DD: according to my data, only about 67,9% of individual ancient cities had the tradition of duelling in some way

DD: most of them (31,2%) stuck to the typical 'first one to die loses' standard, with weapons limited to archaic ones (such as old explosion-powered guns and swords of all sorts)

DD: the second in popularity was using modern weapons (24,4%), which is usually defined as 'any weapon thats not archaic'. also typically with the 'first to die loses' rule

DD: third was weaponless (9,61%) - fighting directly, hand-to-hand. this one is mostly 'first to bad injury', i think because its harder to kill someone with no weapons

DD: fourth were duels of wit (2,46%). problems to be solved mentally, first to solve the problem correctly was the winner

DD: the last 0,23% were outliers... some odd things happening there

DD: my favourite is that one city that dueled mentally. not wit. but staring at eachother, fully believing that they were somehow hurting the other with their minds. thered be narrators describing all the 'action' and all of their 'tactics'. first one to pass out from the continued concentration loses. the one that loses would get ridiculed for 'not having good enough shields'

DD: the other outliers included things such as duels of skill (highest percentage amongst outliers - 0,12%, duels of performance, and duels of games

DD: usually someone was challenged to a duel for marriage, honour, entertainment/boredom, or revenge

DD: though thereve been records of odd duel conditions... such as the one where the ancients duelling were bitter rivals, and the agreement was the the loser would belong to the winner for all of their next life. the pearl i got that info from is... phrased weirdly

🖤: Which character is not as morally good as everyone else seems to think?

Very, very quietly: my yearly reminder to everyone that Percy knew what he was doing when he invented Gun. The entire character concept, per Taliesin, is 'what the fuck could motivate someone to make something this awful'. He did not invent Gun to free Whitestone, he did not invent Gun to rid the world of terrible evil, he invented Gun because he was a terrified and hurt and furious teenager who did not care what consequences there were to his actions so long as he maybe, possibly, might be able to kill some of the people responsible for his family's deaths. Once it does hit him that he will have to live with the consequences, that others will live with this same pain because of the havoc firearms can sow, he definitely feels awful! And wants to undo it as best he can! But it remains that he was a deeply selfish character.

And still is! No Mercy Percy is a fun meme and all, but he really leans into a lot of needless cruelty when he's scrambling for control. Which pops up again even after the Briarwoods arc is all done with - he is absolutely furious at Scanlan and some of what he mildly brings up to Vex is horrifying shit to say you'd do to a friend.

Anyways he's perfectly in character in C3 and I will die on this hill. And get raised as an undead by Delilah because PERCY WAS FUCKING RIGHT ABOUT THE WHOLE THING -

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?

OK, so I know we (by we I mean me) all love to point at Percy and go 'this man is autistic please let him infodump about the Feywild/clocks/engineering stupid dragon traps'. But there is a really good reason why everyone was shocked by his backstory reveal in C1, and why he's got so few lines in the first two episodes of TLOVM, and that's because he's pretty fucking quiet. And it's something I didn't fully appreciate until recently, so it's really understandable how often it trips people up!

The main thing is that while Lord de Rolo is usually a man of few words, those words are fucking bangers. While a lot of Vax's famous lines tend to be part of a long Shakespearian ramble (which I love), Percy, as a Taliesin character, is a master of the one-liner. Which tends to get over-represented in our memory compared to how often he says very little at all!

Percy often gets wordy when he has a space to do so (a debate with Keyleth, a bit of Whitestone lore Taliesin wants to yell about, nerding out with Tary who is importantly nerding out right back)... and when he's talking to Vex. God he will not shut up when he's one-on-one with Vex. In his conversations with other characters (Vax and Keyleth namely) he usually keeps his input short unless he's doing some arguing. But with Vex? Just won't stop.

So while I do think infodumping can be compliant with canon Percy, he needs to either be doing it in tandem with someone else (he and Keyleth or Tary being little weirdos), he has to have a solid excuse to indulge in it and feel justified, or he and Vex are alone. (Cass can probably get him to infodump, but given her nature as an NPC there isn't much textual evidence alas.)

Michael in the Bathroom analysis

So i've been getting obsessed with Be More Chill lately, as you do 

I listened to a few of the songs on and off throughout the years, mainly Guy that i'd kinda be into and Michael in the Bathroom, and MITB is my FAVORITE song in any musical so i'm just gonna infodump about why that is here bc this is Tumblr and why tf not :DD (tw: suicide mention, depictions of panic attacks)

So before this song, Michael is presented as a guy that doesn't give a shit. He's not popular, he only has Jeremy as his only real friend, but it's shown that he doesn't care about other people's opinions of him, he LIKES who he is. He's a catalyst for Jeremy's character, who always cares about what others think and wants to be liked, and is insecure about his character, and hates himself, which is why he took the SQUIP in the first place. 

Now, Michael, in my opinion is an autistic-coded character. He stims and has tics as we see in MITB, he has special interests in videogames and comics, and he doesn't pick up social cues all the time, like in 'Two Player Game' when he doesn't realise Jeremy is going through stuff. It's shown there that Michael has a neat and straightforward idea for his future as a cool kid in college with Jeremy. But when he has that fight with Jeremy just before MITB, Michael's whole future, life and 12-year friendship with Jeremy comes crumbling down, after Jeremy called him a 'loser', a label that he used to take pride in. It's a drastic change that happens so quickly, which prompts him to have a panic attack.

With his psyce being utterly shattered, we don't see Michael in his usual positive, upbeat self, we see him as a vunerable, broken guy who had just lost his other half. As the song starts, Michael is initially angry at Jeremy, speaking roughly but managing to hold in his growing pain, as we see him have tics, push back tears ruthlessly, and cope through the door being knocked on which leads to overstimulation. But then he "looks in the mirror" and the mess he's in, and chokes on his tears. It finally comes pouring out. You can practically hear his anguish and despair. And after that, he speaks softly, but after the line "I wish i stayed at home in bed etc", he speaks roughly again, and talks about himself, not Jeremy. 

Before this, throughout the song Michael sings it as if it’s Jeremy’s fault that he no longer wants to be friends with Michael, with the lines “through no fault of mine”, “ignoring all our history” etc. But now, he turns to himself, and sings the lines “Michael who’s a loner”, “god he’s such a  loser” etc, basically turning the blame onto HIMSELF and saying ‘of course it’s your fault. Of course he would want to leave you.’ And the fact that he calls himself a loser, something that he took pride within himself, and says “I wish I’d off myself”, shows that under Michael’s upbeat and positive attitude lies a deeply troubled and insecure kid underneath, who in reality DOES care about what other people think and how he is portrayed.

That’s why Michael in the Bathroom is a masterpiece. It peels back the layers of an already established character and strips that character to their rawest and most vulnerable point, and George Salazar delivers all of those emotions masterfully.

i made this spiderman back when the atsv had just come out. german expressionism design infodump under the cut :^) also the name isn’t solid i don’t speak german

so glad i held off my knee jerk instinct which was to just slap spiderman’s face on cesare the somnambulist and looked at other influences.

my rules were these:

exaggerated but alien silhouette, distorting the shapes of the body to create something that is not necessarily attractive, chic, or to modern tastes, but rather is effective. (i think i still didn’t get close enough to an unusual, unappealing silhouette and my modern design sensibilities still snuck in, but i tried to convey the two differently sized body segments of a spider)

realism/practicality is like tenth on the list of priorities. if his universe is a silent film, there will not be long, fast, acrobatic fights like other spidermen have, so you can get weirder and more ornate than a simple bodysuit

top priority is returning to the base concept of A Man with the Qualities of a Spider, prowling the city with unknown intentions, and the emotions that would prompt in a paranoid Weimar-era public. this spiderman is Trying to evoke creeping terror

art style should take influence from Weimar-era film and theater posters as well as other interwar German art

he should fit into a universe which is all stark black and white, with vertigo-inducing angles and bizarre shapes. he and his world should be uncomfortable and disquieting for outsiders.

should seem potentially inhuman - you can’t tell if he’s man, monster, or machine

i’m really pleased with how the design came out! GE has such a fun and bizarre costume design language to tap into. it was hard to render a costume that’s just different materials of black :~) in my head, the lighter grey parts on the torso and limbs are semitransparent black chiffon/stocking material; the black spider on the chest and the stripes on the limbs and the mask and the collar (which is supposed to resemble mandibles) are black velvet; the eyepieces and 6 additional “eyes” are metal and glass; the spiderweb headpiece is plastic; and the poofy shorts are a more rigid material, maybe velvet or taffeta lined with some thick felt. when i was drawing it i was picturing them in vinyl but i think the era i’m targeting would make vinyl slightly anachronistic, even for a theater-type costume. obviously the toe curlies are just velvet over wire.

i’m calling it earth-90125 which is fritz lang’s bday in yy/mm/dd format. it says something else on the drawing i think, cant remember what that number means

also i realize “conrad veidt + peter lorre” is a fairly wild thing to ask someone to picture given that their faces are opposites in most meaningful ways. here’s faceapp’s attempt at combining their faces which i will grant is slightly more skillful than mine and pretty close to how i was picturing peter. just imagine him more quiet and reticent and sweaty and nice than he looks here

I have a new AU idea swimming around in my head where the Smiling Friends are all mages trying to save their town from a disaster event so I drew Mage Allan recently!!! :DD

Shout out to @universallydestinytaco for listening to my infodumping and giving great ideas and feedback on the AU!!! :D

Haven’t worked out all the details yet but here’s some (as in a lot of) info on the au:

1. It would be called the Fifteen Minutes AU since I got the idea listening to the song Fifteen Minutes by Mike Krol

2. Background: The main four would still work for Mr. Boss, but the company would be called The Smiling Sorcerers instead! Their goal is to help out around the town using their magic to make people smile!

3. Glep’s design would be very similar if not completely the same to the design in this post.

4. The main four and Mr. Boss would all have different ways of using magic/spell casting!

5. Mr Boss is a future seer and randomly gets premonitions of events shortly beforehand, usually within the same day, except in the case of really severe events like the disaster, in which he gets a couple days notice. He cannot predict everything that will happen and essentially gets a general summary.

6. Allan utilizes magic cards as both physical weapons/tools and to harness their magic. The fortune’s in the cards, so he has increased luck that he can choose to pass onto others through giving them a card. He pulls them out/summons them from the area by his heart, right underneath his bow. The drawbacks are that she can’t change the size of the cards, only combine them, and she can only use so many before running out of energy, so she has to use them wisely.

7. Glep utilizes mind magic to read others minds and even transmit thoughts to them. He can also increase the production of certain brain chemicals like adrenaline for himself without any side effects. His mind reading also works for premonitions (which makes him find out about the disaster event before the other four). The drawback is that he has to focus to clearly read someone’s thoughts and when he does so, any thoughts that someone has (intrusive, impulsive, random, untrue etc) can be read, so he has to read between the lines and ask the right questions to find out truth. He also cannot use his magic for attacks, but he can utilize it to increase his existing physical ability like in the case of using adrenaline.

8. Charlie uses his hands to cast spells that interact with the existing physical world, mainly through things like levitation and object manipulation. There is no weight limit or energy limitations for his powers, but one of the drawbacks is that the heavier the object, the more concentration it takes to levitate it. Another one of the drawbacks is that he cannot change the "core meaning" of an object (ex: he can't just instantly turn an orange into a potato, he would have to use different steps of manipulations and associations to make that happen, and it could take a while if he can’t think of a proper association).

9. Pim uses a wand to cast his light spells!! They function somewhat similarly to electricity with the different levels having different effects. The lower levels have healing properties and the higher levels are more chaotic and cause damage. They tend to use their powers more so for healing and dislike using them to cause harm, which exacerbates the drawback: The chaos of the higher levels can be difficult to control.

also a cup and a half of crack is mandatory. i cannot explain why. you cannot take them completely seriously. ever. it's part of what makes them work

if jake for some reason ever pursued hal, a lot of the time it hits me as being a bad attempt at coping. or a rebound situation, which is even worse because haha used like a tool. hah. they need Specific Circumstances to make them end in anything but a pile of burning scrap, the kind that forces them to confront their treatment of each other, and that's 1) hard 2) the first of many, many steps, for both of them. it's not a pretty sight. but it's one i love to see, in either direction [:

what inspired the graves we dug is currently hard for me to remember. i think i mainly just wanted cowboy ocs? and one of my friends (@/nonsensical-pendulum) has an oc named 'graves' and the name sort of got stuck in my head because i thought it was Cool. and then, for once (this is a rarity for me) the title came pretty quickly after the graves we dug. and i didn't know what it was about for a bit, just that there were cowboys, a mc named graves, and they were digging holes... apparently. and then slowly from there things started to fall into place. unlike a lot of my other wips i feel like tgwd has a bit of a hard to pinpoint starting point, but i also think that's bc a lot of the stuff i had relating to its origins began on the blog i used to have in 2021, but then i deleted it entirely so all of that is lost now LOL

when it came to making it a cyberwestern itself, honestly i saw some cyberwestern style art with cowboys in citypop color schemes and i was like YEAHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHH. so i thought it'd be cool to go cyber instead of a traditional western lol.

how its going

so i'mma be straight up, tgwd is on my secondary wips bracket. if you look at my big ol wip list here it kinda breaks it all down, but those on my secondary list are ones where i enjoy working on them but they just don't have the same level of brainrot status as those at the top of my mind--namely paramour and btaf have taken those spots in the past couple of years. so usually how it goes with any of my secondary wips is i'll just be vibing, suddenly think about an aspect of it, think about it for a bit and then perhaps have a bit of a frenzy where i build on it, and then i end up deflecting back to my major ideals lol. so rn (at least for the past hour) i've been thinking about tgwd and getting asks is kinda an excuse to keep focus and work on it. i'll probably end up defecting back to my usual haunts in a few days.

THIS BEING SAID i have written some things for it which i shall get into momentarily

but what's going on?

so basically here's a mini timeline/play by play of what's happening that leads up to the beginning of the wip

firstly, the land is kind of a perpetual night; the sun on this world (haven't decided if its another planet or smthn yet) is pretty dim and so cities and fluorescent lights are the main lightsources of the world. there is also an 'artificial moon' but tbh idk what that means rn.

GRAVES in his early 20s leaves the ranch where he grew up to make a life for himself in the closest city called Rapture. Rapture is a city of glitz and glamor, run by crime lords and greed. he ends up entering "the organization" (it doesn't have a name yet) as an armed hire and gets hired out on different hits by different vendors to do their bidding (which is usually taking out their grudges on other crime lords. the organization has a strict neutrality policy that most everyone respects--if you have enough money for a hit, it'll be done, or you better hire some better guards).

to aid in the ever growing violence in the city, somehow someway the organization develops a special ops unit for their largest jobs, which includes an injection of a serum which manifests certain abilities in their best agents. graves, and his new acquaintance TOMB become some of the first to experience the serum, and this ends with graves gaining a black glow around his feet and an ability to walk silently and through solid objects, and tomb gaining an ability where his mouth glows orange (i haven't decided what it is, but i do know unlike graves or dove, he can't turn his ability off).

the two do solo jobs for awhile, until the organization decides that they need mentors to train new recruits that use the serum and this is how graves ends up meeting DOVE--a former opera star who's ability glows green centered around his eyes. they sort of hit it off immediately, and though tomb warns graves about getting too attached but graves can't really help it. he and dove get. attached.

a few years like this go by, and then the organization gets a huge hit--to take place at one of the biggest centers of crime, a club modeled like an old state building called The Rome, towards the epicenter of Rapture. the organization puts its best agents: graves and tomb, and their two rapidly trustworthy mentees: dove and dawn (tomb's mentee). the situation quickly goes south when their plot for assassination is discovered, and in an effort to save the mission, graves makes well--a grave mistake, and ends up trying to take down the target. unfortunately, the shot misses and ends up hitting dove instead. an explosion goes off afterward, and tomb and graves barely escape with their lives. dawn and dove are presumed dead.

while tomb compartmentalizes and continues on with his work, graves breaks down. and in his grief, he decides to defect from the organization without getting permission first. (after the mission at the rome, graves and dove did get permission to retire, but since the job wasn't done they aren't allowed to leave) since he was also pretty high up, he also has trade secrets and they couldn't just let him go and be a loose canon like that. its easier that if he's not going to comply, that he be dead--and so they send the one person who can catch him after him: tomb. tomb's taking his time, but he's also doing what has to be done.

the whole thing however turns upside down again when dove comes "back" from the grave. he's alive! very much not dead! and from what i'm comfortable sharing at the moment is yes, he was harmed by what happened but he's still very much alive and is ready to make good on their promise: to retire. and if he has to drag graves into making it happen then so be it.

does anyone care for my galelupa infodumping? because i am not tagging this. it’s too embarrassing.

there isn’t much of a relationship between these two in QDS as opposed to DDS, but something i have noticed in the novels is how while everyone is frequently frustrated with gale just for being himself (Autistic), lupa is the one who understands his perspective. also, not pictured but do want to bring up, towards the end of vol. 2 he’s also the one to quickly defend gale when someone projects their grief and rage onto him (not elaborating due to spoilers).

sadly there is just not enough substance apart from these small moments, but if you blend the QDS+DDS galelupa you get beautiful yaoi between a dilf who lowkey struggles with self acceptance but takes a liking to the autistic guy who’s going through an existential crisis and coping with workaholism!

and in DDS, there’s definitely this moment of lupa recognizing gale as a real human being with potential (his “you have honor” moment), which causes gale’s entire mindset to abruptly shift as he awakens. in comparison to how everyone else treats him, gale is meeting someone who truly understands and sees him for who he is for the first time. so, it seems that the novels attempt this kind of similar development in their relationship, though it’s very subtle and short, especially since there is no concept of “sudden awakenings” in QDS.
