AU where Ryan was in Nooshy’s position + How to subtly write in a love story.
I should start this off with saying that I love Nooshy! She’s one of my favourite characters in the franchise. She’s amazing! This is just an AU inspired by La'Ron Readus on Youtube (his video on Johnny and Ryan is really good by the way). This AU is in no way negative towards Nooshy and in it she would be a central character in Sing 3.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
To begin, start with some main changes mainly including more interactions starting off at the first scene together.
When Johnny first enters the class, Ryan is seen looking at him and approaching him when Buster leaves, seeming to be about to introduce himself.
Ryan is seen wincing when Klaus corrects Johnny, referencing that he knows that it hurts and feels bad for him.
Ryan is shown reaching to help Johnny up when he falls, Klaus hits his hand away and refuses to let him help, Ryan seems worried and upset about what is happening.
When Johnny has his panic attack, Ryan follows him outside, clearly looking for him and crouches next to him when he finds him while looking extremely worried and puts his hand on Johnny’s back as the screen fades to black.
When Johnny walks out of the skate shop, he walks up to Ryan who was leaning on the wall next to the doors who smiles at him and offers for them to go get something to eat, Johnny smiles and agrees and Ryan swings an arm over his shoulder as they walk.
Cut to the dinner scene, light teasing about the show and dancing in general, Ryan reassures him that he is doing fine and has talent, light flirting with the singing scene and a waitress compliments on them on being a cute couple, both kinda panicking but Ryan pushes past it and suggests them practicing together, Johnny agreeing eagerly.
Klaus gets really angry at the idea of Johnny and Ryan training together in private, even though Ryan points out that he’s done something like this before and it would only benefit them in the long run, Klaus finally agrees but demands to talk to Ryan alone, Ryan agrees, looking scared but tells Johnny it’s alright and to head to the practice space.
Cut to Johnny falling while doing the routine, Ryan appears behind him, laughing under his breath, and they begin practicing.
R: *Snort of Laughter* Maybe let’s wait to pull out those moves pretty boy.
J: Sorry.
R: Don’t apologize, you’re doing really good!
J: *Raises Eyebrows*
R: Seriously! You’re doing better than I would be if I just started.
J: That’s not how Klaus sees it.
R: Well, he’s wrong. You’re really talented Johnny, we just have to build up your confidence and you’ll be a pro in no time!
J: Really?
R: I promise, come on! Let’s start with this…
Training montage but intertwined with scenes of the two seeming to just be hanging out and practice scenes where the two start to seem overly touchy and as the scenes go on they’re shown closer and closer together, final scene being them doing it correctly as a show up to Klaus, ending with them hugging and seeming like there’s a kind of tension, and Klaus glares at them and mutters “you traitor” at Ryan as the class congratulates them (this way Klaus attacking Johnny and Ryan onstage doesn’t seem to come out of nowhere as we now know he’s resentful).
When the group meets Calloway, Ryan grabs Johnny's arm when Clay opens the door. Ryan is crouched next to Crawly when she wakes up, moving a cloth off her head hinting that he acted as a medic when she passed out. Ryan is standing next to Johnny when the tv interview is playing, puts his hand on his back as if trying to comfort him. When the bad guys show up at the door, Ryan jumps and grabs Johnny's hand which Johnny squeezes back. Shares confused and scared look with Johnny when Buster says they’re going to jump but is seen helping Meena jump as Johnny helps Rosita.
Johnny and Ryan run next to each other in the forest area and jump over the railing to the street in sync.
When Buster’s clearance card declines at the set, Ryan reaches past him “Here, let me try…” and uses Klaus’s card with a wink to Johnny when the door opens, “looks like he’s helpful after all” at which Johnny smiles and laughs as they duck inside and a few of the others pat him on the back.
Ryan calls the other dancers to set, them running up to him when they arrive, treating Ryan as troupe leader immediately with Johnny smiling at him from the sidelines.
Johnny apparently introduces Ryan to Marcus in the background of a scene with him standing between the two as they shake hands, Marcus has an eyebrow raised and Ryan looks nervous.
When Klaus sabotages the scene by attacking both boys when they’re on stage, both try to protect each other from his abuse, especially targeting Ryan for “betraying him” and the troupe. Marcus is shown to be being held back by Stan saying “He’s eighteen Markie, give him a minute to handle it. We’ll deal with it later.”
When they finally beat Klaus, the two raise their hands impulsively as if to declare victors in a show of unity, causing the audience to burst into cheers. Klaus slinks off in defeat and Marcus and Stan are about to follow him until Barry alerts them of Crystal’s arrival. Johnny and Ryan quickly separate, blushing and looking awkward.
Ryan and Johnny are in the background backstage standing next to each other, shoulders brushing.
Johnny and Ryan both try to grab Buster when Crystal grabs him but miss.
When Rosita rescues Buster, Johnny and Ryan kiss quickly in excitement and immediately share a shocked but happy look before hurrying to check if Buster’s okay.
On the bus, there are other dancers in the spare seats, Rosita and Norman are asleep with their kids, and Ryan is cuddled up asleep on Johnny’s shoulder with one earbud while Johnny appears to be resting with his head on top of Ryan’s and the other earbud in but he raises his head when he waves to his dad from the window before putting his head back and closing his eyes.
When the bus stops, Ryan and Johnny are standing next to each other with Ryan holding a hand out like he was reassuring the other dancers.
When the Majestic news is announced, Johnny glances over at Ryan to make sure he’s okay with it and Ryan nods after glancing back at the other dancers who nod. At Clay’s acceptance, the two hug excitedly and Johnny kisses Ryan on the cheek.
When the group is walking onto set, Ryan and Johnny are shown holding hands and catching their staffs in sync when they are tossed to them by another dancer.
With this AU, it’s never explicitly stated that the two are a couple (you could even remove the kisses if you want) but it is clear that they are much closer than just friends as they are willing to risk a lot for each other and even have a meeting between a partner and a parent scene that would be indicative of a relationship. And that, Illumination, is how you subtly write in a love story without making it a main or forced feeling plot point.

If Johnny and Ryan had met when they were kids - maybe Ryan's family living in/close to the town Johny lives in, before moving to the big city - Or an AU where Ryan is a part of Sing 1, how would you imagine that playing out? Any headcanons?
Oooooo, great question! I'm gonna split these two up between your two asks since they're about the same two topics, so that I can go more in depth on each one. This is going into if they met when they were kids, I hope you enjoy!
---------------------------------------
In this au, Ryan and his family would have moved to Calatonia right after his youngest sister was born since she was sick to be near a better hospital. Ryan was 14 and while he was offered to stay in Klaus’s troupe and live at the dorms, he ultimately decided that his moms and sisters needed him there.
Since they probably moved in the middle of the year as well as Ryan spending his free time helping his moms with Amy so they could be at the hospital, Ryan was a bit of a social outcast.
Which only really helped him meet Johnny faster, as they were paired together for class projects since well, no one else would pair with them. Because of that, the two started hanging out and actually becoming friends, eventually even spending time together outside school.
Ryan definitely caught on to the gang pretty fast (literally one trip to the Taylor’s apartment and he knew) and confronted Johnny about it, sparking their first fight. But once he realized why they were stealing and that Johnny didn’t actually want to be involved, they patched things up decently quickly.
After that, they were pretty much inseparable, even as Ryan got more popular in school over the next few years. Ryan was the only one Johnny told about his love of singing and Johnny was the only one Ryan felt confident in telling about his regrets of leaving dance, even if it was what was good for his family at the time.
They continue to be each other’s entire support system up until Sing 1, with their only really arguments about Johnny’s increasing involvement in the gang. Ryan calls Johnny the moment he hears about the singing competition to encourage him to try out and even goes with him to the auditions. When the gang gets arrested, Ryan shows up at the garage with scallion pancakes and custard bao buns, for once doesn’t argue with him about the gang, and just helps him pack a bag so he can come stay with his family.
Ryan also would tag along to the theatre last minute remodel and help, along with bringing food for the performers (his mom’s idea). He also helped Eddie work backstage during the show and comforted Johnny when he was clearly upset (we could also have a shielding scene from Ash’s spikes here). Ryan’s visibly happy when he notices Johnny reuniting with his dad and he’s also in the ending photo at the new theatre.
I think that sometime within the year in between the two movies, Ryan would have gone back to Redshore on his own and eventually gotten his role back in Klaus’s troupe in time for Sing 2. He does keep his troupe’s involvement with the show a secret until Johnny shows up to class however, surprising him with an excited hug.
During the course of Sing 2, we would actually see Ryan fighting Klaus’s treatment of Johnny on screen (not that he didn’t out of this au, we just didn’t see it). This would lead to a series of escalating arguments between the two during classes and when Johnny had his panic attack, Ryan actually quit and went to comfort him instead of doing what Klaus wanted him to. They work with Nooshy together and also do the final performance together as both of them against Klaus this time. We also see Marcus greeting him with a clap on the shoulder and him being treated as a member of the family as well.
I wouldn’t really do anything except hinting at a Rynny plot line til the second movie mainly so we could see character growth and relationships a bit easier in Sing 1. However, in Sing 2 we can easily add in the two spending time together along with more flirty interactions. During the rest of the performances, Ryan and Johnny can be seen holding hands off stage, and seem flustered when Nooshy apparently points it out but don’t stop. Ryan is also asleep with his head on Johnny’s shoulder on the bus back to Calatonia, and we see Johnny smiling at him softly.
---------------------------------------
TL,DR: Ryan and Johnny were each other’s support systems and Ryan essentially served as Johnny’s version of Eddie in Sing 1. In Sing 2, we get to see a lot more development in their relationship and a potential ending alluding to them being a couple.
I’m sorry if this got off track or is hard to follow, I’ll write it out more soon. I hope you enjoyed! Thank you for the ask! - <3 Gooseless

Okay, so based on my last ask: remember in Sing 1 when Ash's spikes starts flying off while she's rocking Set It Free? And Johnny doesn't even react to it because he's sad? (I feel so bad for Johnny, but I can't help but find that scene slightly funny for some reason)
I can't help but imagine that scene now with Ryan trying to comfort Johnny and has to duck down to avoid them - with Johnny still not reacting.
(Though considering Ryan's personality he'd probably try to cover Johnny slightly or something? In that case I don't know whether Johnny reacts or stays deeply in thought by himself still)
Sorry this is random 😂😅
OK, I LOVE THIS IDEA!!! The whole idea of Ryan being in Sing 1 is absolutely amazing and I love it but the pure opportunities for this scene alone is just ✨perfection✨. I'm gonna have to further write this out (I'll tag you in the full written out one if you want)! I hope you enjoy tho! - <3 Gooseless
------------------------------------
Ok so, this would start with the singing competition becoming a talent competition (probably to get more participants). And since in this Ryan joins the main cast, we of course get a pan over in the beginning showing his day to day life. I imagine he's on a phone call standing outside an agency of some kind (implied that it's a dance company by his outfit). We only get to hear his side of the conversation (though we can hear muffled noises of voices) but he seems exasperated and a bit worried.
R: Mom, I'm fine I swear. I'm at an audition now.
R: No, it's not for one of its associated companies. I double checked.
R: Manman, not you too. I'm fine! I can handle myself!
R: Yes I'll be home in time for my classes, I just need to fit in a few more jobs first.
*a worker appear with a clip board, looks around, calls the number on Ryan's shirt*
R: Here! Look, moms, I gotta go, love you.
*ryan hangs up the phone and heads into a room behind the worker*
The next time we see Ryan is when the flyers are spreading around, he's walking on a sidewalk, texting on his phone until a flyer on the ground catches his eye. He picks it up and immediately starts grinning, giving a little bounce of excitement.
At auditions, Ryan is in the dance category, competing as a soloist. I think his audition song would be Take Me To Church by Hozier (mainly because I do want him to dance to something slower in comparison to the final song). Mrs. Crawly and Buster both seem really impressed by this and and smiling and nodding along at the end, Mrs. Crawly even seeming to be crying a bit.
Ryan is picked first draft unlike Johnny when it comes to the selection, however he is the last one named. We can see him watching the singers being picked from the side, clapping when the final selection is announced.
The next time we see him is when they're being assigned their rehearsal areas and given performance recommendation lists. He's next to Johnny, mentioning that he's dances modern, contemporary, and lyrical, not ballet as Buster apparently recommended. He shares a frustrated look with Johnny when the man brushes off their concerns before heading off to his rehearsal space.
When the power cuts, Ryan appears with the rest of the group at the bottom of the stairs, looking around like everyone else. He voices his agreement with the confusion on how they're supposed to practice if they can't see, and he and Johnny shrug at each other before returning to practice, Ryan accepting the glow stick Gunter offers him with a "Thank you".
When Meena walks through, we see Ryan doing a spin in his rehearsal space.
During the showing of what the groups lives are like, we see Ryan returning to what appears to be an empty and cramped hotel room, immediately opening his phone, allowing the audience to see a picture of him with an older tigeress and lioness, along with two liger cubs, before he clicks out of the photo app and to a contact labeled mom. Again, we get to hear his conversation from his end (though we can hear muffled noises of voices) and his motivations are revealed. He's trying to make it on his own as a dancer as well as help his family financially.
R: Hey mom!
R: Yeah, I'm okay, just missed you guys. How are the girls?
R: *laughs* That's my Ames alright! And Bella? How's she feeling?
R: That's a bit better at least! I'm sure she'll be back to normal in no time. But mom, you're not gonna believe this.
R: Yeah, I got a gig! My first solo gig! It's a talent competition and the prize is $100,000 mom!
R: No, I'm not kidding! We could pay off rent and Bella's stuff and manman's loans and everything!
*the scene goes in to the life of the next person*
At the rehearsal, we see Ryan walking off stage before Mike walks on. Ryan is sitting on the opposite side of Ash compared to Rosita, looking worried as she's crying.
The next scene we see is the prepping for run-through for the Noodlemans one and Ryan is reading the newspaper over Johnny's shoulder. He looks at Johnny, apparently concerned at Johnny's behavior, when Johnny answers Buster asking if they're ready. He's seen putting a hand on Johnny's shoulder as Buster leaves and appears to be asking if he's ok.
During the theatre flood, we see that Ryan is the one doing the best besides Johnny (tigers are good swimmers after all). He's able to stop himself from being completely swept up by the current at first but is eventually pushed into the lobby with the others. Ryan is seen looking around frantically as the water raises and is the second person to take their last gulp of air before the room fills entirely. When they all spill out onto the street, he's one of the first back on his feet, helping Johnny up as he was the closest.
When the group is shown reeling after the flood, Ryan is seen sitting with a duffel bag on a bench, trying to call someone without getting an answer. It's implied he doesn't have anywhere to stay due to the bag next to him.
At Eddie's pool house, when they're trying to convince Buster to try again, we see him react in a shocked manner to Johnny's statement of "I lost the chance of ever speaking to my dad again" and keeps glancing at him for the rest of the interaction, visibly concerned.
At the start of the rebuild, Ryan also receives a call, leaving an audition to go join the rest of the troupe. He also is seen helping with the renovations, helping Johnny with the beams and slabs of concrete in particular. I would also add scenes of the troupe hanging out in there too, during the rebuild, so we see scenes of all of them practicing together and watching each other perform, cheering them on.
During the show, Ryan performs second, after Rosita and Gunter, to the song Stand Out Fit In by One Ok Rock. He high fives Johnny when he leaves the stage and then helps him drag the piano on stage for his song.
During Set It All Free, Ryan is standing next to Johnny, clearly checking on him to see if he's ok. When the quills fly, he shield Johnny himself, resulting in getting stuck in the cheek. At that, Johnny seems to snap out of it a bit, and reaches up to help him pull it out, now also looking worried. The rest of the performances, he can be seen nodding along and clearly happy, standing next to Johnny, as if he's making him experience the shows instead of moping.
When Marcus reappears, Ryan actually is hinted at seeing him first (tigers have a really good sense of hearing compared to the other species after all) and slightly turns his head towards where Marcus is before turning back to the show with a smile.
When Johnny walks back to join the others, Ryan smiles at him and pats him on the shoulder and Johnny smiles back at him. He also stands next to Johnny during bows, with Gunter on his other side.
At the unveiling of the New Moon Theatre, he's standing next to Johnny as well and throws and arm around his shoulders in the photo.
------------------------------------
Ok! One, I'm so so so sorry with how long this took (I promise I'll post the other one soon). Two, thank you for the amazing ask!
In this, Ryan would have left Klaus's troupe a few months beforehand and is trying to make it on his own as a dancer as well as helping his family care for one of his sisters, Bella, who's hinted at being sick.
There are a few Rynny coded moments, but not many, mainly because in this au I would want that plotline to spread across both movies to make the relationship seem to movie at a more natural pace. Also, their interactions in this set up a pretty natural felling close friendship that could appear in the next movie that wouldn't be shocking.
Ryan's personality is also given a spotlight a bit in this au as well, as he's shown to be ambitious as well as to be a caring individual. It also dives a bit into his backstory, but not a lot.
I hope you enjoyed!! Thank you again for the awesome ask!!!

If Sing 2 was rewritten to have Ryan either take Nooshy's place (no hatred toward her character or anything!) or interacting more with them as a trio, how would that scene where they almost go back home after Crystal threatens Mr Moon play out? Nooshy seem to be more "free" to jup onto that, but Ryan is a part of the dance group, maybe having a few friends there etc. Would he too be willing to leave hos team an follow Johnny and the others at that point or would that be a scene where they kinda realize that "Oh crap, this is it. We're gonna separate here, aren't we?", before returning imidiately to working together when the decide to put on the play anyway? (Granted, I don't know details of his trauma studying under Klaus all those years, so maybe he'd jump on the chance to leave?)
Just a thought that hit me suddenly. There are a lot of possible scenarios that could be built in that.
Hello, thank you for the amazing question!
------------------------------
I actually have already written an outline to an AU like that! I I however don't really touch on that particular so let me more thoroughly explain my thoughts!
Ryan would be with Johnny in that scene for the reason of I think that when Johnny got the (probably very concerning) call to "get out", Ryan was either with him practising or class was just wrapping up. Ryan was obviously very concerned about said message and decided to tag along to make sure everyone was ok.
However, when it was revealed that the troupe were going to leave, it was definitely a moment of "Oh crap, this is it. We're gonna separate here, aren't we?" between Johnny and Ryan. Especially since there is no way that Ryan, the Principal Dancer for a top choreographer, isn't under contract. His career and more than likely living situation (it's hard to find work in an extremely competitive performance environment) are tied to Klaus. He's reliant on him. That's not to say that Ryan supports anything that Klaus does or agrees with him ideology. He clearly doesn't. However, Ryan is still bound by contract to Klaus and the troupe at this point and couldn't leave if he wanted too.
That's not to say that Ryan wouldn't want to go with the troupe, he absolutely would. He definitely wants to get as far away from Klaus as possible due to those past traumas (I swear, my analysis of their relationship is almost done, I'll tag anyone who wants me to) and be allowed to just perform to make people happy.
However, even without the contract in place, I do think that Ryan would struggle with leaving his friends within the troupe behind to face Klaus's wrath in his absence. Therefore, if they had actually left in that scene, and Ryan wasn't bound by contract, I see two real options occurring: either 1, Ryan is able to meet with his friends and bring them with him, or 2, Ryan stays behind so he wouldn't be abandoning them. We see Ryan in a leadership role within the troupe, he wouldn't abandon people who needed him.
In the AU I wrote, Ryan is able to leave (along with a few other dancer) at the end of the movie technically due to a breach in contract. If a being affected by the contract were to commit a felony, say aggravated assault, then the contract becomes null and void, allowing Ryan to leave without facing any potential legal repreccussions.
Essentially, during the scene where they decide to leave or not at the hotel has the potential to become extremely heartbreaking. Add in squeezing each others hands, sad and pain looks, things that would hint towards their relance to leave each other, but it being clear that Ryan is duty-bound to do just that (a perfect opportunity to mirror their characters in the show).
------------------------------
I definitely got off topic there, sorry, but I hope that answered your question! I linked the AU down below, please feel free to check that out if you want. Thanks again! - <3 Gooseless
