If you’d asked Lizzie what release she was most excited about that week, she’d be polite enough to pretend that Darren’s EP and the new Star Wars were neck and neck for her affection, even if Star Wars was clearly lightyears ahead of pretty much everything else that could be on her mind right now. It wasn’t that she wasn’t excited about Darren’s music, but she did have almost 29 years of built-up affection for Star Wars to lean on, so the hype was real, and really difficult to control. That didn’t mean she was any less pumped about Homework though, her pre-order already placed and ready to download the second it was released, and since Darren had been sweet enough to come surprise her in Atlanta and enjoy some of that southern snow, she thought that a celebration was in order. 

She’d kept the details of their itinerary for the evening vague, knowing that a good dinner out was an obvious first stop for them, so she’d found a good spot for korean southern comfort food fusion and let him eat to his hearts content, and then pulled him into an Uber for their next mystery destination. Settling into the backseat next to him, she angled her body toward his and thought of the first time they’d sat this close, that night on the hill overlooking Los Angeles, how hard she’d fought not to let herself feel anything, think anything about him, how good she felt now to admit that she wanted him, even if she still held herself back in many ways. The truth will set you free, that’s what she’d always been told, and right now she was enjoying that the truth let her admit that she enjoyed his company, enjoyed being close to him, and enjoyed the look on his face when he was having a fantastic time. Could I ask how you went about training more "complex" stuff for your deaf aussie?

full disclosure i haven’t trained her in terribly complex ways? because i don’t use her competitively and our life is p structured (fenced yard, consistent routine, she comes to work with me), so her needs are basic. but there are a couple cool things that delight ppl: she knows speak, and she can jump hurdles (like for agility)

on speak, i had the advantage of Goose being a very vocal dog anyway. i waited for her to bark while paying attention to me and immediately gave a thumbsup+treat. Goose is also extremely food motivated so the “oh shit you’re teaching me something” switch flipped instantly. after several repetitions of rewarding for a bark, i started to throw an associated command in (my hand opening and closing very quick). Goose is such a smartie pants she picked it up within one training session.

for hurdles, we set up a hurdle in the yard at very low height. again, food motivated, so i slowly guided her over the hurdle and only rewarded her if she went OVER, not around. once she was comfy with stepping over, i added a little height and a new tool: a super fun lure for her to chase (like a cat wand). i used the lure to guide her over the hurdle, again only rewarding for a proper jump. pretty soon we’d start further away, get to a run, and she’d leap right over that thing.

typing this out i’m realizing for the hundredth time that training a deaf dog is really no different from a hearing dog, you just eliminate vocal commands. so the biggest consideration is just that you can’t get their attention from afar like you can with hearing dogs.

for the record, the HARDEST thing to train, both Goose and Joanie fsr, was lay down. idk why. they both just wanted to stand no matter what, it took foreeeeever for them to grasp it!
