Say what you will about Van Helsing 2004; hate it, love it, be indifferent, But the All-Hallow's masquerade ball went sooooo hard and it had zero right to do so! It's a fun, campy, monster mash movie with wonderfully dated ( and expensive) cgi and non-stop action meant to be a popcorn flick one takes out to watch around spooky season. And it has this* chef's kiss* GORGEOUS 6 minute sequence plopped arbitrarily in the second act, which unexpectedly surpasses nearly every other ball in the last 30+ years of film( notable exception being the Cinderella 2015 ball) for literally no reason other than to be dramatic af.

Like feast your eyes on this Gothic masterpiece!!! Who doesn't want to immediately live in this picture?!??

They used those candles with oil in them so that they would have real candles, real string orchestra( I believe), probably around 100 real life extras( something which is tragically absent in modern film), said extras are all in beautiful fully decked-out costumes( which are in luxuriously dark colours, but nearly no fully black, another thing you cannot say for much modern cinema), REAL CIRQUE DU SOLEIL PERFORMERS for all the acrobatics!!!! Hell, instead of filming in a sound stage, where they could control the reverb and the acoustics and the size of the set and the bloody lighting ( they apparently had a heck of a time emulating the firelight for this sequence) and the temperature( it's very cold in stone churches!) better, they filmed in a Baroque church in Prague! As I said, peak dramatic splendour, jfc...

Think about that a second...They filmed a vampire masquerade in a Baroque Catholic Church( St. Nicholas' in Lesser Town, if you were curious) with amazing over-the-top acoustics and marble statues and real, tiled floors and marble pillars and a choir loft which they very much utilized, covered the pipe organ and the altar with a grand brocade curtain so it wouldn't be so obviously a, you know, a church! And there's a gold gilt elevated and canopied pulpit into which they put two vampire kiddies for, again, the sake of being dramatic.

And the costumes! They remind me of the 25th anniversary Phantom of the Opera Masquerade costumes. Same quality, like they're old, well-cared-for costumes pulled out of a warehouse, instead of fast industry churn-outs. With lots of trim and colour and masks and lace and feathers and..just...ugh.. they are all perfect! Just look at all the head pieces on the ladies and the hats on all the gentleman ( save Dracula of course) and the powdered wigs on the musicians. ANNNNDD! The dresses are historically correct!!!!!! It's the 80's bustle era! Nobody does the 80's bustle era in film anymore and it's a bummer. Oh and one other thing! Anna's ( and other women's) hair, at least here in the ball, is also historically accurate because it's all pinned up! None of those fucken modern beachwaves at a ball! Everybody's got updo's!

Gah, I swear, Dracula in his gold cloak really does things to me in this scene!

By the way, the acrobatics are bonkers in here for just background stuff!! Especially the random guys on unicycles and the dude playing the violin whilst standing on a ball...Like....WHAT?

Anyways, all this to say, that this masquerade ball feels sooo real and tangible and because of that it blows every other film out of the water, and no, I will not change my mind!!!!!

I am so bloody excited and here's why!!!

This plot is going to be so gorgeous!

Season 2 is all about the reversal, the opposite of what we've seen in season 1, and ofmd is so incredibly character-driven. Even more specifically, the plot is driven the most (almost entirely) by Stede, Ed and Izzy.

The story is so driven by the three of them, they are linked together, for better or for worse, right from the start.

What happens in season 1?

Stede is running away from his life and he stumbles into Ed's. Throughout the season there are hints of his issues with fear, and then the big one happens: he's confronted with his greatest fear, aka ruining everything, and he runs away again. His biggest problem is his fear.

Ed is unhappy with his life, waiting to drown (hellooooo, season 2 metaphors), he's a Peter Pan-level lost boy. He doesn't know who he is. When Stede doesn't meet him on that dock he becomes convinced he's unlovable and becomes completely lost. Why? Because his greatest fear was confirmed.

Izzy's life is disrupted by Stede, he becomes Stede's antagonist. He's angry, he's jealous, he clings to the only life he's known to keep him and Ed safe, aka violence and unkindness. He becomes a catalyst for problems. Why? Because he's scared.

These three characters are all so scared and in such different ways that it creates an absolute maelstorm of a plot, and it's breathtakingly brilliant.

Now, season 2 is all about the reversal: of fortunes, motivations, lives, everything.

Stede is no longer scared and no longer running: he's in love with Ed, he knows he's in love. He becomes unstoppable. Now he'll go on without fear. (He lifts the covering off "dead" Ed's face, unafraid to see what he finds there.) He's going to show Ed how much he loves him, and he's no longer scared of ruining Ed. More than that, he accepts that he's hurt Ed, and that doesn't frighten him away from facing him. (Stede is also ahead of Ed and Izzy on this journey, because Stede is in charge of the narrative, and that's so gorgeous.)

Ed is now finding himself. He tries to find himself in the grotesque Blackbeard persona, but of course he's wrong, poor thing. He's spiralling, more and more lost. First change: Ed chooses life, he stops drowning (Stede as a source of light again, btw, sjldfhsjdf). Ed's journey now is about finding himself, deciding who he wants to be, and also to let go of his own fears. He'll be finding himself and accepting love and being brave enough to express love.

And Izzy! Izzy, in his own reversal, becomes a catalyst for solutions and a unifier, where he was once a divider. He stands up to Ed (and he chooses life too, jfc, he shot that torch out of Ed's hand in the middle of a storm, don't tell me he missed when aiming at his own head, the whole message of ofmd is choosing life!), and he reaches out to Stede, wants to mend things. He'll be teaching Stede how to be a pirate, he'll be helping. He will be letting go of his anger, which also stemmed from fear.

These three scared characters are now actively choosing to not be afraid any more, and they're choosing life. And this is how they'll drive the plot this time.

This is so, so incredible and beautiful, and I absolutely love it.

And it's not upending the order. No, no, that's what the first season was about. This? This is about putting things right.

Our queueing experience was pretty chill since we ( @zadig-fate , @mogoce-nocoj, and @sloveniansexual) wanted balcony so it wasn't quite so bad

we feared we might get kicked out of the balcony spot but didn't (apparently it was the designated disabled spot but not actually marked as such)

really good view of the entire stage, I'll yeet my videos onto YouTube at the end of the month (once I have wifi again)

the ground was sloped, I think, so there were no "bad" spots

he lost the glasses during Tokio (intentionally this time – threw them at Kiki) and the sweater a little later

Nace joined part of the front row in doing the Macarena dance for a moment

Jan instigated the crab walk across the stage, and when they came back to Primož, Primož grabbed Nace's fretboard (? The thing with the pegs) before Jan came around and got to press a few buttons on the sound mixing desk

Bojan was helped back on stage but they forgot Vita in the crowd. She was still solidly in the crowd when Kiki fucked back off. I think @braveheart1418 yelled for people to make space and so she was able to slip back out, but yeah. Poor Vita

Kris interacted so much with Jan and Nace though it was pretty tame

so I finally got done watching S5 of The Dragon Prince and ghgnghghggngh why do I have such a mixed bag love hate relationship with this show (spoilers)

I want to love this show but there's so many things that just don't land and don't work, and yet here I am, hooked once again, because after 8 episodes of cringe humor and weird dialogue it fed me some crumbs of delicious Aaravos content.

I find so many of the accents so goddamn stilted and awkward. The french sun fire elves are the worst. I don't object to french-sounding elves in principle but dear lord does it sound unnatural and strained

SO much of the humor just does not land and the pacing of individual scenes is just ??? ATLA had some very kiddie humor here or there too, and I love the somewhat darker and more mature tone of TDP but jfc it feels like they need to hammer every joke home with so much time that you'd think they were planning for a laugh track

ep 8 and 9 were so much better than the whole rest of the season because once this show lets itself focus on action and drama, it's actually pretty fucking good, but for some reason you need to get through a first half season of awkward goofs.

Terry annoys me so much. Yay trans rep, but why the utterly random coming out out of nowhere (that was S04 I know but I watched it very recently okay) and his whole sounding like a therapist shit towards Claudia, like yes, it could be funny that this random wood elf does aroma therapy on his dark mage gf but everything somehow turns awkward in the execution

The library showdown was generally cool but the framing for why Amaya told them to leave without her was so fucking weird: you have this moment of Dragon Ex Machina, Zubeia wiping away the demon bears with ease, and then suddenly when Amaya is back in the frey after grabbing Bait, they're suddenly out of time and need to leave that instant??? Like I see what they were going for, obviously Zubeia was under real threat from the demon bears, but imo the framing/visualization of that threat did not work at all and I audibly went "WHY" at my screen at the random "you have to leave without me" thing.

That being said there's some shit that goes extremely hard and I'm here for it:

Rayla just fucking dismembering Claudia apparently wtf??

I enjoyed the sexy fish pirate man, I hope he survived getting eaten

I am an utter addict for Aaravos' voice and even the flashback repetitions in Janai's nightmares were legit enough to get my attention again

I am very excited for how someone is going to end up saving Viren's life against his will and I will gladly read fanfic of it

I had the 'our child' thing spoiled by being careless on tumblr but seeing it actually on screen was better than expected, love that for my OTP, toxic af parenthood is just what they needed

I really expected there to be more Aaravos since this show got renamed to Mystery of Aaravos false advertising smh.

They got creative with Dragon designs this season and I support that

out of all the things I found weird and cringe, I am 100% here for Zubaia getting randomly healed by a funky little gnome that calls himself the mushroom mage, 10/10 no notes

There is so much I deeply, deeply appreciate about what this show tries to do, as a high fantasy kids show with an overarching story, gorgeous visuals and explicit lgbtq and disability rep that I feel like an ass for complaining about it so much, but god damn there are so many things that are just unbearably cringe about it and OH MY GOD I just remembered the god damn "maybe you should express your love like a bee, here just move your tushy like that" scene holy FUCK can someone please give me an edit of this show with about three times the Aaravos screentime and all this second hand embarassment removed

Just the physical representation of Chris above him--bigger and taller and in control--makes Sebastian shiver. He wants that power dynamic outlined even more. Please. He presses hard into Chris' knee.

Seb makes a noise of complaint. He fucking knows what.

He knows what he started.

Chris sighs happily, "get up here then, sweet boy," and Seb does.

Sebastian clambers into Chris' lap and Chris instantly has his hands all over him. Back on his throat. Around his waist, groping him so good. Sebastian’s eyes flutter shut, leaning into the heat and claiming brand of Chris' large hand over his throat. He just melts into Chris' touch. Yesss.

Chris squeezes his neck, just a touch, as he claims Seb's mouth, kissing him deeply. Seb swears he can hear an angel's chorus welcoming him as he starts to really fly under Chris' care 🥴 A religious experience. Floating on simmering arousal and golden fog, all about to get more intense.

Also, don't fucking get me started on this other sub Seb moment from Sharper. It's still frying my brain 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 and making me think about "The Love Song You've Earned" by @luninosity because I can totally see that more traditional dom/sub dynamic flowing into Seb being ordered to take Chris' shoes off for him 👀

Can you IMAGINE how heavy that hand on Kaz's shoulder feels? Ahhh.

I'm not really sure if Kaz pushing him like that is in character for Kaz. Sure, he's like that most of the time. But the only thing that Jesper intends to keep for himself, and Kaz NEEDING to see how Jesper turns that coin into a key? That's... not something I feel he'd do? I should definitely reread CK. I don't remember Kaz pushing Jesper like that. I understand they might need it for the sake of the show, but... I don't feel good about this. Kaz usually notices and keeps it to himself. Like when he sent Jesper and Wylan to a mental asylum, knowing Wylan's mom is alive, letting Wylan experience it at his own pace and grief through that moment. I'm very conflicted about this. I obviously like Kazper visuals, but not all of them are exactly good. We'll see.

That scene between Darkling and Alina... jfc, they're suffocating and pompous. I genuinely don't know if I dislike them in the show or in the books more. Both are bad lol.

The Menagerie... I am VERY cautious about how they'll portray that one. That storyline bothers me A LOT.

I decided to go with your wonderful, feel-good recent Mpreg fic which explores the trope in such a lovely and comforting way it made my heart ache. I know many people are picky about this trope (myself included) and because of that some works don’t get a lot of exposure until they get recced so here I am to give it a special shout-out as one of my favorite reads of 2022 so far! Pretty much like Em, I have the biggest soft spot for tender established relationship and this Everybody Lives AU with Wolfstar + Drarry has perfect joyful, found family vibes, it put a big smile on my face from beginning to end!

Remus and Sirius are both charming and bigger than life - I love their energy, how they balance each other, and it’s quite emotional to see how their fatherly dynamics with Harry and Draco could look like. The idea that Remus’ super wolf hearing makes him the bearer of good news is so clever and sweet! In fact I adore many things this fic comes up with: Drarry’s mental bond, pregnant & horny Draco (also: “kissed him, a proprietary hand still on Draco's stomach” is now my new favourite line, jfc 🔥), and Sirius’ workshop!!! What a brilliant idea to have him partner up with Arthur to tinker around, I can’t believe I’ve never seen this take before. Em has a fabulous grasp of Sirius’ young spirit and child-like enthusiasm without making him inadequate, it’s so fun to read and I love the affectionate nicknames he has for everyone!

This fic is nice and heartwarming just the way we need it on bad days, with zero drama, just soft, happy ending vibes and I love that for us. Get ready to laugh and swoon over these soon-to-be-parents boys and have fun with their slightly chaotic dynamics as the family grows. When the Angels Left the Old Country

I haven't touched it in a hot sec, but its a queer, historical fantasy ya book based in jewish folklorex about an angel and a demon that leave europe, after a girl goes missing from the village they've set up shop in. It's very light and whimsical which is not my usual fare, but I'm enjoying it! Its very heartfelt and the two main leads have very good chemistry. And its always cool to see angel/demon lore outside the usual christian sphere.

For manga: steel ball run (part 7 of jojos bizarre adventure) its. A story about a cross continental horse race to find the body parts of jesus. Which is the most coherent way i can put it. Im rereading it w two of my friends rn and im enjoying it! It isnt my favorite part, but its up there, and features some of the best stuff in the series. This is. Also a story featuring a pair of ride or die protagonists with a very strong dynamic and chemistry (honestly, best 'set' of protags in the series) and so much comes from their bond. Its at the point in the series where it started getting a monthly release and it shows, w some rlly gorgeous art. Gyro and Diego are highlights artwise because the former doesnt have a stand he just. Has these steel balls he spins and throws around, so you get very dynamic shots of him just. Chucking them that the author uses in super creative ways to lead the eye and compose panels and the latter. Can turn himself and other things into dinosaurs. Have you ever seen a dinosaur ride a horse? Its fucking sick. It also has some interesting themes of american imperialism and christianity, of all things, which i think are done, well in some respects, esp given the authors track record. IT ALSO HAS SOME OF THE WORST STUFF IN THE SERIES THAT MAKES ME WANT TO KILL HIM W HAMMERS.

Jfc jojos bizarre adventure is holding me at gunpoint. Its not good its not bad (besides when it is) it its own tier of media. I forgot how much 15 year old me was obsessed w it and so i foolishly rewatched it thinking id be. Normal. I was wrong. God. I've never seen anything like it! It's so clearly a passion project from someone who's very eccentric and so it goes from absurd and stupid and comedic to circling right back to being very human and poignant. Like, it's about love! And familial trauma! And prevailing in the face of great tragedy! And also killing the president because jesus told you so! It's got a myriad of flaws from technical writing issues to genuinely tasteless/bigoted content, so its not some untouchable media, but ive been enjoying it a lot.

Part 5 and 8 are my favorites for very different reasons.

Part 5, Golden Wind, is abt a bunch of weird mobsters on a roadtrip through italy to kill their boss. It has a very charming supporting cast who are a sort of found family of societal rejects, brought together by this guy named Bruno who acts as a leader + mentor + sort of dad? To them. They're all surprisingly fleshed out characters, esp for this early on in the series, and their group dynamic, combined w some of the best fights in the entire show, really sell this part. The main character and main villain are. Not good. Sans a few aspects. Tho. Like i forget giorno is there half the time. (Giorno is my beloved stale cracker of a character but hes MY stale cracke, tho)

Part 8, Jojolion, is uh. Hm. It follows this amnesiac dude who wakes up in the dirt, as he tries to piece together the person he was. It's set in an au version of the town from part 4, w some characters being spins on old ones. Its the most recent part, and it shows. Its a lot better structured, paced, and developed compared to earlier parts. The mystery running through it has a lot of fun twists and turns, the themes are coherent, and the pace is slow, but not meandering. The supporting cast is fun (the lead's romantic interest is an actually decent jojo woman and they have a very cute relationship, and the family the main character is sort of adopted into are all fucking insane) but the real draw for me was the main character. Josuke (the second. Theres another josuke from an alternate universe in part 4, anyway) is probably my favorite jojo. I could go on about him, but compared to the others, he feels the most real? Theres this very grounded sense of frustration abt him as he tries and fails to piece together who he is, while everyone around him seems to have somethimg they need from him, or an idea of who he SHOULD be. He isnt a hero, he isnt even all that noble, hes just trying to find himself and if anyone out there loves him. He's blunt, one track minded, and is doing the jojo equivalent of spamming x to skip through all the dialogue bc hes not here for anyones shit beside his own. Jojolion somehow captures the feeling of being a weird, displaced pseudo adult trying to piece yourself together, while everything Keeps Fucking Happening. I love it so much. But by god does the ending suck hoooooly shit oh my god dude jesus christ. Fucking. I hate tohru i hate tohru i hate tohru fjcjendnxzlzm. Anyway jobin sweep

Im currently running a csm tabletop n curse of strahd game, and am in a ravenloft game. They're all very different but i love them all.

Ravenloft game is a sort of sequel to the curse of strahd game i was in a while bsck

I play pageturn (kenku paladin) and coda (changeling flavored as fallen angel, bard). Ones a 13 year old w a kill drive going through a double crisis of faith while somehow being the heart of the group and the others a shapeshifting corrupted celestial, whos trying to find themself. we are currently exploring the fomain the latter was imprisoned in and have found the eye of vecna and. I am. Excited and concerned for what our wonderful dm has cooked up.

Chainsaw Man game is a high stakes office drama following the worst group of devil hunters youve ever seen. Its more episodic and light than my other games which is a nice change of pace, and i rlly like the energy our group brings to the table. I am always horrified and surprised by whatever new government supplied human rights violation they commit next! Every character is uniquely sad, while still maintaining the token csm dark comedy abt them. We are currently revisiting a mystery allll the way back from our first session and im stoked for some stuff i have planned.

Sippy Crew (curse of strahd game) is drawing to a close and ahh i could make a whole post abt how much these guys mean to me. Its been a joy dming for this group of freaks and watching as they come together not into a found family, but a group of distinctly doomed, but fiercely loyal individuals. They've had two pc deaths, even more close calls, and have lost so much, but they're pushing through like dandelions in concrete. Its genuinely the most emotionally invested ive been in a ttrpg, and am so excited, to see their journey come to a close, and will miss them dearly.

Both jojo and ttrrpgs have been a way to reconnect with friends i dont usually talk to as much, and strengthen the bonds of the friends that i do, which is why theyve hit so hard, haha.

i just feel like i am going insane. i have been messing with monitor settings all day because everything is different from my mac's display to when i hook it up to either of my external monitors. and i feel absolutely insane because it's making me paranoid about any settings i have in photoshop because i don't know if anything is actually good anymore.

looks too sharp and noisy on monitor A, but on monitor B is crisp quality gorgeous. then monitor 3 is this weird like other so i am just not worrying about it. and i feel like i am going fucking nuts what the fuck why can't they just be the same fucking thing across the board when they're the same resolution

am i making sense here?? doubtful. but fuck i am so tired at this point and can feel my optical migraine creeping back in and i was supposed to do so much else today jfc

Paul is making me tear up, and I'm loving his storyline, I hope we explore it more later on (and I still hope he and Asha can work through it and will get together, he seemed so excited and happy before she pulled out the yearbook, and he deserves some happiness)

I know Grace is right about this whole situation with Melody but damn if it's not enterianing to see Tommy feud with a kid 😂

but their moment after Melody got her period was sweet, I liked that

okay, I love Owen being there for the team - Marjan in 4x05 and now for Paul, it's just so nice to see him actually have good relationships with them, and interact with them aside from emergencies (bc a lot of the time his storylines involve him alone and it's annoying lol)

this was a sweet episode and the ending was wholesome, and it might've been the first episode this season when I wasn't bored for even a second haha

it was fun, and I'm starting to like the storylines, it's getting interesting again, they're pulling me back in 😂😂

and next episode looks good too and Marjan is gonna be back!!! and for the first time this season I can genuinely say I'm excited and can't wait for the next episode 😂😂
