Non-Stop Spider-Man #1: The lead story was fun, the backup was dopey, I’ll give it another issue or two to see where it goes.

The Immortal Hulk #44: While it was too late for this week I’ve taken Hulk off my pull list, so the store won’t order any copies specifically for me and therefore my future purchase of the book won’t support Joe Bennett’s presence, just the store. This issue is typical of some of the books’ weaker installments of the last year or so - feels like well-done regular superhero comics instead of Immortal Hulk - but those last couple pages bring it back around.

Daredevil #28: Holy cow, those King In Black issues actually mattered. God this book is still so fuckin’ good in so many ways, everything every dumbass street-level superhero ‘deconstruction’ wants to be when it grows up.

Children of the Atom #1: Sucks real bad! This weird combo of ‘hip new young Marvel heroes!’ trappings and soulless X-Men lifer comics execution that feels certain to appeal to neither group.

Eternals #3: Of the listed Deviants I imagine I’d relate most to Annoyed Veug.

Commanders in Crisis #6: While I remain without the ability to weigh in on this objectively, this is the issue that to date most feels like it lives up to the promises of the series premiere.

The Wrong Earth: Night & Day #3: Little disappointed personally with the reveal of what the third world is - I assumed it was going to be more of a straight take ‘modern’ version to the other two’s flavors of throwbacks - but this series still rules. And that ending.

Home Sick Pilots #4: Okay, I think I can follow what’s happening at this point, still enjoying it.

Proctor Valley Road #1: I review these books in the order I present them to my dad since he likes DC/Marvel/Other to each be lumped together, but make no mistake: this is the last of the three Morrison books to read this week, because this is what comes next for them. A return to their roots - 70s kids way into music and dealing with the weird, girls adventure stories of the kind they apparently grew up reading - this feels like a refinement of their mid/late-00s Vertigo work in the same way they’ve been iterating on their superhero material for decades. The horror is sold excellently, whether by their own efforts or thanks to cowriter Alex Child this is their most fluid, ‘real’-sounding dialogue perhaps ever, and Franquiz with Bonvillain are instantly among their all-time best collaborators, perfectly capturing the shifting tone and character acting necessary to best put Morrison’s big ideas over in a way a number of their collaborators haven’t lived up to over the years (and speaking of the visuals, Jim Campbell does the lord’s work with that lettering trick near the end). Ritesh Babu and Sean Dillon have a lot more to say about the book and how it already acts as a darker, more honest take on your Stranger Things and the like as a commentary on its times, but I’m already loving to see this particular return down to Earth for Morrison and company and I’m glad to hear this is selling really well compared to their previous indie work.

Dead Dog’s Bite #1: This actually came out last week, but Ritesh recommended it so I figured it might be worth a look. A so far intensely low-key missing persons mystery with a touch of surreality around its edges, this already looks to be the best “look! A nine-panel grid! Fancy!” comic since Mister Miracle, really lived-in and emotional for as little happens in this debut. Very curious where it’s going.

Rorschach #6: I continue to like it.

Batman: Urban Legends #1: Glory be, a good Jason Todd comic - at last, you noble stubborn weirdoes living off of like six nonconsecutive panels all these years, you may lay down your burden. Not all you’d necessarily hope from Zdarsky tackling Gotham after what he’s been doing with Daredevil but rock-solid work regardless; the Harley story is fine, Outsiders is a letdown after Thomas’s shockingly good showing for them in Future State but it’s still fine, and the Grifter stuff is fun.

The Joker #1: I thought the advertised ‘a Joker story from Gordon’s POV’ angle was an interesting one even if I was concerned this book would in practice be pure editorial mandate, but in reality? Tynion has managed to pull the wool over DC’s eyes and do a full-on Jim Gordon book (one predicated with him being off the force to make it reasonably comfortable read in 2021) with Joker as the barest of pretexts to get it out the door and selling for as long as he wants to continue it. He even said in interviews that when the book was first pitched to him that his response was that a Joker solo book was a dumb unworkable idea until he had an idea for a ‘different way to approach it’, he knows exactly what he’s doing and I salute him. And it’s a darn good Gordon book even if the Punchline backup is predictably tepid, I’m in the tank for Gotham’s perpetual whipping boy dealing with weird noir international crime with Joker sort of hanging around in the background menacingly to justify the nominal premise.

Wonder Woman #770: This combined with the store still putting it in my pile prompted me to give it a try after all, and whether because something here clicks better or if they’re simply not trying so hard without the pressure of doing a ‘final’ story for Diana, Cloonan and Conrad do in fact do substantially better on the main book than they did with Immortal Wonder Woman. Some fun, some fights, some mythology and intrigue, gorgeous landscapes and generous servings of beefcake from Travis Moore - this isn’t going to be sweeping the Eisners, but this is as enjoyable as a Wonder Woman comic has been in a good long time. My only concern is that the joyousness on display here might dissipate somewhat once Diana fully returns to herself, but in the meantime this was a very pleasant surprise (especially with the the Young Diana backup by Bellaire, Ganucheau, Goode, and Carey).

Superman #29: PKJ’s Superman thus far has been a story of overcoming initial worries of mine - in this case, my concern that he’d have a bad Scott Snyder-ey case of “if you’ve read the interviews you’ve pretty much already heard the dialogue of the comic verbatim”. In practice here most of what he’s had to say about these issues are distilled down really succinctly and poignantly in the midst of a fun little upper-atmosphere adventure portending something grimmer, and while I know it didn’t click with everyone I thought Phil Hester’s work here was a perfect accompaniment. The Tales of Metropolis backup wasn’t nearly as enjoyable, but hints at some interesting worldbuilding I’m hopeful will pay off in the main run.

The Green Lantern Season Two #12: The final Grant Morrison DC comic. One of two anyway, but if the next story I discuss is their broader final (non-Klaus, hopefully) statement on the superhero subgenre and a bridge to what they’re doing next, this is the one that’s about being The Final Grant Morrison DC Comic. A mélange of pretty much all their other DC finales into a shamelessly self-reflective meditation on the limits of what they can accomplish in shared universe storytelling where Green Lantern saves the universe through collective action and then fucks off to do his own thing elsewhere while the kids take over the ongoings. Weird and kinda perfect, and if nothing else this series took Liam Sharp from “really? This dude is drawing the last ever Morrison DC ongoing?” to “HOLY FUCKING SHIT LIAM SHARP”.

(The panel folks blew up over I think can be read multiple ways, but not in a ‘it’s open to interpretation!’ way so much as the storytelling/framing being unclear. I personally read it as ‘this is what neighbor versus neighbor looks like now’ rather than ‘calling someone a TERF or a Nazi is as bad as anything the other side does’, because oldster and out of touch though they may be I can’t see Morrison seriously saying that, especially after coming out.)

Wonder Woman Earth One Volume 3: At long last, after a hideous misfire kicking the series off and a second installment best described as ‘well, at least it wasn’t the first one’, this while not without elements I want to see femme and nonbinary critics discuss critically lives up to what you want to see out of ‘Grant Morrison’s Wonder Woman’. Big utopian fiction breaking the typical boundaries of superhero stories with aplomb in implicit conversation with a ton of their previous work, a bridge from what they’ve done to what they’re doing next, it’s an imperfect (especially with Paquette’s art, which while gorgeous and majestic in the way this story demands really doesn’t living up to the ‘acting’ necessary here in a way thrown into sharp contrast by Franquiz in PVR) but shockingly passionate statement of intent - if the last two volumes felt like Morrison struggling to have something to say with Wonder Woman in the same way they did with Superman and Batman, this feels at the close like them at last finding in her a way to do everything left with the cape and tights crowd they wanted to but couldn’t manage anywhere else under the Big Two umbrella. Odd and lovely, a fine sendoff.

BnHA Chapter 249: Todoroki Taco Night

Previously on BnHA: Nothing happened at all, because the manga was on break last week! Fortunately the anime had finally resumed after a billion years (estimation; exact length of time may be slightly off), so we had that to take the edge off in the meantime. Except we didn’t, because the anime also ended up going on break due to a rugby game or some shit. So that was nice. On a related note, when I die I’d like the Basement arc to lower me into my grave, so it can let me down one last time.

Anyway, Endeavor did some mentoring and gave Shouto and Kacchan a power-up assignment and told Deku to work on Air Force to help him master the fine control he needs for the Bloop. Then Fuyu called a week later and was all “HEY DAD, DINNER, OUR PLACE, TONIGHT, BRING THE KIDS.” And then as previously mentioned, we waited two whole fucking weeks and MY GOD, my body is ready, on to the new chapter we go!

Today on BnHA: Shouto, Katsuki, and Deku are cordially invited to Todosmith Farms for an evening of food and fun! They make it approximately six minutes into dinner before Natsu loses it and exits with more theatrics than a spurned reality TV show contestant. Baku and Deku spend the next hour being all “!!!” at each other back and forth, and whispering about how fucking dramatic the Todorokis are, which fully kills me and is my favorite thing ever to happen in the world. Deku then begins to guide Shouto through his personal healing process like fucking Mufasa booming at Simba from the heavens, and meanwhile Endeavor listens in while quietly kneeling before HIS DEAD SON’S PHOTOGRAPH, IN THE SHRINE THEY BUILT FOR SAID DEAD SON IN HIS BEDROOM, and sorrowfully wishing he could do more for his family. Anyways so I’m in ruins now, but otherwise fine. How are you?

well it’s Thursday morning, and I have just seen the picture of baby white-haired Touya because no one in this fandom knows how to fucking spoiler tag (and that’s on me too for browsing the BnHA tag on a Thursday; I know better, but I was just curious how this new group chat thing was working out), so here are my immediate thoughts

we never actually confirmed that the hair color correlates to their powers, huh. we just assumed. but come to think, there’s no reason why someone couldn’t have mom’s hair but dad’s quirk. it’s all Shouto’s fault for being a perfect 50/50 split and thus making everyone assume that THAT’S JUST HOW IT WORKS. damn you Shouto and your dramatic character design

anyways I tried not to look at the pic for too long -- once I realized what I was looking at, I averted my eyes -- but he does look like Dabi, I think. oh shit guys. it’s really fucking happening

and I also didn’t get a good enough look to determine whether this was a photo of Touya (that Deku or whoever happened to spot while visiting the Todochester Mystery House for the much-hyped dinner) or a flashback image (in which he is just standing really fucking still for some reason and staring directly at the camera), so I guess we’ll see. but anyways, Deku and Kacchan didn’t come all the way down to Todoroki taco night to not have their evening peppered with intricate family drama and reopened wounds and hysterical conspiracy theories, so you had better keep them goddamn entertained! lord knows the Todorokis don’t do small talk. this is literally their only way of spicing things up so their guests don’t die of sheer awkwardness while Endeavor sits in stony silence and Shouto just stuffs his face with soba all night

That's the stage of development my new bodies are always made in -- which is rather lucky, actually, since it means I'm rarely expected to know everything about the worlds I end up in. Quite often, I'll get taken in and cared for because of my "age."

Which is exactly what happened in the First Nav.

The body I'd been given was a B. I won't go into detail on what the As or Bs looked like -- mostly because I couldn't describe them if I wanted to, but I also don't want that to distract you. However, I'll say this: They definitely weren't humanoid.

Since I had arrived as a B, thankfully it was a group of Bs that found me. The Bs didn't have a strict "familial" structure, but lived in groups with between one and five leaders, as many as thirty other adults, and a multitude of children. And, unfortunately, it wasn't uncommon that many of those children were adopted. Because the As, if their "structure" was disrupted, had a tendency to… overreact.

The Bs… "worked" for the As in order to survive. From the moment a B could move around on their own and follow orders, they went to work for a community of As. The As had a much more structured ranking of authority among them. One family would rule over about seven others, all of whom would provide one or more services -- such as food, medical care, and even artistry. Whatever the ruling family desired, they'd find a lower family to supply. In exchange, the ruling family would allow the lower ones the "service" of their Bs.

Now, as far as I could tell, this had started off as a mutual agreement between the two races. Because of their physiology, the Bs could venture into the outside world without fear. But the As couldn't. The First Nav's two ecosystems were not equal in strength. At any moment, the poisonous one threatened to overtake and eradicate the benign. Any "poisonous" creature that happened into a benign environment would be perfectly fine, but the reverse was not true. The As and Bs, as the only fully sentient beings, had established a partnership to help prevent the extinction of the benign ecosystem.

Or, rather… the Bs had decided to help the As out. Since the Bs didn't require the As help in return and, in fact, the As didn't have much to offer.

Except.

Except for the promise of an "easy life." Which the Bs became addicted to.

In exchange for having basically every one of their needs cared for (housing, food, even entertainment), the Bs rid the As immediate surroundings of anything and everything poisonous -- cleaning their homes, tending their gardens and fields, and even serving as guards on the rare occasions any As dared to travel. By the time they realized anything was wrong, they didn't know of any other way to live. And the As refused to teach them. (Trades were heavily guarded family secrets, after all!)

A few Bs got around that rule, though. It was rare, but crossbreeding was possible between As and Bs. These Hybrids would usually have the benefit of being able to survive in poisonous environments without being poisonous themselves; however, if they bred with either an A or B, the trait of the other race would disappear. Of course, given the interruption they caused to their hierarchy, the As weren't fond of the Hybrids. But their strict societal structure didn't allow for much disclusion of them.

Reluctantly, some Bs were allowed more deeply into the As' society. This was where I had found myself.

I wasn't blood related, but this only barely mattered to the younger As of the family. Their trade was in making furniture and the like, so my musical talents were a treat for them. One they didn't have to pay for. That, plus my angelic aura… They took a liking to me. All the younger As did, even ones from other families.

And… I decided to take advantage of that.

I had failed in overcoming the prejudice in Illunira, but in this new dimension… Maybe it would be only one community, but it could grow from there! So I taught these young As about the Bs -- taught them to see past their society's rigid structures into actual interpersonal relationships. And surprisingly… it worked!

This wasn't the first time I'd tried this. And my attempts usually failed. In fact… they seemed to always fail.

I struggled many nights… to remember times I'd succeeded… and sometimes, I-... I just couldn't… So, to see these kids -- so incompatible to each other that they could barely even touch one another… playing and working together?

It was bliss. I'd… actually helped someone…!

I'd chosen a world… and it had worked…!

…

But OF COURSE it didn't last!

The older As of the community found out. The younger As had assured me nothing would come of them knowing. They didn't think we were breaking any actual rules. … They'd forgotten that the ruling family made the rules. And could change them.

They said our little group threatened to disrupt the "harmony" of the community -- that disrupting the structure of authority put all As at risk. Something about the Bs "not doing their jobs anymore" because other professions would be "too tempting" if they were options.

Regardless of their faulty reasonings, they decided our group was a threat. So they destroyed us.

More than that, they made examples of us -- to any children that hadn't joined our group!

They killed them… All of them… … Every last child…

They made a SPECTACLE of it!

I just about lost my mind. If I hadn't been restrained, I'm sure I'd have killed some of those As.

… But I was restrained. So I could do nothing.

As the "leader" of the group (I was no such thing, only its founder, but as if they would ever have believed me), they saved me for last. They tortured me first, then killed me.

But I barely registered it.

The thing about the summarized memories I get left with- is that they work like normal memories. As in, the more impactful something is, the more easily it's remembered. It has little to do with the amount of time something took to happen. And most of my summarized memories at that point in my travels… They weren't pleasant.

Dimensions after dimensions seemed to be filled with suffering- -Oh, don't misunderstand, though! There were plenty of happy memories too! It's just…

With all of Infinity at my fingertips -- infinite options, infinite possibilities… Surely… I could find an infinite number of paradises…

Day nine: mighty fine!

My dearest Giggles,

I've been talking to Quinn about the logistics of backpacking; I'm starting to walk away from our conversations wanting to live from what I can carry, ultimately retreating to a cabin in the woods I build and sustain, farming all of my own food. For now, though, I still dream of a kitchen where I can save food scraps.

I am beyond proud you've found a calling worthy of your full ambition. I have no doubt that you'll be fighting against any and every injustice with the force of the Gonzales's before you. Survival is in your bloodline. You are fighting a worthwhile battle, and you are making those who care about you infinitely proud. You are worthy of this life, and every kindness it brings you. Just reading the passion and reverence you have for what you're doing is enough to envy your discovery of a lifelong mission. I can only hope to dedicate my life to a pursuit of equal virtue.

I don't feel particularly called to this island. I'm here now, but as much as I foresee, this trip is the extent of my connection to this land. We visited a cliff face again, but there was a lighthouse and an abandoned lighthouse keeper's house. It was filled with trash. Acres of this untouched coastal land was sold to a millionaire who will strip it of the boulders we named measured, and calculated, and use the land to develop houses. This is the last year the public can visit the park. He will most likely demolish the lighthouse which has stood since 1910. While surveying the boulders, we found that where there were overhangs was carved into the rock, there were piles of garbage. We hypothesized these were the remnants of someone living there who was evicted, and perhaps jailed for squatting, when the sale went through.

I feel guilty for learning this island's beauty, knowing I most likely won't return to right the wrongs I have seen. I’ve been thinking of the impacts of travel, and have justified it when traveling ethically or when using it for a greater scheme of justice, but I feel like I’ve used it for personal growth and that feels filthy when considering what I could be doing locally, affecting change closer to home.

There will always be someone who wants to dam the river. There will always be another beer bottle in the sand. There will always be the mark of humanity on this world.

My English teacher in hs spoke of perceived good vs actual good. He used his grocer-boy day as a parable; the same older lady would come in to recycle her collection of plastic bags once a month, placing them in the cardboard bins at the front of the store. She didn’t know that the end of each day, those bins were emptied into the dumpster, joining the reffuse on its path to burial. Makes me think of an art piece I saw a while back by Howardeena Pindell; The most common theme throughout her later works were focused on how violence can be non-confrontational. It is violent to dehumanize someone; to take away what makes them a function of society, and I fear that more than I fear physical violence. Someone in a tower can declare those beneath his footing to be lesser, and who are we to disagree when we have no concept of what it means to be in the tower?

It's inevitable, but it makes me think: where will I be in the revolution?

We are on our own for dinners, but rather than eat alone, some groups have decided to cook large meals for whoever wants to come over, and rotate the chore of hosting/cooking. I'm still on my mission of infiltrating the geology majors, and I've found some mathematics/Creative writing double majors, and LEMME TELL YA, that has made this so much easier! I plan on being all their besties before the week is up, I'll keep you posted.

Six days until I can hold an Angel

Baby —

I saw so many birds today!!! I got all muddy because I ran after a bird and tripped but it was worth it to come within a few yards of a great blue heron, binoculars pressed into my sunglasses and jaw hanging wide open. I’m convinced I’m turning into an old man with these old man hobbies like archery and whittling and NOW birding. Yikes hope you’ll still date me when I inevitably suggest going square dancing.

Most of my day was spent in travel from Tickfaw State Park to Cocodrie on the edge of Louisiana’s torn, boot-shaped state border into the sea. Turns out I’m reaaally good at falling asleep in cars.

Your paragraph about me finding my passion added kindling to the campfire you occupy in my heart. I’ve never had anyone understand me so well and actively seek to know me — to want to. I’ve never had anyone be proud of me like you are. I’ve never met anyone like you at all. And as much as that scares me, I’m also — I’m glad that you’re mine.

I’m sorry about your Bonaire Realizations. It’s a real shame about that developer on the park lands and the garbage that seems to be everywhere, even at home.

(A reflection)

We have to move past grief in order to defend our homes, our coastal lands, our culture, our people. I cope with this eco-grief by turning my fear into service. I find comfort from my despair in learning how to best serve others, how to protect the most vulnerable populations, how to communicate and find loopholes through policy to take care of people.

Your grief reminds me of something Elizabeth Rush once said in her book, “Rising.” She invoked James Baldwin and related the fight against racism to the fight against climate change:

“I am done dreaming the earth undrowned; it is no longer a useful skill… ‘Guilt is a luxury that we can no longer afford,” he continues. ‘I know you didn’t do it, and I didn’t do it either, but I am responsible for it because I am… a citizen of this country and you are responsible for it, too, for the very same reason.’”

It is perfectly normal and okay to grieve for the area you inhabit now, to feel like you’re not doing enough to solve the crises before you, to be mad at yourself for not being more committed to Bonaire. But as you rightfully criticize your environment and mental framework, please remember that in your scholastic work, you are serving.

You are learning the names of people and places and experiences and sharing those stories with others who otherwise would never have seen that island. It may not be perfect, but I see your willingness to learn and grow and reflect and question as cultural preservation, as resistance against the forces that seek to discourage our endeavors by listing mounting problems, as an act of great art and struggle. Let yourself sit with this discomfort and move past grief into service.

I hope that you can begin to find peace this way, regardless of how many rivers are dammed or parks developed. We have a responsibility to ourselves and to others to do justice, and grief is a robber in the night that takes potential from us. Think of Greta Thunberg, who was once someone who grieved deeply and hid her eating disorder, staying home and not talking to anyone. And then she started striking on Fridays. And now she gives lectures around the world: “No person is too small to make a difference.” She is no different from you or me.

Seek the opportunity to do justice from your learning experiences. You wouldn’t believe the number of times I’ve applied Everglades knowledge to problems in our Mississippi River system or the coastal land loss in Louisiana without even meaning to. Everywhere is an opportunity to learn and to serve others. That work is Everything. You are and always have been Enough.

Nevra has known from a young age (in vampire years) that it’s not only girls he’s attracted to. And once upon a time, he concealed this fact by passing himself off as an (extremely) healthy heterosexual. Because within his conservative clan, where status is currency and reputation means everything, a romance between men is considered an irresponsible and fruitless dalliance. At best. And the participants better shape up soon if they wish to stay in the family.

It wasn’t until he and Karenn moved to cosmopolitan El for work that it finally dawned on Nevra that here, he doesn’t have to give a damn about what his clan thinks. In fact, returning home is optional. And once Karenn was on board with the idea that they would stay in El for good, the makeover began. Nevra is a proud, fiery man with a raging sex drive, and after decades of following the rules imposed on him, he was ready to reprogram the whole game. And have the time of his life doing it. 

Within a few years, he sets new standards of what a swinging bisexual looks like in El: dressing to the nines in tight pants and a muscle shirt that shows off his assets to all eyes, and openly pursuing both female and male partners. And to many people’s consternation, he has no shortage of admirers from across the gender and sexuality spectrum. Which he will casually remind others about. It’s good to be the king.

It’s not all fun and games for this stud though. One reason why he has a reputation for bouncing across relationships is because many longer-term partners, even in El, find it hard to accept that he’s equally partial to men as to women. Over the past several years, Nevra has been through many strange scenes in which his partners insist he’s either a.) actually gay, b.) actually straight, or c.) bound to leave them for someone of the opposite gender. The real answer, in Nevra’s opinion, is d.) sex is sex, but a connection is what clinches the deal. And he can forge a connection on either side of the gender divide, which just makes life more interesting.

Unfortunately, few people share his level of open-mindedness. And since Nevra dislikes ongoing drama in a relationship, he has developed a very simple method of ‘screening for major mistakes’ after his first night with someone new: if his partner keeps throwing a hissy-fit at his jokes about getting checked out by the opposite gender, then they’ll go their separate ways very soon. He won’t put out if they won’t trust him.

Ezarel: The Reluctant Husband      

There’s one joke that Ezarel likes to make about himself that isn’t a lie: he’s perfectly fine without sex. For as long as he can remember, he has never been turned on by naked specimens of any gender. And receiving a kiss or cuddle from others tends to inspire a restraining order rather than raging desire. Seriously, how rude can people get?

Throughout his tender adolescent years, Ezarel loved to exploit his ice cube-cool to show-up his randier male peers. Like walking up to female lab partners with perilous cleavages in view, and telling them with the driest face that they had been blatantly mispronouncing a name for the past several minutes, but he’ll give them a quick lesson to keep them from embarrassing themselves in the future; they can thank him later. General result: every one of his peers hated him on some level, but their primary weapons of innuendo, sex appeal, and sexual put-downs all failed against him. Ezarel was untouchable, literally. And he would tell them with a smug grin that he was simply the evolved one of their generation.

The fun came to end when Ezarel hit his early twenties (in elven years) and finally researched the persistent phenomenon of his ‘inner monk’. At first, he breathed a huge sigh of relief at knowing that he isn’t socially or hormonally impaired, and that his sexuality simply rests on the tamest end of the spectrum. Then he started swearing at how that’s not about to fix his problems for the immediate future. Because as a noble at the prime of his life, he has certain, unavoidable duties to fulfill: like carrying on the family line. Fantastic: now sex is going to be his nightly chore for the next few years at least. The gods have a terrible sense of humor.

So nowadays, Ezarel is more low-key on flaunting his asexuality: it’s a mixed blessing for him. While he’s safely immune to the battle of the sexes, and has no shortage jokes of being one rung up the evolutionary ladder, he just can’t feel the same excitement as some when ‘performing as a husband’ (he’s only left with supreme awkwardness). Worse still, even close acquaintances are prone to misinterpreting what they see as his ‘frigidity’. Like how his asexuality equates to an inability to love. Each time, Ezarel will be quick to correct them: he does have a heart, thank you very much, whereas some people with full libidos are proven to have no empathy. And there is such a phenomenon as non-sexual affection. They’ll all find out when they pass middle age.  

Valkyon: One Foot Out of the Closet

Valkyon never grew up with an adult role-model to take cues from, or who would have furnished him with a road-map on where his ‘urges’ should take him. So it wasn’t until he was in his late teens that he started to realize he has less common tastes than the norm. As in, his eyes are saved quite strictly for fellow men. That was also when Valkyon realized the one benefit of his self-sufficient upbringing: it’s up to him alone to decide how to react to this news. And he reacted with his usual calm, no-nonsense logic: his sexuality is just another harmless quirk of his mental programming; an occurrence of nature that has no bearing on his reproductive capacity or cognitive health. Many species of Familiars too see their share of homosexual relations, with no ill effects on individuals or the species itself. So reacting negatively will be like cursing himself for hitting six feet in height at sixteen: nonsensical.  

Unfortunately, there seems to be a number of nonsensical figures for most of Valkyon’s life. Several of the oldest scars that crisscross his body came from incidents when neighbors, colleagues, and barracks-mates heard about his preferred type of bed partner, and took offense. Though this should be said: the fact that Valkyon is the one left standing every time proves that they’re definitely not that smart. And to his chagrin, each time he survives only seems to worsen his reputation. Now that is just paradoxical. 

It wasn’t until several months after moving to El that Valkyon started to notice the total reduction in the number of sharp glares and sharper whispers at his back. And that it correlated with the number of same-sex couples openly walking on the street and ordering drinks for each other at bars. So. It seems he might not need to walk around in as much armor here on a regular day. Maybe.  

Despite the more tolerant environment in El and his legendary thick skin, those rough early years left their mark (internally) on Valkyon. Nowadays, he still flash-freezes discussions on his private life, avoids dating, and finds it hard to drop the poker face and physician’s mindset he perfected when looking at a naked body, male or female. Valkyon knows who he is and sees no reason to apologize for it, but he just can’t be sure that there isn’t another idiot somewhere nearby, waiting to pay him unusual scrutiny for his preferences. And has relatives ready to fill his mail box with hospital bills in three weeks’ time.  

But. If there’s one bit of progress he’s making on coming out in El, it’s this: he doesn’t wear shirts anymore.

Nevra & Valkyon

Not many people know that they are in fact an item. Valkyon makes absolutely no reaction when Nevra turns his charms on every other pretty face that walks into the building. But little do outsiders know that this is a mutually-beneficial fit: Valkyon doesn’t have a jealous bone in his body and hates attracting attention on his private life, while Nevra is both protective of Valkyon and has a cuckolding kink can’t resist strutting before other people, his lover included. So they’ll keep up this con before the public eye to deflect attention on their relationship… until people notice that they share the exact same mailing address. For the last few years.

There’s no question that Nevra will occupy the more dominant role in this relationship. He’s the more experienced man by far when it comes to sex, romance, and the nitty-gritty of social and emotional maneuvering. Not to mention that he’s at least three times the bossy extrovert Valkyon is. Where does it say that it’s the big, burly guys who should top anyway…? Fortunately, cool-as-a-cucumber Valkyon is perfectly all right with taking the back seat. It’s just not his style to waltz his partner into the bedroom or arrange candlelit dates. And the back seat is the best place to catch his high-flying lover whenever life knocks all the hot air out of him.

Nevra & Ezarel  

It takes a while for Nevra to understand that Ezarel’s toxic sarcasm and ‘untouched, and uncaring’ persona isn’t just a front. And his initial reaction is this: what a tragedy! How can any adult live without sex?! The elf’s counter-reaction is this: I’m the evolved one.

Fortunately, Nevra learns quickly to keep his hands to himself, Ezarel stops threatening to sue him, and they settle for a purely cerebral/emotional connection instead. And that’s when the sparks finally begin to fly: for all their differences, they’re evenly matched when it comes to snark.

Foreplay for them now consists of a friendly argument, a lightning-round volley of wisecracks, and ending with one of them declaring that he hates the other. With no small smile. And sometimes, if Ezarel is in the right mood, he’ll let Nevra spoon him on the couch while he reads. Until the vampire stirs from his nap, gives him a squeeze, and starts joking about how enticing he smells. Which is when the former learns again just how sharp elven elbows are.  

It comes as a surprise to no one that Nevra is the ‘Romantic One’ of the pair: always willing to initiate joke advances and more serious invitations to visit new places or try new activities, when he’s not smoothing over arguments that fall a little past the friendly line. Ezarel, naturally, is the ‘Skeptical Object of Desire’: never without a pithy quip or quirky joke to deflect Nevra’s advances. Though now and again, he succumbs to little shows of affection: like smiling at Nevra when he falls asleep on the couch before squirming out of his arms. And then painting a moustache on his face.

Ezarel & Valkyon

It’s not going to happen.

Valkyon is a resilient guy and not someone who enjoys placing demands on his partner, but he does have a few standards all the same. Like 1.) his beau has to be someone who doesn’t spend his waking life on the run from his feelings and personal problems. And 2.) he has to work out regularly. Valkyon may have a decent platonic history with Ezarel, but he draws the line on being the elf’s lover and babysitter around the clock. Man up, Ez, for crying out loud.

Ezarel in turn is happy to dodge the crossbow bolt that comes with the idea of dating Valkyon. Sure, he’s a solid friend, a non-volatile target for his pranks, and actually one of the formative influences of his (now infamous) sense of humor. But the man still acts like he’s made of clockwork most hours of the day. Who’ll wind up to begin each morning with a blunt fifteen-word lecture on why it’s a good idea to grow up and exercise regularly. Who does Valkyon think he is? His father? Uh, wait a minute…  

So, they’ll be happy just to meet up for drinks every weekend or so. With Nevra sitting in between them as a referee and convenient social buffer. Keeping that vampire in their gang is good for something.

“[T]he powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial,” White House aide Stephen Miller assured the nation on February 12, “and will not be questioned.”

Miller has proved a singularly bad prophet. Donald Trump’s asserted powers—over immigration, over federal funding for “sanctuary cities,” and over the U.S. military—are receiving a very skeptical look from the federal judiciary. In the latest iteration of the “travel ban” case, the Ninth Circuit on Friday held that the third version of the ban violates the Immigration and Nationality Act. The Supreme Court had earlier signaled its unease with court-ordered injunctions against the ban; whether in response or not, the court of appeals has now offered the court a way to strike down the ban without imposing any real limit on federal power over immigration—while making clear that presidential power is not nearly as broad as Trump and Miller think it is.

Let’s quickly review the bidding: on January 27, Trump issued the first version of the “travel ban,” which barred entry into the United States of anyone from a set of predominantly Muslim countries; that version, which read as if it had been drafted by monkeys with Selectrics, was enjoined almost at once by federal courts on both coasts. The administration on March 6 replaced it with version 2.0, which, though more literate, was also immediately enjoined by judges in Hawaii and Maryland. Two courts of appeals upheld those injunctions; the Supreme Court agreed to hear the government’s appeal of those rulings, while narrowing the injunctions granted below. However, the government on September 24 issued the current ban—version 3.0; the Supreme Court dismissed the earlier appeals as moot. The same two courts enjoined 3.0. The government appealed those rulings to the Fourth and Ninth Circuits. During that appeal, the Supreme Court agreed to lift the injunctions altogether pending appeal.

Oral argument before the lower courts took place in the first week in December; the Fourth Circuit has not released its decision, but on Friday, the Ninth Circuit affirmed the trial court’s decision striking down the ban.

Let’s start with what the Ninth Circuit opinion isn’t—it is not a judgment that the administration’s latest order is a “Muslim ban.” It is not based on President’s Trump’s bigoted rhetoric, either as a candidate or after taking office. It does not find  that the ban covertly discriminates by religion. It does not second-guess the executive’s factual decisions about national security. And it is not a challenge to the basic doctrine of immigration law—that Congress has “plenary power” to limit immigration on any basis it chooses.

In effect, the opinion turns the government’s claim of sweeping power back on itself. It assumes the government does have sweeping power to exclude aliens: “The Constitution gives Congress primary, if not exclusive, power to set immigration policy.” That may even include the power to discriminate by religion, nationality, or race. But even if that power exists,  the president can’t just grab it by executive order. For that reason, courts must assess whether any presidential action conforms to “the [Immigration and Nationality Act]’s finely reticulated regulatory scheme.”

The government’s argument is that one section of the Act, § 1182(f), gives the president virtually unlimited authority to ban any group of immigrants:

Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may  ... for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.

The court does not question the statute, but it denies that the Travel Bans conform to it: first, it argues, the president did not make any legally significant “finding” that the entry of travelers under 3.0 would be “detrimental” to U.S. interests; second, Trump did not “suspend” entry, but imposed an indefinite ban; third, Trump issued the ban to circumvent, not implement, the system of terrorist screening Congress had dictated; and, fourth, Congress in a separate statute has explicitly forbidden the executive to discriminate (in issuing immigrant visas at least) on the basis on nationality.  

Here is the heart of the argument. The court reasons that Congress, elsewhere in § 1182, set out permitted ways for the executive to exclude possible terrorists and protect the U.S. when foreign countries don't provide information the U.S. needs to screen applicants. The statute provides nine different specific security-related grounds for exclusion, including a provision barring an alien “who has engaged in a terrorist activity.” The statute also has sections governing countries that don’t share information needed to assess visa applications. These provisions are the choices Congress made in this area. It would make little sense, the opinion suggests, to read 1182(f) as wiping them out by giving the president the power to suspend entry of any immigrants anywhere anytime because—well— because terrorism is bad or information is good.

[T]he President cannot effectively abrogate existing immigration law while purporting to merely strengthen it; the cure cannot be worse than the disease. Here, the President has  ... overridden Congress’s legislative responses to the same concerns the Proclamation aims to address. The Executive cannot without assent of Congress supplant its statutory scheme with one stroke of a presidential pen.

In other words, Congress has the power to rewrite the law; Donald Trump does not. That is the basic rule called “separation of powers.” The opinion cites an earlier Supreme Court opinion—by potential swing vote Anthony Kennedy—that the separation must be observed “even when the executive actions respond to ... issues that potentially place the country’s ‘Constitution and its survival in peril’” because “’[c]oncentration of power in the hands of a single branch is a threat to liberty.’”

Finally, the court asks whether there some “inherent” presidential power in the immigration area, or in national security generally, that would permit Trump to act without any statutory power at all. “We conclude that the President lacks independent constitutional authority to issue the Proclamation, as control over the entry of aliens is a power within the exclusive province of Congress,” it says.

The opinion thus offers the Supreme Court a chance to reject 3.0 without limiting government power over immigration—indeed, without even limiting the president’s power to act in a genuine emergency: “we again need not, and do not, decide whether the President may be able to suspend entry pursuant to his constitutional authority under any circumstances (such as in times of war or national emergency), as the Proclamation was issued under no such exceptional circumstances.”

The opinion offers the Supreme Court An off-ramp from the road to a major constitutional ruling; whether the justices will take it is a different question. Appeals courts regularly tee up appetizing-seeming rationales, and the Supreme Court regularly ignores them. In addition, some of the lower court’s statutory arguments are a bit facile, particularly its rejection of 3.0’s “findings” as inadequate. But the opinion does not question federal power to exclude aliens, and indeed reaffirms it. It pointedly observes that, like its predecessors, Travel Ban 3.0  “cites to no exigencies, national or otherwise, and does not respond to a situation Congress would be ill-equipped to address.”

In other words, a travel ban is perfectly possible, and the administration is always free to ask Congress for one. Had it done so in January, Congress might have enacted one by now. The Supreme Court may be concerned that a decision against the government in this case may weaken the nation; the Ninth Circuit opinion suggests a way to avoid doing so—while still rejecting Trump’s demand for personal powers that “will not be questioned.”
