Started a new project where I sketch headshots for a bunch of different species to help study animal physiology and facial shapes / features! Foxes are first, specifically vulpes!

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

Most foxes spend their lives on the ground, but Blanford's fox is a remarkable exception. First discovered in Palestine in 1983, Vulpes cana spends almost all its time climbing steep cliffs. To navigate this terrain, this small fox (only 38.5 to 80 cm (15.2 to 31.5 in) long) can leap over 3 m (9.8 ft) high!

Vulpes Cana

Very little information is available on these strange looking foxes. They deserve more attention from the world

Blanford’s foxes, also known as the Afghan fox or royal fox, are found in the mountainous regions of the Middle East and Central Asia, particularly in Afghanistan and surrounding countries. They are excellent climbers, using their cat-like claws and bare paw-pads to grip narrow ledges, and they can supposedly jump to ledges nearly 10 feet above them. Their huge tails, which are roughly the same size as their bodies, help them balance on these ledges. It also helps them look very nice.

While most fox species have omnivorous diets of insects, plants, and small animals, the diet of the Blanford’s fox consists almost entirely of insects and fruit. This fruit includes dates, grapes, and various kinds of melons. They forage for this food at night to avoid predators, spending the day in a cave or rocky den.

I rate the Blanford’s fox 13/10 just look at those ears and that tail

I am making a fursona that will be civet + rusty spotted cat + crow + komodo dragon + some kinda canine breed

unfortunately my doggy+ knowledge scope only extends to wild caninae as there is currently too many domestic dog breeds out in this world for my comfort and unlike with cat breeds i never cared enough when i was 14 to memorize all 69420 of them in a sudden autism frenzy i shit myself every time i open the dog breed wikipedia page what are all of you. the hell is a bedlington terrier why do they look like that and can they stop im literally shaking. so im gonna list only the Other Ones is that ok🥺🥺

in the original japanese, the last line is 「（ため息）……別にうらやましくはないが」 “(sigh) … Not that I’m jealous. / I’m not particularly envious.”

Actual species, gray foxes are one of only a handful of canids with retractable claws and rotary shoulders like a cat. The only others i personally know of are.the Blanford's Fox and the Tanuki

FOXHOLE FORCE - Meet the Foxes!

Hi everyone!

I decided to do something fun today, so I'll post the picture of the Foxes' species that inspired each Fox Spirit.

These were the very first images I googled when I started outlining the story.

Because of how the story is written, we only get to see the relationship between Neil and his Fox, but picture these foxes as the ones living inside every Ranger and talking to them through everything.

What's your favorite fox and fact about them? Mostly asking because I found out about the Blanford's Fox and I love them a lot (not as much as the fennec fox, but you should check them out sometime!)

tibetan sand foxes. because just....look at them.

my fave fact about these guys is that they've been known to work with other predators to catch prey (in an apparent mutualistic relationship)! they've been observed working with bears to scare small animals from their burrows for an easier time hunting/catching them. they've also been known to share their kills with their mates, their kits, and even other carnivores!

and thanks for introducing me to the Blanford's Fox! never heard about them before now, but i absolutely love them. they're so cute!!

This Pride Month drawing from 2021 should be a decent enough way to introduce my two main fursonas, Thraten & Hyacinth... (info after the break)

Thraten - northern mockingbird [he/they] I've been using Thraten as a default stand-in for myself since 2010, though they remained a "generic grey bird" (whatever that means) until 2016. I don't really see them much as a character; they're essentially just me as a bird. They inherit all of my ambitions and creative interests, but also all of my insecurities. Identifying with Thraten has been rough the past few years, but I'm hoping some small design tweaks might help them better reflect the person I want to be going forward.

Hyacinth - Blanford's fox [they/them] Hyacinth was realized in 2018 out of a desire for a secondary character with a "soft friend" aesthetic, and was designed by OlympiaXylaige. Their vibe is all spring flowers, loose sweaters, and herbal teas, and everything that makes you cozy. I never intended them to be a fursona, but they've come to represent a personification of love & self-love that's helped me reconnect with long-neglected parts of myself. Hyacinth is a character I truly want to bring to life in as many ways as possible, in hopes of conveying to others the embodiment of kindness that I see in them. ("Sometimes Thraten lets me take over their accounts on April Fool's Day, heehee! 💖🌺")

Snow white ears and tail. The tips bright red (used to be pure white but as he grew older, the color appeared more saturated)

often wears colored contact lenses for fun (usually gray, blue, green. Sometimes pink or lavender)

still wears his engagement ring every day.

PERSONALITY: Vulpe tries to appear like he has his life together. This is working for the most part; nice apartment, stable job. But as soon as the sun goes down, the snow fox crumbles under the weight of heartbreak and guilt. All the connections he's made are very surface level, as he has walls built up so high you cannot even see the top. Unapproachable and distant. But if you are able to poke through, you will see a kind, vulnerable and insecure boy, just trying to heal the scares on his soul.

HISTORY: TW: death

Vulpe was adopted by a wealthy British couple and had lived in London for as long as he could remember. Where he really came from was a mystery. Seoul, South-Korea, that’s all he knew, but who his real parents were… his adoptive parents never told him. They probably didn’t know much either. The boy was always the odd one out – ballet over rugby, adopted – but never lonely. To this day he didn’t know if his parents money had something to do with that.

Things got weird when the boy hit puberty. Growing snow white fox ears whenever he got upset or anxious, sometimes even a tail. Freaking out, Vulpe asked his parents about them, who quickly dismissed him. He was too old for these games. He successfully hid the features after that, for the most part anyway and after a while he decided to dye his hair the same color so the ears wouldn’t stand out. That disappointed his parents.

His best friend at the time, Oliver, was a big mythology geek and had books on different pantheons and myths. One day Vulpe asked about any myths Oliver would know about foxes. The boy then learned about Inari and their children. Anyone else would brush it off as fiction, but they didn’t have fox ears growing from their heads. And the tips became more and more red as the fox boy grew older, making it impossible to blend them with his white hair.

It wasn’t until after college the two friends realized there was more. They fell in love. It happened slowly, naturally, as if it was always meant to be. They moved in together rather quickly and only a couple of months after that Oliver proposed.

Their happiness was short-lived, however, when Oliver had a night class to teach one day, but never came back. And the next call Vulps got, was from the police...

The death of his lover was the final straw. He had nothing to keep him in London anymore. So he packed everything and went to Seoul to find who he really was. His journey eventually led him to Mount Phoenix, where he now spends more money than is coming in from his job as a ballet instructor.
