         there’s  not  much  that  could’ve  prepared  milo  for  what  life  would  look  like  once  nursing  school  actually  started.  the  lectures  ,  the  simulation  labs  ,  the  health  screenings  ,  the  endless  hours  spent  rotating  through  hospitals  ,  clinics  ,  nursing  homes  —  all  of  it  blending  into  one  long  ,  exhausting  blur.  and  it’s  only  week  five  of  the  first  semester.  by  the  time  he  stumbles  back  into  the  dorm  ,  he’s  running  on  fumes.  he’s  never  slept  better  in  his  life  ,  and  that  says  a  lot  ,  because  milo  really  likes  sleeping.

         his  roommate  ,  on  the  other  hand  ,  seems  to  exist  on  the  opposite  end  of  the  spectrum.  at  first  ,  milo  thought  it  was  a  comp-sci  thing  —  staying  up  late  ,  glued  to  his  laptop  ,  probably  doing  weird  hacker  things  he’d  never  understand.  but  then  he  noticed  the  little  details.  like  the  way  zack  quietly  took  something  from  his  drawer  every  night  they  were  both  in  ,  as  if  part  of  some  unspoken  ritual.  and  milo  ,  being  milo  —  openly  nosy  in  the  way  only  he  can  be  —  asked.  obviously.  straight  up.

         insomnia.  he  doesn’t  know  much  about  it  ,  not  in  any  professional  way  —  at  least  not  yet.  just  that  it  sucks  ,  and  messes  with  your  entire  body  and  brain  and  spirit.  but  zack  hasn’t  snapped  at  him.  not  once.  and  honestly  ?  milo  kind  of  admires  him  for  that.

         because  god  knows  milo  talks.  a  lot.  and  zack  ?  zack  just  listens.  it  feels  borderline  unfair  that  milo  gets  to  talk  himself  straight  into  peaceful  ,  drooling  slumber  while  zack  just  …  stays  awake.

         tonight’s  no  different.  he  probably  got  two  hours  max  before  he  stirs  awake  again  —  thanks  to  the  absolute  fever  dream  he  just  had  (  he  was  being  chased  by  a  giant  sentient  thermometer  that  kept  yelling ,  '' you’re  not  sterile  enough ! ''  while  he  tried  to  do  a  patient’s  blood  pressure  ).

         when  he  blearily  opens  his  eyes  ,  the  soft  glow  of  a  phone  screen  catches  his  attention.  zack  ,  of  course.  milo’s  eyes  flick  to  the  clock  :  3:02  a.m.  of  course.

         he  debates.  closes  his  eyes.  sighs.  fights  the  heavy  pull  of  sleep  —  and  then  suddenly  ,  like  his  body’s  decided  without  him  ,  he  jolts  upright.  like  someone  yanked  him  out  of  a  nightmare.  he  groans  ,  head  protesting  the  sudden  movement  ,  then  squints  through  the  dark.  he  can  feel  zack’s  gaze  on  him  already.

         ''  sorry  …  bad  dream  ,  ''  he  mutters  ,  rubbing  the  heel  of  his  palm  against  his  eye.  his  mind  is  racing  ,  trying  to  figure  out  how  to  ask  this  in  the  least  weird  way  possible.  ''  i  ...  ''  his  hand  presses  to  his  chest  ,  a  little  dramatic  maybe  ,  but  it  sells  the  vibe.  ''  i  have  a  really  weird  question.  ''

         he  finally  properly  meets  zack’s  eyes  ,  heart  hammering  in  a  way  that  feels  way  more  intense  than  it  should.  ''  do  you  ...  uhm  ...  ''  teeth  sink  into  his  bottom  lip.  he  hesitates  ,  just  for  a  beat  ,  before  pushing  through.  ''  do  you  mind  if  i  ...  sleep  in  your  bed  ?  with  you  ?  ''

         he  winces  at  his  own  delivery.  yeah  ,  it  sounded  way  more  awkward  out  loud.  but  he  adds  ,  quieter  ,  softer  now  —  ''  i  think  …  i  just  don’t  wanna  go  back  to  sleep  like  this.  ''
