit of a crisis.
2. A clear objective and purpose
Having a clear picture in mind of what you want, and where you intend to take the company is an essential and core value for any high-performance organization. Without a sense of purpose and direction, no pace or guiding light, it will be no surprise if the company finds itself hurtling off the rungs of the corporate ladder at breakneck speed. If the organization itself has no idea where it is going the people on the inside and outside are not liable to know either. For a high performance organization, a clear statement regarding the purpose of the existence of the company will go a long way in not only initiating and arming its employees with a mission but will also work as an incentive to attract exterior support, influence, funds and resources.
3. Ability and readiness to adapt and change
For a high performance organization to surpass their competitors and/or maintain the status quo it is highly important for them to be able to adapt to changing times and successfully change or add to their ways in a manner that is effective and productive. Being stubbornly set in the old ways in the name of tradition can predictably cause more harm than benefit; especially in today’s fast evolving times.
Not only should they be open to taking such a step but also be able to anticipate the ways in which the changes will affect the organization and the hindrances they are likely to face. Another important aspect is for them to make appropriate allocation of responsibility of heading and management of these changes to the best suited candidates. It would also be proactive to be able to express and explain clearly the reason for the changes.
4. Developing a culture of continuous learning
An organization that is self-complacent will forever remain stagnant. There will be no moving forward. Or growth. For anything to grow it requires an input of materials. For something to go in and then manifest in the form of growth. If there’s no input happening, that too will show. Eventually a stagnant organization is likely to, much sooner rather than later, run dry and join history. People who constantly seek knowledge, and have a thirst for learning, such people are continuously rebuilding themselves. Reforming themselves according to new data presented. Getting with the times. Adapting. Such people, belonging to the elite band of high performance culture, tend to view meetings with community and staff, and performance evaluation sessions as an opportunity to learn, grow and develop as opposed to the view of them being tedious and a waste of time. They embrace and actively seek tools and opportunities to learn such as online training classes, reading, seminars, web-based seminars and all the means made easily available by technology. They acquire skills to become more effective in their jobs, get promotions and develop their skills. They learn new things and share that knowledge to promote a collective advancement of the organization and its employees.
How do you build a high performance organization?
A high performance organization / culture is a set of conduct, standards and norms that lead an organization to become a better, constantly advancing version of itself that achieves superior results. A few of the factors of building such a culture in any organization are as follows:
1. Elucidate values, reinstate their importance
In the creation of a high performance culture, the values you choose to imbibe play a vital role. Making your values clear, and communicating them on a daily basis will help increase the motivation of the employees and offer them clarity on what expectations their job entails. In the culture of a high performance organization values can act as the driving force of the general behavior of the organization and define the company as a whole while also contributing to the overall success of the company.
2. Encourage positive behavior and mindset
The most worthy leaders of all ages, especially in today’s modern era of mutual benefits and stressed importance of acknowledgement, are those who can find it within themselves to be sentient. To be rewarding. And to be approachable. In purview of that, a leader in any high performance organization should reward his employees for a job well done, or at least, for one exceptionally well done. Whether it be individuals who diligently uphold the values of the company, or those who display that extra spark of creativity and interest in their work instead of a monotonous approach. Not only will this aid in boosting their morale and encouraging them to continue to do so, but also simultaneously provide incentives for other employees to follow suit.
Overcoming negative thoughts and developing a positive and confident attitude will help add value to the company. The employees of a given organization shoulder a large chunk of the responsibility of its success; constant reinforcement of a positive and motivated environment among them will go a long way in contributing to the success of the company.
3. Open line of communication
Nobody likes to be stonewalled. Nor a hoity-toity unapproachable snob. Working for one is certainly out the window. In the unfortunate event of discovering oneself in such a situation, one is likely to revert to Grade 3 behavior of dislike and disdain. If not in front of the object of disdain, then most definitely behind their back. Like Aristotle of the modern times would have said, grade 3 behavior of dislike and disdain does not a high performance culture make. Quite the opposite, in fact, if you give it any thought at all.
To avoid such an occurrence, employees should be granted the right and freedom to an unbiased and open line of communication. Superiors should strive to make themselves available in the matters of hearing and addressing concerns. In the efforts to avoid a bad case of corporate Chinese Whispers, flow of information between the levels of hierarchy should not be made tedious and unwelcoming. Of one of the characteristics of a high performance organization is that it requires an atmosphere of good communication to function at its best and most optimum.
4. Empowerment of the employees
While a leader is trusted to make the best, most profitable decisions with the organization and the employees in mind, a good leader must also work towards empowering his/her employees and encouraging their growth – providing any means of training whenever necessary. The employees should be afforded a show of trust, and freedom. To further the spirit of trust and communication, leaders should be open to small talk with their employees.
5. Obtain feedback
Maintaining a culture of feedback is necessary for a positive environment and a successful high performance organization. A feedback-rich culture will provide insightful data on the general psyche of the employees and their opinions and views on the work culture and environment. The leader should take efforts to make the necessary improvements as per the feedback gathered.
6. Focus on the right incentives
While perks and monetary incentives are great motivators, in order to maintain an optimum environment for a high performance organization, employees should be offered supportive leadership, a bias free treatment barring favoritism, room for growth, transparency in communication and feedback, a sense of purpose and importance as well as appreciation whenever required.

Getting started with coaching for business leaders
Over the last decades, coaching has established itself as a vital domain in the overall business landscape. According to the 2016 industry report of the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the coaching industry grew by 19% between 2011 and 2015 to revenues of USD 2.4 billion and enjoys a continued positive outlook. The report also mentions the topic leader-as-coach as one of the key future trends in the industry. In this context, the question arises: Can a boss also be a coach? Or even more: Do people “have” to be good coaches today, if they want to be effective leaders?
Tumblr media
Relevance – from commander to coach
The days in which one leader did the thinking and subordinates executed are long gone. Today, everyone in an organization needs to do the thinking. This is simply because organizational surroundings have become increasingly complex and constantly changing so that organizations need to constantly change as well in order to survive. To attain and maintain such agility, organizations need everyone’s analytical and creative capacity, constant learning and - to bring it all together - a new model of leadership. It is in this context that coaching – as the art of helping people realize their potential and increase performance - has become a core skill of aspiring leaders. As such, the leader’s role moves away from solely providing direction, devising and deciding to combine it with asking questions, facilitating, supporting and empowering. Consequently, the initial question shouldn’t be whether bosses “can” be good coaches, but “how” they can become good coaches.
Perspectives to get started with coaching
This blogpost intends to present three different perspectives that help leaders get started in the field of coaching. Those perspectives do not claim to be either collectively exhaustive or mutually exclusive. Instead, they help to get a quick overview and shall serve as a basis for further engagement with the subject matter.
Four Styles of Coaching
The first perspective by researchers Herminia Ibarra and Anne Schoular, delivered via a simple two-by-two matrix, provides an overview of different coaching styles. The vertical axis denotes the information the coach enters into the relationship, i.e., the advice and expertise given to the coachee. By contrast, the horizontal axis denotes the energy the coach can elicit from the coachee, i.e., the insights and solutions the coachee can create as a response to the intervention.
Tumblr media
The first style technically refers to not coaching at all – also known as Laissez-faire. Here, the leader gives little input, but there is also little energetic output from the coachee as a response. When all team members are working effectively and efficiently on their own, then bosses do not need to interfere. However, if teams do not perform well when unsupervised, this can be a risky approach.
The directive style in the top left of the graphic implies that the coach tends to supply comparatively much information but tends to evoke little motivational energy in the coachee. This is what many know as “their boss telling me what to do and how to do it”. While it can accelerate a process, it tends to neglect the much-needed individual and organizational learning.
Moving to the right-hand side of the graph, the non-directive style focuses on asking questions, listening, and facilitating a process so that the subordinate can develop herself. Consequently, it requires little directional input but can produce considerable momentum on the part of the coachee, if done well. This style is suitable to inspire engagement and promote individual and organizational learning. However, it requires a minimum level of coaching competence on the part of the coach as well as sufficient time for quality interventions.
Eventually, the situational style represents a combination of the directive and non-directive approach. It requires both a high level of coaching competence as well as sensitivity to understand whether a context could rather benefit from a directive or a non-directive approach. Moments for non-directive approaches can be, e.g., when an individual takes on a stretch assignment, faces a decision between multiple options, or find herself amid a conflict with another individual. By contrast, directive approaches are useful, for instance, when an individual needs detailed instruction, technical guidance or needs to change behavior in little time. All mentioned styles have their advantages and disadvantages. In the end, it is crucial to select the style that best fits the demands of the situation.
Three Action Fields of Excellent Coaches
The second perspective deals with three action fields of excellent coaches. The first is promoting learning agility. That means supporting people in staying flexible, growing from mistakes and responding to challenges. Also, it is crucial to help people in moving from a fixed mindset, that can cause fear of making mistakes, to a growth mindset that allows people to believe that they can grow and succeed, if they invest sufficient effort and obtain required support. Eventually, promoting learning agility entails to ensuring trust-based relationships so people feel comfortable to navigate limitations and make mistakes.
The next action field is holding coaching conversations. Here, it is one can follow a three-step approach. The first step is to check for coaching readiness, i.e., to identify whether it is a good time for both the coachee and the coach, and whether both are receptive to coaching. Should there be little time, competing commitments and thoughts, it might be better to reschedule. The second step is to have the coaching conversation. The base to start with curiosity and an open mind about what a coaching conversation will bring. The conversation shall serve the coachee to engage in deep reflection on a recent situation. Therefore, it is crucial to actively listen and be fully attentive, not only to verbal but also non-verbal expressions of the coachee. Another main tool of coaching is to ask questions that lead the coachee to reflect in various ways about her challenge. Open-ended questions prove particularly useful in this respect. Eventually, it is appropriate to offer your perspective as guidance and support (so long as it does not force a solution), and agree on next steps.
The third action field of coaches is giving constructive feedback. Like coaching, it is useful in enabling development. To begin with: not everyone likes giving or receiving feedback – being open about fears can help moving past them. Also, feedback should be given only with permission and without much delay after I particular incident. Additionally, from my own experience the global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company stresses the importance of listening first, sharing feedback in small doses, and sharing concrete situation evidence when making points.
The GROW model of coaching
One specific model that can provide structure and orientation during one or several coaching conversations is John Whitmore’s classic GROW model as described in his book “Coaching for Performance”. GROW stands for goal, reality, options, and will. Goal does not refer to the coachee’s overall goals in life. Rather, it demands to establish with the coachee, what it is exactly that she wants to get out of the conversation. Whereas goal points to where the coachee wants to get to, Reality is about where the coachee is now in the process. Asking various types of open questions can help with obtaining a comprehensive view of the coachee’s reality. Caution is due with using “why”-questions as they can be perceived as judging or intimidating and thus limit the coachee’s development progress. Options refer to the fact that people often feel stuck in their progress. Coaching can help generate or uncover options that coachees had not conceived of yet. The question “and what else” combined with the readiness to endure breaks of silence, as simple as it may sound, can have a significant effect on the ability to come up with options. Once a broad range of options is on the table, the job of the coach is to help the coachee get into depth and explore different implications of pursuing an individual option. Finally, Will ties the individual parts of the conversation together and funnels them into two questions. Question one is “What will you do?” Should the coachee not have a clear idea about what she will do, coach and coachee will have to step back and go through the previous steps. The second question asks the coachee to assess the likelihood that the stated intention will be executed. Again, should the likelihood of the intention not exceed 80%, it is worth going back and work out an option that has a higher probability of realization.

And now what?
Every beginning is - well, not easy. However, if this made appetite for more, there are plenty of resources to continue your coaching journey. The books Coaching for Performance by John Whitmore, The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier, and Mindset by Carol Dweck proved especially influential in this respect. Should you feel exhaustion along the way, be reminded that becoming an excellent coach is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes continuous practice, resilience, and above all philanthropy (in the truest sense of the word). Thus, ration your energy and do less but regularly. Also, coaching does not always have to happen via dedicated conversations. Instead, leaders who want to coach can make use of daily interactions, e.g., regular briefings, project updates, milestone completions as well as encourage people to actively seek feedback and coaching. Last but not least, whenever there is little time and lots of to-dos, or whenever there are second thoughts about the payoffs of coaching - remember that coaching not only helps unlock the potential of the coachee, but fosters the overall organizational effectiveness, efficiency, and ability to learn, bounce back and adapt.

The Physical and Mental Benefits of Having House Plants
Wellness has become one of the buzzwords of the 21st century. And in this dystopian future we’re living in, there’s more focus and conversation about looking after ourselves than ever before, as we’ve never needed it more.
One of the ways you can inject a bit of wellness into your life while simultaneously improving the aesthetic of your living space is by becoming a plant parent.
Indoor houseplants have become increasingly popular as we learn more about what they offer to us.
Physical Health Benefits of Having House Plants
Having plants in your home offers physical health benefits. Here are some of them:
Purified Air
One of the most clear-cut and undisputed benefits of having house plants is their ability to purify air. Why spend a bunch of money on an electronic air purifier which uses electricity to power itself?
With air quality constantly decreasing, some houseplants will do the job for you. They are much cheaper to acquire and look after and they look better, too. They also reduce the amount of dust in your home by giving your space more of a surface area for it to land on.
Reduced Blood Pressure
Plenty of studies on houseplants found that they have positive benefits on health. Some of these studies show that when patients were in a room with houseplants, they had lower systolic blood pressure.
Having high blood pressure can lead to some very serious health conditions, including heart failure, vision loss, stroke, and kidney failure. Your blood pressure will be dictated by your lifestyle, genetics, medical history and not by how many houseplants you own, but every little helps, right?
Reduced Pain
Having house plants can reduce physical pain, too. Patients who had houseplants in their hospital rooms reported feeling less pain, fatigue, and anxiety than those who didn’t.
If you are someone who deals with pain frequently, then some house plants might provide you with some relief, even if it is just a little bit.
Reduces Sickness Symptoms
Offices that have houseplants in them were found to report sickness rate reductions of 60%. That’s more than half of sickness in the office eradicated, just from investing in some house plants. They also look great around an office, too.
They bring some color and life into spaces that quite often need those badly.
Trap Harmful Gases
There’s a specific type of harmful gas that gets released when you cook called VOCs. House plants are really good at absorbing those through their leaves and the soil.
Mental Benefits of Owning House Plants
Nature’s effects on mental health have been well-documented for a while. Tapanese practice of ‘forest bathing’ (shinrin-yoku) is a testament to that.
Increased Productivity
Placing house plants in an office doesn’t just reduce the amount of sickness, but also increase output and productivity. This is probably something to do with house plants helping to release endorphins in your brain. They promote greater focus and energy.
The exact science behind this is yet to be nailed down but there is evidence that suggest how seeing a variety of plant shapes, sizes, and species can lead to a positive boost in productivity.
Improved Mood and Reduced Stress
Exposure to nature makes us happier. As previously touched on, the Japanese have a practice called shinrin-yoku. It’s known as forest bathing or forest therapy.
By going on a walk and completely immersing yourself into a natural world, you engage with your senses more. This can be a great way to practice mindfulness.
You may not be able to install a full forest into your home but some house plants can boost that link with nature. They can improve your mood and reduce your stress levels.

Having a Hobby
Having an active hobby helps to occupy the mind. It’s by tending to your plants and engaging in this hobby that endorphins are released in your brain. This can help with conditions like anxiety and depression.
With a house plant, you’ll have something to look after, too. You’ll have something you can nurture and grow. Seeing that progress can help you to stay dedicated to them and invested in your hobby as a plant parent.
5 Houseplants That Will Boost Your Well-being
Well, if you’re reading this and thinking: Where do I begin when buying house plants?
Here are our five recommendations for house plants.
Swiss Cheese Plant
The Swiss Cheese Plant doesn’t just look really tropical. It also brings a more dramatic edge to any space because it’s visually striking and great for filtering light in your home.
Aloe Vera
This is a gorgeous plant that has an array of health benefits. It has many medicinal uses, such as healing sunburn, moisturizing, reducing dental plaque, and lowering blood sugar levels. They also produce babies so you can acquire more and more.
Bromeliad Pineapple
Via gardeningexpress.co.uk
It doesn’t just look amazing, but it is amazing. This plant has the unique ability to release oxygen at night. It also releases an enzyme called bromylaine, which is a natural anti-inflammatory. It even helps reduce snoring.
Lavender
A well-known plant, lavender fields in bloom are one of the most striking places you can go visit. Their deep, calming purple color brings a welcome splash of vibrancy to any space. Due to its scent, lavender helps with relaxation. It can also be used as a culinary herb.
ZZ Plant
Via laidbackgardener.blog
Not only does its leaf shape and size bring some variety, which can help with your productivity, the ZZ plant is also known for its air-purifying abilities. It’s known as the Fortune Tree in Feng Shui which is supposed to bring luck into the home of whoever owns it.
Checkout this article if you’d like to learn more about these plants, how to care for them, as well as a selection of other houseplants with “superpowers”.
Houseplants are a fantastic investment for your life, home, and health. We’ve only named five above, but there are literally hundreds of different plants and species for you to explore and adopt!

Overcoming Content Challenges
Tumblr media
Authors: Steve Glancey and Bryan Meszaros from the Digital Signage Connection
Although often relegated to the back seat, the process of content creation drives the success of a digital signage program. It is therefore essential to develop a mental map of each component stage, from strategizing and budgeting, through development and optimization, and to address the unique requirements and challenges of each one. With a clear plan in place, potential stall-outs are easily avoided, and obstacles, overcome. What follows is a collection of tips and tricks that we have developed in the course of our experience, and found helpful in navigating some of the difficulties that inevitably accompany a creative undertaking. We here pass them on to you to help better position you for your next endeavor.
Obstacle #1: Project Ownership
The nature of project ownership is critical and, unfortunately, often blurred in understanding. Is the person being said to "own" a project responsible, by definition, for all aspects of its design and production? In a word: no! Rather, they manage and monitor the numerous interlocking parts of the creative engine - the gathering of assets, messaging, design, and approval - each of which is the domain of a different person, or team. This last, the granting of approval, is generally understood, and intended as the concluding step. However, its finality hinges upon the clear delineation and coordination of the preceding steps, without which requests for further changes are far more likely to arise. Changing even one textual element could disrupt the flow, look and feel of the whole product, and force the designer to go back and rework it from the ground up to accommodate the change.
Obstacle #2: Content Strategy
Designers create content within "closed environments;" they alone experience, and interact with their creations during the design process. Yet given that their creations are ultimately destined for display in "open environments" subject to such variables as viewing distance, demographics, audience journey, time of day etc., it's important to keep in mind that every content piece adhering perfectly to fundamental principles of design in the abstract carries no guarantee of effectiveness when it goes "live." All these variables, and more, should be researched and applied to your content: type, structure, design, refresh rate etc. as they will deeply impact the audience engagement with, and effectiveness of the intended message.
Obstacle #3: Playlist Strategy
Optimizing your playlist requires the delicate counterbalancing of numerous considerations, all within the framework of your budget and network objectives. Loop length, for example, must be in step with audience dwell time. Make your playlist too long, and it will be a waste of network resources; too short, and you will forfeit network opportunities. Couple dwell time with the return rate of your audience; multiply by an effective frequency of 4-7 (the number of times a viewer needs to be exposed to a message before it is thoroughly communicated); and add to that any wish to day-part, or employ triggers, feeds, or logic that activates different content depending on the time, or viewer body-language or demographics and you will begin to get the measure of what it is to develop a strategic plan that truly capitalizes on the possibilities of digital signage.
Obstacle #4: Gathering Assets
The process of gathering assets is more complicated than the phrase would suggest, as they are not, in fact, necessarily useable simply by virtue of being "digital" - a reality difficult to concede for clients unfamiliar with concepts such as image quality, and display resolution. Fortunately, a little proactive education explaining such fundamentals within the specific context of your plan to develop content for a client (using which editing program, and in which output format) often goes a long way towards bringing about the submission better-quality files, even if they are not all vector graphics, files of 300dpi or more are ideal. Of course, there is always the possibility that there are no usable assets to uncover. Sometimes the image quality of a graphic is too poor, or the asset does not exist in a version that supports editing, requiring you to start from scratch. The bottom line is: avoid assuming anything about your client's level of knowledge or organization, and be prepared to explain why their idea and/or materials may need to be scrapped or revised.
Obstacle #5: Content Licensing
Content licensing does not abide by the "finders, keepers" rule. Possession of an asset does not necessarily confer the right to display it in a commercial setting, even if it was acquired "for free" - a reality sometimes difficult to accept in a world where side-stepping costs is so often possible. However, several lawsuits over the years have been brought against digital signage companies whose network owners failed to negotiate an agreement (either in the form of a one-time payment, or an ongoing subscription) with the owner of every asset in their playlist. Given the costs incurred by such a lawsuit, it's essential to address licensing costs early and often, and to ensure that a line item appears in the budget from the very beginning. "But that CNN feed says that it's free..." Look again at the terms. Free news feeds, and most free or inexpensive weather feeds are available only for non-commercial use.
Obstacle #6: Creative Budgeting
Talking money is like talking politics: everyone has an opinion, and no one is right. The question of budget must therefore be addressed both early in the development process, and regularly throughout the lifecycle of a project, for content carries a cost not only to create, but to maintain. The viewing frequency, and relationship it bears with its physical context give it a limited shelf-life, and while you would ideally have a surplus of content from which to chose, and/or assets with an automated feature, the project will, in fact, require ongoing programming, editing and management. True, most CMS (content management systems) now support advance scheduling, but someone still needs to oversee that task. The success or failure of a digital signage project therefore will depend on the project owners ability to accurately and creatively manage the fixed initial costs and variable ongoing costs to collect, license, and schedule content assets all powered by the most costly line item: human capital.
Obstacle #7: Stretching the Dollars
Were money not an obstacle, we would all simply hire ABC or Lucasfilm to build out our playlists, and keep them fresh. But money is an obstacle. Budgetary constraints come into play for everyone at some point. That is why I am a proponent of building playlists with an eye to maximizing value, as opposed to maxing-out one's resources. This can be done in a variety of ways, including investing up-front in custom templates; reusing assets that your company originally used elsewhere; leveraging user-generated, and data-driven content; strategically recycling content; and outsourcing parts of your playlist to licensed feeds or competitively priced creative agencies.
Obstacle #8: CMS and Hardware
This subject, once broached, easily leads the ensuing discussion down the proverbial rabbit hole, but my goal is simply to highlight a few of the cascading effects of your choice in CMS, and hardware. With respect to CMS, some solutions are new, and less refined due either to their time on the market, or target simplicity, and for content managers posting only simple messages, they present an appropriate solution. However, with simplicity come limitations, and complex networks may feel the lack of editing and programming options, readymade app stores, KPIs, feeds, triggers, localization, advertising market platform integration, weighted playlists and logic playback configuration. They may also feel limited by the breath of file-type options, API, security settings, reliability, remote management features, emergency messaging capabilities, etc. If so, there are other more established, robust CMS to consider.
The playback quality of the hardware you choose is also something to consider carefully, as it has a profound impact of viewers' visual engagement with your message. And finally, careful thought must be put into your connectivity strategy. Will you connect your system via Wi-Fi for which you pay with a monthly bill, or through a mobile provider that you pay by the gigabyte - a costly proposition if your playlist includes large video files or frequent content updates. There is no right answer, just the solution that best fits your content strategy.
Obstacle #9: Optimization
The effectiveness of your content is in direct measure to the quality of your messaging, so even the most thoughtfully designed content campaign can benefit from regular, controlled tests of its effectiveness. A/B testing or before and after comparisons are the easiest, most affordable kind of assessment, and can bring to light adjustments likely to increase the ROI (return on investment) of the campaign at hand. For example, how did one store do vs. the other without the promotion running or using the same content in two different locations with a slight change to the CTA? Audience engagement and reaction are surprisingly difficult to anticipate; that which is relevant, which resonates with viewers, and speaks to them in "their language" changes all the time, so if effectiveness is your end, self-assessment is your means.
Obstacle #10: Creating Value
What objective do you aim to meet by means of your digital signage network? From your viewers' point of view, a digital sign is not much different from a traditional printed sign. Both boil down to a message on a wall, and therein lies their value for audience and advertiser alike. Why then is so much attention and money diverted to the frame and mounting instead of the message? Mounts, frames, and hardware are inherently depreciating assets. It is the quality of your content strategy and execution that will make your 2-million dollar investment in digital signage worth 1 million, or 5. Funneling every piece of content through your network objective (ROO/ROI) is therefore the aim to which you should direct your primary energy as a network operator on day one and year five.
