hiiiiii 💖 asking u 4, 5, 7, 21 and 34 for the movie asks!!
hiiiiii 💓 thank you aléks!
4. name a movie you put on to laugh to
honestly this could be the case for a lot of old, silly bollywood movies i used to watch when i was younger 😭 the last ones i remember watching with family for this reason specifically was partner (2007) and munna bhai mbbs (2003). not that these are the funniest movies ever by any means, but i was blanking real hard otherwise. some other nostalgic icons like shrek could probably make this list, or some cary grant movie like bringing up baby or arsenic & old lace too. etc etc
5. name a movie you put on to cry to
i dont really rewatch movies for an emotional catharsis per se but some random ones i can think of that i'd def put on for this reason:
ghajini (2008)
a monster calls (2016)
society of the snow (2023)
your name engraved herein (2020)
interstellar (2014) .. but just the murphy and cooper scenes tbh
mufasa's death in the lion king, this one particular scene from dumbo, the slipping through my fingers sequence from mamma mia, and also just putting on the maa song from taare zameen par 🥲
7. name a movie you're emotionally attached to
MANY SUCH CASES….. but to name just one: om shanti om (2007) 🥹
21. favorite animated film?
again, many such cases 🏃🏻‍♀️ but i just have to give a massive special shout-out to shrek 2!!! YOU WILL ALWAYS BE FAMOUS TO MEEEE
34. which film is the most visually beautiful?
oh gosh… there’s seriously way too many to count so there’s definitely not one i could name as THEE most visually beautiful but here’s a handful:
devdas (2002)
belly (1998) -- that opening scene is just amazing!!!
i saw the tv glow (2024)
the young girls of rochefort (1967) -- jacques demy in general is so great with color in his films so you can sub in basically any of his movies here tbh
the fall (2006)
om shanti om (2007)
bulbbul (2020)
suspiria (1977)
moonlight (2016)
the grand budapest hotel (2014) -- ik wes anderson's aesthetic is kinda overdone and copied a lot now but this movie really did leave an impact on me when i first came across visuals of it <- says the pink and pastels lover, so who's surprised?
women on the verge of a nervous breakdown (1988)
mughal-e-azam (1960)
the red shoes (1948)
helter skelter (2012)
movie ask game questions! 🍿

im rewatching jatp instead of studying for the 3 tests i have tomorrow and i thought i would share my thoughts and reactions with each episode so enjoy!!....
wake up
- hearing the “1, 2, 3″ at the start of the episode gives me more serotonin than my antidepressants ever will
- julie’s slippers...that’s it...that’s the thought
- that dry ass pasta the molina’s are eating for dinner??? someone needs to give my man ray some cooking tips or a cookbook... something
-the looks the boys give julie when she says it was an OLD cd she found. as if they could be old??
-the entire julie and luke kitchen scene i mean there are no words to describe how much i am in love with scene. the banter, the flirting, luke giving this girl he literally just met an actual PIECE OF HIS SOUL so she can get music back into her life. not a single time have i watched that scene and not felt my heart literally grow cause of how cute they are.
-the entire scene when julie is singing wake up. that scene is what made me literally CRAVE watching the other episodes. like of course i was going to watch them cause i wasn’t gonna just stop watching a show after one episode, and yes the show was good already but seeing the lighting and her voice, and just everything about the scene,,,,*chef’s kiss*
bright
-flynn drinking seven sodas....SEVEN??? i would be throwing up if i drank more than like 2 and she drank seven,,,no ma’am.
- flynn and her trumpet. talented queen
- “ i wouldn’t have given you the song if i didnt think you were gonna rock it.” lmaooo im crying:)
- i start tearing up every time julie goes to play the first notes of bright,,, and then i’m full on bawling when the guys come in and play with her cause...they weren’t playing to be seen they were playing to be there for her and play to comfort her. pls i love them<3
- nick vibing in the front row
- the tech guy deserves so much more praise
flying solo
- reggie’s little butt shake or whatever you wanna call it!!
- julie’s little laugh when she yells at the guys to stop it
- “and we’re on the runway again” GENUINELY one of my favorite lines of the whole show pls i love luke’s humor
-this is the first time i noticed this but reggie’s face after alex says “DONT TELL ME HOW TO GHOST!”
-WILLIE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU<3333333
-the slow mo helmet take off,,,,me too alex me too
-willie’s little giggles:))))
- “oh-oh!”
- “no clue” alex i love you baby<3
- next season better give us a scene of flynn throwing eggs at someone’s house because i think it’s safe to say we were robbed of that experience.
- the flying solo performance is just amazing
i got the music
- just the whole opening scene is so cute ....the dancing, singing, happiness RADIATING from julie
-nick in an all white suit and fedora
-WILLEX MUSEUM DATE YEAH BABYYYYY
- carefree skateboarder bf and anxiety ridden drummer bf
- yelling. in. museums.
-alex thinking he’s literally dying again because of the salt... zero braincells in this band.
- another scene we were robbed of that i need to see in season 2...reggie singing “home is where my horse is” while alex and julie sit patiently and attentively listen to him but luke looks like he’s about to commit murder
- i get SO MUCH second hand embarrassment for julie when she looks through luke’s songbook and says “ wow luke I didn’t know you were such a romantic” julie baby i love you but...eekkkkk
- “he looks like a substitute teacher”- where did he come up with that like so many other things he could be compared to but a substitute teacher??
- “luke introduced you to rock” heck yeah it did.. literal soulmates
- would like to see a picture of the raccoon in Flynn’s backyard
- wee woo wee woo police sirens://///
- julie’s outfit ughhhh i love it

the other side of hollywood
- THE ENTIRE PERFORMANCE OF THE OTHER SIDE OF HOLLYWOOD
- i lose my absolute shit over this song omg literal chills
- the cape grab i cannot physically do this rn
- willie being so excited the entire performance and looking over to see alex’s reaction
- reggie being in awe everytime one of the girls performing does something.. me too reggie
-”well i wouldn't really call it mAAgiCcCC bUT”
- nick and his fedora again

-the boys eating food for the first time in 25 years is honestly so realistic
-alex shoving a whole slice of pizza in his mouth
- lukes ‘OH MY GODDDDD’
- reggie kissing his meatball sub that looks painfully dry but also delicious
- the continuation of the other side of hollywood performance and everyone dancing
-reggie imitating caleb’s evil laugh and owen trying so hard not to break
-me getting mad at the boys for not showing up for julie and being sad with her but at the same time i’m obviously not mad at the boys just...disappointed?? idk
finally free
- how did julie get to the school if she missed the first three classes?? wasn’t she still at flynn’s house from the night before cause she slept over so did she walk to school or was she just sitting in flynn’s house by herself and one of flynn’s parents was like you gonna go to school or???
-dance class with nicky poo<3
-reggie fixing his amp in the rain
-julie’s blue dress outfit in this episode is my ABSOLUTE favorite
- the birthday candle scene makes me sob like a little baby,,,and rightfully so
- julie smart, smart to be taking calculus as what a sophomore??
- all eyes on me yes queen iconic
- alex dancing is how i dance in my brain whenever the song comes on
- finally free as a song is NEVER given enough credit and why not?? it’s my favorite song they do as a band AND the madison’s vocals and the echoing part omg i loveeeee
- and the whole performance with luke’s heart eyes. i count this performance as the moment luke like fell in love with julie...like full on just blown away with how much awe and admiration he has for her in that moment and all the time.
 - julie and luke singing “and you’re a part of me” while staring directly into each others soul,,,yeah that’s love kids
edge of great
- carlos being the ghost hunter he is and tía being done with him
- luke’s pouting face
- reggie and ray making breakfast together is so wholesome. reggie really loves and seeks comfort in ray and i love that
- luke just waiting next to julie’s locker and his little “hey”
- the first time i watch this scene i thought charlie was from new york cause of the way he says “ i can't do this without you” and then i watched the cast interviews and just realized he is somewhat joey tribbiani
- jealous luke hehehehehhehehe
- “well dont you look shARrP”- yes he does luke thank you very much
- “uh oh i think someone has a crush on julie” yeah you do you little shit,,, now admit it to her
- the proud look on luke’s face when he realizes julie is still paying attention to HIM even though she’s supposed to be having a full on conversation with nick
- the shoulder push ( as someone who has had their own shoulder pushed in the middle of a high school hallway as a weird way of flirting,,,,i can definitely somewhat attest to how luke is feeling in that moment and i too continued to flirt with the person who shoulder shoved me while we were still standing in the hallway)
- the flow from whatever the hell dance nick and julie are doing and the perfect harmony dance is so special to me and i love it
-ADOANCLOBNAOVBCOAB THE HAIR PLSSSSS
- EVERYTIME THE SCENE COMES ON AND I SEE HIM WALKING THROUGH THE MIRROR I HAVE TO PAUSE THE SHOW FOR LIKE 10 MINUTES WHILE I DIE LAUGHING BECAUSE THE HAIR IS SO BAD EVEN THOUGH I SHOULD BE USED TO HOW IT LOOKS AFTER WATCHING THIS SHOW LITERALLY 30 TIMES
- i think people see my username and assume i like his hair in this scene but...ummm fun little fact i do not like it
- the dance is so good though ugh my babies
- the hair
- madison is gorgeous
- another season 2 scene i need: julie teaching this dance to luke and they perform it in front of alex and reggie so they can see luke roll on the floor like that
-the hair
- the lift i loveeee
- the voices at the end of the song *chef’s kiss*
- the way julie spins out from luke and into nick omg so good
- “thAnKs pArTnER”
- luke denying his feelings for julie,,,babe pls
- the whole edge of great performance is so good and beautiful and the colors are SPECTACULAR
-julie avoiding luke’s gaze lolz
- can't believe my mans really tried to deny he didn’t have feelings for julie like 5 hours earlier even though he’s getting upset because she hasn’t looked at him in 2 minutes
- THE. GUITAR. RIFF. SOLO.
- when i finally learn how to play the electric guitar well enough to learn the guitar solo... it’s over for everyone
-nick just came to watch the girl he likes perform not watch her flirt with a hologram plssss can we give this man a break next season.
- “we have to say goodbye to julie”- that’s literally more important to luke than not playing music anymore because julie is music to him now
unsaid emily
-already crying and the episode hasn't even started
-willex in the orpheum
- alex literally being OVER reggie
- nope too emotionally unstable to watch this scene right now
- my therapist will be hearing about this tomorrow
- show us the baby picture of luke cowards
- this is such a beautiful song that makes me cry every fucking time gosh damn it
- everytime i watch the flashback scene of luke on his bike i think of “christmas song” by phoebe bridges and i cry even more
- i tried to learn how to play this song on my electric guitar (because i dont have an acoustic guitar) and i ended up crying half way through so i do not think i will be playing it anytime soon:/
- the harmonies *chef’s kiss*
- THE POLICE LIGHTS ....i cry
- FAT tears rolling down my face
- there's literally not a moment i don’t cry during this episode
- interesting little relationship :0
- when i played percussion in 7th grade i used to lay down on the couch in the practice room at school ( which god knows what people did on that couch...ew) and stick my drumsticks up my nose too,,,, just another similarity between alex and i
stand tall
- willie really drove a bus 200 miles into the desert for his crush
- WILLEX HUG
- i love willie no last name so much,,,i just wanna hold and protect him
- alex’s ballerina dance
-julie’s overall outfit i love<3
- “im swimming”
- the way carlos hangs up the iPad on tía makes me CRACK UP he’s just lmao bye girl
- another julie outfit i love
- “anything julie. you know that.” AHHHHHAASIDSJFPACISN love bitches
- the suits
- luke’s hair in this episode is so much better than the perfect harmony hair pls
- YOU GOT NOTHING TO LOSE
- the way luke looks so restricted and confined in his suit... but at the same time he looks like a 10 week old puppy
-luke’s AGGRESSIVE but small foot tapping leading up to being on the stage
- the solos:)))))
- crying again over julie’s monologue to her mom
- julie really was brave enough to be ready to perform by herself
-the way Trevor looks at carrie when she says “been here before”
-ALEXXXXXX
-REGGIEEEEE
-luuukkKKKEEEEEEE
- this performance makes me cry
- especially the first time when i saw luke flickering...sobs
- he finally looks free in his suit:))
- alex’s solo is so pretty i love him
- reggie’s solo too
- nick just straight up vibing the entire performance
- alex and luke holding hands...hehehe cute besties
- “thank you, guys” NO THANK YOU
- the way julie begs for them to do something about the jolts for HER cause she knows luke would never say no to her
- “no music is worth making, julie, if we’re not making it with you,” I JUST SCREAMED AND IM PRETTY SURE I WOKE UP MY ENTIRE HOUSEHOLD...whoops
- going back to that line i could say so much about it but....for someone who’s life was literally MUSIC for the 17 years he was alive, and after finding out he could play music again even though he was dead and saying it made him feel alive, he would give that up- he would give up playing his guitar, playing in a band with his friends, give up writing and singing music- if he wasn’t doing that with julie. that’s more than saying i love you,,,that’s literally like saying i’d give up my ENTIRE LIFE and what i love to do if i dont get to do it with you
- i just made myself cry with that description...wow
-the hug<3
-also imagine how luke felt in that moment,,, hearing this girl, once again that he would give his life up for, saying in his ear that she loves them. i would motherfucking glow too, luke
- *passionately but gently holds each others faces*
-HANDS OFF MY BABY NICK, CALEB
- caleb’s outfit is....something
- the head turn plssss
this was so long and i am so sorry but if you read this far.....leave some of your own reactions or thoughts:)))
k goodnight im gonna, ugh, finally go study ://

RATE THE EPISODE 309 Responses
Tumblr media
Overall the episode was a hit with viewers, with the majority ranking it a 4 or higher. Over half of all respondents rating it a solid 5. The hype is real!
I thought this was a great episode. A lot of hype moments and the CGI worked for me, for the most part. Looking forward to the next episode!
All around exceeded my expectations if mappa keeps this up this will go down as the best anime in history
Chef's KISS!!! 10/10 episode, i was extremely hyped the entire time.
It was amazing and I hope MAPPA keeps up with the same quality for future episodes
Amazing episode really hype
I thought the voice acting was amazing! :)
Great episode, not perfect but neither was WIT. No adaptation is perfect. This was fantastic.
It was pretty good just maybe good have been done better but I’m just happy it was done at all.
I’ve lowered my expectations to rock bottom at this point
An enjoyable time.
I think it was great! I was very excited and left me wanting more tbh
It was a very good episode!! I'm so happy to see the survey corps again!
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING MOMENTS WAS YOUR FAVORITE? 310 Responses
Tumblr media
Mikasa’s reintroduction to the series takes the largest piece of the pie, with 31.6% enjoying the scene the most. In second comes the coordinated attack from the Survey Corps against Porco, with 14.8% feeling that scene really brings the hype. At 10.3%, Levi’s first appearance in the season takes 3rd place, and with 9.7% is the overall fight between Eren and the War Hammer Titan.
Ackermans ran this episode as they should. They're on a whole different level.
Why isn't the Sasha-Gabi moment in the list of favourite moments? That's my actually favourite moment. Gabi seeing Sasha through the fire and smoke, Sasha's reflection in her eyes...chilling.
THE CGI CONTINUES TO BE A POINT OF CONTENTION. BE HONEST, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE EXECUTION OF CGI SO FAR THIS SEASON? 309 Responses
Tumblr media
In general, the fandom appears to be understanding of MAPPA’s usage of CGI, with 38.2% being completely unbothered by it, 20.1% feeling that while it’s not ideal, it could be much worse, and 18.8% not particularly caring for it but not faulting MAPPA for it either. A handful of people just wish that there would be more appreciation that it’s getting animated at all, while others continue to be a bit salty about the usage of CGI this season.
Did people forgot the god-awful Colossal titan's CGI from WIT? Well, I didn't so I wasn't surprised by the same level of CGI in Eren's scene (thankfully just one of them). I rarely have issue with CGI in SnK except for truly awful looking ones so like couple of times in the season, usually.
I honestly wouldn't even know there's CGI if everyone wasn't complaining about it. I honest to god can't see where they use it.
It's mostly fine
I thought the war hammer titan looked AMAZING, the only CGI that looked odd was the scouts in the background, but that’s really it...?
A few sore spots (e.g. Erens titan looked kinda off this ep), but it's not season-ruining yet.
CGI Titans >>>>>>>> CGI Survey Corps
It works fine for titans that already look somewhat mechanical (Armor, Jaw), but it looks incredibly awkward for the others, to the point of taking me out of the story.
Sometimes great sometimes shit
Maybe I've been spoiled by studio orange and the previous seasons, but I know for a fact that they can do better. This is not a new anime, this is the final season of one of the greatest anime of all time, so yeah I expected much better CGI, it was poor and unecessary.
i think it’s gr8/unnoticeable,,,,,like we all put up with the colossal titan in s1-3 lmao
Some Titans like Eren and Beast look a little weird but I just really like how they made effort to make it blend with the art style. Maybe if they had found a way to cut the animation down to 12fps it might not look so bad? Anyways I think it’s good for what it is, MAPPA is doing their best!
I barely noticed it. The animation looks BOMB. Top 5 episodes of the whole series for me and BEST action episode of AOT easily.
I'm always going to prefer 2D but I understand why they're using it. Still sad about what could've been if they were given enough time to work on the season. Definitely going to lower my expectations.
My dumbass wouldn't even notice, I just want to see the pretty people
I think the CGI for the Titans is completely fine. It's the CGI for the Scouts that was a bit off putting for me. Still, not enough to ruin the episode. And if we continue to get animation of this standard I will be fine with it.
At this point after episode 7 onward eventually AOT CGI is going to be worst than EX-arm's CGI
I love it because it makes the titans scarier and more eerie? I also miss the 2D ones because they feel more natural. Overall, I think it's fine!
I think the CGi is well executed (for the most part), I just don't like that they had to use it so much.
It's a great job. They manage to execute it very well and go to a normal animation when it's needed. It doesn't bother me tbh
HOW WAS EREN’S ROOFTOP SWAN DIVE? 309 Responses
Tumblr media
Eren’s dive in the anime was a bit different than in the manga, but it seemed to get a few laughs out of the fandom, so we asked you all to rank it. 58.3% felt it was the most beautiful dive to have ever dived, while only 5.5% think Eren really needs to work on his form. He did his best.
WHICH RETURNING CHARACTER’S ENTRANCE WAS YOUR FAVORITE IN THIS EPISODE? 310 Responses
Tumblr media
Mikasa stole the show this episode, with 53.5% enjoying her entrance the most. Levi wasn’t too far behind though, with 29% of respondents hyped over his return. 11.6% were very happy to see Sasha again, while smaller chunks were glad to see Jean and Connie.
They massacred my Jean-boy’s entrance 🥲
WHICH RETURNING CHARACTER HAS THE BEST MAPPA-STYLE GLOW UP? 304 Responses
Tumblr media
We got a more colorful and evened out pie for this question. Overall the largest chunk, at 24.3%, are enjoying MAPPA’s take on Eren’s iconic “hobo chic” look. 21.1% think Sasha looks the best out of all of them, while Mikasa trails just behind her at 20.1%. 16.1% are grateful for Connie’s design, leaving 9.5% favoring Jean, and smaller handfuls appreciating MAPPA’s take on Levi and Floch.
Chubby Floch
Here I am watching the trailer all over again because that's probably the only way to see Jean animated handsome and with his actual manga face. MAPPA what happened?
Levi has a thicc ass
I’m a big fan of all the time skip character designs, it was hard to pick just one favourite :)
Jean looked stupid... Floch too but that's not important.
OG characters designs feels a bit off to me. I understand why they use CG for some parts and I have mixed emotions about it. I hope they won't rely on it too much on the upcoming episodes.
#ITSTIMEMIKASA WAS TRENDING ON TWITTER BEFORE THE EPISODE AIRED. ON A SCALE OF 1-5, HOW MUCH DID IT LIVE UP TO THE HYPE? 304 Responses
Tumblr media
One of the most anticipated scenes of the Marley arc was the return of the Survey Corps and the way Mikasa paves the path for their reintroduction. The fandom appears to be very happy with MAPPA’s execution of the scene, with 60.9% of respondents rating it with a 5, with 27% rating it a 4.
EEEEEEEEEEK MIKASA
Mikasa! Mikasa! Gosh love her!
im so glad mikasa is back owfejgrnrkdfs
MAPPA INCLUDED FILLER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EPISODE OF WILLY HESITANTLY DEPARTING FROM HIS TEARFUL FAMILY. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE ADDITION? 310 Responses
Tumblr media
The series isn’t known for having too much filler, but typically what filler does exist seems to be appreciated by the fandom, and this was no exception. 56.8% of respondents were happy for a little more fleshing out of Willy’s character (also learning that those kids were his!) and being able to sympathize more with him. 19.7% appreciated the more sympathetic addition until they remembered he was willing to throw Liberio under the bus for his plan. 13.5% are appreciative of any and all additional Willy content. A small amount didn’t like the filler and would rather have had MAPPA put their effort into other things.
I liked it. Got to see more of his fine ass. lmao
Don't add extra 2d animation if You can't even handle what's in the manga
It would've been better to show before he was dead. Fleshing him out after the audience already know he's dead doesn't hit as much imo
Wasn't one of the scene itself, but then again I'm always interested in scenes I haven't seen yet.
I am so grateful, willy for is one of my favourites and omg we got to see his family and how is he a lovely papa 😭💕 I can't ask for more bless you MAPPA🤘
fuck them kids
Why should we feel bad for him? He tried to unite the world against Paradis. He got what he deserved.
this was a benefit. as manga readers, we had time to know willy. anime onlies will only ever have these 2-3 episodes and it was very humanizing
How is that possible that Tybur little kids in few seconds were louder nad more chaotic than THE WHOLE CITY DURING THE ATTACK??
It's very regrettable he left so many children fatherless because of what he chose to do. Really saddening..
I’d have rather seen more of the manga animated
I knew why they added it, but I (personally) think willy is crud. Not mad it's there tho!
He did his duty as a Tybur to the very end. Honestly I wish he could have lived longer, he’s a really compelling and interesting character.
I feel like some viewers have carelessly misunderstood Willy because of that scene in the carriage. They're like 'wow, he really hates and shames his own people huh?' but at the beginning of the episode we all saw his abundance of children. Would it not have been extremely contradictory if he had truly wanted the extinction of all Eldians and then at the same time did the complete opposite by mass-reproducing a small army of Eldian children? Maybe that's why that scene was added to the start of the episode, to keep people away from mischaracterising him. Unfortunately, this may have simply been missed or overlooked by some.
they should had polish the damn episode instead of fillers.
Loved it! Mappa is killing it with the episode additions
Reading the manga, I truly didn't even consider the possibility that these were Willy's children because he is so obviously a ~*bachelor*~. Like, it didn't even cross my mind that those children weren't his little nieces and nephews because he is suuuuch a Theater Gay. Nothing can change my mind.
Wait a minute, are these the kids in that ending slide from season 3?
IN THE ORIGINAL CHAPTER 101, MAGATH IS THE ONE WHO ADVOCATES FOR KILLING EREN INSTEAD OF EATING HIM (IN CONTRAST TO HIS SUBORDINATE KOSLOW) AND NOTES THAT “THE AGE OF TITANS IS OVER.” IN THE ADAPTATION, MAGATH INSTEAD ADVOCATES FOR EATING EREN, NOTING THAT KILLING HIM WOULD ONLY PROLONG THE PROBLEM. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CHANGE? 305 Responses
Tumblr media
A minor dialogue change didn’t seem to have much of an effect on nearly half of respondents, with 47.5% saying they’re indifferent to the change. 43.3% like the change much better, feeling that it works a lot better with future story developments and makes more sense. A handful didn’t care for the change and felt it tampered with Magath’s overall characterization.
I think the change was logical and more consistent with the story, but I'm naturally skeptical of any AOT manga-to-anime change.
I forgot this.
It ovewrites the flaw of Magath's original plan. Even if I think its unfitting of him, it makes sense.
I'm not sure what I feel about it. Kinda like how they added Falco having a dream back in episode 1. For now, let's just see.
I suppose the new change is a little contradictory because Magath dislikes Marley’s reliance on Titan power and rather just wishes th ey had prowess in other ways.
Realistically eating him makes more sense for them to eat Eren so they gain control of the Founder but I think Magath accepting the age of Titans is now done for is more in character.
It obviously makes more sense logistically, but I think it's important for Magath to stand opposed to Marley national policy on this front, like, symbolically.
BETWEEN UDO AND ZOFIA, WHO WOULD YOU HAVE LIKED TO SURVIVE TO RECEIVE MORE STORY IN THE MANGA? 304 Responses
Tumblr media
Though they are minor characters, the anime seems to have made some of the fandom a bit more fond of them. Still, 38.5% wouldn’t change anything about their fates, stating that they were necessary for Gabi to develop further as a character. 28% would rather neither of them died and are curious about how they would have developed if they lived to see another day. 23.7% say if they had to pick only one of them, it would be Udo due to his relevant commentary. A handful leaned toward Zofia, wishing they could have learned more about her.
Udo. But at the same time Isayama can barely handle all the characters that are still alive so Udo probably wouldn't get a lot of screen time anyway.
Zofia. I didn't care about her while reading the manga, but in the anime she was more unique. I liked her stoic voice a lot. Zofia and Gabi should have switch the places.
None cus i don't like Gabi
Both or neither. One would be just a third wheel to Gabi and Falco. I would love to see more of Udo and Zofia but I think their deaths were important
Udo and zofia's deaths hurt so bad. I didn't particularly care for either of them when reading the manga but i grown attracted to them in the anime. Udo's in particular breaks me. He was such a energic kid and he... got trampled to death. I'm just...
Neither. Both were serving an enemy nation and deserved what they got.
They weren't important to me so I don't really care
OPINION ON HOW THE ATTACK ON LIBERIO WAS PORTRAYED? 306 Responses
Tumblr media
47.1% of respondents didn’t want to pick sides, stating that the attack was tragic in both mediums of the story-telling. 25.8% felt that it was much more devastating in animated form alongside the sound, music and voice acting. 18.3% felt a bigger impact while reading the manga.
Both versions are devastating, but Manga hit harder bc I just was so confused and couldn't stop trying to figure out wtf Eren was doing and why. Watching it knowing what I know made it somehow more devastating and yet also more palatable (bc I have a better understanding.)
It was more devastating in the manga. Especially Udo's death scene
I think I have to wait until the battle is over. So far it's alright.
Loved it
It gave me more emotions in the manga.
They got what they deserved
It was far more devastating in trailer 🙄
WE FINALLY HAVE A NAME FOR LADY TYBUR - LARA! THOUGHTS? 307 Responses
Tumblr media
One of the few characters left with no name after the large guidebook released a few years ago, Lady Tybur was all we could call her (aside from fan-given names). Now she has an official name! 26.7% found it neat that we finally got this official detail. 25.4% feel that now they can finally sleep at night. 17.6% are forever grateful for the name drop and hated waiting so long for it. 15.3% don’t care at all and 11.7% feel this confirms that Isayama is a fan of Tomb Raider.
Not what I was expecting and wasn't expecting her to get a name. At least people can stop calling her Emma or those other dumbass meme names.
Cool. Next up: names for the Blouse kids, right? Right right?
I'm not kidding when I say I literally jumped up and screeched "SHE HAS A NAME!!!"
she didn't need it. she was the mysterious lady t.
Lara was more lucky than Traute, who got more panels in the manga but her name was mentioned only in the guidebook.
Still died
WHICH SCENE FROM THE PREVIEW ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? 306 Responses
Tumblr media
Of all the shots in the preview, 45.1% of respondents were most looking forward to Levi’s staged attack on Zeke. 17% favored seeing Mikasa assist Eren, 15% were most looking forward to seeing Falco emerge from the basement to see the carnage outside. 10.1% were stoked to see Pieck enter the battlefield. The episode has aired as of the publishing of these poll results - we hope these scenes lived up to the hype (even though we guessed one wrong lol).
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE?
I enjoyed the episode very much. I felt that the CGI was handled fairly well given the time restraints. However, there were a few instances where it was a bit jarring like Eren eating Willy, Eren pulling the WHT's cord, Mikasa landing on Eren, and Jean climbing up on the roof. Also some of the CGI models looked a bit weird for the scouts. I'm hoping some of these issues can be improved on in the Blue-ray version. Overall, these issues were noticeable but didn't take too much away from my enjoyment of the episode.
As much as I don't like the CGI, episode was great.
Just that it was fantastic and I can't wait for the next one!
The music is top notch. I love it. Especially the new version of XL TT near the end
After re-visiting the trailer we got for this season, it's just....saddening. Everyone was wondering how Mappa was gonna animate AoT and after seeing that trailer, all that effort by the animators, I thought "it's in good hands!". Now that we're getting the episodes and it's underwhelming. I don't blame the Mappa animators at all and cgi is unavoidable at some moments. But whoever are the higher ups who said "animate this in the shortest amount of time" ARE the assholes. It's so upsetting for this anime and the workers of it to be brought down like this :'(
Continuing to enjoy the pictures on the page come to life in the anime.
It was pretty amazing, I was waiting for so long to see this part animated! Aaand I'm so happy I got to see again the scouts! (expecially Connie, my personal fav)
Erwin should had lived instead of Armin, so Erwin can nuke Marley dropping from a blimp
I really liked it! I don't understand all the critics about the animation. It looks really neat and smooth
the SC backlit in that final scene was sickkkkk
It was different from the manga, but all the differences just improved the storytelling and fleshed out the people in Marley. Well done, MAPPA!
aaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
I’m just grateful Mappa actually gives a shit about adapting the story properly. That alone makes this season a 9/10 for me cause that’s rare to see in the anime industry these days.
THE OST WAS FIRE
Gabi's voice acting was amazing this episode ! Also, it feels good to hear the ODM gear sound effect again. The CGI didn't keep me from enjoying the fight, we got awesome camera movements and good choreography, I'm very hopeful for next episode ! Also best boy Onyankopon might appear soon ?
I seriously do not know why people are complaining. It was amazing! Can't wait for the next episodes, it's going to be action-packed and intense!
I don't know if I liked the episode or not. I usually prefer manga so even episodes I like I prefer their manga versions but there is something in off with the episode and usually, Titans fight are more excited but this one Nah it was not at all. War hammer was great in animation it served a better understanding of its powers but the fight, in general, was like boring?? idk maybe because I am a manga reader so the titan power/character's introduction was not as thrilling as they were when I've read the chapters. anyways, there is still more of the attack on liberio in the next episode so I'll give my final thought when we conclude the arc
I really enjoyed and the CGI doesn't bother me.
I think the reason Attack Titan looks a bit off is it looks a bit thinner! Warhammer looks amazing because it's a true copy of the manga. If Attack Titan was a bit buff, I think nobody would have that much of a problem. Overall the chapter is amazing!
as much as i adored everything else i must admit... what is wrong with the character design? what happened to everyone's jaws?? i think jean, mikasa and pieck were the worst drawn. in the manga, they look flawless.
I just hope we would get actual discussions in the sub instead of circle jerking or bitching about the cgi/ost etc.
The soundtrack was epic as hell
Mappa is doing a good job, with the little time they had. But sadly, they had the capacity to do way better and I will always regret this situation. And the Jojo memes on Mikasa are on point: in that specific panel, she looks ugly and unlike her cute face in the manga. For the rest of the episode, she's well portrayed
I think this episode is a taste of what is to come. It’s one thing to read still, silent pictures of complete devastation, and it’s another thing to hear the explosions, the screaming and crying. Seeing the blood painted red instead of black and white. When Eren rumbles the world, more people will realize how evil it is, how completely irredeemable. Less people will be #teameren once they get to see it in the anime. I can’t wait to see what MAPPA has in store.
So many nice details in the battle that weren’t there in the manga, the war hammer animation was particularly great
I feel bad complaining, but this was the first episode of the season that has disappointed me at all. Every other episode I feel has elevated the manga. I don't want (and never expected) to be that person, but the CGI, especially on the humans (WHY??) was so awkward it was distracting. We also lost a little bit of expressiveness from Eren, which is kind of a big deal when there's so little from him to begin with.
Soundtrack was lit!!!!
It is what it is. But after I finished the episode I went back to watch the trailer and got sad that the season just isn't going to look like that. It's not bad by any means and I understand that these are people, not robots working on this with an extremely tight schedule. This entitled fanbase is super embarrassing with it's behavior and harassment of the people working on it. I kind of hope the final arc doesn't get animated now because these people don't deserve it.
Awesome! I was a bit distracted how the pacing was, cutting a bit weirdly from one episode to another, but I really enjoyed it!
That closeup of Eren's Titan after he nom'd Willy is NUTS.
It was emotionless and almost boring. The sound director keeps fucking up big time. I didnt feel anything close to the hype I felt watching the Armored/Colossal reveal animated. There were no exciting goosebumps, or tears. Nothing. Also the CGI was terrible. There were good things, but I expected much more for suck a climatic episode
It was a good episode after all, graphic was ok but i think that if they continued with the same titan 2d animation of first episodes and maybe changed a bit some sound it would have been waaay better. Still a good episode imho
The episode was very average. I'm not trying to complain, I know that the anime is mostly for anime-onlines, while we have a manga, but I expected better. I imagined the titan fight to be smooth, but in reality both - WHT and AT - moved like two, fat elephants. In the manga I felt that WHT was fast like a wind. In the anime Lara was slow, she looked like she had a hard time to even hold her hammer. The moment between Eren and Mikasa was disappointing. In the anime when Mikasa was upset about Eren's actions, he was completely unfeeling, while in the manga we see him being full of emotions and almost crying. I know he will turn into a cold bastard but MAPPA shouldn't dehumanize Eren so much now. I was surprised by Connie's glow up. MAPPA has done better job with him. In the manga he still looks like a kid, while MAPPA made him more mature-looking and masculine. That's good for underrated Connie. I'm grateful for the scene between Willy and his children. This way he feels more sympathetic and isn't ""just a guy who declared a war and was eaten by Eren"".
I really like how the warriors and Marleyans seem to be getting a somewhat equal amount of screen time as the scouts have gotten after they've come into the picture. I hope this helps to make clear for the anime-onlies that understanding the experiences, emotions and the development of the other side is just as important as understanding those of the scouts/Paradis.

After much watching...I cut it down to 5 anime and 1 short.
Suppose a Kid… 1
I am not writing out that full title every time! Anyways, here’s the first “real” debut of winter 2021.
For some reason…this series reminds me of Pokemon. Probably how at the start, Ash tries to get along with Pikachu by doing all sorts of things like what Lloyd is doing here. (<- learnt protag’s name through synopses)
The name “Shouma” rang a bell and I was right – Shouma is voiced by Souma…Saito.
The Japanese title has “monogatari” on the end there…so it probably doesn’t fully translate into the English title.
These orange flecks in Lloyd’s eyes are kinda distracting…
Isn’t Kunlun in China, though…?
If this is just going to be Marie yelling…I don’t see why I should stay. (<- turned volume on for everything so far)
*facepalms* Lloyd is so dense…
That fight scene’s not very good…
…oh great. Selen’s fallen in love with Lloyd already…*sigh*
The missing princess is certainly going to be a plot point later.
Wow, that tiger looks impressive! If only they could’ve done that for the fight scene…
…oh great, Selen is a low-key yandere…
Didn’t Lloyd say he sucked at combat…? Anyways, I’m not keeping this. The designs are colourful and the tiger was good, but it’s meant to be a comedy and it’s not funny.
Hortensia Saga 1
Here for Ume! He’s voicing a guy called Defloitte Danois.
I-Is that CGI? So early on into the anime???
*a dude gets bitten into by the werewolf*…welp, at least this series isn’t afraid of its own gore.
I had a sinking feeling our real protag was Alfred…and I was right, according to the OP.
Huh? The song goes silent for a second near the end…what the heck?
The book appears to use English, albeit English so faintly inked in you can’t quite tell what language it is.
Alfred, governing Albert…? Isn’t that a bit redundant?
I swear all the female voices in this anime are squeaky as all get out…
All these high fantasy anime – or heck, any high fantasy series full stop – ever justify why the country is worth fighting for. It’s why I find war stories pointless and senseless.
You can tell from the voice and short stature “Marius” is Mariel…but she uses boku, which is why Alfred can’t really tell the difference. (Also, he wasn’t privy to the fact Mariel cut her hair.)
This almost smacks of a game tutorial. The CGI is still there…it’s not as bad as other examples I’ve seen, but you can tell it’s CGI when you look at it.
Roy’s kind of pretty, in a generic way.
A close-range archer! Ho, you’re kinda impressive yourself, Roy. (The feeling of a game tutorial has disappeared by this point.)
Hortense…of Hortensia…how confusing.
The scruffy guy you keep seeing with the dark hair is Defloitte. Keep an eye out for him for me, would you?
The ED seems to consist mostly of…anguished pop screams. *cringes slightly*
Anyways, this anime isn’t bad. It’s quite average though and its CGI could easily get worse.
Kumo Desu ga 1
…you know I don’t like 1st person cam, yeah?
…this is just Kumoko (as I’ve heard her being called) yelling so far…plus there’s quite a bit of CGI.
I like how the ED has an English overlay and the style they’ve used for it. The music, though…? Nah.
Wait a second? Millepensee? Shin Itagaki? That would explain the CGI!
“…a spider that just happens to have my memories.” – A butterfly dream, huh?
…well, at least this anime is well aware of the genre space it inhabits. Maybe you could say…it’s an isekai light novel, so what? *groans from the audience*
…well, you didn’t really “bring” your “brother’s” (?) corpse in case of an emergency, now, did you?
…welp, to have guts, you must eat guts. I guess that’s how it goes.
What’s a “skanda”?
This anime’s quite monologue-y (as expected of an LN). I can live with it, but I don’t know if it can carry the entire thing through the season.
…humans? Haven’t seen them almost all episode. What are they up to?
These designs sort of look like SAO’s. They’re not a dealbreaker yet, but they could be down the line…
This ED seems to take cues from Cop Craft’s OP (same studio). It also has some…“Aggretsuko rage”, I guess you could call it.
2.43 1
…Another confusing title, I see. I normally don’t do sports anime, but I’m here for Ume.
*sees the colour of the volleyball* - Basically anything volleyball has to collaborate with volleyball maker Mikasa, doesn’t it?
This anime seems to like putting characters’ thoughts on the screen for dramatic impact. The CGI is sort of visible, but not a dealbreaker.
I’d thought I’d heard of this OP artist before, but it turns out I haven’t.
This series has a nice sense of force. You see those moments where the ball squishes, or when Yuni presses against the wall without thinking? Those.
LOL, way to burn Yuni, Chika…
These transitions are a bit hard to detect. I think I like Akudama’s more overt ones more.
LOL, Dr Popper (sic).
The serves are nothing special. Haikyuu does the same thing from the episode I saw of it. (You know I don’t like Haikyuu, yeah? Dropped it after 1 episode because everything I heard the fans talking about caused me to connect the dots.)
The way Yuni blushes…it’s more than someone usually would, even if it is out of embarrassment. It may just be the entertainment I consume, but I could swear that’s going somewhere in more of a BL manner.
I get the feeling Chika has a bit of Virgo or Taurus in him somewhere. The sort of guy who nags at everyone to do stuff his way is probably like that.
Pocari Sweat (unaltered).
I gave myself dimples by puffing up my cheeks and poking them until they became permanent. I guess you can do the same thing with ambidexterity…?
For some reason, I can detect Chika’s jealousy when he discusses blocks and natural talent.
…wow, this anime is pretty serious for a volleyball anime.
The ED scene where the face is replaced with flowers is pretty creepy. Like Jigokuraku or something.
Cells at Work!! 1
What are these blob creatures you see in the OP, anyway…?
I think I remember reading something that the numbers assigned to the cells aren’t arbitrary – they’re hexadecimal colors, e.g. RBCs get shades of red as their numbers.
D’aww, Platelets warm the heart. They really do.
Platelets have a master…? I thought they were all just lil’ kids.
“What the cell’s going on?!” – Oh, I remember seeing a tweet about this. I love that pun! Kudos to whoever was responsible for that.
LOL, no. 4989 dancing in the background.
Hmm…those nets look like CGI.
…uh, I did not need that shot of the Megakaryocyte’s camel toe…that’s distubring.
Wait, Backward Cap is a she?!
Aw, lookit WBC being a dad. That’s cute.
Backward Cap = Ushiromae-chan.
Is that…a construction worker holding a giant pudding?!
Cells at Work Code Black 1
This anime is called “black” due to black companies. It’s Code Black to avoid being racist, I guess. I’m looking forward to it because it’s undoubtedly going to show a dark side to the main series…
…and there it is, the RBC complaining.
I assume OJT = on the job training.
I knew “pespin” (sic) was a typo. It’s pepsin.
Now that I’ve been working at customer service for two years (give or take COVID), I can see where the senpai RBC is smoothing over the relations.
…that also means I know where to suppress my emotions. I’m not a person who opens up to people easily without getting used to them, so people never see me as suitable for customer service anyway, but it’s the only experience I have so *shrugs*.
…oh gosh. I haven’t seen these words since…the time I was still learning biology.
…*sigh* Rookie RBC is worried about boobs.
The fact Senpai lost his iconic hat…is kinda sad, actually.
“Don’t let his resolve be for nothing.”
Hmm…does the male WBC from the main series wear black fingerless gloves?
I thought I’d heard of this artist before…but turns out I just can’t distinguish really autotuned artists from each other…(lel)
…and stuff goes ka-blam. It’s the spiritual successor to HypMic, even if I wasn’t asking for it. (LOL)
Back Arrow 1
…I heard you said “hot guys”? (Yes, I am predictable as all get out.)
What’s with that episode title…?
Stereotypes, eh? I kind of expected as much from the promo, but where’s the title character…?
…was that yuri fanservice? I can’t quite tell because it was the aftermath of an action scene, but I can see the shippers gearing up in my head.
…after a bit of waiting, there he is. Back Arrow himself. He kind looks like Takuto (Star Driver).
“I’m not trying to hide anything!” – Well, that’s…true.
…*sigh* Why do girls always have more feminine-looking mechs? (Plus this one has boobs…*sighhhhhhhhhhhh*)
So it seems mechs in this anime are the form of one’s conviction and they have skills along those lines, eh? An interesting concept.
…you do realise I abandoned an entire anime based on a joke about lucky underwear? However, this anime is so absurd and just keeps running with the joke that I just can’t say no to it. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from volunteering at a charity store, it’s that when it comes to selling stuff, you can’t say no to a lot of stuff…including selling potentially used underwear, so long as it’s not dirty or stinky.
Whoa! Those things break?!
Why does the title card mention the wall...?
Anyways, I…like it, surprisingly enough. Let’s keep going.
Back Arrow 2
…eh? Didn’t expect inflatable clothing, LOL.
I suspect Shu Bi is scheming something.
What’s the long thing…?
“…tomorrow might not come.” – A good reminder to have in these times of COVID.
Peath = Peace. (Heh. What a stupid name…*thinks about the name “Quattro Bajeena” suddenly* Okay, “Peath” pales in comparison to that.)
What is that creature that circles in the sky…?
I know this is meant to be a serious fight, but…that attacking guy’s hat seriously looks like a bamboo stalk and so I keep seeing it and trying not to laugh.
I only just now realised there’s CGI. CGI these days is getting much better than it used to be.
Tomozaki 1
LOL, Yontendo. It’s clearly Smash Bros + Nintendo Switch and the character designer was also around for Iroduku, so that’s why this style looks familiar.
…lemme guess, since this is a romance, it’s likely NONAME is Aoi. Or some other girl.
I would pay for a romance where it’s the girl building the guy up to be presentable, instead of a girl building other girls up to be presentable a la Ageha 100%.
Didn’t the anime show us Tomozaki reflecting to himself, though…?
“…rules working in combination.” - Well, there’s social norms (e.g. knock before entering a room), laws, contracts, societal standards (e.g. in Japanese society, you bow to others as a greeting or apology)…(continues to blabber on for a bit)
I think Aoi said something like “onitadaku”, but I’m not sure what the joke is there. Oni is in there, sure, but what’s the original phrase she’s playing off?
…LOL, it’s a good time to remind people to wear a mask.
LOL, Krout.
Anyways, this seems decent. I like how it’s going the way I want it to.
Tomozaki 2
“…make sure I’m nearby…” – Okay, that’s just being pushy, Aoi.
Minami and Hinami…so confusing…
*Minami chomps on Natsubayashi’s ear* - …okay, that’s not a thing girls do in real life unless they’re lesbians. This is likely trying to take the fanservice route.
They didn’t even show why the “kiss” was broken up…meaning they were doing it to make potential girl-on-girl look hot. Just great.
*Aoi touches Tomozaki’s butt* - Dude, that’s groping…
I didn’t think we’d get the story on Aoi’s “hexactly” so soon.
…well, that episode just made me feel mildly bitter. I’m dropping it here.
Praeter 1
…aw s***. Only a few seconds in and this looks like a terrible game…
It’s like someone barfed paint across Durarara…
The only time the background buildings look any good are when there’s a fight scene…
These Seals (or whatever those designs are called) seem to act like mini shields. Update: They’re called tattoos.
That transition was a bit fast for my liking…
Seems like the series is mildly peppered with Greek terms.
“To Infinity and Beyond” by…some author I can’t really read the name of.
Suddenly, they throw in more characters…?
Where does Eiji keep those bullet cases of his…? In his jacket?
Having a guy die in the 1st episode is cheap. I mean, we don’t quite care for him yet – it’s too early in the anime for that.
Now there’s Norse terms on top of the Greek ones…
Even more characters? You kidding me?
Lemme guess, Eiji gave up his tattoo because Yamato inspired him and now he’s a goner.
Welp, the weight of the world is in your hands, Yamato. Including that dead dude on your back. (<- sarcastic)
Sk8 1
I’ve been hearing good things about this anime! Let’s go! (<- about a week late to the debut)
That politician is probably relevant…probably someone’s dad, if HypMic taught me anything.
LOL, a beef. They call this stuff “beef”? Where’s the chicken? (<- joke from HypMic)
Haemanthus…apparently a flowering plant from S. Africa.
That’s rare, you don’t see Canadians in anime all that much. I was just thinking as I came home from volunteering how you know British people all have fancy names like William and Australians are Johnno, Danno etc., but Canadians? No clue. Update: Apparently you’d call one Arnold or something just as generic…?
Why are all foreigners in anime half-Japanese with the mother being the Japanese side, anyway?...Because people can make their character speak Japanese while looking foreign. Right. Moving right along.
Ahh…I understand your plight all too well, Reki.
…Hmm. It seems Reki’s surname is written kiya, but read “Kyan”. His name literally translates to “history (calendar/age) of bravery (military might)” Update: Turns out his surname is 3 characters (read “kiyan”, although I’ve never seen that final character ever being read as “n”) and his first name is one, so his first name is just “history (calendar/age)”.
Even I suck at balancing on bikes and stuff (…yeah, I still can’t ride a bike even though I’ve done so many other things in my life) and I know you have to support yourself with one foot on the ground before you do things like trick flips. I may not have observed Tony Hawk all that much, but he was on the periphery of my knowledge.
“What’s your hourly wage?” – Ouch, I feel ya, Langa.
Koko ni netete actually means “Lie down here”, but…okay.
These eyecatches are cute.
That’s a cute fox.
Yikes! 60 mph = approx. 97 km/h!!!
Random umeboshi, LOL.
Aghhhhhhhhhhh! Cherry Blossom’s so pretty~! I love him already!
Thank you, based Bones!
Something that can be enjoyed, even without sound: this is why I enjoy both action and comedy anime!
Okinawa? We’re in Okinawa?
Well, that was cool! I didn’t even ask where the location was until the end. Update: Why is this anime sometimes called Sk8 the Infinity anyway…?
Horimiya 1
Horimiya…I’ve been aware of this series for a while. There’s even a Chinese volume of it at a library close to me, although due to contact tracing I haven’t bothered to check it out.
Oh, I bet Hori is the otaku!
Ooh, Marketing Script!
Because I’ve been behind on the premieres, I’ve seen enough to know this boy with the chain is Miyamura.
…argh! Miyamura is cute! Y’all were right!!! (<- likes blushing bois)
I bet there’s going to be an emergency meeting!
“Sorry, it’s egg time!” – Oh, I’m laughing so hard! So that’s the context behind the Wonder Egg Priority meme!
“…see these?!” – Well, it’s not like you have a tattoo or some-*Miyamura shows his tattoos* Never mind…
Oh, I just realised they even animate the minute movements of the eyes Miyamura does…cool.
Notice how Miyamura is blocked from the other guy due to the window.
Miyamura goes “Ishikawa-kun” but “Hori-san”…hmm. No wonder he’s letting Ishikawa get Hori.
The problem I find with romance series is that they’re generally tied to heteronormativity. Hori is coded with red silhouettes and Miyamura with blue…*sigh* Whatever happened to gender ambiguity?
Good heavens, what is up with this ED?! It looks like Pocoyo! (…Does anyone else know that cartoon…?) Aside from that quibble, this anime is great though.
Mushoku Tensei 1
Apparently this is the grandad of all isekai. Why it took so long for an anime of this…who knows?
…and of course this guy’s a loser virgin. Go figure.
*sighhhhhhhhh* He’s just ogling this woman’s boobs…
…oh, sorry. I was so distracted by the man candy, I didn’t care about Rudy.
I-It’s actually quite refreshing to not have an OP protagonist from the get-go for once. (Or maybe I’ve developed such a disdain for isekai since SAO rolled around that everything here suddenly feels fresh.)
You can see the birthplace of isekai without having watched any of the others right here, it looks like.
“…what’s the point of incantations?” – To make it easier for you to cast spells, I gue-spoke too soon.
…wow, they shamelessly showed off Rudy’s privates. I know he’s still young at this stage, but that reminds me of how I dropped Dragon Ball around the time Goku was shown the same way (which is…very early on, by my own admission).
I believe, based on the name of the spinoff I see in the 7 Seas emails, the magic tutor is called Roxy.
You’re thinking about marriage?! At your (reincarnated) age?!
Oh no! The tree again!
LOL, Rudy’s acting like a kid who’s been in COVID lockdown for a while.
I think what most of the isekai that spun off from here missed is that the loser is job age. Losers at life at job age are relatable and high school geniuses are relatable (albeit sometimes insufferable), but losers who become NEETs for no reason whatsoever and then get banged up by Truck-kun are not.
Anyways, this was good, but a risky kind of good, since it seems like this male gaze will continue to be around as Rudy gets older.
Update: Dropped after learning Rudy was a paedophile in his past life.
Update 2: Apparently the anime toned down this paedophilic tendency of Rudy’s, so...now the verdict is that I move on while I let other people tell me if this is true of the anime or not.
Kemono Jihen 1
“Kemono Jihen” means something like “creature incidents”. I wonder why Funimation didn’t change the name…?
Kabane means “summer wing”.
Kanoko Villa, I’d assume, is named after the deer (the name means “deer’s child”).
My experience with Sho Aimoto (creator of this manga) is reading a bit of Hokenshitsu no Shinigami. (That, by the way, reminds me of Nube, but it’s nothing spectacular.) However, Hokenshitsu no Shinigami has a very detailed artstyle…That’s why I’m pretty shocked Kemono Jihen has such a scratchy one…
Ooh, edamame!
Oh, I see…this is like Furuba or a werewolf story, huh? Rather than a Natsume Yuujincho sort of thing.
…I thought Inugami and Dorotabo had seen everything of each other because of bathing together…I guess not, then.
…is Yataro going to die?
It seems the “immortal demons” are oni, so…why subtitle them as “immortal demons” and not just “demons”?
Ohhhhhhhh…this shite’s good. It seems to have a throwback feeling to it, moreso than even Yashahime or a lot of the sequels I’ve seen recently.
Cells at Work!! 2
I was going to move right along to Wonder Egg Priority because I’m really behind on the debuts right now, but I accidentally opened this up while I was cleaning up so I might as well watch another episode or two before setting it aside.
He’s dead, Jim. (<-joking)
…gosh, these walls look like Hover all over again and that’s from 1995…
LOL, these background cells don’t even have any details. They’re basically stick figures with fat bodies…
I think that phrase that appeared, “Take good care of B Cell!”, may be a pun on Give My Regards to Black Jack (written with similar Japanese, “B Cell wo Yoroshiku!” vs. “Black Jack ni Yoroshiku!”).
LOL, “you sure have the guts”…while they’re in the guts.
The certificate says something about it being presented to someone in the face of bravery, I think (<- just looked at it briefly).
“You have a good head on your shoulders,” says the T cell as WBC struggles with the disguise…stuck on his head.
Wonder Egg Priority 1
I’ve been hearing this series is surreal, but no more surreal than Flip Flappers. So…I don’t know if I’ll like it or not.
What’s this K?(?96…?
There’s a sunflower on her raincoat…so that’s why I saw a post called “You’re the sunflower”. Personally, that just reminds me of Post Malone.
Those Seeno Evils…they’re CGI, aren’t they?
As Boueibu once said (but I may be paraphrasing here), “nothing is more scary than free”.
…to be honest with you, I haven’t had a best friend for at least 2 years now. I only really feel close to people who are like me and who I have sustained contact with over many years, so I end up cutting contact with people after we part ways and never trying to fix it.
I always find it slightly absurd when anime girls get a little pudgy and go, “I’m so fat!” (See, for instance, the Dumbbell series.) Or, in this case, Ai’s going, “I’m so ugly!” when there’s nothing wrong with her. She’s only a bit different from everyone else due to her heterochromia - she doesn't have any physical or mental difficulties.
IChu 1
Here for Ume and, of course, dem bois. Bring it!
I seem to remember one of the magazines called an “Ichu” “an idol egg” (i.e. a fledgling idol)…More egg puns for me, then.
I found him! Ume! He’s Akira Mitsurugi! Update: Turns out that’s Toshiyuki Toyonaga…Oops. (Ume is actually Lucas from I*B.)
Huh? For a second, I imagined Akira with a dubbed voice. Of course, I could only be dreaming, because idol anime normally don’t get dubs, but…it was interesting to think about.
LOL, “Onsta”.
This Akio-type character is popular lately. The sort who’s timid but has an outstanding talent they themselves might not see.
…uh, but Kocho means “Principal”…?
An idol bear?!
Torahiko is crazy…(Note the tigers. Tora = tiger.)
Specifically, that’s black coffee with no sugar.
As much as I want to keep watching this, I’ll hit pause on it here. There’s much better offerings this season.
YuruCamp s2 1
…grandpa’s writing is so…neat.
*glares at CGI car…*
This OP just doesn’t compare to Shiny Days, y’know…?
OOPArts.
Talking pine cones! They’re back!
Curry rice! Literally had some of the Japanese-style stuff the other day. It was great.
All this talk about jobs…I personally don’t like jobs because I like to work at my own pace (hence one reason why I’m working on being a translator), but…money…I’m jealous, girls.
I’m trying not to rely on the subs for those texts that appear on the screen so that I can keep my reading skills up…I kept up with them for the most part…but then I got distracted by the croquette sign at one point…
“…buy you some local food?” – That’s omiyage, normally translated “souvenirs”. “Local food” actually does make more sense in that gap, though.
…man, I’m jealous that the girls all got jobs suitable for their personalities and everything. Lil’ ol’ antisocial me sucks at retail, even after 2 years.
Design-bu 1
LOL, that man and his bunny. Update: That’s Unabara-san.
…geez, these utaite are everywhere now. I’ve seen 96neko, USSS, Eve and more being more central to anime song creation…
Thise characters in the OP seal (<-the stamp, not the animal) are saiyou, meaning “recruited”, or in this case, “accepted”.
OEM = original equipment manufacturer.
Hrm…you can tell it’s a giraffe by description, but…that “base everything on the horse” is interesting as you could count several things as horse derivatives. Also, the angels’ names are all standard Japanese names with natural components to them (Ueda = upright rice field, Shimoda = frost rice field etc).
Is this pink-themed guy…a guy? Or a crossdresser? Update: That’s Kanamori-san.
I like how the suits have little wing-like flaps. Also the wings on Shimoda’s back.
…I never thought an anime episode would make me so concerned about giraffes.
That guy in the green I remember from the Wave x Tendebu (Heaven’s Design Team) collab, his name is Kimura.
Oh, so there is a bird like that!
The random wiggling the chibis do in these short segments…it’s a bit disorienting. (<-Just a small quibble of mine.)
Oh! Galapagos effect!
Agonistic: “polemical; combative.” I thought they meant “antagonistic”.
Oh man, that punch line was great! It took me a while to get into the spirit of it, but this anime is great!
Update: Oh, that’s where those nature names come from! They’re actually meant to be gods! (Or…named after gods…?) Also, Ueda vs. Shimoda (the “shimo” could be the kanji for “below”).
Ex-Arm 1
I’ve heard this anime looks bad…even well before its debut. How bad? Let’s find out.
*stifles laughter* From the first pan, I know this anime is doomed on my list. Even Praeter was better than this!
*stifles laughter again* This OP really does look as bad as the stuff I was seeing prior to winter 2021! Like a game I shouldn’t take out of my archives! (It’s not as bad as Hover’s graphics, but still…that’s from 1995. Cut it some slack.)
That’s the 2nd Kimura this season…
Yugg is just…ugly. Never try to render elaborate eyelashes in CGI again, people.
Dimension High School was better than this because at least that had puzzles. This is even jankier than that!
Wait, why is Akira 3D when his dad is 2D? It’s not that obvious, but I notice these things. Update: That’s not his dad…but close enough. (That’s his brother.)
…and here comes Truck-kun! (LOL)
This would be good…if it weren’t rendered in the jankiest CGI known to man…
Alma’s gun strike doesn’t have a lot of force to it.
The fire is rendered so terribly…*stifles laughter*
This part with a disembodied Akira is what I assume I got up at 6 am for…but I can’t hear it, due to background noise. Remind me to confirm this later. (Minami’s mouth is rendered so terribly…augh.)
No force to any of these recent motions, either.
LOL, this censorship.
Wave 1
Ever since this project was announced, I’ve been watching developments unfold on Anime News Network. I knew it would get an anime or something similar I could follow…and now here I am. I mentioned in the Sk8 comments I have basically zero knowledge of surfing, so…this is very unexpected, in one sense.
Was that a drone…?
“Wizard of the Waifu Board”?! Are you kidding me?! (LOL)
There seem to be shots where I can see the CGI here, but…anything’s better than Ex-Arm. Let’s say that.
Actually…yappe is a derivative of yabai, meaning “cool” or “crap” (in an ironic sense). So it would probably be better to translate it as “Surfing’s the greatest!” or “Surfing’s the coolest!” Anyways, what I was thinking before I was going to say this was that the waves are so enticingly animated, it feels like a summer anime. Basically the only other anime I’ve ever said that for is Grand Blue.
If I’m understanding where Isokichi’s name comes from right, “iso” is the character for seashore or a rocky beach (磯).
LOL, the teacher just wrote “Show must go on.”
Hayama, Kanagawa. Kanagawa’s capital is Yokohama, so it’s not quite Tokyo, but somewhat close.
“Murphy”? I have zero clue what that means.
Oh, I see. The title is translated that way due to context. Now that I can accept.
I just burst out into laughter when I realised Nalu hasn’t dropped or put down his ukulele once.
BSD Wan! 1
Here comes my past to haunt me…aside from me being a fan of BSD, I’m here because I influenced this series. How so? Once upon a time in the now-distant year of 2016, I was a scanlator for a brief period. Most of the work I’ve done hasn’t influenced the world at large, but this is the most influential manga I had a hand in working on.
Oh no! They’re starting with the dog AU?! (That comes from pretty far into the manga, IIRC. Further than my work was on it, at least.)
It’s Rashomon, but Rashoken (that last bit means “dog”). Hence Ruffshomon.
Basically, they just insert dog-related words everywhere…don’t make me explain every one!
Ouch, I can only imagine how much pain it was to translate Inu Shikkaku. Literally, it’s “No Longer a Dog”, but how would anyone make it in line with the other puns…?
I wasn’t fully aware of how the dog AU was connected to the main Wan series because I haven’t really looked at it after I quit due to aggregators, but…that was a nice fakeout. Also, I was concerned as to whether this was going to be a full-length ep or a short…seems like it’s a 10 minute short, so I have more chances of taking it.
…oh gosh, that pose! I remember it! I worked on this one! (Now that I know it’s a TV short, I won’t cover future episodes, but I want to at least finish this one because I started it.)
I think they added a bit there. I remember Kunikida’s and Yosano’s were in the manga, but not the other members or Fukuzawa going “the wind is smiling” + Kenji working on the roof at the start.
Oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I remember Rampo. I think I had to approximate how he would say stuff with Pocky in his mouth, but Slug (current scanlator) went the extra mile and stuck food in his mouth to do the same panel.
It seems to make a short ep., they strung a bunch of the chapters together. Also, I don’t think we ever found out what Yosano’s puddle was and that was…probably for the better.
Oh yeah…I think I remember this one.
Now I remember it! I remember having fun explaining what a youkan was.
Whoa, Higuchi scrapped the SFX! That wasn’t in the original…
The ED seems to be an Atsushi cover of Namae wo Yobu yo.
Oh noooooooooooo! The flower gazing episode! That’s the one I remember most, because I was trying to figure out how to translate 移動 while making it smooth-sounding English…(I remember the final result was something like, “Move! Move~!”
Dr Stone: Stone Wars 1
Final debut! Let’s go~!
The last time this series was on the air was about 1 year ago. I can remember that far back…
I like how that recap is framed as Gen talking to the kids.
Senku overcomes every problem with science.
…not much to comment on here.

Persephone in Disney’s “Hercules”
After doing my write-up on “Jasper in Deadland”, which doesn’t actually have the myth of Persephone in it but does have her and Hades as characters, I found myself thinking, ‘why don’t I do more write-ups about media that has Persephone in it even if her myth isn’t directly addressed?’ And once I had that thought, I decided I should talk about Disney’s “Hercules,” which is probably just as famous for its portrayal of Hades as it is for literally anything else about it.
I think anyone’s automatic thought when I say Persephone in Disney’s “Hercules” is that she’s not actually in the movie at all and that’s not actually correct.
Tumblr media
I’m not crazy about her design but it’s not the worst thing. Why is she so blonde when most of the other gods seem to be more monochromatic (and as I’ve said before I’m not into blonde Persephone)? In fact, her lack of monochrome makes me wonder if they might have intended other things for her since the gods who aren’t mostly one color in general have more importance in the narrative. Also her earrings are probably supposed to be leaves but they look more like feathers to me.
Persephone is only in the background of the pantheon scenes with her standing next to her mother in the opening scene and being one of the gods to crowd around Hercules at the end. So what is there to talk about? That. The fact that she is there and the fact that she is only in the background. This is important. In some stories this would be a minor detail that just shows that someone did their homework, but in this story where Hades is the main villain and easily the most memorable character, there’s a discussion to be had.
Before I get into depth about the villain aspect, I want to point out the fact that villains of the Disney Renaissance era are some of the most often cited when someone wants to have a discussion about queer coding in media and Hades’ name comes up basically every time. To me, he reads more like a sleazy used car salesman than a queer-coded villain (I think Radcliffe from “Pocahontas” or Ursula from “Little Mermaid” are more straight forward examples to point out for a straight audience) but there are definitely moments in the film where you can see this; his gay best friend-esque dialogues with Meg are pretty notable. That being said, this Hades being into ladies would not feel incorrect to me, a queer. Isn’t every Hades at least a touch bisexual (and everyone in Greek mythology for that matter)? Happy Pride!
So moving past the queer-coding discussion, we get to the villain issue. Giving a villain someone to love is going to change the dynamic of the villain and the story and is a really complicated choice for most writers. There’s a reason why every live action movie with the Joker in it has either had no Harley Quinn or Harley was the main character and the Joker was secondary. And they happen to be a couple with a bad relationship where you could easily have one of them throw the other under a bus if needed! Including Persephone in this story as Hades’ wife would mean that it would be really hard to make Hades the villain. In almost every medium where Hades has a Persephone, he isn’t presented as a villain but instead strictly lawful neutral, and you could still have a funny Hades who’s lawful neutral (look at “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” or “Jasper In Deadland” for example).
Sure, there’s the option of making Persephone a villain too, but while there’s no real precedence to make Hades a villain outside of a lot of conflating him with the devil through incorrect translations and confusion, there is absolutely no precedence to make Persephone a villain. Hades’ villainy already only works in this story because they have set it up that Zeus single-handedly won the Titanomachy and assigned the Underworld to Hades, leaving him bitter about it. In some versions of the myth of Persephone, Hades’ bitterness at his lot in the Underworld is actually the driving force behind him wanting a wife in the first place. Persephone would likely be a placating force for Hades, causing the more straightforward hero-villain narrative to not work and Disney’s shtick at this time was very much about straightforward hero-villain narratives.
There’s also the general problem that Persephone’s presence would make Hades WAY too powerful as this amazing Tumblr post discusses.
So Persephone as a villain is bizarre and she would likely be a positive thing for Hades. What if they had a relationship that was bad i.e. Joker/Harley? It would be a complete Greek God couple inversion since this movie shows Zeus and Hera as a happy couple (again, the goal was to simplify; this is also why Hercules is their child isn’t of Zeus and Alcmene). Well, then you basically have the horrible “Lightning Thief” movie (which I should maybe write about some time) and honestly, I think it would read really badly. If you don’t get why, go watch that film (but don’t, it’s terrible). Hades is unique is the Disney villain pantheon because he’s so likable and while he does bad things, his motives make a bit more sense than a lot of Disney villains. I think giving him a wife who he’s mean to would not only decrease his likability substantially but I think it would also be kind of controversial. Hades certainly wouldn’t be the iconic character that he is. It would also likely distract from the amount of time he spends interacting with Meg, who is not just a love interest to Hercules but a hugely important factor in the plot. Even if Persephone is equally mean to him, I think you’d still end up in this problem of having to address how two people who hate each other ended up married and then you’re into having to pose Hades as a kidnapper who regrets his choices. Also, I think in 1997 the married-couple-who-hate-each-other trope was mercifully on its way out.
So what if Hades and Persephone are married and it’s a decent marriage but Persephone just doesn’t know about any of his evil plans? That’s workable. Hades’ original plan to kill Hercules is pretty quietly done, and his all out war plan could have involved her being cooped up in Elysium and oblivious. Heck, you could even have the movie play out entirely as is until the scene where he’s enslaving the gods and then suddenly they see each other and he’s like, “Good news, honey! Soon everywhere will be my domain and you won’t have to be cooped up underground half the year!” and she’s like, “Is this what you were planning in your office every night?! You complete idiot!” That would kind of even give Hades more motive without having to mess with Persephone’s character.
I haven’t really touched on what might actually be the most obvious answer of why Persephone is in this movie but not as Hades’ wife: that just hasn’t happened yet. I’m sure this is the argument anyone who worked on the film would make. Okay, sure, there are no winter scenes in the film, but that whole thing is implied to happen long before any of the famous demigods are born. Perhaps this is just the answer. Although I think he’d have a much harder time winning her over now after he, you know, tried to take over the world.
The life of Disney’s “Hercules” Hades didn’t actually end with the film by the way. In the television show, which would have been the perfect place to tell the myth of Persephone, Hades actually has a crush on Aphrodite instead. While it’s kind of cute to give him a crush in general, why did they give up on this prime myth real estate to make this up out of nowhere? And it did in fact make him more sympathetic, but he’s also just far less villainous in the show. Disney just can’t stop with this Hades redemption and romance arc thing either. In the third “Descendants” movie, Hades is there as Mal’s father meaning that he canonically had sex with Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty.” I had to lie down after that one. But it’s worth noting that while he’s a totally absent father until the point that this film happens, he has his reasons, his characterization in that movie is 100% sympathetic, and he’s not a villain at all.
Gosh, Disney. Just give the man his wife already!
(And in case you were wondering, there is some really cute fan art out there of these two if you have a burning need.)

Thoughts/ Background The Deathly Hallows Part Two
The introduction music is so haunting. The castle in all its glory is haunted by dementors and fog. Snape is solitary. Everything is singular and empty on the grounds. The only color we see at Hogwarts during this time is during the final battle when McGonagall pushes Harry out of the way, and we see that flash of fire from her wand. That’s when you know stuff is about to kick off.
Griphook sounds so lost as to why Harry would bury Dobby. The divide between creatures and wizards, between goblins and wizards has gotten so great that neither side even thinks to assume that the other possesses even the smallest hint of kindness or humility. This is a fic all in itself.
What are the goblins stake in the sword? What is with the mention of the tiara in the books? I feel like Rowling had more to say about this topic, but for some reason she didn’t.
I hate that Fleur seems to be so meek in this movie. I want her to be this badass fighter chick, the kind of person who the Goblet of Fire would chose once again to play one of the most challenging games ever, the kind of person who would leave her country and family for an amazing opportunity and adventure, but her character wasn’t given much time or space to be free to show itself in that manner.
Wandlore is super fascinating. Is there a book about wandlore? Like a companion book like Quidditch Through the Ages? I feel like there should be.
It looks like that is a quilt patch behind Harry’s head. It would have been a gift from Mrs. Weasley.
It always bothered me that Luna was just like, “Yeah, I’m going back to school.” They just locked her butt up in the dungeons, and then she decides to go back to a school where the people who locked her up are currently in power and could torture her for information about the whereabouts of Harry Potter, the person she literally just escaped with. I think, that’s why this scene was cut from the final cut of the basic DVD versions.
Ron is so quick here to be like, “They suspect us. They suspect us.” But the silence doesn’t go on for that long. It feels like someone with such an iron gut gets antsy really quickly, and not antsy like sweating a bit, but antsy like he’s about to start crying. It just seems weird. One of the basic security measures to the bank might be that they have like a gas that leaks through that makes people feel paranoid or something like that. You want to get 200 galleons out, but what happens if you get robbed on the way out the door? Better to only get 100, thus keeping money in the bank under the goblins eyes. It would help keep out thieves as well, petty and otherwise.
None of the other goblins think that something is off with the behavior of this one goblin who seems to be in a positon of authority?
Goblins are keyed into the various vaults? Which means that they could seal them at any time as well, right? Is this in the books?
Hermione, baby, your Gryffindor is showing, and it is SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol
Those goblins are like, “Assume the fire breathing position.”
You can see how deep down they are. And I know this isn’t real, but to think that that dragon would have only had that small opening of real light shining down on it all that time is truly depressing.
Litearlly, they all deserve to bite it after what that dragon was put through.
“And he’s homicidal.”
“We plan, we get there, all hell breaks loose.” I feel that.
I always assumed that Voldemort when to Gringotts and killed the goblins. But no, he summoned them to Malfoy Manor, and then killed them. Why would he do it like that?
That mirror is rectangular, but I always envisioned the mirrors as being circular.
Why does Aberforth tell them that the Order is finished? He knows that it isn’t. This whole speech of his is very demoralizing. But Harry dgaf…..
This, “I trusted the man I knew” attitude is why Harry named one of his children Albus Severus.
Hermione is the one who asks questions of Aberforth, and yet, he directly responds to Harry. I always thought that was odd.
And Aberforth has been helping them the whole time? Then why the speech?
Neville badass Longbottom.
Another nod to the books.
I wanted some more information about what was going on in Hogwarts while Harry, Ron, and Hermione were on the run. I wanted to hear more about what Dumbledore’s Army were getting up to while the others were hunting horcruxes. There were tasters of it in the book, but I would have loved to have had more of it tbh.
Fact: Neville’s plant from five is the mascot for the Hogwart’s resistance.
“She gots lost of those, hasn’t she?” This line from Seamus at the very beginning of this movie just made it so perfect. This movie is a gosh dang masterpiece.
Snape had such a hard job. I mean, I know people hate on Snape, and I can understand their reasoning, but I have a soft spot for the man. Maybe I read too much fanfiction because fanfic!Snape and canon!Snape are two very different individuals.
Harry’s name among these students is the stuff of legend. The way they all look around and start talking carries that spark of hope that good rumors sometimes have.
Harry, “Perfect timing group.”
People back up when Harry faces Snape. People move the hell out of dodge when McGonagall draws her wand.
Snape takes out the two Carrows behind him before he apparates out of the school.
Padma gets zero dances at the Yule Ball, and then Voldemort invades her mind. Great.
Pansy, my darling, there is a time to speak and there is a time to stay silent. Read the room.
Filch, ditto.
Why do all of the magical, “evil” Slytherins allow Filch, a squib, to lock them up?
Even the portraits are getting out of there.
All the kids in the background are completely flummoxed.
“Boom!”
Say that five times fast. No, say it once without messing up and you get to be bff’s with Maggie Smith.
This spell is sick, this music is sick, McGonagall is a queen. When I saw this in theater, my skin got goose pimples. “Do your duty for our school!” It is just so amazing, and iconic. This whole scene makes me feel so empowered, and pumped like I’m about to head into battle, like I’m about to defend my home and my life.
My thoughts on the diadem and the other founders objects can be found in a post that I made. My thoughts are strong, and though they aren’t canon, they are still unspoken canon.
Voldemort is like, “I was about to monologue. Why you speaking to me?”
“You okay, Freddie?” Don’t come at me like that, writers.
We all died laughing in the theater when Ron said that. “Harry talks in his sleep.” Harry only speaking parseltongue when around snakes theory is still enforced when you think about the snake Pettigrew sneaking around the whole time.
Exactly why the fuck does Remus need Tonks more than her small child? I never understood this line, and I never liked them as a couple. Thought the book version was creepy, and the movie version unrealized.
Some movies really don’t need to be split into two for the ending *Divergent trilogy* but this one really benefitted from having two films. I wouldn’t want this huge battle scene and character plot and humor to be lost.
No one thinks to cast a spell to catch Neville??? This is like the first flying lesson all over again.
Go, Mr. Weasley, you are on fire.
Kingsley, whip their arses with that fancy shit. LET’S GO!!!!!!
Harry reached out to Ginny first. This movie is so lacking in any real chemistry between these two actors and characters that it is almost painful. This is one instance, that I never noticed before, that makes all of their other interactions less cringey to watch.
Neville almost died on that bridge. He might as well tell Luna how he feels. I love this and can fully ship canon book couples with canon movie couples at the same time. Thank you very much.
That kiss between them is so weird. I just can’t.
Hermione in this scene is proof that men rattle your brain with smooches. Lol
So, if you are using the room of requirement for something, and someone who already has been in that same room, and wants it for the same reason that you do, they can get in as well? But not if they want it for the same reason, which is why Umbridge couldn’t be get it in Order of the Phoenix.”
There are so many Easter eggs in this scene in the ROR. You can see a chess piece from 1, pixies from 2. It just enforces my headcanon that the house elves use the ROR as a sort of dumping ground for the random stuff that they find at the school.
Harry is so gosh dang blasé about seeing Draco again. He’s just like, “What’s up, dude?” He is not concerned in the slightest that he has three wands pointed at him right now. They are just causally chatting about whose wand each other has got.
The statue of the pig right behind Harry and Hermione. It would make sense Voldemort would try to totally remake Hogwarts, and I think that would go into removing those odd little things that make the castle a bit quirky. The castle looks bleak and unnaturally bland compared to the other movies. It would make sense that he would want statues of hogs also taken out.
You see the lanterns that Slughorn had at his Christmas party.
Why is the fire morphing into different animals? The phoenix attacks Draco, Blaise, and Goyle, the tiger chases Ron and Hermione, and then the snake goes after Harry. And then they all converge on the trio? Why make it animals? Is there any significance to this? I never noticed that they were actually animals before.
Finding the brooms perfect. Saving them perfect. Killing the horcrux then kicking it into the flames. Perfect.
The music while the trio are fighting to get to boat house is so haunting and lovely and it’s like it calls to every nostalgic atom in your body.
Really, death eater, you’ve got time to stop and cast the cruciatus on someone in the middle of this warzone?
I love that Hermione was the one to blast Fenrir away from Lavender. So touching.
Aberforth, Mr. IT IS ALL GOING TO END HORRIBLY WHY EVEN TRY, has enough hope and good memories to cast away that many dementors. Yeah, he’s fake.
Voldemort just doesn’t like that Snape is taller than him.
I just wanted a touch of the friendship that was expressed between Lily and Snape in the book. Harry understood it, and said it perfectly at the end of book seven. I wanted some of that to translate to screen. It wasn’t just because Snape had some weird crush on her it was because they were friends, best friends. Ron and Harry and Hermione friendship. The next time someone comes at me with that bull I’m just going to refer them back to the facts.
This is probably the first time that Snape had ever been allowed to really look at Harry as a person rather than someone who is supposed to hate him. It is the first time that he could be unguarded around him.
Snape hired more healers. Why else would they be there? He knew that with the group in charge that as in power, that they would be needed.
I can’t stand this barrage of lost souls. It is painful, and I get flashbacks from when I read the book for the first time, and the pages were covered in my tears.
It doesn’t look like Snape even has anything in this office. It looks barren. He knew he had no time to get comfortable in his position.
That tree is beautiful.
I love their friendship. I will always love their friendship.
Look at Snape and all those books. Lily and Snape, the studious, top of their year duo with the Marauders who eschew libraries but still manage to succeed. I don’t need to think hard to imagine the rivalry. In fact, I did imagine it, and wrote some down in the thing, message me if you would like part of the thing.
Hermione knew, or at least, strongly suspected that Harry was going to have to do what he sets off to accomplish, for sure.
I love that when Harry walked into the forest to face down death that he had these people, these guardians, these people who at one point or another swore to protect this boy with everything that they have get to be the ones that are with him at the end just like at the beginning. Things are different for them, and different from how they thought it would be when Harry was born into this world, but they still kept their promise.
“Does it hurt?” This is something that a child asks. We forget that Harry, here, is only supposed to be 17 years old, that’s a kid. Added to that, you have the very real
“We’re here, you see?” Perfect.
“Stay close to me?” “Always.”
My thoughts mean nothing in the perfection of this scene.
Hagrid is still looking out for Harry’s best interest. He is the only adult worth a flip in more than half of these films.
“The boy who lived come to die.”
I know Dumbledore is like, “The man” here, and the mentor or whatever, but I would have really have liked to have the person who met Harry at Kings Cross had been Snape especially after harry had just learned the truth. Way more dynamic.
Narcissa straight up lied to the most dangerous wizard ever. She deserved that pardon for her family. All she wanted was out, and to take care of her son, and I respect that. Don’t give a dang for the rest of the world when they would gladly let you burn. Take care of number one even when number one is a group instead of a single entity.
You hear that noise when Neville picks up the hat, and if you read the books, you know what he just found. He was out there preparing and scouting for another battle, and Hogwarts rewarded him.
Hagrid carrying in Harry’s body was so painful to watch. Visually, there little death parade plus the music just puts you in this anxious state. Pinpricks.
The acting by Bonnie Wright here is superb. The lack of chemistry is not equally weighted on her shoulders.
Luna looks at Draco like she is sick. Then like she is sad. I hate it. She was wishing for something else there for sure.
The way Dean Thomas looks at Voldemort in this scene is the way that I feel about that weird af hug.
Voldemort has to restrain himself from killing Neville on the spot for interrupting him.
Neville has never in the course of these movies failed to speak when needed. He stood up to the trio in 1, and he spoke up against Seamus and nearly everyone else in the common room in Ootp. Neville stands up for what is right.
All of those death eaters are like, “Fuck! This boy came back to life again? What are the Dark Lord’s AK’s broken? Nevermind, fuck this shit, I’m out.”
That music when Neville regains consciousness. YES!
See, if Voldemort didn’t play with his food, he might have won.
NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU BITCH!!!! When I say people cheered and screamed in the theater when Molly said and did this epic shit I ain’t kidding. IT WAS AND STILL IS ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC HP QUOTES OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONE OF THE BEST, MOST EMPOWERING QUOTES!!!!!!! We all want Molly Weasley to have our backs like this.
The whole ending of this movie is LEGENDARY!!!! I went to the midnight showing for the release of this movie with a bunch of other diehards, and seeing Neville cut the head off of the snake, and watching Harry finally beat Voldemort with the elder wand. I mean, we were literally just in such a state of excitement and yes and hallelujah, it was insane.
Neville and Luna. I see y’all.
Percy is talking to Arthur, reconciling.
That guy behind Cho is definitely about to shoot his shot with someone.
Filch, bless his heart.
Ron and Hermione. Harry knows. Harry blesses this union. Harry has been the number one ship captain this whole time, and now he is rewarded.
I like that Harry snapped the wand in the movie. See, if book Harry had snapped the wand, the Cursed Child would have never graced our consciousness with its heteronormative agenda. Scorbus is life. Fight me.
This series has had such a serious impact on me. I love it. I spend hours upon hours inside of this universe every day as beloved fanfiction writers play inside of it’s territory. It made me a reader. It helped me when I wasn’t sure what was next for me in life. It gave me entertainment and enjoyment, and still does. I love it, and I hope that I always will. We cling to the thought of magic because we hope that it is really, we hope that like in this world where there is magic that cannot be easily be explained exists. We hope that in our world, too, there is that same kind of magic that can wrap itself around us.
I think that kind of magic is real. I just think that we have to look for it, remember it, talk about, cherish it, and spread it around for others who have forgotten to look for it themselves. And great literature, like this series, helps us to do that.
That is why it will be remembered for generations to come. At least, if I have anything to say about it.

A Promise Kept (OH/WT Crossover, Harper Emery & Ellen Thompson, Friendship)
Tumblr media
As anticipated, my very first (official) crossover fanfic for the entry Friendship of the @choicesjulychallenge hosted by @kinda-iconic  ❤️
As I was playing Wishful Thinking I had this crazy idea: I started picturing an Ellen Thompson & Harper Emery friendship. They’re about the same age, they’re both devoted and esteemed professionals (dealing with scumbags like Ellen’s boss and Declan Nash *cough cough*)...long story short a friend-ship canon started shaping. And that’s the result: hope you like it!
Disclaimer: The fic contains a reference to this previous work as well as a personal background and FC (Gugu Mbatha-Raw is not the perfect FC but I get Harper vibes) for Dr. Emery
Prompt: Friendship
Word Count: 1988

"Holy crap! How come I missed this?"
Aurora froze gaping at the box placed on her aunt's new desk. She stopped by to return her set of keys before starting her shift and found Harper unpacking her stuff in her new, well previous smaller yet comfortable office as "Head of Neurosurgery, Edenbrook Hospital". She had never been there before: she had only seen it during video calls but it was the first time she actually set foot there. There were a couple of boxes around filled with the little decor the place needed: her aunt's degrees, a few framed photos (graduation picture with beaming Dad, Grandpa and Nana; a rare shot of Harper and her mentor, Dr. Rabinovits, posing for the cameras and was that Alexander Evans, that former patient she heard of? Well, probably a family photo of the Evans wearing Santa hats), a small ebony sculpture, a painting of a Caribbean landscape and a set of wrist and hand stretchers. Books had already been organized over the shelves.
But that one...that was unexpected.
"What, Rory?" Harper asked, checking her bookcase.
Aurora's fingers grazed a frame before picking her up in her hands.
"You have been interviewed by Ellen Thompson? The Ellen Thompson?" she asked, showing the newspaper article that caught her attention.
Harper slowly diverted her eyes from her previous chore and let them linger a moment over the old article before moving closer and gently taking it from Rory's hands. A tiny smile filled with nostalgia formed on her lips: her younger self flashing an enigmatic smile to the camera casually sit on her desk was still in the dark of the tough challenges her career had in store for her. She was just happy, proud of herself; she was just forgetting for a moment the harsh reality of "that cruel science called neurosurgery", as Dr. Rabinovits put it. But the memory of that day was pleasant, comforting in a way.
"Yes, it was her last article she wrote before being promoted daytime anchor. I thought you knew? I'm pretty sure Nana has a copy of this, Marcus too probably..."
"Yeah probably...I must have missed it. I was too busy with college and my dissertation at the time probably..." Aurora considered. "But how?! I mean, I'm not trying to belittle your achievement, it's just...Ellen!"
"I know, I was surprised too at the time" Harper laughed softly.
"I bet!"
"I didn't think she would accept it. Because of bias, you know? She confessed that it had been quite a tough call for her, she's an incredibly talented professional and being accused of being biased is a capital sin in her field..."
"Biased? How could she be biased?" Aurora furrowed her brows, confused.
Harper took a pause and gave her an amused look.
"Because we're friends, Rory! Don't you remember?"
"You're friends??" Aurora gaped, plopping down on the sofa. "I really slept on this for years?"
"Well, we don't see each other as often as we once did now but we never truly drifted apart. And oh, you were probably too young to remember but she attended my graduation. Nana probably has pictures of that day...there was a small group of friends celebrating with us: you surely remember Bethany - she visited a few months ago, Nate, her college boyfriend, Ricardo, Alison, Elliott-"
"Oh I do remember Elliott! Your college sweetheart, dressed up to the nines and all googly eyes" the young Emery giggled.
"Glad you remember" Harper made a scene of rolling her eyes, smiling. "...and the most elegant of all was Ellen. That Ellen"
Aurora took a moment to reminisce the few memories she had of that day. Yes, probably...no surely! That girl in a gorgeous pink dress clinging her glass and chatting with Nana was Ellen. And...oh gosh, her younger self had even been so nosy to ask Ellen, that Ellen where she bought that dress because she wanted one just like hers. Luckily, Harper spoke again, saving Rory from the embarrassment of that moment.
"As I said we had somehow kept in touch over the years, against all odds. We were both so busy...her internships, her field jobs, my residency. But we managed to check on each other every now and then. Small things, even just a message in the voicemail or a quick call"
She smiled - a quick soft smile- and handed the framed article back to Aurora.
"When I became 'the youngest Head of Neurosurgery in the history of Massachusetts' she showed up at my door" she said, nodding behind her. "And announced that she was gonna interview me. It wasn't even up for debate, she would have signed that article"
"The hell with the friendship bias?" the niece asked, more and more involved in the story featuring two of her personal role model.
Harper smiled again, but it was a weaker one this time.
"Apparently so. She claimed that there were very good reasons to write it, even ethical reasons if you wish. She said that it was a story worth being told, that I could have inspired people out there, little girls in schools, things like that."
She sighed, shooking her head.
"Not sure I lived up to that inspirational role, but I tried, right?".
Aurora diverted her eyes: she knew what her aunt was referring to. She remembered the conversation they had the night before the hearing, their argument during the break of that hearing...and frowned.
The weight of the last few words lead to a brief silence, interrupted only by the sounds of steps along the corridor.
"Oh this must be Tanaka with Dr. Yannick. I asked them to stop by to sign those papers...excuse me, it won't be long"
That said, she hurried to meet the colleagues, leaving Aurora alone in her office.
The Emery girl absentmindedly eavesdropped the three of them discussing a surgical oncology procedure but she got lost in the surgical medicalese the doctors spoke. So her eyes fell on the article in her hands again. She started reading:
“A Promise Kept: Why You Should Know The Story Behind Edenbrook Hospital New Shining Star"
As some of you probably know, this will be my last article. Before you start getting sentimental about it, I do not regret it: I've spent so many years of my life typing behind a laptop and as much as they will always be an important, essential maybe, part of my life, I'm ready and eager for what comes next. You are going to hear my voice and see my face on your screen, brace yourself, dear readers.
I must confess that I was full of doubts about writing this article because I value ethics and professionalism. But I soon realized that ethics and professionalism are the main topics of this piece I'm writing and well, the very reason why this article should see the light of day.
So, for one last time, let me tell you a story.
More than a decade ago, I was a college student, an ambitious hard-working journalism major struggling over a research project. My professor asked the class to think outside the box and choose an issue we were not familiar with so that we were forced to document, do some real fact-checking and so on just like real reporters do. I spent hours in the library trying to find the perfect issue for a project I wanted to be A+, but nothing came. I was losing all hope when I noticed the notes of the girl sitting in front of me. They were complex anatomy schemes: she was a med student. Frustrated by my current situation, I did what I rarely do: ask for help. So I tapped her shoulder and asked her about controversial issues in the medical sphere she would like to see debated or brought in the spotlight. Just one, it was for a journalism project. The girl took her time to think about it then handed me a piece of paper with her answer:
Less than 19% of surgeons in this country are women and the percentage drops considerably if we consider specific specialties and women of color. It is a truth universally acknowledged yet publicly denied that women are still overlooked for surgical positions: the fair sex is emotional, tends to get to involved in the medical cases, not to mention potentially hysterical and suffering of that dangerous 'lack of refrain' so well known (?) to their male colleagues. They make better nurses than doctors and better GP than surgeons.
That was a promising start. I thanked the girl and wished her good luck with her upcoming exam. Actually, I saw that girl a few days later: she passed her exam with flying colors and was now standing by my side at a rally. We became friends and one night, the first night of our senior years we made a pinky promise: a solemn silly pinky promise not to give up no matter what obstacles we will have to face later in our careers. A solemn silly pinky promise to be one day the best journalist and best doctor we could ever be. For ourselves and the others out there.
Well, I'm glad and proud to announce that about fifteen years later, that mystery girl has become the youngest Head of Neurosurgeon in the history of Massachusetts. Daughter of an archeology professor and another legend in the surgical field, Eloise Emery, the Haitian born cardio surgeon who successfully performed the first domino heart transplant on pediatric patients at Mount Sinai Hospital, NY, in 1989, Harper Emery is already exceeding any reasonable expectation. Colleagues describe her as 'headstrong, devoted and passionate, a doctor who would go above and beyond for her patients' while prestigious medical magazines crowned her 'the most brilliant neurosurgeon of her generation”.
At first, I thought that I accepted to write this article because I know Harper Emery and I value and respect her dearly both as a friend and a professional. But that is not completely true.
I accepted to write this article because I know Harper Emery and I know that she will always keep her promise. She already did.
Good luck, Dr. Emery!
Author: Ellen Thompson
Aurora swallowed down the lump threatening to form in her throat: that was the aunt she knew and looked up to basically her whole life. An aunt she thought irremediably lost...but maybe she was wrong, after all. As that realization crossed her mind, her phone beeped. It was a message from...Dr. Trihn? It was a selfie of her new flatmates waiting for her at the cafeteria. They had already bought her a cappuccino and a saved her half donut. Oh right, 'roomies breakfast', she had almost forgotten. She cautiously placed the framed article on her aunt's desk and was about to exit the room when she almost bumped into Harper coming back to her office.
"Gotta roll?" she asked.
"Hm yeah. The new roomies want to grab a coffee together at the cafeteria...I suspect, no I'm afraid that is some kind of a 'shining happy people' ritual" Aurora sighed, hanging her head.
Her aunt chuckled at her reaction to a friendly gesture.
"I'm sure it's not as bad as it sounds." she teased then smiled. "Have fun, Rory!"
The Emery girl nodded, even though she wasn't fully convinced, and picked a set of keys out of her pocket.
"Oh here's the keys and...Aunt Harper? You should hang that article to the wall"
Dr. Emery threw her a quizzical look then joked:
"Because it was written by Ellen? It would certainly give me celebrity points to impress the poor souls visit-"
"No, Auntie, you got it all wrong. Hang it to inspire yourself"
Aurora flashed her a quick confident smile and left the room headed to the cafeteria as Harper met once again the fierce joyful gaze of her younger self smiling back at her behind the framed glass.

episode 14 thoughts
back to regular episodes! before i start, just wanna say thank you to everyone who’s been interacting with this blog <3 i never expected to have so many people coming into the ask box or even just liking/reblogging my thoughts, and i’m so happy and excited about it :’D
anyways though, in this episode, we get to learn some more about emma, her dynamic with akira, and also see how she is as a duelist!
Tumblr media
right off the bat, we further see how smart she is. she’s an incredibly talented hacker, as shown in the next few minutes, and though we don’t get to see her nearly as much as i would’ve liked to, i’m still glad we got her as a character.
akira and emma’s conversation in this episode makes more questions than it answers, but in a good way. i’ve always been a fan of when shows or books or what have you have two characters that know each other from before the start of the series, so we don’t have to build up their dynamic and we get to see it grow instead as we learn about the past. i know that kind of thing isn’t for everyone, but i’m a fan.
Tumblr media
we also find out that akira’s been demoted, and learn a couple things about his replacement. i’m betting everyone in his former department misses him quite a bit, lmao. but omg the super lame duelist AIs that are coming up in a few episodes. i remember them.
Tumblr media
right you are, emma!
also, can i just say, the lighting in this episode? it’s so good. both this scene and in LV. i really love the softer colors and the greenish coloring in LV this episode. sometimes, vrains can be really pretty.
Tumblr media
honestly? iconic.
lmao but really, i’m actually quite partial to hireship. i don’t think about them much nor do i actively go out of my way for content of them (and also, i do ship alter and pathway to some extent too), but they have a really fun dynamic and i like watching them interact lol.
i think it gives both of them some good characterization without relying on yusaku, too, which is another reason i’m a fan of the fact that they knew each other before canon started. a lot of ygo fall into the trap of making the MC the only way for some side characters to get any growth, and while like, i get it, i’m glad vrains manages to subvert that quite a bit.
to be fair, emma doesn’t get too much screen time in S2 and S3, but still, a lot of her growth comes from herself and her own relationships (i.e. with kengo), which i really appreciate.
anyways though,
Tumblr media
this is really random, but i’m pretty sure yusaku is the only one shown with a phone with a keyboard. it’s obvious the boy is very tight on money, considering all we ever see him eat is hotdogs at cafe nagi really, but this is really consistent with that and i like that.
i’m also lowkey jealous, bc as much as i like gacha games, i really miss having a blackberry LOL. with that, i’ve outed myself quite a bit, so moving on,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in vrains fashion, three things about this i really like:
1) seriously, the coloring during this duel is so nice. i really love looking at it. the animation for this episode is just really nice as a whole -- look at how soft playmaker looks here, oh my gosh -- but the filtering is what really gets me. the green tones look so natural and pleasant!
2) playmaker’s smiles. they get more and more rare as we go, so we must cherish each one lmao. actually though, i love the way he looks in that first cap.
3) what they’re saying actually kind of parallels yusaku’s speech to ai in their final duel, about how living has no solution and that ai thinks too much like an AI and not enough like a human, and it made me kind of sad. we get to see ai become fairly human throughout the series, but little reminders like this that he’s still not are hard to swallow after the finale.
moving on to less sad things:
Tumblr media
you say that, but you’re looking at a future duelist who can’t count, LOL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
honestly, this whole exchange was hilarious. vrains doesn’t often use too much humor in the later episodes, even later this season, so i’m enjoying it while i still can lol.
we then get to see emma do some fun altergeist shenanigans, and tbh, i wish she got to duel more. she’s not on the same level as, like, aoi obviously, but she’s a pretty decent duelist all things considered, and it makes me kinda sad that she only dueled seriously, what, 4 times in the whole show? and lost.... all of them? big oof.
Tumblr media
bahahaha, i hate to break it to you guys, but that....doesn’t happen. :’)
anyways, i have to take care of some stuff around the house, but i might be back later to watch another episode or two! it’s been so nice having this week off before i start my new job lmao. see y’all either later or tomorrow!

Doctor Sleep
Tumblr media
I’ve been a Stephen King ho my whole life. I first read The Shining when I was in fourth grade, which was likely a parenting fail on my mom’s part but then I got two degrees in English literature and I get paid to write my dumb thoughts about movies on the internet so actually take note parents, that’s what I call a bold Mother of the Year move! My point is - Stephen King stories are in my DNA so I was, as the kids say, hype for this movie. In this long-awaited sequel to The Shining, we catch up with little Danny Torrance (you know of “Redrum” fame, this time played by Ewan McGregor) all grow up, 39 years after his fateful stay at the Overlook hotel. He’s got a pretty good life now - he struggled through alcoholism (thanks, Dad) and got sober, he’s got a job at a hospice helping patients die peacefully with a little help from his special gifts - his Shine. Everything’s going peachy keen until he begins to get psychic communications from a young girl named Abra (a wildly charismatic Kyleigh Curran) who has a Shine of her own. It’s much stronger and more powerful than Danny’s ever was, and it’s caught the attention of some very bad people called the True Knot - and when I say people, I mean child murderers/vampires. Now Danny has to help protect Abra, and that means going back to confront some of his old demons at a very familiar condemned hotel in Colorado.
Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film version of The Shining is one of the most iconic horror films of all time (in spite of its total disregard for a lot of the most important content and themes of the novel but THAT’S NEITHER HERE NOR THERE), and those are some big shoes to fill. Is there any way Doctor Sleep can possibly live up to all of these sky high expectations? Well...
I loved it. I loved it so much more than I thought. I loved it more than the book, and almost as much as I love the novel of The Shining. Mike Flanagan knows how to make a HELL of a movie y’all. I’m gonna get a little spoilery because this one is a hard one to talk about without discussing its debts to Kubrick’s movie and King’s novels. SPOILER WARNING STARTS HERE SO GET READY.
Some thoughts:
Excellent and very potent first scene - I IMMEDIATELY love Rebecca Ferguson in the role of the True Knot’s leader, Rose the Hat. Wife pointed out that her speaking cadence is reminiscent of Pennywise, and it’s deliciously unnerving.
Director Mike Flanagan had a hell of a tightrope to walk between staying faithful to two vastly different source materials. I frankly love the ways in which he was able to stitch a story that made sense and felt emotionally rich (maybe even richer than the novel version of Doctor Sleep??) by bridging the gaps between Kubrick and King’s visions. Hallorann (Carl Lumbly who I haven’t seen since Alias days, but he was FANTASTIC here) is still present in Danny’s life even though he died in Kubrick’s movie/lived in King’s book. The compromise? He’s basically a Force ghost, an apparition that can communicate with Danny because of his Shine. Oh, so the Overlook blows up in King’s novel but is left standing at the end of Kubrick’s film? Well let’s go visit the moldering old broad and wander her halls, confront some ghosts, THEN blow her up. Every choice Flanagan makes works to create something new, thematically resonant, and transformative in the space in between the stories that came before. I can’t get over how much I enjoyed it.
I love the visual language of the boxes in Danny’s mind to trap the ghosts of the Overlook.
One of the things the 1980 film does so well is that iconic and haunting score. Obviously this film takes a lot of the same music cues, but one thing that is added this time is a recurrent heartbeat sound when people are Shining or otherwise reaching out with their minds to find someone or something. For a movie where so many things occur in the mind, this is a visceral connection to the bodies of our characters, bodies which are in real danger. It amps up the tension and dread in a fantastic way.
Honestly, I know Snakebite Andi (Emily Alyn Lind) is supposed to be a bad guy cause she’s with the True Knot and they’re all kinda sorta vampires or whatever, but if you found out you could make people do whatever you wanted and you used that power to rob pedophiles and scar them for life...yeah, I just don’t really have a problem with that.
Related - Snakebite Andi’s whole style and Rose the Hat’s whole style and their opposing hipster poles of hotness is uh. Really working for me.
Related related - I would let Rebecca Ferguson shotgun the fuck outta me too. I feel you, Snakebite Andi. If that’s what it takes to become a vampire, I will sign up for that gay ass newsletter.
What a delightful surprise to see Jacob Tremblay, the best working child actor today, in such a small, but significant part! Honestly, I’m a little shocked he took this role, but there are no small parts, just small actors :) And his performance is GUTTING in every way, so I’m glad they got an actor of this caliber for a pretty pivotal scene even if he’s not in the film for very long.
Speaking of small parts, by the end of the movie, I just felt really bad for the naked bathtub ghost lady from Room 217 (Sallye Hooks). She has to be gross and wet and naked for so long in the movie, just standing kind of hunched over being menacing, and I bet she got so cold even covered in rubber movie makeup stuff. Pour one out for commitment to the craft.
I get the tension of the moment, but I’m not sure that anyone would monologue for this long when digging up a child’s body from an unmarked grave but go off I guess. Just one of those things that works in a novel but feels SUPER weird in a film.
I love how many actors of color there are in meaty roles. This is color-blind casting at its finest.
The most unrealistic part of this entire movie about psychics and vampires is Danny driving up the mountain pass to the Overlook at night in the snow in a 1996 Toyota Camry.
References to The Dark Tower that made half of my Stephen-King-nerd-heart so happy: Jacob Tremblay’s baseball number is 19. The bus line Danny takes north is Tet Transit. The True Knot takes Jacob Tremblay to Lamerk ethanol plant. Hallorann tells Danny “Ka is a wheel” - and boy is it in this movie.
References to the 1980 The Shining that made the other half of my Stephen-King-nerd-heart so happy: Dr. Dalton’s office is EXACTLY the same as the office Jack Torrance interviews in to get the job as the caretaker of the Overlook. The first time Danny helps a hospice patient pass on, that patient is in Room 217. Abra’s house number is 1980 (year of the film). Numerous shots are exact duplicates, including the sweeping helicopter shot over the lake and the car driving up the mountain - these are literally the same shot used in Kubrick’s film, just swapped day-for-night and with snow falling added. Oh yeah and the ENTIRE FUCKING OVERLOOK is recreated in the most tender, incredible, breathtaking detail. This is fucking movie magic, you guys. It is MAGICAL.
Did I Cry? Oh god yes, much more than anticipated. Danny’s speech at AA once he’s 8 years sober? Sobbing. Each of Danny’s encounters with his hospice patients? Drowning. Jacob Tremblay shrieking in terror and pain? Waterworks. Danny’s final showdown with the Overlook itself and the things that walk within, including one all-too-familiar bartender? Weeping.
Maybe I just had the right level of expectations for this one, but gosh I was really blown away. If you’re a Stephen King fan - or if you like your dealing with family trauma delivered with a bit of ghost story thrown in, I highly encourage you to check out Doctor Sleep.

Aladdin (2019) review (contains spoilers)
So... I went to see “Aladdin” tonight and wanted to write down my thoughts. If you haven’t seen the movie yet and don’t want to get spoiled, don’t read any further.
The original Aladdin is good, but I very rarely re-watch it. So I didn’t have many expectations. But this live-action actually might be my favorite made so far, for so many reasons.
First… The Genie. While I have a huge respect for Williams and his work, I have watched the original movie in English only once, so I don’t have as strong emotional attachment to him as some others might have. When the trailers and clips came out, I knew from the moviemakers’ tweets and announcements that the production was still on going. Even so, I did not have any critizism for Will Smith’s performance or the CGI. But when I saw him on screen… gosh, he melted my heart. Him and the script added so much more depth to Genie’s story and his part and performance were very well done and funny in their own way - and also way more emotional than I expected. I actually clapped, when he panickally asked Aladdin to wish something in the end and cautiously rehearsed to say no for once. I had no idea Smith could sing so well, so that was a pleasant surprise. I hate when people are trying to copy their predecessors, so I was really glad that Will made Genie his own while still honoring the original work. So please… don’t let this movie slip away just because of your prejudices.
Yes, Jafar was not as “rough”, chilling or threatening as in the original, but he was still convincing, especially when his “true colors” came out. He wasn’t meant to be all evil right from the start - or at least show it to the audience. I actually prefer villains, who show their true essence little by little and deceive the heroes. I liked the fact that his agenda was more political and that we get to know more about where he actually comes from and how he was treated. (Plus, let me tell you, some theorists who made guesses about his roots will be very pleased.) Jago was made really plausibly, and he preserved his sassy and funny side. I am a bit sad that we did not see “Prince Ali reprise”, but I also understand why they left it out. “The second rate”-reference from the sequel was a nice detail as well.
I really liked the new characters, especially Dalia, they were really entertaining and refreshing add to the story. Abu and the Carpet stole my heart from the very first moment, and I actually gasped in pain, when the Carpet was ripped. I had no problem with the white character, either. Still, Rajah was my ultimate favorite in the end. ;)
I also adored the fact that Sultan was more than a little comical relief (although, the moment with him, Genie, Aladdin and Jasmine was HILARIOUS). A part of me wanted to see Jasmine as a slave and tricking Jafar by her “affection” to him, but Jafar actually trying to kill Sultan and her friend to get Jasmine to agree to marry him is way more efficent and horrifying. Even though I knew what was going to happen, “That was close”-moment with their wedding was also very thrilling.
Naomi was, IS, Jasmine. I liked the changes in her story so so much. She was able to keep Jasmine’s wittiness and independence, but also add some sadness, gentleness and wisdom in the character. Some people might disagree, but her wanting to know more about her people, acknowledging her blindness and prejudices and becoming a Sultan and was everything I hoped and more. I also loved how she at first was guarded and distant towards Prince Ali, became suspicious about Aladdin’s true identity, and wanted to know more about him. Their balcony scenes and discussion after “A Whole New World” are way better in this movie, in my opinion. When it comes to the original, I was always really disappointed that Jasmine didn’t get her own song. Now we have it - and It's perfect as far as I’m concerned. Naomi’s voice and the way that the scenes were created, were mesmerizing. I seriously got some chills and tears in my eyes, and bumped my fist through the air. Yes, it is quite different from the rest of the movie, but that only makes it unique for me. When the soundtrack was published, I listened this song for hours - and cried everytime. It’s such an empowering song and I think many people in different circumstances will relate to it. Some people refer to it as “second Let it go”, but in my eyes it's actually really different and better. One of my favorite things about this movie is the fact that they deepened the relationship between Jasmine and Aladdin. This is actually one of the most romantic remakes as well.
In addition to “Speechless”, “Arabian Nights” is my favorite from this movie. The whole first scene and how we fly from the sea through the whole Agrabah is really fascinating. I also loved that they chose to make it longer, since it was my favorite from the original and I remember thinking: “Oh, is it over already? So pity.” But all the other songs were great as well. I was a bit worried about “A Whole New World”, since it is such an iconic masterpiece, but it was carried out beautifully. The special effects and Will’s Performance in “Prince Ali” and “A Friend Like Me” were breathtaking. I didn’t think “Prince Ali” as too slow or plain, and, in my opinion, more Genie-transformations would have made the scene confusing and hard to follow. Maybe that’s just me. It was really hard for me not to start dancing and singing from the top of my lungs.
Aladdin was perfectly casted as well. Mena Massoud isn’t the most impressive singer, but he figured out the essence of Aladdin and sounded very close to the original, while adding his own layer to it. I especially adored the second reprise of “One Jump Ahead”, but other his songs were also good. I like that in the “One Jump Ahead” he actually sounds like he is running away from someone. The good change was also that you could actually see how he changed his mind about freeing the Genie little by little and how he didn’t capture the essence of Prince Ali right away, but was really awkward and nervous at first (it was visible in, for example, “Prince Ali”, where his confidence grew gradually). Plus, the fact that the Genie emphasized the rules and the importance of “putting your words” right while doing the wishes was clever. All in all: charming, sensible, funny and natural performance by Mena.
As a side fact, the costumes were both close enough to the original ones, but they still had some originality, which I really respect.
The long story short: do yourselves a favor, and go watch this diamond (pun intended). In my opinion, it really is worth of your time. I got the feeling that there might be a chance for the sequel. Hopefully it will happen at some point.

Gimme some Scar
Tumblr media
Love him. Great villain. While the roster of my top five Disney villains when I was a kid consisted of the same five villains as today (just in a slightly different order), Cruella was not, actually, the holder of the number six spot. Actually, for the longest time, Scar held that position pretty undisputedly. As a kid, I loved Scar. Though I didn’t own The Lion King on VHS, I did have a recording of it that also had Hocus Pocus on the same tape. So I ended up watching those two movies back to back pretty frequently as a result. However, by the time I got to the internet and really saw how obnoxious people could be, my love for Scar faltered and died out. However, recently, as I’ve moved away from toxic sites and the like, I’ve allowed myself to really appreciate him again. I thought he was great when I was young, but I talked myself out of it because of listening to others. Now, having grown as a critic of media and as a Disney fan and person, I now KNOW Scar is excellent.
Okay, lets get the thing everyone praises him for out of the way first: he killed Mufasa. Most Disney villains have an implied body count, but Scar, while not the very first instance, was the one behind the most meaningful and iconic instance of a Disney villain committing an on-screen murder, due to the fact that he killed a prominent and well established character. Now, I’m certainly not one who thinks it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread that he killed a character, and, in fact, as a kid, that actually was a point against Scar for me because it upset my mother. However, I do think it is something very notable about him that he did manage to be so successful and explicit in his evil for a Disney villain. He definitely paved the way for Disney villains to take that next step into murder. To not mention the impact of that would be a disservice.
However, after Clayton, Rourke, Scroop, Facilier, and Callaghan all also killed main named characters on screen, the effect of “Oh my gosh, Scar killed Mufasa,” has kind of dulled. And, really and truly, if the novelty of Scar killing Mufasa was all the draw to him as a villain, as many internet commenters would lead you to believe, then he really wasn’t a great villain to begin with. Because novelty is only worth something as long as it IS novelty. It had the novelty, but the novelty is now gone. Fortunately for Scar, he has a multitude of other perks that keep him at the top of the heap.
For one thing, he has that classic Disney villain attitude. The charisma, the charm, the upbeat attitude, the snark, and the shear unadulterated cruelty, Scar’s got the complete package that made the likes of Ursula and Jafar such memorable villains. He’s the type of villain who enters the scene and just draws all of the attention to himself. Jeremy Irons does a fantastic job going over the top and just loving every minute of being Scar. He’s having an absolute blast getting into the role, so we as the audience have a blast watching him. He’s just straight up fun. You get sucked in my the performance delivered, and it’s hard not to leave the movie quoting Scar with dramatic inflection.
His villain song, “Be Prepared” is awesome. I mean, Hell, it’s a song created by Elton John and Tim Rice sung by Jeremy Irons. What about that combination could go wrong? The green and sick looking beginning color scheme that evolves into red and hellish illustrates the building intensity on the song in a beautiful way, and the music itself builds marvelously. It’s just an epic song that really makes Scar shine. The goose-stepping hyena moment gets enough attention in online forums, so I’m not going to laude that because I don’t find that type of lauding to be in good taste. However, the single most iconic performative image associated with fascism being transposed onto Scar and his minions here is a really effective visual shorthand to convey the monstrosity and the threat of tyranny that Scar’s agenda promises.
Motivation wise, he’s not especially complex or unique. He just wants to be king and have power, like many of the other Disney villains. Most villains do manage to at least somewhat succeed in their goals before their defeat in the climax to bring sort of the darkest night before the heroic and triumphant dawn of the climax. However, where Scar manages to stand out is that after killing Mufasa, he becomes the king and remains the king from Simba’s childhood into Simba’s adulthood. He manages to enjoy years and years of victory. And, through throwing off the balance of the Circle of Life, he ends up bringing ruin and destruction upon the kingdom. We don’t just get a glimpse of why he’s an awful villain. We see outright the type of ruin that his selfishness and wickedness brings.
However, if I’m being honest, the Scar that we get in the movie is, in my opinion, inferior to the Scar we’re treated to in the Broadway musical. Though filling much the same role as the film version, the Broadway version of Scar adds in “The Madness of King Scar” scene, which, with its singular addition, takes Scar to the next level as a villain. In the film, we see Scar’s madness that ensues in the form of him basically becoming a man-child, echoing Simba in the “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” sequence. He devolves as Simba grows. Good for a foil dynamic in a film, but not especially compelling or interesting in its own right. The Broadway show, however, takes the time to really dive into Scar’s rapidly devolving sanity and to do it in a way that stays true the foil nature while also enhancing Scar as a character and antagonist without making him into just a brat.
In this number, we see that Scar’s volatile emotions and needy hunger for external validation is the centerpiece of his motivation. Though he puts on a façade of being an intellectual schemer in the first half of the movie, after he achieves his goal and starts acting with less intention and more on his base desires, we see an unhealthy and unstable emotional hunger at the root of everything he does. We see his need for emotional validation and how it pains him not to have gotten it in comparison to Mufasa. We see him pleading with the other characters on stage to “Tell me I’m adored!” Instead of just being someone who wants power for the sake of power, we see that, for Scar, being king is about receiving the love and validation he was denied growing up. He’s allowed his perceived slights to warp his brain to the point where he’s made his life revolve around one upping Mufasa and being better. And this unhealthy desire has caused him to devolve into a paranoid mess who constantly needs reaffirming that he’s loved and adored.
He’s just very well written, very entertaining, and very well executed.
Send me a character, and I’ll give you my opinion on them

(AO3 Link)
Alright so maybe this was a bad way to come out but he was ready and they should have known already anyway. Not like Shield to not investigate all his history. Besides they had read his files before or at least Tony had investigated so surely everyone knew already. He wasn’t hiding per say but he wasn’t going to shout it to the world. It was his business and the business of his partner…if he ever had one.
The pride parade was already drawing up more stress than necessary and they weren’t even at the event yet. He takes one last look in the mirror over his image. It’s casual and well it is pride so jeans are a must along with a colorful feather crown and numerous plastic rainbow beads around his neck. He sighs hands feeling sweaty as he heads out of his room to the main lobby where everyone is meeting.
He spots Steve. He should have none the solider would be early or on military time. He greets him as usual in the morning nerves on edge.
“Bruce, are you going to be ok? I know this is a big event being a parade and all,” Steve pauses looking at Bruce’s shirt. “Bruce, what are you wearing?”
“My flag.” He states calmly glad his voice didn’t squeak due to nerves.
“I thought the bi flag was different colors,” he asks checking his shirt again. This whole flag thing was confusing but it is a cool concept. He was currently wearing the bi color flag.
“No these are the right colors for me,” he smiles at Steve. He just wants this to be over with already and this would be better if everyone was here so he could rip the band-aid off already.
“Bruce I think you have the wrong colors people might get upset,” Steve states. “I’m new to the flags but-”
“Steve why would they get upset they’re my family. Only people I offend would be my blood family…well except for a few members in my family Like Jen and Aunt Susan were on my side,” he smiles.
“Wait so?”
“Steve it’s not that hard to see I’m still the same Bruce it’s just now you know I’m trans. It’s not a big deal.”
“Hey, there’s Bruce…huh nice flag bud.” Tony grins putting an arm around him as he wears his own flag shirt.
“Yeah man…and where’s the cake?” Asks Clint staring at Bruce’s shirt.
“Cake?” Bruce raises an eyebrow confused.
“Yeah, the coming out cake? There’s suppose to be cake isn’t there.” Clint grins earning a smile from Bruce.
“Guys let’s go out and support before we miss it.” Says Natasha walking right past the group of men. She gives Bruce a once over with his shirt and shrugs.
Well, fuck that was easy this parade should be a piece of cake…pun intended.
Well, the parade was easy and it was fun interacting with so many from the community. It’s good…it feels good having something to share with their own community when for a long time they were regarded as less than human. They’re still not there yet but as corny as it sounds it does get better.
Thor appears before Bruce with a pack of women behind him. He smiles at him excited. “It seems I have become a lesbian icon over this internet. They’re like the Valkyries in their passion and fighting. I may have helped a bit but they are just like the Valkeries! I do not know what a lesbian icon is but I have been asked to race,” he laughs leading the women behind who scream lesbians. Thor, of course, says what they ask him too “here we go Lesbians?”
Bruce snorts watching the scene not able to hold his laughter in when he catches a familiar face.
“Oh my gosh, it’s you,” squeals a woman wearing a pink crown and holding a fairy wand. She rushes over towards Bruce and hugs him. “thank you for last time. I knew we had to be in the same family,” she giggles, “My name is Lydia.”
“Lydia nice to meet you again I’m Bruce. It wasn’t anything special. I was just doing the right thing,” he says trying to recover from the surprise hug.
“Well I’m thankful either way otherwise I never would have found my wifey,” she smiles waving over a girl with familiar blue hair. “Bruce, this is my girlfriend Blue,” she introduces the woman who had released the blue haze. Blue for a name ha makes sense.
“Oh we’ve met before,” he smiles as Blue recognizes him and hides behind her tall girlfriend.
“Really where,” she asks looking down at her nervous girlfriend. “Blue don’t be shy this is the guy I told you about. He saved me from those…those people at the convivence store.”
Oh…oh that makes sense. That was the same area now that he thinks about it. The Same area where Lydia was harassed. Blue wasn’t getting a snack from the convivence store she was either getting revenge most likely or telling someone off for not helping out. Well, the convenience store clerks probable deserved it then, ignoring her girlfriend when she was in trouble get the blue haze simple.
Bruce realizes he had been staring off into space by the facial expression Lydia is giving him. “Uh, earlier during the parade.” He lies looking at Blue. “I’m glad for you both though but I gotta head back to my group.”
“Oh yeah no problem bye Bruce.” Smiles Lydia waving him off before walking with her girlfriend Blue cheering. Blue looks over at Bruce and gives a nod of her head
“Uh was that,” starts Clint.
“Yep.”
“And there’s not going to be a problem,” he asks watching the two women disappear.
“Not with her girlfriend here.” He grins.

A look into why the cult classic television show, once raved as being as feminist as they come, is problematic.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is problematic.
Before you freak out, let me soften the blow by saying – pretty much all of your faves are a little problematic. Every TV show, every book, every character has an area where it falls down a little, and that’s okay, it happens. No one is creating art to be perfect and rightly so because nothing is going to be, not now or twenty years from now when we ultimately have entirely different social issues. We as a people evolve and learn and as such when we look back on our favorite childhood characters – and this article is on my all-time favorite childhood character – we realize there are issues they went against, like how racist The Pest was, and how transphobic The X Files, and how ultimately Buffy the Vampire Slayer contributed to bi-erasure and had plenty of instances of sexism, racism, and misogyny not to mention the entire problem that is Xander Harris. Ouch.
Now I will be the first to tell you that rewatching your fave and finding out it’s problematic hurts, but here’s why it’s a good thing: you learn from it, and can prove you’ve grown. When I was watching Buffy slay vampires and cry over a one night stand – Patrick, right? – I, too, believed her to be the epitome of feminism. When she said she was like cookies I knew I didn’t need a man and I’d be just fine on my own… until fifteen minutes later, when she’s entirely in love with Spike again and gosh, why can’t I just find a man so in love with me he’ll try to sexually assault me to show he cares – oh, wait, because I know better. Because I’ve grown.
Bi-erasure was a huge problem for me personally, shown through the love triangle that existed for about three episodes with Oz, Willow, and Tara. Willow was head over heels in love with Oz for two full seasons of Buffy, until she meets Tara and is suddenly gay. Now, let me clarify, I was all for Willow being homosexual, except she had just had a long conversation about why she still very much loved Oz and how he was her always and now she was gay and totally against the idea of dating guys for the rest of the series. Be careful, I have a little whiplash too.
It is definitely sad when media erases areas of grey sexuality, but this one in particular broke my heart. As a nonheteronormative woman who has been romantically and sexually involved with people of varying genders, why the sudden jump? Willow had fantasized about men for years and had been with a man for what was presumably two years before she jumped out of the closet to my confusion. There were no hints at closeted feelings, no long looks at Buffy though I sure wanted there to be, and the storyline smacked me in the face. Why was gay and straight the only options? And why ignore the opportunity it could have been to explore that area of grey sexuality and have Willow develop naturally into a gay woman? Because it’s easier to make it black and white: gay, straight, nothing in between, and that’s been a problem long before Willow Rosenberg first shined on the screen in 1997.
Next up is the casual sexism of BTVS. Has anyone looked back on the Buffy series and really thought about the way they viewed sexually liberated females? I mean, honestly, the moment Buffy loses her virginity to Angel the man loses his soul, and it’s thought to be her fault. Actually, when Angel then goes and kills Jenny, there are many times where Buffy is blamed for it, because she was the one who had sex with him. She also blames herself for sleeping with him, as if it’s her fault she broke the curse by allowing herself sex. Beyond that, the women in the Buffy series consistently seem to be at blame for their boyfriends’ infidelity, as if it is somehow their shame that their men couldn’t ‘help themselves’ but to cheat. Without even bringing up Xander’s consistent terrible behavior towards women, these storylines needed to change, and Buffy is problematic for playing into them as hard as it did for seven seasons.
Racism, too, is a pretty big issue in BTVS and here’s why: it took six seasons for a person of color to live beyond a few episodes, and yet many of the villains or those who died very quickly, such as Kendra, Mister Trick, Forrest, Nikki, and Mister Sweet. The only person of color who earned a real story line was that of Robin, Nikki’s son, and most of that played off of the death of his mother, a person of color who was shown only for her death scene, pretty much. Now, sure, you can blame this on the times but this was the late 1990s and early 2000s, it’s not asking too much to see more than one good POC character who lives. Then again, labeling Robin as good is a bit iffy as well, given that he attempted to murder someone defenseless, but I digress.
On the topic of misogyny I fear I should take a break, crack my knuckles, rotate my shoulders, because honestly on this I could probably write a book. Joss Whedon’s feminism has become incredibly problematic over the years and was very apparent in Buffy, though it was praised at the time as a feminism show and Joss was praised for being a feminist. He was constantly praised for writing strong female characters but the point stands – is a female character strong and feminist for beating up bad guys when they constantly depend on guys, usually who are bad guys? The answer is, ultimately, no.
Truth is, Buffy was created by men, watched by men, relied on men throughout the entire series. She falls apart when Angel leaves, understandably, but then again with the emotionally abusive Riley and the playboy Parker, and that doesn’t even begin to talk about her relationships with these men or bring up Spike, who literally tried to sexually assault her and almost succeeded. And this only focusing on Buffy Summers! If you bring Joss Whedon’s slut shaming and misogyny towards Cordelia and Faith into the picture, this entire article would get much longer than it probably needs to be so let me summarize – sexual and confident on BTVS leads to demise. Always. Over and over throughout Buffy’s seven seasons we are seen that a woman having sex is dangerous and somehow tarnishes them, with the exception of only one, the BuffyBot. Apparently, if you’re a robot being used for the enjoyment of men, then it’s okay… Not the best light for feminism, but a very bright one on misogyny.
Point is, Buffy Summers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a whole is incredibly problematic, but that, in a very strange way, is a good thing, because if you can recognize that you have grown from the time when the Buffy series was recognized as a feminist icon and perhaps you, perhaps we, can be better.
