your rake’s progress post just reminded me of this - a fun dan fact i remember from reading the gossip girl books a while back that i wish had been carried over into the show was that two of dan’s very favorite books were goethe’s faust and oscar wilde’s the picture of dorian gray. in the context of the book this is just a meaningless little bit of trivia/character shading as book!dan is unequivocally the character most removed from the upper east side and never even attempts to integrate into it, but it’s the sort of thing that would have been really interesting in the context of show!dan, who even before the shitty season six gossip girl reveal found himself increasingly drawn into the moral decay of the UES and caught between who he thought he should be and what he actually wanted
