“Listen. I promise this is the last time I bring this up.” Eddie said, placing his open book face-down on the grass to hold it on the page he had stopped at, instead of simply reaching for a pen to use as a bookmark. “But do you think Nate could’ve thought I had something to do with it?” Weird calling him that. Nate. They weren’t friends. He had never called him that to his face. But calling him Nathaniel Shaw to other people felt so formal? Kind of obnoxious to publicize their mutual dislike to other people… Anyway. It was just a wild guess. Maybe Parker could contribute to his investigation. So far, the list of suspects on his notes app, conspicuously titled “people that might think i have smth to do w greer’s disappearance”, tagged with the purple label – for G-related things – and the pink one as well – for Greer related things – only had Anya’s name, with the observation ‘weird interrogation moment’ written next to it.

Although sometimes they seemed like one big, happy unit, the Walshes and the Morrisons were two very distinct families. Not just in the obvious sense of blood, but in the less evident, more discrete form of bond.

There was something genuine about the Walsh household. Something real. A union that seemed to overcome obstacles and earn their priority above all else. That was to say that, to Edward, it seemed like regardless of whatever imperfections Parker’s family might have – like all families do –, at the end of the day, they could always turn to each other.

And if someone came to their Hamptons home for dinner one day, and accidentally stepped into another house (the wrong house) on the same street – quite alike in appearance and architectural style – a common mistake, really, they would find a relatively similar family structure, with monstrously different dynamics.

At the Morrisons’, relationships had always been motivated by one thing and one thing only: interest. There were, of course, exceptions. Rufus Morrison would burn down the world for Greer if that was what his baby girl asked of him, while Cherise would kill a pack of wolves with her hands tied behind her back to protect her precious little Eddie. But aside from rare moments where there were brief glimpses of this bond between parents and children, their interactions were restricted to perfunctory and bureaucratic exchanges.

While at Parker’s home, her brothers gave her no rest over the incident that had taken place before the summer – questioning her incessantly, worrying about her non-stop – all that happened between him and Cara concerning the aftermath of the fire was a dialogue along the lines of, “You okay?” “Yeah. You?” “Mhm.”

“Well, that’s exciting for the both of them. I’ll make sure to nag them for information and then come straight to you if they tell me anything.” Despite all this cold formality that they nested in his home, there was something comforting about the camaraderie the six of them – well, five now – shared. Warm and genuine, almost like familial love, but without the compulsory feel.

A laugh escaped him when she questioned if his parents had given him as much hell as hers. Come on now, it suggested. “Absolutely not. One day, I was there, and the other, I was gone. My dad even forgot I was flying to Paris on the 6th. He called me on Monday asking if I wasn’t going to show up for work.” It wasn’t at all funny, but Edward made sure to recount it like it was the most comical little anecdote. “But it was good. Got to relax a little after spending nearly two months under Rufus’ wing.” He didn’t tell her about the big fight with his friends halfway through his trip, about the promise he’d made, about how he had scarcely talked to them since. Edward was still trying to process that himself before he could share it with anyone.

parker followed eddie's lead with natural ease, nodding as though to reassure him that her memory was correct. which, of course it was. she'd only loved the assumption so much as a kid, she'd convinced entire her seventh grade class that she, in fact, had a legitimate sister—as well as two more siblings—living in manhattan. with only brothers, it was a lovely thought, after all.

which, speaking of, "yeah. they—" parker hesitated, then exhaled a deep breath and shrugged. "they were more worried about me than anything for a minute. i had to, like, drag information about their lives out of them to change the subject." her eyes rolled, as though it was all typical sibling stuff. not like she'd made it a point to fly around the world and avoid home for several weeks. but eddie would get it—he'd understand, considering he'd been there at the end of the last semester. he, too, had fled the country, after all. "andy and larsen made a couple comments about getting married out there, so i started taking hush-hush bets on when they'll get engaged. i'm banking on the holidays this year." parker smiled, seeing their faces more clearly in her mind than the gala all around her. at least something good was happening for someone. "—and finn's talking to some guy from the city, but he wouldn't tell me much about it. anyway, they send their love—and jealousy over your trip. which," her shoulder met his in a gentle nudge, "you need to tell me all about. did you catch as much shit for not being home as i did?"

Random Wimsey/Vane thought

I'm honestly kind of surprised that more isn't made in the Wimsey/Vane books of the fact that Harriet, once married to Peter, gets his title. By which I of course don't mean Lady Wimsey, and certainly not Lady Harriet Wimsey- she's Lady Peter Wimsey.

I know that back then Mrs Husband'sfirstname Marriedname was a much more common construct, but there you have the option of Mrs Marriedname, or even Mrs Firstname Marriedname, which can mitigate things a lot. Harriet doesn't have that option. She's either Harriet Vane or Lady Peter Wimsey, entirely her work identity or entirely her married identity- and with her married identity completely subsumed by her husband's name.

That could have been interesting as a plot point in one of the getting-together books, given all the discussions about identity and power dynamics in marriage, but the fact that it's brought up a couple of times in passing in Busman's Honeymoon (Miss Twitterton's knowledge of Harriet's new title is a sign of her gentility, Harriet introduces herself by it to Mrs Ruddle, etc) but no implications of the title ever are- despite the fact that they have lots of discussions about what being married means to them- is kind of strange to me. At the very least, seeing as Busman's Honeymoon was written as a play first and written mostly before Gaudy Night, put the discussion in Gaudy Night! It just feels like a thread that is dropped, or in some ways never even picked up, for no real reason.

We DO see Harriet writing "Harriet Wimsey" on the chimney pot, so we know that she obviously doesn't THINK of herself as Lady Peter- why should she?- but the title is both pretty uncommon and a pretty big imposition on a woman (and one that, say, Parker doesn't have to live under as the husband of Lady Mary) and I honestly am a bit surprised that it doesn't come up at all.

Maybe it does somewhere, like in the Paton Walsh books?

THE WINTER BREAK TRIP

Thanks to THE SOCIAL BUTTERFLY's genoristy and continuing presence at the center of all social circles, all students who were close to THE GOLDEN GIRL (or at least appeared to be and maybe some mistakes) have been invited out to the Hamptons. It's the offseason - so whilst many people are jetting off to ski resorts or warm islands, the beaches are deserted, quiet, and covered in snow.

Perfect to celebrate the end of a year - and most importantly, honor Greer's life, of course.

Since the return to campus, a small memorial had been building up for Penny along one of the flowerbeds in the quad, only continuing to grow in the days since the memorial the school had put on. Flowers, notes, photos - students dropped their offerings where the shrine had been put together. The students who were all at the chalet where Penelope had been found seemed to have mixed reactions - hurrying by with their eyes averted, stopping every time they crossed through the quad, acting like it simply didn't exist. If they didn't go out of their way to avoid it. 

And then, a few days after the memorial, when the shrine had nearly tripled in size with all of the things people had left, some realized that there could be info there. Some sort of answers about what happened. 

 Or at least G did. 

Whether they left the note there or not, they're the one who texted PARKER WALSH, suggesting she take her time reading through all dedications that had been left. No other way of knowing what secrets people were willing to spill to a dead girl...

Bookstores were a place outside the realm of time and space. A parallel dimension where clocks froze, and the outside world became insignificant. Bookstores were, to him, what Toys R Us used to be for early 2000s children – somewhere to get lost in for hours on end, with no prospect of returning. It was like going into the armoire that took the Pevensie children into Narnia or crossing the bridge to Terabithia with Leslie and Jesse. And, by the time he came to his senses, he would have three or four volumes of different genres, authors, and literary movements under his arms. It was after almost an hour of wandering around and reading countless synopses on dust jackets that his gaze landed on a set of familiar light-blue eyes through the gap in the shelf that allowed him to see the other side. Parker. He took the copy of the Sally Rooney novel he had been studying and walked around the shelf to greet her. “If I had a dime for every time I saw you here, browsing the fantasy section, I’d have like, three dimes, which is not much, but it’s weird that it’s happened three times.” His voice was warm and affectionate, a treatment reserved for Parker, her boyfriend – well, before their falling out, that is –, and another five or six people on campus. In his arms, he balanced a hardcover copy of Conversations with Friends with its hideous original cover and the stupid Hulu-Orignal-Series sticker, Les Enfants Terribles – which had, allegedly, inspired The Dreamers –, and some book about a woman who got married seven times that he had heard about on Tiktok – which he would never admit to using.

Nearly two decades of friendship taught him that Parker conveyed as much information without saying anything as she did with the aid words. Beneath her account of the events surrounding the night she picked Jesse up from Hex, there is an emotional heaviness that he picks up in her voice and gestures. The way she sighs and looks away, and how she pours the drink into her cup… His own eyebrows crease tensely as she continues to speak, his preoccupation coming through against his efforts to keep a straight face. Strangely, there is also a sort of comforting sensation in the back of his mind as she talks… Not because of what she is saying, but because she is saying it. Because she trusts him. The last strand of doubt about the imaginary strain in their friendship vanishing as she speaks.

��Yeah, I know.” He admires her incapability to be negligent. Parker is this is sort of fantastical creature to him – the apotheosis of all good, beautiful things. Kind and generous like a fairy-tale character. And, to Edward, that places her on a pedestal. She would never turn her back on a sibling. Or a boyfriend. A girlfriend. A best friend… But knowing her, he also knows how demanding that is. And that was something he could relate to – although not for the same reasons. Because, at the end of the day, when you prioritize someone else’s needs or desires, you end up neglecting your own. “But all that responsibility on your shoulders… That can’t be good for you, P.” He gives her a compassionate look, wide eyes filled with the most genuine empathy. “You should think a bit more about yourself…” He tries to say the words in a tone that doesn’t sound intrusive. “I mean, you’re overworking yourself, and you’ve got way too much stuff to think about…” He wonders if he’s sounding authoritative. After all, she didn’t ask for advice. “I don’t mean to be dictating rules here…” He makes a large gesture with his hands when he says the word dictating as if to dismiss the idea. “But I’m worried about you.” Maybe he is stepping outside his bounds here, but he truly is preoccupied. Especially considering they haven’t talked in a while…

cheater. parker's eyes widened, taken aback in a totally unserious manner. genuine surprise filled the expression before being swapped for a dose of critical thinking. her eyes squinted as she attempted to remember the pattern up until then. "no," she protested, "i was just explaining my last turn."

right?

well, it didn't really matter. in any case, parker released a childish huff and allowed eddie to continue. and, just like that, the levity that filled his side of things was yanked out and replaced with weightiness that filled hers. "no, it's fine," she reassured, leaning away from the discomfort and embarrassment and into the relief she felt telling someone. telling eddie. maybe she'd been ridiculous to put a sort of guard up. she could trust him, at the very least with this.

"we talked. he—" a heavier sigh cut the word off. it'd been a lot. "the biggest thing wasn't even the fact that he was totally fucking inebriated, but the dorm change form. and it just..." her free hand rose and fell, "brought everything back up." parker's eyes fell to the counter and stayed there for a few long seconds. then she reached for the nearest bottle, uncapped it, and began pouring it into her cup. one, two, three... "i thought he'd be glad if i left, because... we both said some nasty things after homecoming." the pour stopped and parker put the bottle upright... then look a big swig from her cup. her face twisted at the foul taste. "but he was so upset. and, fuck, i just—" her head shook. "you know me, i just can't not care. i can't kick a puppy when they're down." even if i'm allergic, or get bit, or will end up having to give it up anyway.

The cameras in the rest of the facility were taken out one by one, shot down as (F/N) masked her escape.
