Tenet | Akito | Trial 5.5 | Re: Byrne, END, Erik A, Kori, Adrik / Attn: An and Calluna
“Respectfully, I… You know what? That is not a helpful conversation to have in a public space like this,” Akito stops himself, recognising that this is not the time or place for whatever he was going to say to Byrne. “I don’t deny that I’ve built up a web of lies about myself to stay on top of things, or engaged in further intelligence gathering disguised as two innocuous party events, and that’s because this is simply the person I’ve always been. I’m a liar when it benefits me, and I’ve accepted that means I’ll have to leave some bridges burnt beyond repair for it. Now, I’m afraid I’m going to have to move on from trying to prove myself to you, and address everything else instead. We’ll talk later. Or not.”
As both END and Erik A come by to check his phone, Akito gives his boyfriend a tight hug, exchanging no words back to him but for the silent gesture of solidarity. “I didn’t spot any sign of charred or burnt fabric over the place where An was supposedly tasered,” he first explains to END once they’ve headed back. “But it happened too quickly for me to catch anything in the few seconds they showed it off, which is why I suggested taking a closer look to see if there was one. And yes, neither Kaguya’s research nor the collaborative report on VR technology is remotely new information to us, but I was archiving the evidence in the hopes that I or someone else could keep ahold of it if the experiment met a premature end. In fact, I got around to it precisely because of the ruckus in the early morning, I took it as a sign that someone was in the process of finding us. There was a broken tracking device in the list of confiscated items, after all… I wouldn’t be surprised if it belonged to me, though I’ve no memory of actually having it.”
He turns to his boyfriend. “I received a duplicate of my old thermos from Byrne on the first day of the third week we were here. Honestly, and both Adrik and Kenshin can vouch for this, we didn’t encounter any my old thermos during our investigations of the third floor, so I had honestly no idea it was going to appear where it did. I’m certain that the game disc is planted evidence; if you use different kanji to read [Akito], you’ll get the characters for “autumn” and “outbound”, so as you’ve probably worked out from the context of the notes and what I’m saying, Fallout is the alias I’ve been working under as a whistleblower. It was a mistake to sign off with in hindsight, but I didn’t know that Calluna could also speak Japanese fluently at that point in the first week, not to mention that if Erisu is Az-8, then they have a native speaker on their team regardless.“
Next, he gives Kori an appreciative nod. "Something else An said, specifically when we were all gathered to find the body, also stuck out. ”I guess you should be happy somebody was fighting for you shits. Too bad that had to end, huh?“ Both of them have been pushing a very particular narrative that Erisu was responsible for helping the group behind the scenes, and that her actions forced their hand. The biggest defense some of you initially put out as to why Erisu couldn’t be Az-8 was because they framed her death as getting rid of a loose end, but if she is Az-8 then the whole narrative falls to pieces. As for that note, well, consider that there are four of us native Japanese speakers who were alive if you count Erisu, and by the metric we established earlier, both Kenshin and Kori couldn’t possibly have strangled Erisu given their current condition. It was a conditional trick to make you focus your efforts on me.” That last part is directed back to END, given the context. “I can also answer that I planted that dossier and the puzzle. I needed to get information out in public without drawing too much attention as to who wrote it, and at the same time, scour out just how much the sisters knew about my connection to HPGB. They confronted me soon afterwards, and then ended up finding out more about me than I had anticipated, and it’s been fucking me over ever since. Fucking memory machines.” He grumbles.
“All else I can offer is that the current bottle of Julietenizone in the morgue was restocked and sealed as far as I could tell, but obviously the sisters would have had backup bottles to restock it in the first place. I had checked Erisu’s arms and neck for any signs of an injection port and found none, but there are several other areas of the human body where you could reasonably inject the drug that I was not comfortable stripping her to check with Jae-min around.” Probably for the best. “The others have asked their questions about whether Erisu is alive, and I’ll echo them with one more. An, why wouldn’t you have simply answered Erisu’s question over text, if you were the only one who was watching us and had no one watching you?”

The Pokemon Timeline theories
Generation 1 takes place at the same time as Generation 3, then three years passes; in Johto, a boy or girl is starting their Pokemon Journey; halfway on their journey, they capture the Red Gyrados. The report on the Red Gyrados appears on TV Screens in Sinnoh, thus kicking off Lucas/Dawn’s journey. Meanwhile, the Trainer who started their journey in Johto have travelled to Kanto, where some things have changed in three years: Koga has taken a spot in the Elite Four, so his daughter Janine is now in charge of the Gym; Blue, the Rival of Red three years earlier is now a Gym Leader. Eventually, after beating the Kanto Gym Leaders the Johto Trainer battles Red atop Mt. Silver. The Battle Frontier is opened in Johto and Sinnoh, and a teenage girl named Caitlin is one of the Heads. However, she leaves the battling duties to her butler. Many years later, Caitlin leaves the Battle Frontier to take up a spot in Unova’s Elite Four. Sometime after that, Hilbert/Hilda, Cheren and Bianca is starting out on their journeys across Unova; on the way, they encounter N and Team Plasma. Alder, the Unova Champion, becomes a mentor to Hilbert/Hilda and Cheren. So anyway, after Team Plasma is defeated, N decides to leave Unova; Hilbert/Hilda meets Looker, who is investigating the Seven Sages. After the Seven Sages are taken into Looker’s custody, Looker tells Hilbert/Hilda to look for N, and so they leave Unova. Two years later, Cheren becomes a Gym Leader while Bianca decides to become an assistant to Professor Juniper. A boy named Hugh is determined to find his sister’s Purrloin; at the same time Bianca is giving one of the Starters to a boy or girl in Aspertia City. A series of events which ends with N’s return and the Battle against Champion Iris is what follows; The Pokemon World Tournament is opened, against the then-known Pokemon World’s top Trainers. At the same time, a new discovery is made; The Fairy Type, in the Kalos region. A group of friends start their journeys through Kalos, fighting the Gym Leaders and Team Flare befre Calem/Serena fights against the League. After their victory, a parade is held and Calem/Serena meets the mysterious AZ, the ancient King of the region. After a battle, AZ is reunited with his Florette and they vanish. Soon after, Sina and Dexio leaves for Alola; at the same time, a boy named Gladion has stolen a Pokemon from The Aether Foundation and joins Team Skull. Twenty-one months later, a girl named Lillie steals a Cosmog from the Aether Foundation, and escapes via Teleport; she is taken in by Professor Kukui. Three months later, a Trainer from Kanto has moved to Alola with their family; the mother is half-Alolan, so she wants her kid to experience the Trials. The Trainer meets Hau, and they meet Lillie and Nebby. They then takes part in the Trials; during the Trials, Kukui reveals to the player that he is setting up a “Pokemon League for those who passes the Trials”. The player and Hau travels to the Aether Foundation where Lusamine, President of the Foundation, reveals an Ultra Beast; Nilhego. She then vanishes with Nilhego and the Trials resume. Lillie gains confidence, and after the player beats the Trials, decides to go and retrieve her mother. Nebby evolves into the Legendary, Solgaleo or Lunala, and the Player and Lillie goes into the Ultra World. They see Guzma there, and manages to retrieve both Lusamine and Guzma. Ater the Player becomes Champion, a party is held and the Player and Lillie sneaks off to find Tapu Koko; the Player battles and catches it, and return to the party. The next day, Lillie decides to travel to Kanto to try and find a way to remove Nilhego’s venom from Lusamine, and at the same time, become a Trainer. Soon after, Looker recruits the Player to help retrieve the Ultra Beasts with Annabel, who came from a different Universe. Sometime after the Ultra Beasts, the Aether Foundation is raided by an unknown third-party. The unknown person stole the blueprints for Type:Null and a Beast Ball and flee to Galar. The Beast Ball is hidden in Stow-On-Side while a fourth Type:Null is created by Marcos Cosmos. Several years later, Victor/Gloria and Hop are Endorsed by Leon, to take on the Gym Challenge; on the journey, the Player meets Marnie, a girl from a decaying town who is hoping to become the next Champion, and Bede, a boy who has been endorsed by Chairman Rose. During the course of the story Bede loses his endorsement after destroying a landmark, and ends up being taken in by Opal. By the time the player reaches the Semi Finals there are very few people left. After beating Marnie and Hop the player then faces the Gym Leaders before facing Leon. Before the battle Chairman Rose announces that he has started “The Darkest Day” in order to avert an energy crisis in a thousand years. After going to the Energy Plant the Player and Hop arrive just in time to see Leon attempting to catch Eternatus, only for the Champion to fail. With Leon out, it’s up to the Player and Hop to stop Eternatus; aided by the Wolves, the Player and Hop successfully managed to stop Eternatus. A few days later, the Player manages to defeat Leon. Sometime later, the new Champion has to deal with a crisis in the region. After resolving the crisis Hop announces that he is going to study under Professor Sonia. The player then travels to the Isle of Armor and then Crown Tundra. Months later and the Galarian Star Tournament is set up.
My theory: Red/Green/Ruby/Sapphire-3 years-Gold/Silver/Diamond/Pearl-13 years-Black/White-2 years-Black2/White2/X/Y-3 years-Sun/Moon-5 years-Sword/Shield.
We do know that Generations 1 and 3 games takes place at the same time
Generations 2 and 4 takes place three years after (Due to the mention of the Red Gyrados in Johto and the hope that the cameraman can get a glimpse of it)
Black and White takes place around 13 years after the events of Generations 2 and 4 (Caitlin is now older, Darach my have either retired or died as in the Unova games, Caitlin refers to him in past tense, Cynthia mentions Lucas/Dawn)
Black and White 2 takes place two years after that (Cheren is now a Gym Leader, Bianca is now an assistant to Professor Juniper, Hilbert/Hilda has been gone for two years; Brycen, Leonra and the Stiration Triplets have stood down as Gym Leaders, Alder is retired and Iris is now the Champion)
X and Y takes place at the same time as Black2/White2 (One person in Courmaine City mentions Team Plasma, someone on Route 10 mentions Colress; the only older character to appear is Looker, however the latter is justified due to the other characters that could have appeared taking part in the Pokemon World Tournament)
Sun and Moon take place two years after that (Sina and Dexio mentions the “Five Heroes who saved Kalos”, Grimsley have a different design while Red and Blue appear a lot older; Cynthia and Wally are also older)
Sword and Shield takes place some five years after that (The Aether Foundation is mentioned while Rotom can inhabit PC’s; another theory is the time it takes between Marcos Cosmos’ raid on the Aether Foundation and the creation of a fourth Type:Null. As seen in the files on the Beast Killer Project in Sun and Moon, it took a long time between the budget for the project and the time it took to create the three Type:Null in Alola. We do know Type:Null was created before Pokemon X and Y as Gladion stealing his Type:Null at the same time the events of Black2/White2/X/Y takes place. In real life, it can take between 5-10 years for advanced projects to reach fruitition. Plus the fact none of the older characters are seen or even mentioned bar Kurt makes me believe that some of the characters from Gens 1 to 7 may have either passed away or retired from Pokemon battling.)

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
July 29, 2021
Heather Cox Richardson
The ripples of the explosive testimony of the four police officers Tuesday before the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol continue to spread. Committee members are meeting this week to decide how they will proceed. Congress goes on recess during August, but committee chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS) suggested the committee would, in fact, continue to meet during that break.
Committee members are considering subpoenas to compel the testimony of certain lawmakers, especially since the Department of Justice on Tuesday announced that it would not assert executive privilege to stop members of the Trump administration from testifying to Congress about Trump’s role in the January 6 insurrection. This is a change from the Trump years, when the Department of Justice refused to acknowledge Congress’s authority to investigate the executive branch. This new directive reasserts the traditional boundaries between the two branches, saying that Congress can require testimony and administration officials can give it.
Further, the Department of Justice yesterday rejected the idea that it should defend Congress members involved in the January 6 insurrection. Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) sued Alabama Representative Mo Brooks, as well as the former president and Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, for lying about the election, inciting a mob, and inflicting pain and distress.
Famously, Brooks participated in the rally before the insurrection, telling the audience: “[W]e are not going to let the Socialists rip the heart out of our country. We are not going to let them continue to corrupt our elections, and steal from us our God-given right to control our nation’s destiny.” “Today,” he said, “Republican Senators and Congressmen will either vote to turn America into a godless, amoral, dictatorial, oppressed, and socialist nation on the decline or they will join us and they will fight and vote against voter fraud and election theft, and vote for keeping America great.”
“[T]oday is the day American patriots start taking down names and kicking ass!” he said. He asked them if they were willing to give their lives to preserve “an America that is the greatest nation in world history.” “Will you fight for America?” he asked.
To evade the lawsuit, Brooks gave an affidavit in which he and his lawyers insisted that this language was solely a campaign speech, urging voters to support Republican lawmakers in 2022 and 2024. But he also argued that the Department of Justice had to represent him in the lawsuit because he was acting in his role as a congress member that day, representing his constituents.
Yesterday, the Department of Justice declined to take over the case, pointing out that campaign and electioneering activities fall outside the scope of official employment. It goes on to undercut the idea of protecting any lawmaker who participated in the insurrection, saying that “alleged action to attack Congress and disrupt its official functions is not conduct a Member of Congress is employed to perform.” This means Brooks is on his own to defend himself from the Swalwell lawsuit. It also means that lawmakers intending to fight subpoenas are going to be paying for their own legal representation.
If the committee does, in fact, start demanding that lawmakers talk, Brooks is likely on the list of those from whom they will want to hear. Trying to bolster the new Republican talking point that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) should have been better prepared for the insurrection (this is a diversion: she has no say over the Capitol Police, and she did, in fact, call for law enforcement on January 6), Brooks told Slate political reporter Jim Newell that he, Brooks, knew something was up. He had been warned “on Monday that there might be risks associated with the next few days,” he said. “And as a consequence of those warnings, I did not go to my condo. Instead, I slept on the floor of my office. And when I gave my speech at the Ellipse, I was wearing body armor.” “That’s why I was wearing that nice little windbreaker,” he told Newell. “To cover up the body armor.”
Brooks is not the only one in danger of receiving a subpoena. Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) admitted on the Fox News Channel that he spoke to the former president on January 6, although he claimed not to remember whether it was before, during, or after the insurrection. He tried to suggest that chatting with Trump on January 6 was no different than chatting with him at any other time, but that is unlikely to fly. Jordan also repeatedly referred to Trump as “the president,” rather than the former president, a dog whistle to those who continue to insist that Trump did not, in fact, lose the 2020 election.
Meanwhile, it looks more and more like Republicans, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), are eager to change the subject. McCarthy today tried to walk back his previous blaming of Trump for the events of January 6, trying instead to tie Pelosi to the riot. He told reporters that when he said on January 6 that “[t]he President bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters” and that Trump “should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding,” he made the comment without “the information we have today.” Then he tried to blame Pelosi for the Capitol Police response.
McCarthy seems unable to figure out how to handle the changing political dynamic and is continuing to shove the octopus of his different caucus interests into the string bag he’s holding only by promising that the Republicans will win in 2022. To that end, he is essentially walking away from governance and focusing only on the culture wars.
In addition to pulling the Trump Republicans off the select committee on the insurrection, he also pulled all six of the Republicans off a key committee on the economy, the Select Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth. At a time when voters in all parties are concerned with the huge divergence in income and wealth in this country, a divergence that rivals that of the 1850s, 1890s, and 1920s, members of this committee could make names for themselves.
Ohio Republican Warren Davidson was one of those removed from the committee; he told Cleveland media he had been “looking forward” to participating and would “gladly rejoin” the committee if McCarthy relented, but it was Ohio Democrat Marcy Kaptur, still on the committee, who got the headline and the approving story.
Instead of this productive sort of headline, Representatives Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and Louie Gohmert (R-TX) staged an event in which they tried to visit the accused January 6 rioters at a Washington, D.C., jail. Refused entry, Gohmert told the press: “We’re in totalitarian, Marxist territory here. This is the way third-world people get treated.”
McCarthy and fellow Trump supporters are trying to get their own headlines by opposing new mask mandates as the Delta variant of coronavirus is gathering momentum across the country. On Tuesday, the attending physician for the United States Congress, Dr. Brian Monahan, reinstated the use of masks in the House of Representatives and recommended it in the smaller Senate. On Wednesday, Pelosi required the use of masks in the House, and reminded members that they would be fined for refusing to wear them. All of the Democrats in the House are vaccinated; it appears that only about half of House Republicans are.
Today, House Republicans launched a revolt against mask use. They are trying to adjourn the House rather than gather with masks. Chip Roy (R-TX), said "This institution is a sham. And we should adjourn and shut this place down.” Representatives Greene, Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Andy Biggs (R-AZ), all maskless, gave Roy a standing ovation. Today, a group of House Republicans without masks posed for cameras as they tried to gain entrance to the Senate.
Consolidating around Trump after his November loss was always a gamble, but increasingly it looks like a precarious one. Just this week, the former president tried to sabotage the infrastructure deal, and 17 senators ignored him. In Texas, on Tuesday, Trump’s ability to swing races was tested and failed when the candidate he backed—even pumping a last-minute $100,000 into the race—lost.
McCarthy has promised to win in 2022 with culture wars rather than governing, and that looks like an increasingly weak bet. But make no mistake: the ace in his vest remains the voter suppression laws currently being enacted across the country.

via Politics – FiveThirtyEight
On Tuesday afternoon, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced her plans to open an official impeachment inquiry against President Trump. Although she and others in House leadership positions have resisted opening formal impeachment proceedings for months, a deluge of new calls from more moderate members of her party may have cemented her decision to move forward.
More than two-thirds of the Democratic caucus now favor beginning an impeachment investigation in response to allegations that Trump attempted to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into investigating former Vice President Joe Biden, and may have threatened to withhold foreign aid.
This is a huge change from the end of July, when we last checked in on where impeachment stood among House Democrats. At that point, just a few days after special counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony before two House committees about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 campaign, 109 Democrats were in support of impeachment. Granted, more than half of House Democrats have been in favor of impeachment since early August, but that number has now risen to 179, according to the New York Times,1 which means a solid majority of the Democratic caucus now supports impeachment.
Of course, a lot could depend on how the next few days unfold — in particular, whether the White House turns over the transcript of Trump’s July 25 call with Zelensky or the whistleblower complaint (which the administration has so far refused to share with Congress, despite a subpoena). After all, some moderates have hedged saying they’d support impeachment if the allegations prove true. But if the accusations against Trump are borne out, the remaining Democratic holdouts could face increasing pressure to support the impeachment inquiry — for one thing, Democrats are still short of the 218 votes they need for an impeachment resolution.
So how did we get here? The dramatic uptick in support for impeachment since July is due to two main shifts. First, during the August recess, a steady trickle of Democrats announced their support for impeachment, perhaps in response to pressure from people in their districts. And second, in just the past few days, dozens of Democrats have lined up in support of an impeachment inquiry for the first time, including a significant number from red and purple districts that Clinton either lost or won by 10 points. In fact, more than half of the Democrats who recently joined the pro-impeachment column come from districts that Democrats lost or won by less than 10 percentage points. These are the members who have the most at stake electorally if an impeachment inquiry backfires against Democrats, so their support is especially noteworthy.

This means the base of support for impeachment has become more ideologically diverse. For instance, if we look at the districts where House members now support impeachment, Trump lost these districts in 2016 by around 31 percentage points. But in July, his average loss in these pro-impeachment districts was 38 percentage points, showing that members from more moderate districts have joined the cause. (For reference, Trump lost the average Democratic-held seat by 28 percentage points, and he lost the districts of Democratic members who are currently not supporting impeachment by an average of 18 percentage points.)
And while some moderates have been careful to say their support is conditional on the allegations being true, some potentially vulnerable Democrats seem to be in favor of an impeachment inquiry regardless of what happens next. For example, Rep. Antonio Delgado, who represents a district in upstate New York that Trump won by 7 points in 2016, said that asking the Ukrainian president to investigate Biden was “in itself an impeachable offense.”
The new supporters for impeachment also include a significant number of Democrats from very liberal districts who had previously resisted calls for impeachment. As the table below shows, only 18 Democrats from very liberal districts continue to oppose (or remain undecided/refuse to comment) on impeachment — down significantly from the end of July:

Some recent switchers from the more liberal camp include Georgia civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, a Pelosi ally who called for impeachment proceedings in a dramatic speech on the House floor on Tuesday, and Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan, who had previously argued that impeachment would “tear the country apart.” It seems that for many of these Democrats, the gravity and scale of the allegations against Trump finally outweighed concerns about whether an impeachment push without bipartisan support would be too divisive, or if it would be useless to impeach Trump given that Senate Republicans are highly unlikely to vote to remove him from office. (Although there was a flicker of bipartisan energy in the Senate on Tuesday evening, when a nonbinding resolution calling on the Trump administration to release the whistleblower complaint passed unanimously.)
Opposition to impeachment among Democrats from red and blue districts has also fallen over the past few days, but there are still a significant number who do not represent very liberal districts and who haven’t yet endorsed an impeachment inquiry. Of the 64 Democrats from districts that Hillary Clinton won or lost by 10 points or fewer in 2016, more than half now support impeachment. That’s more than twice as many than at the end of July, but a sizeable chunk still haven’t gotten on board. And as the table below shows, many of these Democrats hail from districts that Clinton lost:

Some of these Democrats may remain wary of embracing impeachment — and that could be tricky for House leadership down the road, if they do decide to pursue an impeachment resolution. But the fact that Democrats like Delgado, Rep. Elissa Slotkin, and Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who are all from districts that Trump won by 7 points in 2016, are newly supporting impeachment could embolden other moderates to join them.
Regardless of what happens next, it’s clear that the political ground on impeachment has shifted dramatically among Democrats in a very short period of time. Even Biden, who previously said that impeachment proceedings would be a “giant distraction,” said that the House should move forward with impeachment if the Trump administration refuses to turn over information about the call with the Ukrainian president. And as FiveThirtyEight’s editor in chief, Nate Silver, wrote Tuesday, pursuing impeachment is a big risk for the Democrats, considering how unpopular it remained throughout the course of the Mueller investigation. But for the first time, the vast majority of House Democrats seem willing to take that risk.

You might not know it from the headlines, dear reader, but the presidential contest is not the only election happening in 2020. Control of the U.S. Senate is also up for grabs, and the party in charge of Congress’s upper chamber could determine the fate of many of the policies currently grabbing attention in the presidential campaign. As we noted right after the 2018 election, Republicans are favored to retain a majority in the Senate in 2020, but Democrats also have a realistic — if difficult — path to winning back control. This is the first of a series of regular updates on what’s happening in Senate contests around the country, so let’s take a look-see at the latest developments.
First, the top-line situation. Republicans are favored to hold on to the Senate, as they currently have a 53-to-47 seat edge,1 which means Democrats must gain a net of four seats for outright control, or three seats and the vice presidency, as the vice president casts the tiebreaking vote. What’s more, the competitive races in the Senate in 2020 will probably be on Republican-leaning turf, which should give the GOP a baseline advantage. However, Democrats’ silver lining is that the GOP has to defend 23 of the 35 seats on the ballot next year, and election forecasters Inside Elections, Sabato’s Crystal Ball and The Cook Political Report currently rate Democrats’ opportunities to pick up seats more favorably than Republicans’. (Though Republicans, of course, can win the Senate by simply hanging on to the seats they have.)
And keep in mind that the presidential race at the top of the ticket may be critical in determining which party wins control because of just how nationalized our elections have become. In the 2016 election, for instance, every state with a Senate race backed the same party for both president and Senate for the first time ever.2
Republicans must defend nearly twice as many Senate seats

Open seats are ones with retiring or resigning senators.
FiveThirtyEight’s partisan lean metric is the average difference between how a state votes and how the country votes overall, with 2016 presidential election results weighted at 50 percent, 2012 presidential election results weighted at 25 percent and results from elections for the state legislature weighted at 25 percent. Note that the partisan leans in this article were calculated before the 2018 elections; we haven’t calculated FiveThirtyEight partisan leans that incorporate the midterm results yet.
But declining approval ratings may be a warning sign for endangered Republican incumbents in battleground states. The partisan lean metric in the table above measures how much more Democratic- or Republican-leaning a state is than the country as a whole,3 and all five GOP senators defending seats in states with a partisan lean of less than R+10 saw their approval ratings worsen in the third quarter of 2019, according to data from Morning Consult. And all but one — Arizona Sen. Martha McSally — has a net negative rating (approval rating minus disapproval rating).

This is particularly worrisome for Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Cory Gardner of Colorado, who will likely need some ticket-splitting in their Democratic-leaning states to win reelection. Most notably, Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst’s net approval rating dropped about 9 percentage points, falling into negative territory, though it dropped the most among Republican voters, who may come back into her fold by Election Day. Democrats probably need to defeat most or all of these senators — North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis is the fifth — to capture the Senate, and they have to be pleased that the public image of these incumbents has taken a hit. Of the Democrats in currently competitive contests (that is, those not rated as “safe” for either party), only Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith saw a decline in her net approval, although it remains fairly positive overall (+13).
Yet it’s certainly not all bad news for Republicans. Recent polling in Michigan, for instance, suggests they have a real shot of putting the state’s Democratic-held seat in play. Two recent polls found Democratic Sen. Gary Peters barely ahead of or in a dead heat with Republican John James, who lost Michigan’s 2018 Senate race but performed better than expected relative to the Democratic lean of the national environment. Although another poll found Peters ahead by 16 points, so it’s not entirely clear yet how competitive this race is, but given that President Trump carried Michigan by 0.2 points in 2016, it should be a competitive environment where James could take down Peters, especially if he can once again outperform expectations.
But we’re a long way from November 2020, so plenty of curveballs could still shake up the Senate picture between now and then. Consider, for example, that former Attorney General Jeff Sessions is reportedly considering a run for his old seat, which Democratic Sen. Doug Jones won in a surprise victory over scandal-ridden Republican Roy Moore in a 2017 special election. Major contenders for the GOP nomination — including Moore, who’s running again — aren’t inclined to get out of Sessions’s way just yet though, as his position in the party is somewhat complicated given Trump’s still-simmering anger over Sessions’s decision to recuse himself from the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. If Sessions runs and Trump openly opposes him, that might make for a wide-open and unpredictable GOP primary. Jones, who is an underdog for reelection, would probably prefer the chaos, but we’ll know more very soon — the deadline to enter the race is Nov. 8.
As in Alabama, the eventual nominees in a handful of other races could influence how competitive they are. For instance, although New Hampshire is very narrowly divided between the parties (Hillary Clinton carried the state by less than half a point in 2016), election forecasters think Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is in relatively good shape to win reelection — the median race rating there is “Likely Democratic.” That’s partly because the GOP lacks a top-tier challenger there, but that could change if a high-profile Republican like former Trump campaign manager Cory Lewandowski jumps into the race. New Hampshire Republicans have said they worry that Lewandowski could harm the GOP ticket, but considering the razor’s edge by which Trump lost New Hampshire in 2016, Lewandowski’s entrance into the race while Trump is at the top of the ticket could make the seat less safe for Democrats.
Meanwhile, Democrats are hoping that state Sen. Barbara Bollier, a Republican-turned-Democrat who is their likely nominee, can run a competitive race for Kansas’s open seat despite the state’s strong Republican lean (R+23.3). And the GOP candidate most likely to make that possible for Democrats is former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who lost the state’s 2018 gubernatorial race. For that reason, national Republicans don’t want Kobach to win the GOP nomination, but thanks to the crowded GOP primary field, Kobach’s conservative base of support might be enough for him to win with only a plurality. The real Kansas wild card, of course, is Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who has done nothing to tamp down speculation that he might seek the seat. Pompeo is a former representative from Kansas and his entry might clear the GOP field — he doesn’t have a potential anti-Trump problem like Sessions.
As for the newest Senate race on the 2020 calendar — Georgia’s special election — there’s also a fair amount of uncertainty there. Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson announced that he will resign at the end of 2019, but Republican Gov. Brian Kemp has yet to announce who he will appoint in Isakson’s place. Some notable Democrats have entered the contest for Georgia’s other Senate seat (that’s right, both seats are up), but so far only Matt Lieberman — son of former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman — has announced a bid for the special election. Notably, Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath appeared to be preparing a run for Isakson’s seat, but decided to seek reelection to the House instead. Republicans are favored in both Georgia races, but Democrats will still want to have strong candidates contesting both seats in case the electoral environment is friendly enough to make Georgia a swing state. The close gubernatorial race between Kemp and Democrat Stacey Abrams in 2018 could portend a competitive presidential contest there, though Trump won the state by 5 points in 2016.
There will be many more twists and turns in the 2020 Senate race, so watch this space — we’ll be tracking all the ins and outs of the battle to control Congress’s upper chamber.

The snowball part 26
Sorry, I left this update longer than I wanted to but uni work had to come first (I had to basically finish Jane Eyre in 3 days so read 400 pages in 2 days).

A growing collection of people who have asked to be tagged in updates, thanks guys xx @illyrianinterrasen @bluephoenix222 @personpersonper
Feyre heard from her small room when the hired band started playing and the soft murmurings of people as they walked down the hallway to the ballroom.
She was anxiously clenching and unclenching her fists as she waited nervously for Mor to return. There had been an issue with a seafood dish that Mor had deemed a catastrophe and had gone to investigate, leaving Feyre to wait alone. She kept checking her phone by the minute, hoping to see a text that Mor was on her way back. Feyre really didn't want to have to enter the gala on her own.
Half an hour had passed and Feyre could now hear the party in full swing just a few rooms away. The sounds of people laughing and tinkling of glasses as people drank.
Where was Mor?
Just as Feyre was about to call her, her phone lit up with a text from Rhys. 'Everything okay?' He asked.
'Mor told me to wait for her.' Feyre responded, not wanting to admit that she just didn't want to go alone.
A few minutes passed before Rhys sent her another text. 'Mor's here with us. She said to just come out now because she'll still be a while.'
Taking a deep breath Feyre looked herself over in the mirror one last time. She glared at herself, willing her shoulders not to cave in slightly, for her neck to stand tall, and her face to be held high. She would not let fear, or her past, dictate how people would treat her tonight.
'Okay. Coming now.' Feyre quickly texted Rhys before stepping into the hallway.
Cassian had been slumped at a table, his hand under his jaw as he watched with amusement as Nesta and Azriel awkwardly stood near the buffet table together. Nesta was glaring at anyone who looked her way, as Azriel held a small plate of food he was picking at but not eating in an effort to keep himself occupied.
Cassian snorted in amusement at how miserable Azriel looked, despite him easily being one of the friendliest and most approachable one of their friends. Nesta had that effect on people. For people that weren't Cassian that is.
Putting on his best mischievous grin, Cassian thought he should go and relieve his brother from his obvious discomfort.
"Az, Rhys wants to see you." Cassian said, sauntering over.
Azriel looked visibly relieved, disappearing so fast he nearly forgot his unwavering manners, quickly nodding to Nesta as he left.
"What do you want?" Nesta asked icily.
"I'm actually just here for the food." Cassian said dismissing her entirely, as he grabbed a plate and started piling up food. "Nice dress." He added, eyeing up her dark blue gown.
Nesta absentmindedly plucked at the fabric. "Feyre picked it out for me."
"It suits you."
Nesta glanced at him suspiciously. "You're being nice?"
"I'm often nice, to people who are nice to me that is."
Nesta snorted. "Your friends would say otherwise."
"They only say it with love." Cassian paused, "What do your friends say about you Nesta?"
Nesta's face turned bright red. "I'm done talking to you." She said, turning to leave.
But Cassian gripped her wrist tightly to stop her, but not enough to hurt. "I know that Amren thinks you're incredibly smart. Mor admires your ferocity. Azriel thinks when you're not frowning you have quiet a lovely smile. And Rhys respects you. These are your friends Nesta. They care about you, why do you push them away?"
Nesta stared back defiantly at Cassian. Ignoring his question entirely as she stared him down, "And what do you think of me?"
Cassian opened his mouth to speak, but suddenly closed it. He turned his face away, letting go of her wrist. "... Enjoy the gala." He muttered before turning his back.
Elain had been sitting at a table with Amren, who only slightly terrified her, and Rhysand, who Elain couldn't stop herself from staring at. He was in a black suit with gold trim, the details so fine and exquisite Elain had to refrain from asking where he bought it.
He looked tense. His gaze constantly roving the hall searching for someone. Feyre. Elain immediately thought. She hadn't seen her youngest sister all night.
People were in constant revolvement of their table with many richly dressed men and women approaching Rhys to shake hands and talk quietly with him. Rhys happily introduced Elain to them who gushed over Elain's dress and hair, which she had entwined various flowers into. But Elain could tell Rhys was distracted.
"Should I go and check on her?" Elain asked.
"Feyre's fine, she'll be here soon." Amren interrupted coolly.
Rhys looked down once more at his phone in response. "She should be here by now." He said quietly.
But Elain was interrupted from answering by the shadow of a man standing over here. When she looked up she smiled sweetly into the face of Lucien.
"Lucien! You look great, you even brushed your hair." She joked.
Lucien self consciously smoothed down his long, tied back hair.
"I still think you should have let Elain braid it." Amren teased.
Lucien's face turned pink in embarrassment.
Just then the band picked up a fast beat that Elain recognised. She jumped to her feet, startling Lucien. "Come dance with me!" She squealed excitedly, pulling Lucien along by the hand.
Lucien looked back at Rhys for help, but Rhys only laughed and shrugged, urging him to follow Elain.
"Those two are... odd." Amren drawled from her chair, watching the two with feigned disinterest.
"Feyre thinks so too. I don't know what to do about it though." Rhys replied.
"Don't do anything. Let it run its course and see if it works out." Amren shrugged.
When Rhys again checked his phone Amren sighed in disgust. "Oh stop you're worrying, there she is."
Rhys looked up in time to see the great double doors opening and a small figure he would recognise anywhere, slip through. She tried to remain unspotted but as she approached the staircase to descend, the lighting hit her and audible gasps rose from the room.
From a dark corner Cassian had been watching Nesta as she slowly moved around the room. She must have been searching for Feyre or Elain, just for someone to talk to.
Well Cassian was done trying to talk and be nice to her. For tonight at least. The gala was full of plenty of interesting people that he would occupy himself with instead.
Just as Cassian got up to find an old friend, he noticed Nesta's head whipping to the doors as they opened. Her mouth dropped open in surprise as she took in whoever had just walked in.
Cassian followed her line of vision and saw Feyre enter shyly, wearing a dress that Cassian knew only Rhys could have found for her. He found himself smiling at the sight.
Elain was leading Lucien around the dance floor, trying to loosen him up from his stiff and proper demeanour. His hand was holding hers loosely and his other hand was resting high on her back in-between her shoulder blades.
"Come on Lucien! Stop watching your feet and dance with me properly." She teased.
Lucien slowly raised his eyes to hers, his cheeks turning pink again as she smiled encouragingly at him. His mouth opened to say something to her but Elain stopped moving, looking at something over his shoulder.
Lucien's heart sank. His request to take a walk with her outside in the garden forgotten on his lips as Elain dropped his hand.
Lucien turned to see what she was staring at and was shocked to see Feyre entering the ballroom, looking more beautiful and happy than he had ever seen her with Tamlin, even if her smile was slightly tinged with fear as she beheld the packed room of people.
Rhys lost his breath as he saw Feyre practically glowing in her dress, light bouncing off her and shimmering as she took a hesitant step down.
People cupped their hands to their mouths as they began whispering. Rhys heard words ricocheting around the hall, convinced they were all just as stunned as himself. Until he caught words like "Tamlin", and "gold digger".
Feyre must have heard them as well as her foot halted on the second step, hovering in place with a look of fear on her lovely face. Her eyes darted around the room quickly and the hand holding up the train of her dress trembled slightly.
Rhys stood slowly from the table. He began politely sidling past people, resisting the urge to push people out of the way in his need to get to Feyre. To show her he was there. That she could do this. That what the others thought didn't matter.
Eventually people saw him coming and started to part for him, making his process much quicker. As a ripple effect took part in the crowd, Feyre looked up, searching for the source of the disturbance.
When she finally found Rhys, their eyes met for just a second, Rhys accidentally stepping on someone's toe as he forgot to look where he was going.
Feyre's foot connected with the second step.
When Rhys reached the bottom of the stairs, he looked up at her and to Feyre's obvious surprise, he bowed at the waist, glancing up quickly to wink and offer her a challenging smile.
Somewhere from within the crowd Cassian wolf whistled, and Feyre had to stifle a laugh, moving down to the third step.
Seeing that Feyre was moving, Rhys straightened. Close enough now to properly see Feyre, as if from a distance he had only been looking at her through a frosted window. Now he could take in all of her beauty at once. His eyes raked up and down her body once, twice. Stopping to look at her face, her hair, not missing a single bit of detail.
Feyre blushed furiously under his stare. And suddenly it was if no one else in the room was there at all. She reached the bottom of the stairs, stopping before Rhys, who offered her his arm immediately.
Feyre slipped her hand into the crook of his elbow and allowed Rhys to escort her through the crowd, staring down those who looked at them too critically, and warmly smiling at those who also smiled at them.
He pulled her onto the dance floor as a new song was beginning by the band.
"I thought we both knew that I can't dance." Feyre joked in his ear, remembering their drunken night out.
"Luckily, I am a good enough dancer for both of us." Rhys laughed back. "You look lovely by the way." He added, running another appreciative glance over her.
"Thanks for the dress."
"It was nothing. Although I doubt Mor will ever forgive me."
"She was not impressed that you hid it from her." Feyre laughed.
"She doesn't look too mad right now." Rhys said, indicating with his head a column that Mor was watching them from, her hands clasped together tightly as she smiled softly at them.
"Is that Elain dancing with Lucien?" Feyre asked in shock, noticing the two nearby.
"She dragged him off right before you arrived."
"Lucien looks so stiff he could be a statue." Feyre giggled staring at his rigid form.
"I don't think Lucien is used to dancing with pretty girls." Rhys smiled down at her.
"Unlike you?" Feyre asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I thought I was used to it. Until tonight and I realised I'd never had the chance to dance with you."
Feyre took a step closer to Rhys as his hand on her back simultaneously pulled her towards him.
"How has Nesta been tonight?" Feyre almost hated to ask, stopping Rhys from where he was beginning to lower is face to hers.
Rhys growled roughly in the back of his throat. "I'd much rather talk about you right now." He said leaning in again.
But Feyre's hand gripped his tightly, to the point of nearly breaking the skin on his palm. "Everyone's staring Rhys."
Rhys took in her tense face. The way her eyes were constantly flitting to the watching crowd around them.
Rhys stopped moving, cupping her face with both of his hands. "I love you Feyre. And I don't give a damn what these people think. If I get a chance to show people how much I love you, I'll do it every time. If you think-"
Feyre cut Rhys off smoothly by raising herself on her toes to kiss him roughly. Ignoring the murmurs around them, she threw her arms around his neck as Rhys practically lifted her off her feet in his eagerness to return her kiss.
When Rhys bunched his hands in her hair, Feyre broke off the kiss smiling at him. "Mor spent at least on hour doing my hair, you'd better not wreck it." She laughed.
"I promise not to ruin your hair darling." Rhys whispered to her, leaning in once more.
"They're disgusting aren't they?" Amren said to Cassian who had joined her at her lone table.
Cassian looked again at Rhys and Feyre kissing in the middle of the room. "You're happy for them. Your foot's tapping, and you only do that when you're happy." Cassian pointed out.
"Only because they were both so stubborn I thought it'd never happen. Just like a certain other couple I know." She said dangerously.
"Amren you'll have to be a little more specific." Cassian rolled his eyes.
"I saw you talking to Nesta earlier." Amren said with glittering eyes.
"Yeah and look how well that worked out. Nesta wants nothing to do with us."
"You mean you?"
"Yeah, me too." Cassian sighed.
"Look's like your luck's about to change." Amren mused to herself.
Cassian looked up to ask what she meant when he saw Nesta bee lining for them. She stopped shy of their table, a foul mood practically rolling off her.
Cassian ignored her, not wanting to get into yet another fight. So nothing surprised him more than when Nesta spoke to him a single word, "Sorry."
"What?" Cassian sputtered.
"I said I'm sorry. I was unnecessarily cruel tonight." Nesta said, looking obviously uncomfortable.
"Just tonight?" Cassian asked with a grin.
"Don't push it."
"I'll only accept your apology on one condition." Cassian said wickedly.
Nesta eyed him up uneasily. "What condition?"
"You dance with me."
"Absolutely not."
"Come on Nes. We can't let Elain and Lucien of all people show us up." He said getting to his feet.
"Don't call me tha-" Nesta was cut off as Cassian pulled her by the arm to dance, Amren shaking her head in amusement at them.
Throughout the night Feyre drank and happily danced with Rhys, as well as Cassian when he asked to switch partners. Rhys had looked at her in fear as Cassian twirled Nesta towards him while Cassian reached for Feyre.
Feyre had laughed with Cassian as Rhys attempted to dance with Nesta who obviously was uncomfortable.
At one point Feyre noticed Mor talking to a pretty girl at the back of the room, the two laughing together.
Whenever Rhys let Feyre sit down to rest her already sore feet, they were constantly hounded by friends of Rhys who wished to be introduced. Out of all the people she met, one of her favourites was a tall, dark man who introduced himself as Tarquin when Rhys was busy talking to others.
He had kissed her hand formally and told her how stunning she looked, all within earshot of Rhys who appraised Tarquin with surprise. Feyre later learned that Rhys hadn't known the man that well but he was known to them and Rhys had been trying to schedule a meeting with him for months. He was both surprised and annoyed that he seemed to have taken such an interest in Feyre.
Later on Feyre was introduced to old friends of Rhys, Helion and Kallias. Kallias was friendly but was distracted from their conversation as he was always searching the crowd for the beautiful woman he had arrived with.
"I see why you've kept her hidden from us for so long Rhys, she is exquisite." Helion said after he had introduced himself to Feyre.
"Can you blame me, when everyone knows what a shameless flirt you are Helion." Rhys said, warmly shaking his friend's hand.
"Is this who you learnt it from?" Feyre asked Rhys, bumping his hip slightly.
Helion laughed while promising he would come visit for dinner more as he was intrigued by Feyre.
It wasn't long before Feyre had relaxed and begun to really enjoy herself.
Towards the end of the night Rhys took to the band stage to thank everyone for attending, as well as donating throughout the night. So much money had been raised that he now thought they stood a chance of being able to buy the land back from Hybern, allowing them all to keep their properties.
This news was met with cheers and loud clapping as Rhys lowered his head in thanks, before leaving the stage.
Rhys rejoined the small circle of his friends smiling at them all happily.
Feyre saw from the corner of her eye the front door opening and a man enter. She didn't recognise him but he had the dark hair and tanned skin of an Illyrian as he scanned the room, stopping when he saw Rhys.
He pushed people aside roughly until he had reached them, pulling Rhys aside to speak quietly with him. Feyre's heart stopped as she saw Rhys start shaking his head in disbelief, hands covering his face in what looked like grief.
Feyre was at his side in an instant. Their friends watching on anxiously. She reached out to grip his shoulder to get him to look at her. "What is it?"
When Rhys looked up his face was so angry, so on the brink of exploding with rage, that Feyre took an involuntary step back. At that Rhys's eyes widened as he read what Feyre was seeing, or rather comparing him with, and he immediately schooled his features into something much calmer.
Looking at his friends he steeled himself to tell them the news he had just received. "We're too late. Hybern has already blocked off the neighbourhood and has a team of bulldozers set up."

Sure, a few Democrats have been embroiled in sexual harassment scandals. But, as usual, that’s nothing compared to the list of button-down, family-values Republicans who have gotten caught with their zippers literally and/or figuratively down. Let’s remind everybody: >> Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX): The man who once publicly apologized to BP for having to clean up after its Deepwater Horizon oil disaster in the Gulf got caught sending masturbation photos to women. Won’t seek reelection but will continue to stink up the halls of Congress for another nine months. » Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ): Pressured aides to have his baby for $5 million. Resigned. Wednesday is his last day. Special election in late April. » Rep. Blake “Pajama Boy” Farenthold (R-TX): Settled a sex discrimination suit with taxpayer money. Won’t seek reelection but will continue stinking up the halls of Congress for another nine months. » Rep. Patrick Meehan (R-PA): Hit on an aide, then used taxpayer funds to pay her off. Resigned, but will continue stinking up the halls of Congress for another nine months. » Gov. Eric Greitens (R-MO): Cheated on his pregnant wife by going all 50 Shades of Gray with his hairdresser. Blackmailed his lover by allegedly tying her up while naked, blindfolding her, and taking photos that he threatened to release if she talked. He refuses to resign, but is under official investigation. » National RNC finance chairman Steve Wynn: The gambling-empire weirdo and one of Donald Trump’s closest buddies in the whole wide world resigned over the weekend as dozens of reports of sexual harassment surfaced. » Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL): Fired his chief of staff over the weekend over sexual abuse allegations. » President of the United States Donald Trump: As of today, 19 women have credibly accused the president of sexual assault. Admitted on tape that he enjoys kissing and groping women without their consent. A porn actress was paid $130,000 from his campaign fund (after the election) in exchange for her silence over an 11-month affair she had with Trump after his third wife had just given birth. Fire and Fury author Michael Wolff even believes he is currently having an affair in the White House. The Republican party and the conservative evangelical movement have circled the wagons to defend the president at all cost. And in other news, there are no women of either party caught up in sex scandals at this time.
