Started a new project where I sketch headshots for a bunch of different species to help study animal physiology and facial shapes / features! Foxes are first, specifically vulpes!

Vulpes Ferrilata

One of the 12 species of true foxes, the Tibetan sand fox is famous for looking really strange, almost like they were photoshopped. Most fox species look quite similar to each other so I’m not sure what went wrong with the square-faced Tibetan fox.

They live in China, particularly the Tibetan Plateau, preferring brush-covered or rocky areas. The weather there can be quite cold, so their coat of grey and orange-russet colors is very thick to protect them.

The foxes eat carrion and small prey such as hares, marmots, and rodents (primarily pikas). During winter the ground is generally frozen over and it is difficult for the foxes to dig into pika burrows, so they follow bears around hoping they can snatch up some of the bear’s leftovers or prey they missed when digging. At night when they’re not hunting (they are diurnal) they rest in their dens. In these dens both parents care for their kits until they are 8-10 months old, after which they leave to find their own partners. Tibetan foxes are quite solitary, but these pairs generally hunt together and share prey.

A little while back, I discovered that I had the almost the exact same facial proportions as a Tibetan Sand Fox

In my younger and more vulnerable years I'm sure this would have made me feel very insecure. But honestly? Sand foxes are rad as hell, I'm just gonna own this shit.
