i keep seeing takes on either side of this and i don’t disagree with any of them because the whole point is that We’ll Never Know and it really could go either way BUT! i do think it’s like. important that the way that kendall differs the MOST from logan is his relationship with his siblings and the love he has for them/needs from them. kendall thinks he’s only built to run waystar but really he’s built to be part of a trio!! he’s a love sponge, they’re all love sponges!!! the three of them are bound together in a way that logan and ewan never were bc logan is the big evil and the big love that built them! not to mention the fact that roman and shiv are not ewan. shiv will probably hold out longest because her pride and her rage and her exhaustion is what brought them to this point but. roman is blowing up kendall’s phone 48 hours later MAX. kendall is getting invites via roman to family events he wasn’t invited to and bringing squiggle beats to his nephew’s christening…. shiv is calling ken to leave five minute voicemails about how pathetic he is and how she beat him…

I may be reading into it but like, there are posts going on about them being Asexual, and while I’m 100% for that if that’s your headcanon, I think it’s because of something else.

Children’s toys don’t have ‘private parts’.

Sure barbie dolls have ‘boobs’ which are just plastic curves let’s not lie but they aren’t detailed! Between their legs is literally just smooth plastic!

And yeah yeah I hear the “But some kids would know what sex is” and I raise you this!

Shut the fuck up. They shouldn’t have to know, nor should they think that’s the only thing gf/bf’s do.

A child wouldn’t know what ‘girlfriend/boyfriend’s do when they stay over at each others houses, but they probably heard that exact phrase at some point, whether it’s from their sibling, a parent, or tv!

So Ken literally just wants to spend time with Barbie.

And I do see that as Asexual in a sense, but I also have a logical part of my brain screaming “MOST BARBIES/CHILDREN DON’T KNOW WHAT SEX IS, SO THATS LITERALLY NOT ON THE TABLE FOR THEM!”

customer and I talked abt the Barbie movie and she said she interpreted that Barbie had thoughts of death “on purpose, because she hated her life and wanted to be with Ken desperately but she was unsatisfied with nobody in BarbieLand having genitals” and “the reason why she didn’t love Ken was because they didn’t have sex everyday”. and THEN she told me the reason why she went to the gynecologist was to “acquire a vagina” and she was so serious. Her rant was like 15 minutes about Barbie becoming a human solely for sex??? Then she asked what I thought of the movie and asked if I agreed with her.

But I had to take a moment to process all of that before gently telling her the exact opposite of everything she said

it’s the way Ryan Gosling plays Ken’s feelings for Barbie for me. because the feelings are unreal and fake in the way of a doll but they’re also intensely real in the way of his actual personality/who he actually is.

#it’s the way he looks at her sometimes when she isn’t looking at him #and it’s just full of intense longing and vulnerability #so it’s that combination that I love SO much #which is over-the-top cartoonish-ness that’s full of PERSONALITY and excess and conviction #and then this core of -well I already said it but INTENSE vulnerability #it’s Michael Scott in love with Holly. It’s Schmidt in love with Cece #and the way Ryan plays it is even more so because he’s a doll and of course in a real way his love for her is not a real thing #BUT IN AN EVEN REALER WAY——#To paraphrase Michael Scott (!!!!!)#it’s the realest thing anyone in Barbieland has ever known (to paraphrase Taylor)!#like he’s the only one trying to do anything real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#and so for me my Barbie takes are all secondhand #because the story they’re telling has some narrative cracks and weaknesses in it #but also I kind of don’t care because they’re not focusing on the story that is the most interesting to me personally #which is this hilarious icon of a cartoon man who is—somewhere in the depths of his little plastic Ken heart—really in love #and I know it seems like I’m just repeating and twisting what the movie DOES say. that he’s in love but it’s fake and he has to get over it #to be his own person #but that’s only the one layer for me!!!!!!#and it’s a true one. I actually love his existential crisis and the moment where he’s forced to be his own person (doll)#and that’s the best thing Barbie could do for him in that moment #but it only addresses part of the situation —the part of his feelings that are fake. it doesn’t actually see or do anything #with the real love that’s also somehow by the magic of personality there #And it pretends it isn’t. BUT IT IS ALSKKSKSJEJJE #like I’m SORRY but he is just an absolute magnet for her and he’s so deeply responsive to her presence underneath all of the exaggeration #it’s in his eyes it’s in his voice!!!!! like. Sorry I know love when I see it akskksksksksjsj #and yeah that love is very decidedly not in her character and at this stage that made sense for it not to be #because of her journey to humanity etc. but I wanted them to do something with that real love in Ken and they don’t even see it #which is OKAY because tbh I’m mostly just delighted that it’s THERE #but yeah. That’s the most interesting part of the movie to me #how could it not be

just watched Oppenheimer, all I have to say is that Cillian Murphy better get that oscar next year and that this might be one of my favourite movies of 2023.

Now in this comparative essay I will—

#i wasted 2 good hours (when i could’ve been sleeping) reading this and i?????#spoilers for this in the tags from here on out bc i need to liveblog my life&crisis ok—#the intro/prologue thing is basically just setting up the fantasy world thing of the play (as seen in the non-concert parts of the mv)#the fantasy world part seems to be in yujiro’s pov and the real world parts seem to be in aizo’s pov… for now at least.#they don’t alternate povs with the ‘one’ and ‘two’ dividers like in the previous lxl novels… for now at least #anyway chapter 1 opens with aizo finishing up his job stuff and meeting with yui for ramen #yui is pimpin’ as always #and ft4 is apparently not an idol group. but that’s a crisis from earlier so nvm that #they get to the ramen place where yui orders them super spicy ramen and goes ‘dw bby eating spicy food will help you get better at singing’#which is a blatant lie btw ಠ‿ಠ and aizo knows it #and then a weird flashback sequence occurs when aizo’s like ‘teach me how to skateboard brooo’#in which it’s revealed that ken???? simpbasaki ken???? is good at sports????????#anyways they split up from the ramen place and yui immediately hops on the phone to plan a dinner date with rio #aizo sees it and is like ‘ft4 really get along huh’… then he’s ambushed from behind by hotaru #cue lxl dogwalking date thing where they talk about yujiro’s life ig #then cut to the part where tamura tells them that they’re gonna be in a musical #they leave with the scripts and go to kodai’s cafe. they end up fighting and almost get kicked out #they return to the office and the staff be like ‘omg you guys fought again didn’t you?’. they’re too obvious man #anyway they both accept the musical casting offer in unison，go ‘stop copying me!!!’ and all that dumb childish nonsense #then aizo thinks about how ft4 and their dance-vocal unit-starring idol senpai (kazuma and mifuyu) get along well…#…and wonders ‘how long will we (him and yujiro) be like this?’#or maybe he wondered it first and then thought about his gay af performer senpai lineup later idk. it’s 3am i can’t rem and i wanna sleep #anyway that’s where we return to the fantasy world and yujiro’s pov where he and fantasy-aizo (who isn’t explicitly named yet i think)…#…and of course even *they* are fighting too.#but in any case it seems like this novel’s gonna be about lxl’s ✨bonds✨ esp with the focus on how ‘well’ ft4 (and mifuyu+kazuma) get along—#pls!!!! be a bl novel!!!!!!! i’m begging!!!!!!!!!!!!!#inedible blubbering #life&crisis foreverrrrr~#<-that’s gonna be my tag for this novel idk as i said it’s ✨3am✨—
