I've been saving these until I have thought about something in particular to ramble about so get ready,

I am obsessed with the vibe of the Wright's being born performers. Before choosing to pursue law, Phoenix was an art student, implied to either be pursuing illustration or Shakespearian theater. I like to think that part of the appeal of criminal law for him was how dramatized everything was. It's more about weaving a story that connects all the dots provided for the evidence and witness statements than about, you know, knowledge of the law. It's about plot twists and last-minute saves and becoming the sturdy pillar for your client. Phoenix only chooses cases that are so wacky and hopeless that make for excellent stories. What I'm saying is that Phoenix lives for the drama and how the courtroom turns into a stage where he has to convince everyone else of the story he's piecing together that very moment. There's just something so theatric about yelling 'objection' and slamming the desk and making some improvised quips to taunt the guy you're arguing against.

I'm also of the opinion that the whole Beanix persona was originally intended to be more of a character that Phoenix put up to get Kristoph to believe that he had given up. It's clear that it was all about hiding his true thoughts and his identity from anyone who would recognize his spikey hair and wiggly eyebrows. He deliberately stopped wearing his iconic blue and general business casual getup and you cannot tell me that there wasn't so much thought into how he started to present himself. He's known for being highly saturated and spikey and generally pretty emotionally open so this character he built is the exact opposite of all those things and it's totally on purpose.

And just like Trucy, this character performance is a coping mechanism to keep themselves safe and seemingly confident. They both smile so convincingly and refuse to let anyone know if something is wrong. They're both manipulative but not out of malice, out of need for survival. They've both been on the wrong side of public opinion and in some capacity are aware that they're in the crosshairs of someone incredibly dangerous. They can only try to keep each other safe by playing into the act that they've worked on for years.

So sure they have to hide their true feelings under a quirky guise, but also I think they would join a community theater and be so good at it. They're in musicals together, I think Phoenix can sing, and he can sing well. He was in all his school plays and got so good at projecting his voice that they didn't even need to give him a mic (me core). That's what made him so good at objecting. I think that the ace attorney stage plays should be canon in the aa universe and Phoenix should play himself and he gets Trucy to play Pearl. He accidentally has so much homoerotic tension with the guy who plays Edgeworth that the real Edgeworth gets jealous.

Phoenix should also know about a lot of technical stuff that comes with theater, so he does a lot of the setup for lights and audio for Trucy's magic shows, he helps her move props around and should be so involved because I think that would be fun.

I also think he should know enough magic that she sometimes incorporates him into the act around their friends, so she makes a card disappear and Phoenix pulls the same one out of Edgeworth's ear. I love it when they're concerningly in sync and they can basically read each other's minds. They stare at each other and have fully silent conversations.

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Checkmate Set!

This is the 3rd post in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Countdown: 78 days left until release!

Today's topic: the Special Edition aka the AAIC Checkmate Set! So excited! (And I love the name, fits perfectly to Miles' love for chess.) This was probably officially announced in Japan in some way (because it's Japan-exclusive, sadly) but I only learned of it today by happening upon a post about it. As announced in my initial post in this countdown I'm going to preorder this instantly (Japan import of course, I just need to find an online store that lists it and delivers internationally) but for now I'm gonna spend some time fangirling about the goodies you get with this Special Edition!

First we have this wonderful set of acrylic stands/figurines of 8 characters from both games! They're in the new chibi sprite artstyle which means I adore them already. I love figurines in general, especially if they're from two of my favourite games, especially if they look so pretty. The 8 characters chosen are Miles, Gumshoe, Kay, Franziska, Shi-Long, Gregory, Sebastian and Justine (fan translation names) - that pretty much covers all my most favourites from both games! I think the only character really missing would be Ray (fan translation name) but honestly, while I like him I've never been the biggest fan of him so I'm more than fine with this selection. They also picked nicely dynamic poses for each character which makes it look even better! And you get two different backdrops to put them in front of, Miles' office from I1-1 and the top of the Grand Tower from I2-4. I really have to think about how I'm gonna arrange them but I know it's going to look amazing!

The second extra is this Mini-Album CD with 5 additional newly arranged songs, so song arrangements you (as of right now) can't get any other way than this Special Edition. According to the Capcom website the titles of the songs are as follows:

Objections of Different Eras (which seems to be a remix of both Objection themes in one which sounds awesome)

Raven That Pursues the Truth (seems to be Kay's theme)

It's Time for Action! (seems to be Gumshoe's theme)

Howling Echoes (seems to be Shi-Long's theme)

Unveiling the Truth (seems to be either a Truth or Pursuit theme)

I'm really looking forward to hearing these new arrangements! The song selection sounds really promising. There's also the beautiful cover art! The CD itself has image cuts of Miles, Gumshoe, Kay and Shi-Long from the official Investigations Collection cover art which I love but the cover has entirely new artwork and it's amazing!

So many wonderful details! I love the composition idea, Miles is large in the background, drinking tea and seems to be contemplating his next move in a game of chess while all the others are in the new chibi sprite style and arranged on a chessboard - as if they were the actual pieces he was playing with! (I2 mastermind metaphor says hi!) And there's so much stuff going on! Kay seems to be dropping down from a height onto the board and Gumshoe watches her shocked; Patricia Roland points with her finger to them, maybe admonishing them (you can also barely see something large behind her, I think it's a book); behind them are Gregory and Ray (younger self) looking towards Miles or discussing something; in front of them is Shi-Long laughing and apparently talking to Shih-na who's mostly covered by the title; directly in front of Gumshoe is Missile sniffing at Buddy Faith's corpse (poor guy, he was probably a pawn who got sacrificed already 😅); going further to the right we have Oldbag in Pink Badger costume at the back looking longingly at Miles; Franziska and Justine in an aggressive discussion; Horace Knightley being mostly covered by the CD (there's probably some more going on there); Cammy Meele yawning; Shelly de Killer selling ice cream to the Steel Samurai holding the Iron Infant's hand (never thought I'd type that sentence 😂) and last but certainly not least 😉 there's Sebastian at the very front (de-beste spot?) reacting to something in a very Sebastian-like way. I would probably buy this CD for the artwork alone but the songs are great to have as well 😄

So happy that we even get a Special Edition with this collection! I know there's also been Japan-exclusive ones for the original DS games but this one's the first one I'll actually be able to get! I love these extras, they're amazing and I can't wait to have them!

Hello!! i am asking about your steel samurai headcanons!!

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH

ok so a lot of this is me maybe (definitely) projecting some of the AA stories into this double fictional franchise but MAN i just actually care about them so much. OK ANYWAYS here you go!

i know people love to hc that the Evil Magistrate and the Steel Samurai were friends before they were enemies, but i think they had never met before what we (as citizens of the AA universe who watch the show weekly) see in canon

i think they started as enemies, or at least as rivals. i also think that at first their relationship wasn't so overtly violent

they never really wanted to hate each other so much, but their core beliefs just clashed too much to allow the friendship they wanted

the Magistrate totally does get a redemption arc, but it's not until after the Pink Princess is introduced as a regular supporting character

also she was totally a regular supporting character before she got her own spinoff

PP and SS have a sibling dynamic very similar to Phoenix and Maya's. i wholeheartedly believe that PP is just as much of a sketchy "go with the flow" kind of character as Maya is

however, SS doesn't have nearly as much Tired Bitchy Single Father energy as Phoenix does. he's just as compassionate, though

SS and PP don't get married and have a kid together. i know it's canon in the stage show-- which isn't necessarily canon to the tv show, but i'm just going off of all SS canon/lore in general here-- that they do, but i am simply choosing to ignore it. i think they find the Iron Infant abandoned somewhere as a baby and decide to raise him together in the show

also, most fans are anti SS/PP marriage and basically nobody considers the stage show to be canon for this reason, but also because it COMPLETELY retcons the II's backstory because in the show he WAS just found abandoned and. nobody understands why this was changed in the stage show.

SS and EM had their big season finale epic battle and the Magistrate disappeared, presumed alive somewhere. he doesn't show up again until a few years after SS and PP starting raising II together

he's living in village somewhere peaceful as the local mysterious hermit, just trying to move on with his life and be better than he used to be. he doesn't want anything to do with SS anymore because he's scared of causing more damage

he has a super similar backstory to Miles re tragically lost parents preceded by adoption into a toxic and abusive household that molded him into something he didn't want to be. he never had a Phoenix or even a Larry or Franziska, though, he was just always alone

SS accidentally bumps into him on a seemingly filler episode fetch quest, probably on an errand for something for the II.

after some convincing, SS brings the no longer evil Magistrate back home with him and they along with PP and II all live relatively quiet and happy lives together

SS and M get to finally have the friendship they had always wanted

and then they fall in love, obviously

PP has a backdoor pilot ep where she decides she wants to find some independence and so she leaves SS, II, and M to go off and do her own thing

her antagonist as also a homoerotic narrative foil who also gets a redemption arc. there's a lot of recycled story in her show, but there's just enough new concepts and nuance to keep it interesting

that ep is pretty close to the SS series finale, which closes with SS, II, and M all living together

the Nickel Samurai picks up a few years later in the SS canon

the original SS characters don't show up at all until like halfway through s2 for some reason. no one quite understands why. they kept all the original cast though, except for Iron Infant who is now the Iron Adolescent. audiences think it's a stupid name, but production couldn't think of anything else that kept to double vowels.

surprisingly, the NS show actually doesn't recycle much story at all, it's almost entirely fresh narrative. he has no single antagonist for the first 2 seasons, and no love interest ever

i guess technically that girl from the local tea shop or whatever was a love interest, but NS eventually realizes that he was only interested in her to compete with his brothers. after defeating her father's gang, he leaves town to find himself

shenanigans ensue. eventually, he finds himself facing a large enough threat that he goes in search of the legendary hero Steel Samurai for help. that's how the original SS characters get reintroduced, and they all work together against this foe

except for PP. she drops in occasionally to help out and usually has her reformed Totally Not Girlfriend ex-antagonist with her, but she's just a recurring supportive character and not a regular in the NS. this is mostly for production reasons; because she has her own show, keeping track of continuity can be difficult.

even though Sal Manella mostly got away from the murder accomplice thing, accusations of repeated sexual harassment and other bigotry get him fired halfway through the first season of Pink Princess. fans rejoice. his career dies a shameful, sad, little death and he never makes anything of note again.

Maya begs Miles to prosecute against him when the harassment charges go to court. she doesn't need to, he was already on the case. Phoenix refuses to defend and they all have fun watching Manella get convicted.

WOW that wound up wayyyy longer than i expected LMAO. but uh yeah that's basically my hc for the basic plot stuff of the SS franchise. like, just plot stuff. that's not even most of more character oriented hcs please help i am too invested in this game fictional children's franchise.

I completely understand your confusion, but allow me to explain the situation regarding the Iron Infant.

While the stage play adaptation of the Steel Samurai leaves this detail out for time constraints, canonically speaking, the Iron Infant is not actually biologically related to either of them. The two of them happened upon him, abandoned at the doorstep of a temple. While both of them agreed to take turns looking after him, it is not indicative of the relationship between them being anything romantic. As a matter of fact, they literally comment on it in story by having the Steel Samurai openly deny having that sort of relationship with the Pink Princess, and in the manga adaptation of this scene, he elaborates that their "marriage" was merely a political move to prevent a war from breaking out between major clans. They are both in agreement that regardless of this, they are both free to love who they wish, and the Pink Princess even directly states that her heart already belongs to someone else... using gender neutral language when referring to this person, might I add.

On the other hand, during the Evil Magistrate's redemption, when he meets and has to take care of the Iron Infant while trying to rescue the Steel Samurai from the clutches of the nightmare bloom curse, the Iron Infant comments on how much he must love the Steel Samurai if he is willing to do so much to help him... leading to the Evil Magistrate getting flustered about this "love" without denying it, only to calm down immediately when he realizes the Iron Infant was not necessarily referring to romantic love.

Not to mention the reaction from both the Steel Samurai and the Evil Magistrate when the Iron Infant innocently remarks about how the Evil Magistrate could "finally tell him how he really felt about the Steel Samurai". Unlike when the topic of romantic love is raised between the Steel Samurai and Pink Princess, neither party attempts to correct him or qualify the statement as explicitly not a romantic connection.

Ironically, despite the perception that the arrangement has as the straightest thing either character has done, their marriage and adoption of a child is one of the bluntest instances of LGBTQ+ subtext in the entire series!

Ace Attorney 20th Anniversary Character Poll (and how to participate in it!)

Hey there. If you haven’t heard the news, Weekly Famitsu Magazine (a Japanese gaming magazine which has, historically, been where many new ace attorney games are announced) is going to have an article releasing on October 21st featuring Ace Attorney for the upcoming 20th Anniversary.

This is pretty decent news, I think, though we don’t know yet if there’s going to be a new game announcement or any other sort of news. What is confirmed is that they’re going to run a fan poll where you can vote on your favorite characters, cases, and Payne hairstyles, among other things.

This does not ask for personal information, and as far as I can tell, you don’t need to be in Japan to respond. The poll is, however, solely in Japanese, and I assume they’re expecting answers in Japanese as well. I took the liberty with the help of google translate to attempt to make a rough translation of the poll, and you can follow along with this and fill it out yourself if you wish! Keep in mind this may not necessarily be extremely accurate, because google translate, and if anyone knows better than I do, please do correct me!

The poll closes September 30th 2021 11:59 PM Japan time - so there’s not a lot of time to fill it out!

Since that is a LOT to navigate, use the Japanese to help you. The games are laid out pretty simply: if you know the game and case, you can find it pretty quickly. It goes mainline -> Investigations -> TGAA -> PLvsAA. Mainline Ace Attorney games are 逆転裁判 followed by a number corresponding to which entry it is, with the exception of the first game (which is first on the list anyways). Investigations games start with 逆転検事 and followed with a 2 for investigations 2. Great Ace Attorney starts with  大逆転裁判 with a 2 for Resolve, and Layton vs Ace Attorney is  レイトン教授 VS 逆転裁判. After the game title you can find the case number.

For some reason, Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice’s DLC cases don’t seem to be on this list. Sorry if those are your favorites. Maybe yell in the free response box about that.

Steel samurai facts because why not

The Steel Samurai is a himbo

The Nickel Samurai doesn't respect women.

This was most likely going to be a part of character development in a planned crossover episode with the Pink Princess.

The evil magistrate is a complex character that has done wrong in the past but has shown signs of deep regret over his actions and is as flawed as you or i

The Steel Samurai was canceled after episode 13 due to controversy surrounding the murder of Jack Hammer, actor for the Evil Magistrate.

The Pink Princess is referred to as Season 2.

The Pink Princess was hella gay-coded.

The pink princess gets consistently underestimated for being feminine

Signal Samurai characters and their family are consistently appearing throughout the shows.

Pink x Steel is a good pairing even though Steel x Magistrate and Masked Princess is also good.

Pink is a good character and if you say otherwise fuck off

Rivalry.

Rivalry everywhere.

Season 3 introduced the Samurai Brothers, Nickel, Tin, and Aluminum.

Nickel and Tin were in mortal danger during Tornado Slash and Aluminum caused a lot of it.

Tin Stans are a wierd group

We don’t talk about Nickel Myth.

Steel Samurai and Nickel Samurai don’t have a good relationship.

Tin has zero character development, primarily because he gets filler arcs more than story arcs.

This causes a lot of people to not really care for the character.

Strawberry Clan was pretty long.

That arc introduced Sayo, the Masked Myth.

A summary of Strawberry Clan:

The leader of Strawberry Clan is Sayo’s father, whose goal is to kill off the Samurai Brothers.

He managed to get Nickel Samurai to fall in love with Sayo, but she hasn’t been shown to fully reciprocate those feelings.

Mister Ichigo sets up several traps for the Brothers to kill them, but Sayo, who was originally evil, begins her redemption after Tornado Slash, feeding information about the traps to the brothers under the guise of the Masked Myth.

After Sayo is revealed to be “evil”, Nickel blows up at her, as she can’t expose herself as the Masked Myth.

The Masked Myth still remains a presence, but the Strawberry Clan never fully goes away, and she still can’t reveal her identity.

Myth and Princess get a few episodes together, as well as most of the Shogun White arc.

This results in a lot of people shipping Sayo and Yumiko (the pink princess).

Unfortunately, season 3 ends before Yumiko finds out about Sayo’s identity, and there was a long drought before season 4.

The Iron Infant stage play IS NOT CANON. Otherwise, it simply wouldn’t be consistent with ages, as Pink is around the same age as the Samurai Brothers, who are around 10 years younger than Steel and see him as a father.

Oooor at least Alu and Tin do. Nickel sees him as a weak little pussy.

Season 4 introduces gold and Zinc samurai, as well as the Ironsmith, previously known as the Iron Infant.

This takes place a while before Season 3, and while it does involve the Strawberry Clan, they’re a lot less of a presence.

It also features child versions of the Brothers.

Jammin Ninja is one of the main characters who appears in both, being both Nickel’s rival and appeared in a season 4 arc.

Jammin’ Ninja’s identity was a mystery for a really long time, until the reveal that he was actually Hiroshi from the first arc, a childhood friend of the Brothers.

He was thought to be killed by the Evil Magistrate, but it turns out Hiroshi was brainwashed by Emperor Strawberry and ended up killing the evil magistrate for betrayal of the crown.

Wham episodes:

Season 3 episode 11 “Pinky Promise”

Season 3 episode 34 “Behind the Mask”

Season 4 episode 13 “Emperor Strawberry″

Crimson Warrior’s a chaotic force who really doesn’t give a shit. He gives up revenge for two tacos in season 2, and accidentally took credit for saving Gold in Season 4.

Crimson will fuck you up though.

Basic plotlines:

Season 1. Steel and Evil fight, Evil dies in episode 12. He reappears in season 4, when we get a better look into the Strawberry Empire and discover Magistrates are actually replaceable. They get “uploaded” into captured people, and that’s what happened to Hiroshi. the “Ninja” Hiroshi is a personality uploaded into Hiroshi in Episode 13, astonishingly graphically.

He doesn’t actually ever come back,  But that Ninja eventually decides to protect the Brothers of his own volition, and is killed by the Strawberry Clan after his mask comes off in episode 34 season 3.

Would you like to share your Steel Samurai headcanons? At least one person would enjoy reading them!

At the moment it’s mostly just some stuff to do with how many seasons there are and the timing (which makes all this obviously non-canon from the first glance), which are as follows:

Steel Samurai: ran for seven seasons, Power’s trial happened during what was meant to be the filming of the 8th (2008-2016)

Pink Princess sequel series (2016-17)

Nickel Samurai failure (2018)

Pink Princess prequel series DISASTER (2019-2020)

hiatus for a bit

Iron Infant: The Tempering (2022), lead role by John Marsh (now 16), Will Powers in more background role as Steel Samurai, coming-of-age story

Beyond that it’s mostly bits and pieces that have been created for my fic Saturation, which are as follows:

Season 3 of the show mixed things up a bit by moving the location around every few episodes as the Steel Samurai and Pink Princess pursed the Evil Magistrate across Neo Olde Japan. This was the season that revealed that other cities beyond Neo Olde Tokyo have their own defenders, including the Silver Swordsman, protector of Neo Olde Osaka (only around for a few episodes, he’s a fan favorite and returned as a reoccurring background character in season 7).

In season 6 the series began to explore some of the more mystical/spiritual elements of the Neo Olde world, a topic previously touched on only lightly in the show and mostly explored in supplementary material, including source books and novelizations/graphic novelizations

There are multiple ‘Samurai paths’ within the series, similar to how there are different styles of kung fu, these ones based upon the Asian elements of Earth, Wood, Fire, Water, and Metal.

The Steel Samurai follows the Metal path, naturally

The Pink Princess follows the Wood path, which is slightly more mystical

While the Steel Samurai and Pink Princess both have non-powered forms, due to Will Powers’s reluctance to show his face on camera, the Steel Samurai’s face has never been revealed in any format - it is always cast in shadow or off-frame or somehow obscured

There are so many fan theories around this - most people are unaware of Will’s stance on the issue

The Pink Princess’s non-powered form is actually bald. This was not part of her original character design, but, a few weeks before they were set to begin filming, a friend of the actress playing Pink Princess began chemo, and the actress shaved her head out of solidarity and support, didn’t even warn anyone, just feckin’ risked her job and shaved it. She figured she’d either get fired or have to wear a wig.

In a shocking twist, instead of doing either, the director just decided to roll with it, they reworked her costume design a bit, and it’s become one of the Pink Princess’s signature characterizations that she is bald by choice.

There are ninjas in the Steel Samurai world, they mostly don’t get along with the samurai

Samurai in this series will work with mystics, priestesses, and the like, but tend to be a bit suspicious of mystical arts outside those included in the Samurai paths

Due to preferring not to show his face, it’s actually almost impossible to get an autograph off of Will Powers simply because he doesn’t really go to conventions or signing sessions and stuff - you basically have to luck out and run into him in person and be carrying something he can sign

Some of the more intense fans have an autograph card and a pen with them at all times they’re in areas he’s supposed to have been in, Just In Case

While the original show is live-action, there have been both a cartoon and an anime remake, each putting a slightly different spin on various events and characters

In a wild twist, they came out the same year. The fans went insane.

And that’s all I really have at the moment! Like I said, this is all just background stuff to have characters who mutually enjoy the show, like Edgeworth and Maya, discuss. Most up it’ll probably be showing up at some point or another in Saturation, along with other stuff as I think of it. Anyway, thanks for asking!

Maya then gets in an argument about how the Steel Samurai is actually gay for the evil magistrate but unable to admit it because his former friend is now evil and Penny is frantically texting Will Powers so Maya just keeps the debate going because she has AMMO for this actually because the Iron Infant is adopted and the Steel Samurai and Pink Princess are friends so they're co parenting and the original person is now sorry they asked and then Penny holds up her phone and is like "yeah I literally just texted Will fucking Powers and he says the pink princess is a trans lesbian"

And the person who doubted them is just like "but he's just the actor in the suit? What about the director????"

And Maya and Penny laugh and Penny's just likw "buddy, sal wouldn't know gay subtext if it slapped him in the face. Which I've wanted to do. Several times."
