Harry Bertoia was a mid-20th-century sculptor and furniture designer known for his innovative approach that seamlessly blended art and functionality. Born in Italy in 1915 and later moving to the United States, Bertoia studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he developed a unique perspective on design. His most famous works, including the Diamond Chair and the Bertoia Side Chair, showcase his ability to transform functional furniture into sculptural art pieces. These designs, made with metal wire, reflect Bertoia’s commitment to combining aesthetic beauty with practical use.
Central to Bertoia's philosophy was the belief that furniture should not merely serve a functional purpose but should also be viewed as works of art. His iconic Diamond Chair exemplifies this approach, combining sculptural beauty with comfort. Bertoia adhered to the principle of "form follows function" but elevated it to an artistic expression, creatively using materials like metal wire to design lightweight yet strong furniture. Nature also served as a significant source of inspiration for Bertoia. He meticulously studied natural forms and structures, incorporating their organic curves and shapes into his designs. This connection to nature is evident in many of his works, which often mimic the fluidity and elegance found in the natural world.
Bertoia's legacy extends beyond his individual works, influencing numerous contemporary designers such as Marc Newson, Thomas Heatherwick, and Karim Rashid. His contributions to modern design are celebrated for their originality and artistic merit, proving that functionality and aesthetic pleasure can coexist harmoniously. His sound sculptures, known as Sonambient, further illustrate his innovative spirit, engaging both the visual and auditory senses of the observer. Through his pioneering designs, Harry Bertoia has left an indelible mark on the world of art and design, demonstrating that everyday objects can transcend their utilitarian origins to become extraordinary works of art.

Bombay Sapphire Distillery by Heatherwick Studio in #Laverstoke #UK 2014. Two curving glass greenhouses form the major new additions to the site. Hot air is channeled into the greenhouses through large pipes clad in strips of metal, picking up heat produced during the distillation process and carrying it out through openings in the red-brick walls of one of the existing buildings. #canitellyou one my favorite spots in the city is @littleislandnyc. There’s an immediate sense of joy that you feel as soon as you walk across to the island. There’s so much to appreciate; from the landscaping by Signe Nielsen, the meandering paths, the sweeping views of downtown Manhattan and the architecture itself designed by Thomas Heatherwick. LITTLE PLANS
There's been much hoo-ha about Little Island, the new public park at Pier 54 in downtown Manhattan. Like that other Hudson River folly further north, The Vessel, it was designed by English artist Thomas Heatherwick. And it was designed for photographs, both to look good in them and to give places to take them. The view of its lovely tulip-topped concrete piers from the promenade along the West Side Highway has already become iconic.
The park’s landscape design, by Signe Nielsen of MNLA, is romantic and, thanks to weeks of rain and damp, lush. But Heatherwick’s master plan leaves Nielsen little space to work with. The plantings are pinched, filling the strange narrow spaces left over from the tortuous walking paths, that fold in upon themselves like intestine, and guide and constrain one’s experience of the place.
I visited on a sunny Saturday morning and followed a crowd grazing elbow-to-elbow counter-clockwise. The paths delivered us up a hill to the top of the main ampitheater, around a bend to the northwest observatory, down and up a hill to the southwest observatory, down and around a hill to a smaller ampitheater, and finally over a hill covering the south entrance to the southeast observatory. The views attained -- to downtown, midtown, and New Jersey -- were nice but not appreciably different from those at street level. There were no revelations along the way, as there are along the Bridle Path at Central Park, where views shift seasonally and hourly, revealing and concealing, inspiring remembrance and reflection.
Little Island, which is about half the size of a city block, is fundamentally cramped. To accommodate its program (in addition to the two ampitheaters there are restrooms and a food court) graciously and also offer meaningful park space, a site four times this size might have been needed. When I visited people sprawled on the lawn to relax, but remained within arm’s reach of the stream of pedestrians. There's no release from the theatrical compression here, no space to be with oneself or with the landscape.
Nineteenth-century architect Daniel Burnham famously declared, “Make no small plans.” Heatherwick would have benefited from smaller plans, crafting a single ampitheater or lawn that could have been integrated deeply with the stunning sculptural piers below. Instead Little Island feels like just too much, a slice of pizza with too many toppings.
