general story: we all know they don't need no such thing as "protection" from whatever that may be because they already intimidate people around them. but with you, you see the need to do so. they don't understand why but they're happy you're looking out for them too. until you're out beating everyone's asses if they talk shit about them/plan to do smth to them left and right and eventually tarnishing your reputation and eventually everyone sees you as a delinquent.

ushijima blinks at hearing the whole story from your friend. because you did what? you almost had someone end up at the hospital because they were talking shit about him, saying he wasn't all that, and that maybe they could sabotage him in some way?? he is dumbfounded and could only sigh (tho he did call you a dumbass in his head). your friend frowns cos no way he just sighed like this was an everyday occurence??

well, to be fair, some dunces were trying to bully tendou. it was only right that you kicked them where the sun didn't shine. some guy also yelled smth about how they wouldn't be able to have children if you put more force into that kick but you couldn't care less. tendou winced and is shaken at the whole ordeal while you happily grabbed his hand and offered to buy whatever food/snacks he wanted as an apology for having seen that.

semi was just trying to show you a new song he learned to play on his guitar in the band room. when someone started saying backhanded things to him, he looked uncomfortable and the vibe in the room wasn't good. it went on as subtle insults until the meaning behind them were clear so with a tambourine, you wacked the side of their face, ending with a clinking sound and a thud. unfortunately you didn't kill them but you were left with a panicked semi.

since the coach was out, reon and you decided to mess around instead of kicking his ass to go back to practise. doing stuff ranging from taking weird pics or funny candids of each other to flaunting your muscles to see whose were better and decided to test each other's strength. of course you won (over the course of many rounds). nobody said a thing and really only just praised you until someone snickered at reon but like in a bad way so that's how your fist ended up in their face.

yamagata's a short king okay. of courseee he needs protecting /j. he's not that short + he doesn't necessarily but he does joke around about you being his bodyguard and stuff cos you're significantly taller than him and you're visibly toned. he vibes with basically anyone and with the addition of you, nobody tries to mess with him. you're an intimidating presence so unfortunately you don't get to throw your fists to anybody's faces with him.

shirabu has pride in you. he screams, "go get 'em!!" to you at people he does not like and is entertained at the sight of them having their ass handed back to them, he even laughs and smiles like it's a movie. this isn't limited to anyone, it's literally for everyone who pisses him off and when they show clear discontent when they're with him. of course he does remind you to calm down... sometimes.

kawanishi would look so done with you but is also flustered with you looking out him. he feels so special when you callout people on their bs or when they're clearly making him uncomfortable. but alike shirabu, he does watch the whole thing unfold with a smirk and giggles from time to time when they think they could mess with you.

the first time someone talked down on goshiki, you didn't take more than a second to return that attitude with a little (you mean a lot of) force. he was so stunned and his heart was beating so fast at how attractive you looked doing it but also because he felt panicked and started overthinking that he thought he was going to have to go to juvie for being an "accomplice". you reassured him it was nothing before dashing because teachers were rushing towards the scene, ready to reprimand you two.

yknow. while theres obvs a whole host of deliberate references saltburn pulls from mythology and classic literature, theres a lot of more contemporary, probably unintentional parallels i noticed could be drawn as well! (mainly my own faves bc my favorite hobby is projection)

so, in no particular order:

saw 2004. this ones a bit of a stretch but i mean, cmon. homoerotic bathtub. also the twist villain (ish), themes of vouyerism, playing games with peoples motives, pitting people against each other and exploiting power dynamics+dirty laundry. and the class disparity between the two love interests (yes saw is also a gay romantic tragicomedy to me. sorry)

dark shadows (the movie not the show) oliver is very vampire coded (i need to make a whole separate post abt that tbh) so hes barnabus collins. pamela is the redheaded dr. cotton whose overstayed her welcome. "the eggs are made for you. everything else is on the side"🤝"we dont have horses. we have a chevy". tragic gothic murder-(almost)-suicide romance. ig this makes felix josette, venetia carolyn, and farleigh the spooky little kid who can talk to ghosts,,,,,? eh yea ok its not a 1:1 ratio

hereditary. elspeths scream finding felixs body in the morning. the tendency to just fully suppress trauma until its impossible to ignore at which point it spills out in the most ghastly ridiculous ways. the undercurrent of intergenerational mother-son trauma. the way they both seem to juggle two focuses at once, one focus being interpersonal dynamics, the other being class commentary (or supernatural horror in hereditary, though id argue saltburn succeeds at this where hereditary falls flat) also the twist that its not in fact the family thats scary and culty and weird and ultimately the biggest threat, but an outsider (hated that twist in hereditary, loved it in saltburn)

sucker punch. again the theme of vouyerism! also consent, sexuality, and hypersexuality, getting by on charisma in a losing battle when surrounded by those with systemic power over you (farliegh ily mwuah), the fine line between desire and glorification and dehumanization, and how it forces the audience to do the uncomfortable work of reconciling our desire to take the eroticism presented to us at face value and sexualize the characters and their relationships, with the power imbalances and therefore inherently dubious consent between them (and us, the audience)

a girl walks home alone at night. this ones mainly just the title, but again i just really like the subversion of expectation that oliver is gonna be the one helplessly sucked into this whirlwind of danger, when in reality, hes the threat. and both the cattons and we ourselves as the audience wholly underestimate him due to the implicit biases it forces us to reconsider

the hunger games. more vouyerism, the way it catches the audience in wanting to focus on the romance because its comfortable and what we're used to, rather than actually look beyond the surface and engage with the power imbalances, particularly the classim and racism commentary. also that scene where oliver looks out the cab window and sees saltburn for the first time reminded me a lot of peeta and katniss looking out the train seeing the capitol

euphoria. ik yall noticed the jules and felix parallel w the angel wings, and duh jacob elordi is in both. but can i also pose that they both have themes of coodependancy and love as addiction and favorite persons and not loving someone as a person but simply loving to be loved. and also body glitter and cocaine

Lila is humperdink and you just gave us some very good reasons behind that - what about Chloe as Rugen? the obvious choice would be putting her as humperdink bc queen bee=prince/king whatever, so what makes her a good rugen instead? and what is their dynamic like?? Rugen/Humpy in the book/movie is VERY different than how the two interact in the show...except for being mutually twisted and evil ig

lila and chloe are both mean but they arent the same kind of mean and they arent means that get along. they are VASTLY DIFFERENT breeds of Mean Girl. my humperdinck and rugen DO NOT get along in fact i think them just absolutely hating each other and hating working together but still banding together for a COMMON CAUSE (murdering marinette) or against a COMMON ENEMY (marinette) is v solid and and hilarious and also means that they are nowhere even close to a well oiled machine so things can go SO batshit bonkers wrong. murdering marinette is probably the only reason they even teamed up to begin w bc chloe was like oh i know this SUPER ANNOYING little rat who people LOVE for literally NO REASON you should fake marry her and then kill her. and lila is immediately down bc marinette IS very obviously charming and easily loved which is like super disgusting and annoying BUT means she can ride off that secondhand clout for the REST OF HER LIFE if she is tragically widowed (BONUS that she gets to usher marinette into the sweet arms of death after completely isolating her from her previous life and everyone she knows!!)

i initially started reading this for the hornee but w o w that "plot twist" that was like predictable but somehow flipped the entire dynamic?? amazing.

on the surface its another "big strong emotionless boss gong" falling for "soft little cutie shou" n borders dubcon except then it's revealed the shou Purposely wanted it to happen to capture the gong n thats so??? god. everything was in ruan zheng's hands from the v beginning n luo yu was played for a fool, but he then became a willing fool for ruan zheng anyway

n that quote in the ending... perfect. god. ykno my faith in kabiqiu was shaking bc social outcast Was Not It but outside the law completely restored that faith like this is so???? it perfectly skirts that line of unhealthy relationship n the power dynamics between the two... im speechless

it also breaks my heart when ruan zheng got "stood up" 3 yrs before n all his attempts at trying to get luo yu's attention (by messing w his business) failed n his conclusion is that "i can't be ruan zheng for luo yu to love me" n so he became su jiawen n luo yu did grow to love him n what rly kills me is that luo yu still loves him even after he finds out he's deceived

ruan zheng is so??? hes such a powerful shou. even luo yu says that ruan zheng is willing to sit pretty in his collection because he wants to---he holds all the power in their relationship. he loves luo yu but he isn't willing to have some halfhearted fwb relationship, he'd rather not have anything else to do w him. he's manipulative, devious, prob a yandere, all around dangerous, n after the identity reveal i even felt kind of like uh luo yu u sure ur making the right decision w this dude? but ig a perfectly healthy relationship isn't exactly what they both want anw? it's like this v delicate balance that kabiqiu explored in a mere 15 chapters n wow it's so satisfying

“i heard you told my partner some stuff that was not so nice,” gojo says, ignoring the woman’s questions. her eyes widen in shock at the use of partner. had she and the man before her not just gone out to dinner the previous night?

“wha—”

gojo cuts the woman off before she can get a word in.“i just stopped by to let you know that i’m done with you,” he cheerfully says, clapping his hands together. the woman’s jaw drops at how casual gojo states that he’s cutting off all ties with her. he turns his back toward her and begins to walk down the entranceway of her home.

“oh i forgot to mention something.” gojo smacks the side of his head before twisting his neck to the side to glance back at the woman still standing in her doorway. his eyes, a bright, brilliant blue, flash dangerously. “if i ever hear of you bothering my partner again,” his voice drops a few octaves. “you will not like the consequences.”

despite being an old and powerful vampire herself, the woman feels a shiver crawl up her neck. the gojo clan, especially the heir standing before her, is not to be trifled with. their power is infinite and their stature in vampire society is grand. they can get away with anything with little to no consequences. the implications of gojo’s words are not lost on her.

after she overcomes her shock, she loudly huffs to convey her annoyance (and to conceal her fear) before slamming the door behind her.

gojo smiles to himself before continuing down the pathway. he can’t wait to get back home to you.

What I love about them:

i like ladies who are kind of mean i like characters with emotional problems and complicated relationships i like when they go a little bit feral and smash things i like servants who rankle under the unfairness of the class system i like characters who are drowning in desperation for things to change but have no idea how to accomplish that. i like messes. she is basically the perfect character alksdjkflsdkjl

What I hate about them:

i wish the gothel twist had been executed...better.

okay this is kind of cheating a little bit but like. evil therapy with zhan tiri in the middle of OAH is pretty choice. i just love ziti heckling cass for her dumb decisions and cass going BUT MY EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS. their interactions in OAH are the closest i’ll ever get to bitter snow canon so i’ll take it.

What I would like to see more focus on:

i would LOVE to see more s3 rewrites that don’t boil down to “cass took the moonstone to protect rapunzel...somehow.” like. there are a lot of S3 rewrites out there that either give the moonstone to someone else (a la moonvarian/moongene) OR reduce cassandra’s motives to “i will sacrifice my life/good standing in corona/everything to nobly save rapunzel from herself and then...pretend to be a villain because reasons.” and blech. i don’t like either.

but fanworks that dealt with the gothel stuff and cass’s s2 baggage at the same time, in a less stupid and probably exec meddling way than s3 itself handled the gothel stuff? or fanworks that explore entirely different motives for cass to take the moonstone (like how DF!cass essentially grabs it because fuck you i’ll PROVE you should have listened to me by... [checks notes] helping zhan tiri escape? jksdfk). or i’d love to see more well-thought out AUs with alternatives to the gothel twist (like...saporian cass... /broken record) (i’d even like to see a dark princess cass au if it weren’t done in the kind of standard. “cass takes moonstone because BIRTHRIGHT” sort of way)

i think there’s just so much raw potential in the setup of 1+2 and i would love to see more people bringing that to fruition without either sidelining cass or gutting her character by taking the one selfish thing she does and trying to make it actually a selfless/self-sacrificial thing 

What I would like to see less focus on:

nothing has soured me harder on requited cassunzel than the near-ubiquity of “princess/knight post-canon dynamic, but cass is completely fine with it this time” in cassunzel fanworks alsfdjk

more generally i think there is a line of thinking (maybe?) that the real issue is rapunzel not listening to cass so the class/power disparity between them would be fine if the communication was better, and i just plain do not agree with that interpretation—i think the communication problems are symptomatic of the deeper problem of the class/power disparity—and i can always tell when a fic was written with that mindset and it always feels like “cassandra, but two inches to the left” so ig i’d like a bit less of that?

Pre Dark Age Hype

I’m back folks, and no question about it:

I just finished a readthrough of Iron Gold in preparation, and I have some updated thoughts/predictions/hopes/fears! (Mild spoilers for the Dark Age excerpt below the line)

I’m still very intrigued by Lysander and where his story is going. He’s much more likable in the first half of IG, before he starts buying in to all the Iron Gold bullshit. He’s clearly had his memories of his mother tampered with, as evidenced by the piano scene with Gaia. Something in the Dark Age excerpt caught my eye w/r/t this; the bit about Atalantia being good at something called neural extraction. Could Atalantia have had something to do with those memories being gone? Where’s that all going to lead?

Still on the topic of Lysander, I’m really hoping to see him interact with Mustang, either in DA or book 6. From his flashbacks in IG, he seems to have had a good relationship with her back when she was on Luna, even being a bit awestruck and wanting to impress her. Lysander seems more sympathetic to lowColors than many golds, and he’s got compassion in him. If Mustang had stuck around Luna and the Rising had never happened, I can see her having influenced him to become a political reformer as well. As it is, she kidnapped him and then sided with Darrow, which I’m sure felt like a betrayal to Lysander. I’d really love to see them interact again.

Diomedes is by far my favorite Rim character, and I’m really fascinated to see where his story goes. He almost certainly let Cassius go, and he’s probably in love with Aurae, the Pink. His honor binds him to his remaining family’s cause for now, but I think his story has some twists incoming.

I liked Lyria even better this time around (this is my second, or maybe third readthrough?). I really liked her scenes with Mustang in particular (okay, maybe that’s just because I was desperate for any Mustang scenes in IG). I am optimistic that her situation with Victra will get sorted out soon, but I have no idea what Lyria’s future looks like now. I guess we’ll see.

I disagree with the notions flying around that Darrow is going to be the main villain of this series. He’s going through a “rough patch” right now, but he right to ignore the peace talks bullshit, and if he’d had the Senate’s support none of them would be in this mess right now. I think Dark Age is gonna be a tough slog for him, but he’s still got Mustang on his side, and now (via DA excerpt) everyone knows the peace was a lie, so they’re gonna have stronger ground to stand on politically at least. 

I love Rhonna, I would die for her. Darrow and Kieran need to stop coddling her and let her prove her worth. Alexandar is a smug little shit but I kind of love him too, and I like their dynamic together. Here’s hoping they don’t die.

Deeply pumped to have the only thing I’ve ever wanted, a Mustang POV.
