“No you don't. You just told me you don't have emotions, so how could you? But maybe you could at least simulate a minimum amount of concern for your flipping partner, okay?”
“Okay.”
“Good. Now tell that android to hurry up so we can get out of here and I can stop looking at your stupid face.”

Things changed quite a bit once Orpheus took the title of Night God. His powerful and respected father, now honored with the title of elder god, stepped down willingly and went on to discover what the next chapter in his life would be. Orpheus took to the intimidating promise of the future with pride and optimism; surely he could reach and even exceed his loved ones’ expectations. After all, he had a son now, shared with his newly-made-immortal husband, and he wanted to do his part to make the world greater for their sake.
But said husband, while holding himself up to the same hopeful view as Orpheus, couldn’t help but grow weary. Being a god meant more time away. Away from him and their son, in the apartment they would only be able to occupy for maybe another five years before they would have to make their quiet exit from human existence.
Uriah dreaded that change. All he had worked for, all of his best achievements and memories had happened while he lived in that city. He loved his career, and the work he was doing for the betterment of the world at large. Regret wasn’t the right word for it, because he loved his husband too much to truly regret the choices he had made, but Uriah knew he wasn’t completely satisfied with the outcome. There would be so many things he would miss.
So, after he rocked Izark to sleep in his arms, and laid him down in his crib of nested-up blankets and pillows, Uriah went to his bedroom alone and sat heavily on the edge of the bed. This bed was the same one he’d shared with Orpheus for a handful of years. All of the love and security he’d felt when his husband held him there, the moments of passion and intensity, all of the sweet dreams and gentle waking whispers in the morning’s came rushing over him. He didn’t want to leave this place. This place was home.
The rippling of time and space barely phased him, as he was so used to it by now, but he didn’t need to turn around to recognize who had passed through the portal. The bed shifted as Orpheus piled on to it, reaching around Uriah’s torso to hold him.
“Hello, my love.”
“Hello.”
Uriah tilted his head up and back, and raised a hand to stroke Orpheus’ dusk-colored cheek.
“You were gone for two weeks. I missed you.”
A hint of remorse showed behind Orpheus’ smile.
“I’m sorry. You know I don’t like being away from you and Izark.”
He paused and glanced in the direction of the office-turned-nursery just down the hall.
“How is our starry boy?”
“Good. I just put him to bed.”
“Have you been alright without me?”
“Your father helps. I just don’t understand naga babies as well as I do human ones,” Uriah sighed. “But he eats well. Sleeps okay. Plays a little rough, though. Ankle-biter.”
Both of them laughed quietly, not wanting to disturb their son just a few feet outside their door. But Orpheus could still see how tired his beloved was underneath the positive exterior. He leaned down and kissed the crown of his head, slowly stroking his sides.
“You’re tired, my love. How much have you slept?”
“I’ve...had better,” he admitted. “Between Izzy sometimes waking me, thinking ahead about everything, and missing you, I guess...”
He trailed off helplessly. Orpheus frowned sympathetically, and pulled his husband into his lap. His purr was soft and deep as he brushed his cheek against Uriah’s.
“I’m so sorry,” he whispered. “I promised to take care of you both, but I’ve been gone so often... You deserve better from me.”
“You can’t help it. You’re a god now. That’s not an eight-to-five weekday job, and I knew that when I married you.”
Their foreheads met. Uriah kissed him gently, and a shaking sigh ran out of his chest.
“But damn, do I miss you...”
“I miss you, too. Every moment. I just want to be here, with my beautiful husband and our sweet boy—“
Both of them flinched as a high-pitched squeak errupted from the nursery. Uriah groaned and ran a hand down his face as more chitters followed.
“Aw, dang it, I was hoping he’d sleep through the night.”
Orpheus set Uriah down onto the bed and rose, stroking his cheek.
“You go ahead and get into bed, love. I’ll take care of Izzy.”
“You sure?”
“You need the rest,” Orpheus insisted. “Besides, I’ve missed our little ‘ankle-biter.’”
He gently nudged Uriah along as Izark’s squeaks started again, then turned to slither to the nursery. It was crowded compared to when he’d first moved in; Uriah’s tidy office was now half-overrun by their son’s crib and necessities, and a multitude of toys with varying levels of teeth marks and loose stuffing. In the crib, Izark was perked up, wide eyes glancing around for entertainment. He wriggled as his father approached.
“Daddy’s home, little one,” he crooned, scooping his child up and cradling him. “What’s all the fuss about, hmm? Can’t sleep?”
Izark burbled and rubbed his cheek against Orpheus.
“I know, Daddy’s been away a while, hasn’t he? But you know what would be nice? What if we tried to sleep now, and then in the morning Daddy will spend so much time with you. How’s that sound, Izzy?”
The hatchling squeaked, but settled into the bend of his father’s arm. Orpheus kissed his forehead and carried him back to the bedroom just as Uriah was pulling up the covers.
“Can he sleep with us? I’ve missed both of my favorite boys.”
Uriah’s smile was tired, but warm.
“Yeah. I think that’d be good.”
“You hear that? Dad says you get to sleep in the big bed tonight,” Orpheus cooed, nuzzling Izark. He carefully maneuvered his tail so Uriah would have enough room, his coils making a small loop where Izark could safely settle down between them. It took him a moment, but soon Izark had fluffed the blankets to his liking and plopped down.
Orpheus smiled at Uriah, and reached for his hand.
“Of all the places my title takes me, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than here with you two.”
Uriah intertwined their fingers and brushed his lips across his knuckles.
“Immortality wouldn’t mean anything without you.”

In which they volunteer for a rescue
Tumblr media
First: In which the human is transformed Next: In which they travel to the cave of the earth Previous: In which they finish building a house
Warning! This chapter has descriptions of burn wounds! Reader discretion is advised.
“Oh! This hammock is comfy! Good choice me…” Alex hummed, climbing into his new sleeping spot now that night was seeping away the daylight.
“Comfier than sleeping in a tree?” Nelvana joked, standing by the hammock to observe.
    “Absolutely,” Alex laughed, stretching out.
“Okay, I wanna try then,” Nelvana responded, pulling herself up beside her partner before he could object.
“Wha- hey! You chose a nest, this is mine!” Alex spat playfully, nudging Nelvana.
“Yeah, I know… and I like the nest, but it’s nice to try this out too,” Nelvana hummed, “you’re right though, it is comfy up here.”
Alex rolled his eyes, still smiling, “yeah, it is. You going to stay up here tonight then?”
“Nah, not tonight. Sorry if I got your hopes up,” Nelvana replied, hopping back out onto the floor. “I want to spend the first night in the new house in my own bed.”
“I can’t see how you two would think that a hammock is comfy. It’s filled with holes!” Keahi commented.
“I must agree with Keahi, my claws would get caught and rip it. Being suspended in the air isn’t my cup of tea either,” Tsuki added, laying down on her mat.
“To each their own,” Alex sighed.
Nelvana curled up in her nest, cuddled under her blankets. Keahi sat down in zir own nest, that lacked blankets by choice. Outside the window, they could see the stars lighting up the darkened sky over the treetops.
“Will you be sleeping tonight?” Keahi asked Tsuki, who as a dark-type did not require much sleeping time.
Tsuki shook her head, “I should be fine for the next couple nights to stay up. I rested a few times while we were at Kangaskhan’s home, remember?”
“Oh yeah,” Keahi chuckled, “how often do you need to sleep, again?”
“Every few nights, depending on how much energy I’ve spent,” Tsuki answered, “I’ve spent a lot recently, and have had to sleep more. But since I slept recently, and we could be going back to work that I’m more accustomed to, I’ll be alight,” she explained.
“Alright, goodnight everyone then!” Keahi hummed.
Night, was a silent time. Tsuki was used to this. She felt comforted by the stillness of the world around her, the only sounds being from her friends, their breathing and the occasional rolling in their sleep. Nelvana, for example, was usually a particularly restless sleeper.
Tsuki sighed, resting her head on her paws and closing her eyes. Even if she wouldn’t sleep, it felt nice to rest her eyes. She lay there, just as quiet and as still as the rest of the house, staying alone with her thoughts.
A stinging ripped through her head just at dawn, shooting her up from her relaxing spot on the mat. Nelvana and Alex sat up, awoken by the sudden movement from the absol.
“They didn’t make it!” Tsuki yelled, scrambling to her feet unsteadily and looking to her teammates wildly.
“Who…?” Keahi questioned drowsily, now waking up from the yell.
“The temporary team! The search team!” Tsuki continued frantically, pacing around for a moment. “Team Recovery!” she added, remembering the team’s name. “We have to get them! We need to hurry!”
Nelvana stood up and approached Tsuki, “hurry where?” she asked her calmly, hiding her own anxiety at the situation well.
“To the square! They’ll appear there! Come on!” Tsuki responded, before finally bolting down the stairs, her head tilted to the side in pain from the stinging.
Nelvana followed swiftly, and Alex hopped out of his hammock to hurry right behind them. Keahi took a moment to process what was happening before joining the others. Clambering down the stairs, out the door, and down the path straight to Pokemon Square.
Tsuki sprinted right to the middle of town, the early rising pokemon that had begun gathering there jumping out of the way at the sudden appearance of the absol. She paid them no mind, instead she sniffed at the ground, taking careful steps around the center as she did her duty. Finally, she took a step back and stared expectantly at a spot in the center, waiting with her fur bristling and her face scrunched up.
Nelvana came in right afterwards, Alex right beside her as he opted to stay close to his partner instead of catching up to the other teammate. Nelvana did not follow Tsuki all the way to the center, instead she dug her claws into the ground and turned over to the Kecleon Shop. Alex followed her direction, slowing down to stand beside her. Keahi followed the both of them, but confused as to what they were doing at the stand, zie approached Tsuki to see if zie would be able to piece more together by the absol.
“Kecleons!” Nelvana blurted out, “we need you to get healing supplies ready! Don’t ask, we can pay later, just hurry!” she ordered.
“What? What’s going on?” Kecleon asked, but obliged anyway.
“Team Recovery failed, we need to be ready to intercept them when they teleport here,” Alex told them.
Keahi glanced back at zir teammates, then at the crowd beginning to form, and then back to Tsuki. Zie watched nervously, holding zir breath without realizing as the absol stood beside zim stiffly with her back beginning to arc and her head tilting to the side more.
For a moment, it seemed that nothing was going to happen, and that the absol behavior was simply erratic and feral. Then, there was a flash of light, and Team Recovery appeared in the spot Tsuki had been fixated on. Heat and the sickening stench of burnt skin seemed to radiate from the three unconscious pokemon, all piled up together.
One couldn’t help but have their eyes drawn to Blastoise right away, he was curled partway into his shell as if trying to escape to the safety of his own armor, but clearly it hadn’t been effective enough. The entire left side of his body from his foot up to the side of his face, which was beginning to swell up, was blistered and burnt, leaving his skin an angry purple-red tone that boiled against the usual blue, and even his shell was black and charred. The bandanna he wore around his head was just rags not, barely clinging onto his right ear, the edges black like the charred spots on his shell.
If one turned their gaze away from him, Golem held similar injuries, except seemingly less severe. The rocks coating most of his body was burnt black, like with Blastoise’s shell, but the actual skin had missed being terribly damaged. However, the rock shell had also melted and then been cooled back to solidity in some parts, the stone melding together painfully and creating various cracks and holes.
Octillery suffered the least amount of burning, though where she did get burned was on various parts of her tentacles, were blistered to the same degree as her temporary teammates. She also carried non-fire-type based wounds, such as deep bite marks tearing her skin and opening up holes for deep blue blood to ooze out off.
For what felt like a long, slow, minute, the town was suspended in tense disbelief staring at this horrid sight that had suddenly appeared in the middle of what was a normal morning. In reality, not everyone was frozen still in shock. The kecleon brothers acted swiftly, having already prepared with Nelvana and Alex’s warning, they leapt out from behind their stand carrying various berries, bandages, and other medical supplies. Nelvana blinked at the sudden movement, but collected herself and followed, as did Alex. She wrinkled up her muzzle at the scent, and made sure to focus on her breathing as she took in the sight more up close. Keahi scrambled around Tsuki and over to zir other teammates.
“They’re… they’re…” Keahi gasped, fluttering around zir wings uncertainly. “Oh Arceus, what happened…?” zie whispered, swallowing zir breath.
Tsuki stepped back from Team Recovery, giving the kecleons the space needed to administer the aide they need. She shook her head, tossing around her fur around and letting it flatten again. The stinging had faded, leaving her to analyze this scene as she normally would, and letting the pain of the situation sink in. She turned to the others, standing closely to Keahi in an attempt to provide comfort to the panicked torchic.
Alex opened his mouth, looking down at Keahi, but then closed it again, words failing him. Instead, he stepped towards Team Recovery, seeking to aide the kecleons in their work. The pair had split up to optimize speed in this healing, but with only the two of them, they couldn’t take care of everyone right away. They had started on Blastoise and Golem, arguably the worst off out of the trio.
Purple-Kecleon turned to look at Alex, without pausing in his work, “you know about healing, right? Could you help out with Octillery there?” he asked.
Alex nodded, and glanced back at Nelvana. She hesitated, but then nodded.
“Do you mind waiting here for a moment, Keahi? I’m going to try to help Octillery, will you be alright?” Nelvana asked Keahi softly.
“…yeah, I… I just need a moment. Go help them,” Keahi replied, offering zir partner a weak smile to assure her.
Nelvana returned the smile, and then followed Alex over to where Octillery lay. He had already gotten the jump on things and had brought out their supply of bandages, gauze, and berries.
Nelvana swallowed back bile, the burnt scent invading her nostrils, and the sight of the wounds itself seeming to bear into herself as she couldn’t help but imagine how Team Recovery had gotten in this state. She exhaled, and crouched down beside Alex. At least she wasn’t getting lightheaded like she had in similar situations... She bit her lip, deciding to handle the bite marks first, she collected a couple oran berries, along with some of the gauze and bandages.
“Hyper fang…” Nelvana muttered, “looks like raticate.”
Alex let out a hum of agreement, and without looking over, he slid a pecha berry over to Nelvana. She blinked at it, trying to remember why she might need it, but then recalled how some pokemon bites were more prone to infecting than others. Nearly every pokemon had the ability, deep down, to inject poison into another through toxic, and sometimes non-poison-type pokemon found this easier to reach, and could cause infections more easily than one might think that they should. She shook her head again, she couldn’t keep getting herself get distracted in her thoughts.
Nelvana let herself focus into this work, of cleaning the wound and bandaging it up. She fixed up the first bite slowly, to let herself recall how to go about doing it, and to ensure she wouldn’t make any mistakes.  Glancing over at Alex, she noticed that he was quickly working his way through the burns. He definitely knew more about that than her, did he- Careful not to drag herself down again, she moved onto the next bite mark, another hyper fang…
“They’re looking a lot better now,” Tsuki, who had at some point wandered closer, commented quietly.
Nelvana simply gave a nod of acknowledgment to her teammate, unsure of what other response to give to a comment like that. She glanced behind her to check on the absol, surprised to see Keahi standing there too. She hadn’t heard the torchic’s footsteps, and had figured that zie would hang back after that sort of reaction.
Noticing the cubone’s surprise, Keahi spoke up, “I know a bit about healing too… thought maybe I could help a bit,” zie murmured, zir voice oddly empty.
Alex finally looked up, “oh, that’s great. She didn’t look like it at first, but Octillery is just as damaged as the other two,” he said, “Keahi, you would know about burning, wouldn’t you? If you want to come help me, Tsuki could help Nel with the cuts and bites. It’ll be better to split up and work with what we already know.”
“Sure,” Keahi replied, walking over to the grovyle.
Nelvana couldn’t help but notice disappointment glimpse Keahi’s voice just then, but she had to agree with Alex in this instance. They couldn’t just go work with those they preferred, this was a matter of saving someone’s life.
Tsuki crouched beside Nelvana, “I don’t have the dexterity to apply the medicaments, but I can give you tips and pass you what you need at least.”
“That’s alright, anything helps,” Nelvana replied.
Time dawdled on as they worked, but with all of them working together, soon all of Team Recovery was fixed up, bandages covering their many wounds. The kecleon brothers muttered to each other about changing the bandages after a few hours, but Team Galaxy took this time to draw their attention to the pokemon still watching. There was the usual group that had been a part of any of the previous crowds, as well as a couple other rescue teams that hadn’t departed on missions yet. Shiftry stood by Kangaskhan Storage, pale to the face yet unable to turn away during this entire scene. Now that they were cleaning things up, he finally approached.
“Shiftry, hey!” Keahi greeted, zir own usual attitude beginning to return with their success at doctoring.
“Hello Team Galaxy…” Shiftry responded, looking over Team Recovery. “You did well here, you and the kecleons.”
“Thank you,” Tsuki replied, “the brothers were once part of a rescue team themselves, right? I’ve only heard it in passing…”
Shiftry nodded, “yes… They were the last platinum ranked team, before Team A.C.T., of course. They retired to their shop a few years back… Looks like their experience hasn’t faltered though.”
“Hey, where are the other teams, anyway? Team Rumble, Team Constriction… and Team Hydro?” Alex questioned, crossing his arms.
“Off doing missions, probably. They’ve always been out early,” Green-Kecleon said, entering the conversation with his brother.
“What do we do with these three?” Tsuki asked, “we can’t leave them in the middle of town, but I haven’t seen any sort of building for this sort of event…”
“Yes, what do we do?” a voice, from a raichu, hissed. “Team Recovery failed. Team fricking A.C.T. failed! No one can beat Magma Cavern!”
Cries erupted from the small crowd, which was only building with new discussion.
“That, is a lie. Pokemon have made it through Magma Cavern before-“ Purple-Kecleon started.
“But could they beat Groudon?” a scizor interrupted.
“No, but that’s just because Groudon wasn’t awake yet!” Green-Kecleon snapped.
“Maybe… we could wake up someone from Team Recovery, and see if they’re willing to tell us what happened,” Alex suggested.
Green-Kecleon clapped his hands together, “now that’s a step in the right direction! Let’s not plunge into hopelessness just yet, now, hm?” he exclaimed, “Galaxy, you examined Octillery, would you say she would be the best to wake up?”
“Depends, what condition is Golem in?” Nelvana asked, fidgeting with her club slightly, tracing circles into the ground with the jagged end.
“His shell seems to have taken most of the damage, but because of that, there is no way to tell how he will be when he wakes. It might be best to let him do that naturally,” Purple-Kecleon answered.
“Looks like Octillery is our best option then,” Tsuki agreed.
Green-Kecleon nodded, and brought out a small seed. He bit off the tip, and then placed the seed gently atop the water-type’s head. The reviver seed glowed softly, and then faded, the seed’s golden texture now faded down to a pale beige. Octillery stirred, slowly opening her eyes and blinking at everyone. She tried moving one of her tentacles, but winced in pain and stayed still.
“Don’t worry, you and your two friends are safe back in Pokemon Square. You were pretty battered, but we fixed you up,” Purple-Kecleon told her, “how do you feel?”
“Oh, simply rotten… everything is sore. But… we’re safe now? Is everyone okay? Oh, thank Arceus our badges worked…” Octillery gasped.
“Yes, you’re safe, and the others are alive and as well as they can be,” Green-Kecleon assured, “now, if you feel comfortable with this, it’s important that we know what happened in Magma Cavern.”
Octillery exhaled, and her eyes were drawn to the ground, “it was dreadful… the journey there went fine, but the dungeon itself…” she muttered, and looked up again, noticing Alex. “You were right. The fire-types were horrible, but there were rock-types and ground-types too. And the heat weakened our water, we couldn’t fight them properly…” she whispered, “it was monster house after monster house… we couldn’t take that much…”
“Monster houses…” Green-Kecleon repeated, tapping his chin.
“Monster houses? Like the one we ran into when we rescued Team Stars!” Keahi gasped, looking back at Nelvana, who nodded.
“They are becoming more common, aren’t they…” Tsuki added, “I’ve only been in one, and there aren’t supposed to be any in Frosty Forest…”
Octillery looked over the rest of Team Galaxy, her eyes landing on Tsuki, “you! Absol!” she suddenly hissed, “I should have known that the moment I saw you that this mission would end in disaster!” she accused.
    “W-Wha-“ Tsuki stepped back.
Keahi’s feathers ruffled up, “no, you have the wrong idea! Tsuki doesn’t cause disasters, she just-“
“You’ve been deceived,” Octillery continued, now glaring down the torchic. “Mark my words, that dungeon is cursed, one way or another!”
“Octillery, I think you could use some rest, okay? You’ve helped out lots, you can have this sleep seed and rest up now,” Purple-Kecleon inputted, handing over another seed, this one smaller than the reviver seed.
Octillery stared down the seed for a moment, “…sending another team there, would be suicide,” she muttered.
Then, she glared up at everyone harshly, before snatching up the sleep seed and eating it all at once, drifting off soon afterwards.
The crowd erupted into anguish, unable to hold back their fears any longer.
“Will the disasters never stop coming?”
“What if Team A.C.T. is dead?”
“If Groudon isn’t defeated, will the world fall apart?”
“Enough!” Kecleon, whichever one was uncertain, roared.
Fortunately, this worked for the most part. People stopped trying to talk over each other, and had turned their attention back to the retired brothers, and the silver ranked team. However, everyone could feel the continued tension in the air, and knew that patience wouldn’t last long.
“Well? What do we do now?” Raichu asked again.
“We have to try again,” Shiftry reluctantly answered.
“Didn’t you hear what Octillery just said?” an aipom fretted from the back of the crowd.
“Yes, yes I did… but we can’t just give up!” Shiftry insisted.
Scizor scoffed, “I don’t see you volunteering for this.”
Shiftry stiffened, but had no counter to this, knowing that it would continue to be pushed for no matter what he said, and went silent. He kicked at the ground, scowling.
“Shiftry is right. We can’t just leave Team A.C.T. behind like that, and if Groudon isn’t defeated, then the disasters will only continue,” Green-Kecleon said.
“And we don’t see you volunteering either, so don’t keep calling out everyone that tries to be motivating, ‘kay?” Purple-Kecleon added.
The argumentative pair fell silent now, but now so did the rest of the crowd. No one was willing to risk their lives after seeing what could happen, how the two teams that had tried had failed so horribly. Silence was ended as whispers rose up, too quiet and too many to pick out exact words.
Nelvana looked at her teammates. Keahi’s warm, orange feathers were still ruffled from Octillery, and now zie staring ahead at the crowd pensively. She swallowed her breath, it was odd to see her fire-type partner so hesitant and unsure, this morning had thrown zim for quite the loop. Alex gritted his teeth, staring down at the crowd with his piercing golden gaze. Of course… they both disliked crowds, but she was better at pushing through with her general socializing skills than he was. Plus, all these people voicing their doubts at once was also a painful reminder of how easily everyone had given up in the future. Tsuki was still uncomfortably standing to the side, Octillery’s words burned deep under her fur. To be constantly accused of causing the thing you want to stop…
    “We’ll go!” Nelvana cried.
Attention snapped back to Team Galaxy.
    “W-What?” Shiftry gasped.
“We’ll go! Us, Team Galaxy! We’ll go to Magma Cavern, and we’ll not only find Team A.C.T., but we’ll defeat Groudon and end the disasters!” Nelvana repeated.
Keahi burst into a smile, “yeah! Yeah, we will! We’ll go to Magma Cavern!”
Green-Kecleon clapped his hands, “good! Very good! And may you do well! I have upmost faith in you, Team Galaxy!” he whooped.
For the first time that had seen, Shiftry smiled, “haha! I knew there was something great about you guys! You go beat up that ugly legendary!” he cheered.
“We will!” Alex grinned, looking down at Nelvana excitedly. “We’re going to beat the gods to save this tim- world!”
“We’re going to end the disasters!” Tsuki exclaimed, bouncing in place, her red eyes alit with a sort of determination they hadn’t seen in her before.
Nelvana smiled, excitement bubbling up in her at the change in atmosphere. They would do this! Despite being an impulse decision, her entire team was on board, and so was this crowd that moments before was willing to just accept defeat.
In the bushes, she glimpsed movement. She turned to look over, spotting a familiar pokemon silently watching everything go down. However, realizing they had been spotted, this eavesdropper disappeared as suddenly as they had been noticed.

Chapter One
Aria's POV
The doctor finished examining me and put his stuff back in his briefcase, I could not tell if I was progressing well with the treatment or not because his facial expression was neutral. Lately I have been taking my treatment seriously, and it is all because of Axel. Before I met Axel was always questioning my existence on this earth, and always considered myself the unluckiest being on this planet but Axel proved me wrong. He always tells me to focus on the brighter side of life and forget about everything else. He is always so optimistic for a person whose world revolves around the dark, that is because Axel was born blind. When I got to know Axel and see the world from his point of view, I stopped feeling sorry for myself and started seeing the meaning of life and the importance of my existence.
"How is she doing doctor?" My mother asked as she entered the room, interrupting me from my thoughts.
The doctor looked at me then to my mother, his facial expression still not giving away anything. "May I talk to you outside, Mrs Watson?" He said to my mother who hesitantly agreed before walking outside my room with the doctor.
Just then Lisa, one of the house maids walked in my room, carrying a glass of water on a tray. "Here is your water for your medication." She said handing me the glass. "Thanks Lisa." I said taking my tablets.
"What did the doctor say?" Lisa asked as she sat down next to me on the bed.
"Nothing much, he just asked to talk to my mother." I said handing her the glass after I had taken my tablets.
"How are you feeling?" She asked.
"I'm okay." I said.
"Good to hear. Guess who is here to see you?" She asked teasingly and I immediately knew who she was talking about.
"Axel's here!" I said excitedly and she nodded.
"He is waiting downstairs for you, so you better get going, you do not want to keep him waiting." She said and I got up from my bed and headed downstairs.
I reached downstairs and I found Axel seated on one of the living room couches with his helper, Aiden.
"Axel!" I called out and he looked at the direction of which my voice was coming from as Aiden helped him stand up.
"Aria! How are you?" He asked. "I am great." I said as I went to give him a hug.
"I will take it from here Aiden." I said to Aiden as I took Axel's arm and started heading outside with him.
"How was your day?" He asked as we headed for the garden. "It was good."
"Really? What did you do the whole day?"
"Just reading some books and watching a little bit of TV." I said even though that was far from true, but I did not want to tell him that I spent almost the entire day being examined by my doctor.
"What about you, how did you spend your day?" I asked as I helped him sit on the garden swing and I sat next to him.
"I just did a bit of reading." He said.
"That's it?" I asked.
"I also spent my day thinking of you." He said and I couldn't help blushing.
Axel's family and my family are really close friends and they run their businesses together. I met Axel a year ago when my parents invited his family over for dinner, and I was so impressed by his optimism and funny ways. He and I instantly clicked and we became close. Our parents saw how close we had become and suggested we got married, which at first did not appear right with me as I saw things going a little too fast, but Axel saw that it was okay as we were already in love with each other and I also agreed and we got engaged. I really love Axel but something about this marriage does not appear right to me, I know that our families are doing this to expand their businesses but I can't help feeling that their is something else about it.
"Hey, why are you quiet?" Axel asked interrupting me from my thoughts.
"I was thinking about our wedding." I said.
"What about our wedding?" He asked taking my hand in his.
"You know it's in a few months."I said.
"I am aware of that, are you having second thoughts about marrying me?" He asked.
"No, not at all. It's just that....I don't know Axel."
"Just tell me Aria, what is it?" He asked giving my hand a light squeeze.
"You know I have treacher collins." I said and he sighed while passing his hand through his hair, obviously tired of me bringing up this conversation again.
"I know that Aria and we have had this discussion a dozen times, it doesn't matter how you look like Aria, I will never change my opinion about you."
"I know you have told me that so many times but....." I sighed cutting myself off.
"But what Aria?" He asked.
"What if you one day wake up and have the ability to see and look at my face?" I asked as I felt tears forming on my face.
"Aria I will still love you."
"No you won't, you will just run away from me like everyone else, because I look like a freak." I said standing up as tears started falling down my face.
Axel took hold of his walking stick and stood up. "Aria, I have never seen anything ever since I was born, I don't know how the world looks like, I don't even know what I look like, but if I were given a chance to see and I set my eyes on you, trust me if I say that you would be the most beautiful person on this earth that I had ever set my eyes on."
"Do you really mean that?" I asked as I wiped the tears of my face.
"Really." He said and I gave him a hug.
"Oh look, the sun is setting." I said as I broke the hug.
"Tell me, what does it look like?" Axel asked.
"Well, it is peaking from behind the mountains as it's slowly disappearing, the birds are flying in patterns as they head to their nests, and the sky appears to be reddish."
"I bet it looks amazing." He said.
"Yes, it does. Hey, let's take a picture to remember this moment." I said as I took my phone out of my back pocket.
"Now hold still." I said and took the picture with the sunset.
"How does it look?" Axel asked.
"It looks amazing." I said staring at the picture.
*******
I sat at the dinning table as I stared at the picture of me and Axel on my phone. He and Aiden had already left a while ago and I couldn't stop thinking of him. My mother came and joined me and I put my phone away.
"You can start serving the food." She said to the maids.
"Isn't dad joining us?" I asked
"No, your father is really busy so he will just eat in his study room, that reminds me, Maya, please take some food for my husband in his study."
"I am not surprised that he is busy." I murmured to myself but my mother heard me.
"Aria, don't say that, you know your father has a lot of work, it is not easy being the owner of one of the biggest companies in the country."
"Yeah right." I said rolling my eyes.
"How was your day with Axel? Did you two have fun?" My mother asked changing the topic.
"Yeah we did, he is really nice." I said, taking another bite of my food.
"You must really like him." My mother said.
"Of course I do, it's not like he ignores me like everyone else." I said and took a sip of my water.
"That's not true sweetheart, you know I never ignore you."
"Yeah, you don't ignore me, but what about dad?"
"Aria, your father is just busy."
"Stop it mum, just stop defending him, I am no longer a child, I can see what is going on. How come he is always busy on the days I am present on the dinning table, but when I don't feel like eating or choose to have my food in my room, he always shows up at the table."
"Aria please....."
"Save it mum, I'm done!" I snapped as I stood up and headed for my room.
My father and I have never had much of a relationship ever since I was a child, my mother is always the one holding us together. I have never really understood what was going on when I was a child but now that I am grown up, I clearly see what is happening. My own father is ashamed of me and it's all because of my face. I have tried everything I can to make my father proud of me and at least look at me twice in the face but everything I do is futile. One of the main reasons I agreed to get engaged to Axel was to make him happy but he never acknowledged that. To him I am always going to be a burden that he has no choice but to bear with.
