Ticao Island in Masbate, Philippines, is a hidden gem boasting pristine beaches, vibrant marine life, and a rich cultural heritage. As you step onto its shores, you're greeted by crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand. Explore its underwater wonders through snorkeling or diving, where you'll encounter colorful coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles, and even majestic manta rays. While writing this travelogue, I can feel the butterflies on my stomach remembering all the core memories I built on the paradise island. Now, allow me to tell you the very reason I love beaches now… 

I am beyond blessed and I could not thank the Lord more as my mother was born and raised on the Island, giving me a “VIP” access to visit the place once in a while. I can vividly remember my first-ever visit to the Island— a core memory that will live in my mind rent-free. Imagine a seven-year-old girl in awe of the scenery her mind could not even process. It was my first time to travel places outside the city I was born and raised in. So, here’s how it goes— setting off on our journey to Ticao Island, we start our adventure from the bustling streets of Caloocan City. Laden with anticipation and excitement, we made our way to the Cubao bus terminal, the “gateway” to our island paradise. Navigating through the vibrant chaos of Cubao, we finally reach the bus terminal, where a sea of vehicles awaits to carry travelers to their destinations. Amidst the hustle and bustle, my parents were able to secure our tickets for the long journey ahead — a ride to Pilar, Sorsogon, the launching point for our island escapade. As we boarded the bus, I remember settling into my seat, brimming with a mix of eagerness and patience for the voyage ahead. The engine hums to life, signaling the beginning of our 17-hour odyssey through picturesque landscapes and winding roads. With each passing hour, I find myself drifting in and out of sleep, lulled by the rhythmic motion of the bus and the gentle hum of conversation among fellow passengers. Along the way, we pass through beautiful countryside, quaint villages, and majestic mountains, each scene providing a look into the varied fabric of the Philippine archipelago. Finally, as dawn breaks on the horizon, we arrive at our destination — the Pilar Pier in Sorsogon. Stepping off the bus, I was greeted by the salty tang of the sea air and the sight of fishing boats and ferries bobbing gently in the harbor. There, at the edge of the world, our journey to Ticao Island truly began. With a sense of anticipation building in my chest, I take a moment to savor the thrill of exploration and discovery that lies ahead. For beyond these shores lies a paradise waiting to be explored, where azure waters and pristine beaches beckon with the promise of adventure and wonder. And so, with hearts full of excitement and wonder, we set sail towards the sun-kissed shores of Ticao Island, ready to start on the adventure of a lifetime. 

As the ferry glides across the azure waters, I find myself struck with the sight of Ticao Island's rich foliage and craggy coastline. When I step ashore, I am immediately surrounded by a sensation of calm. Our lodging, Lola’s delightful home in the municipality of Monreal, is the ideal place for us to unwind from the polluted air and busy vibes of the City. For the first day, we decided to just rest and stay at Lola’s home. Oh! I almost forgot Barangay Real has no water line but the Lord is not cruel after all as He blessed the barangay with a flowing cold water spring in which people can have water for free— may it be for taking a bath, drinking water, washing clothes, and many more! For our whole stay there, we always took a bath and did laundry in the water spring or what the locals call “matang tubig”. It was a nice summer because of the water spring. We also climbed Lola's rubber plants from the neighboring peak to her house. It was a completely new experience for me to trek a mountain and find so many different flora and herbs. Hiking my Lola's rubber plants was a wonderfully enriching experience, as it allowed me to immerse myself in nature's wealth while also interacting with family. Trekking across the beautiful mountainside, surrounded by thick greenery and the earthy aroma of plants, must have been a sensory delight. Exploring the many plants and herbs along the journey undoubtedly inspired a sense of surprise and interest, strengthening my connection to the natural world. While the last thing I can remember from the trip was the beach we visited! The salty wind, the sun-kissed white sands, and the rhythmic music of the waves breaking against the shore all work together to provide the ideal setting for relaxation. And oh the joys of beachside activities! Building sandcastles became an art form, with each grain of sand meticulously sculpted into turrets and moats, a testament to our boundless imagination and creativity. The laughter of my cousins and I echoed along the shoreline as we splashed in the glittering seas, our joy contagious as we reveled in the freedom of the open waters. I also remember how we got very sentimental as the day drew to a close, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange. We gathered together for one last embrace before bidding farewell, before going back to reality, to the beachside. Though separated by distance and time, the memories we made on this idyllic shore will forever bind us together, a treasure trove of moments to cherish until we meet again. The sands beneath my feet bore witness to the depths of my heart's embrace of that unforgettable moment, capturing the essence of pure joy and bliss in their golden grains. Even now, the mere thought of sinking my toes into the soft, warm embrace of sand fills me with a sense of longing and nostalgia. 

I miss my Lola and her cooking, and my cousins back there. I hope we can come back soon.

Richness and Beauty; A glimpse of Reality

Riding beyond the waves of the blue crystal waters filled with the abundance of the sea, dotted islets and magnificent rock formations, the scorching sun and the humid air welcome the person as they set foot on the island of Masbate.

Geographically located in the heart of the Philippines, this gun-shaped island is famed for being the Rodeo Capital of the country. But there's way more than meets the eye. It was composed of three Major Island Masbate, Ticao and Burias. Each has unique features and attractions, rich in history and natural wonders.

The majority of the population of Masbate lives on the coastline, which makes it a large fishing province. All 270 Barangays are located on 968 Kilometers of natural coastline. The rolling hills, virgin islands and white sand beaches are a gem to seek.

Looking at the progress it is experiencing these past few years, the thriving tourism industry overcoming its reputation as one of the most dangerous provinces to visit is a good sign for the future. The fishing industry thrives with various sea species; these top commodities are Squid, Threadfin, Shrimp, Mangrove crab, Scallop Shell, Sillago, Grouper, Milkfish, Sardines, Belt Fish and Blue Swimming Crab. This is exported to major cities like Manila and Cebu.

How can one imagine managing such islands filled with beauty and riches? What does it take to fulfill the needs and reach the full potential of sustainability and abundance? Or does it still face a challenge yet to be overcome? Let's start in the coastal municipality of Milagros.

Traveling by land, welcomed by the green pasture areas and arable lands. Milagros is a first-class municipality of the 2nd district of Masbate. Aside from the "carmelado" from cow/carabao's milk, it is also known for the bounty of seafood it produces. Located within the Asid Gulf facing the Visayan seas, no wonder people's main source of income is fishing.

Because of the location, the gulf is vulnerable to frequent Red tide due to a lot of water intrusion to the inflow and outflow passage. There's remaining eroded surface subsoil during heavy rains and flooding, and even during summertime. That's why the problem stems from the highlands. Red tide is highly likely to trigger dinoflagellates and algae to bloom in municipal waters. Due to the nutrients accumulated, feeding the harmful algae to bloom, the shellfish consumed this because they just stayed in one place, unlike fishes, which are transient.

"I am unsure if it stays negative or positive (red tide warning) because it is on and off. We just sent our samples to the region, but there is no result yet." Mr. Zacajustifernan Cabarles , MBFAR stated. There are no available testing areas in the province. That's why they only rely on the test result from the Bicol Region, waiting for days to confirm the results; the lack of facilities also added up to the challenge. "We publish shellfish bulletin on conspicuous spaces on the public market and the Brgy. Captains and officials disseminate this information mitigation to tell the constituents not to consume shellfish." He added.

When asked about the long-term solution to this problem, he answered, "I think there's none because it's not man-made, it's a natural occurrence, and the chemicals don't trigger the algae; there's no long-term solution, just mitigation and public awareness, we are not the only one who has this (red tide) there are other places as well, and they don't have long term solution to the red tide as well."

To further inquire about that matter, Mr. Geralph Andrade of BFAR Masbate supported the statement, "Yes, it is a natural occurrence, and it happens from time to time, mainly because of climate change and the improper management of the water circulation; it's up to the management of the locality to remove the structures that destruct the outflow of water, the garbage and wastes to reduce the occurrence(red tide)."Even if there are red tide occurrences, it does not directly affect the fisherman, for there are options only for consumption.

When it comes to fishing, there have been disappointing experiences our local fishermen are facing in recent years. " Before, we enjoyed a lot of species of fish like tanigue and different types of fish, and also a lot of crabs and all. but now we only catch small fishes; we are enduring this small catch, and that's because of the illegal fisher lurking in our sea." Rogelio Plaza, 64 years old, a fisherman for 42 years. He raises his family on the coast with their Laya (fishing boat with lights)

"Those big steel boats dragging the sea floor they are the ones who are getting all of our fish; they are also using cyanide and then catching it with their fishnets; even the small fishes are floating; that's why we are going far just to catch some fish, these boats they are not from Milagros they came from Estancia and Roxas they are coming with their fish finder and GPS, they are just destroying whatever goes in their path." Roselyn Plaza 58 years old Laya fisherwoman for 13 years. " we are not reporting it because we are the only ones who are going to be in danger, all we hope for is the bounty of our Laya, whatever we will get we are grateful for it, these people already have cases filed on courts, but still they are doing the illegal fishing despite of it, they are getting a lot of income for this. She added. They hope that the government will stop these unlawful operations; together with the climate change that constantly affects the sea and its creatures, this prevailing problem continually adds to the agony of our fisherfolks.

"Sometimes we experience, sometimes abundance, but most of the time, we are short because of many consumers; we persevere through hardship even if there is no catch." Elizarde Beljica, 49 years old, 15 years fisherman. It is evident in his eyes the humility and the simple way of living he was used to. Marites De Jesus, 39 years old Dried Pusit maker, stated, " Just persevere and do not rely on the government help if they will give something, be grateful. If none continue to persist for your family, for the government, I hope you will help us poor by giving us even small assistance to add to our livelihood."

There are a lot of challenges that need to be addressed, and that is only in the Municipality of Milagros. "LGUs think that the job is only for BFAR, but we must work hand in hand. It was really hard for us to manage the whole island; having only three permanent employees, thankfully, we have the diligent staff that help us manage the task the National office mandates to us. We are hoping more local government units will put some policies aiming to protect our municipal water because they have autonomy on that; my message is my call for more people here in BFAR Masbate to help us fulfill our role in protecting and preserving the marine industry here in our province." Geralph Andrade was the Spokesperson of BFAR Masbate.

All in all, Masbate still needs a lot of help and improvement in order to unlock the true potential of its rich waters; with the collaboration of National and Local government units, the future is not bleak, and the fisherfolks will have protection and bounty that they seek.

Province of Masbate

Masbate is a Philippine province in the Bicol area, and it is where I was born. Masbate Island, Ticao Island, and Burias Island are the province's three principal islands. The province is situated between two Philippine islands, to the south of the island of Luzon and to the north of Visayas Island. Although the province is technically part of Bicol, the island is more closely tied to the Visayas due to its biogeographical and linguistic proximity. Masbate's city is split into 30 barangays.

As of the 2020 census, the barangay is split into 14 municipalities and one city, with a total population of 731, 269 people. Masbate City is the largest community on the island, with a population of 104,522 as of 2022. The province is also known as the Philippines' rodeo Masbateno capital. It combines Bicolano and Visayan cultures. The majority of Masbateans speak Masbateno, which includes Bisakol, waray-waray, romblomanon, and tagalong. Bicol, Tagalong, Cebuano, and English are also spoken in the island.

Masbateneos are already regular parishioners and participate in holy activities such as the rosary novenas to the saints and other religious events such as the procession, Misa de Gallo, and Semana Santa. Pamalaye central Bicol presentar; Filipino; Pamamanhikan is a gathering of two families of a couple who are preparing to marry. There are yearly rites like as the Lapay Bantigue dance festival, which brings saint Filomena followers from the Visayan Provinces, Pabasa, and Flores De Mayo.

Masbate, like other provinces in the Philippines, combines animism ideas with Roman Catholicism. Furthermore, Masbate has extensive grazing plains that are ideal for producing small and big ruminants such as goats and cattle. It is distinguished by undulating hills, discontinuous highland ranges, and relatively extensive stretches of lowland. With a height of 697 meters, Mt. Bagasimbahan is the highest point on the island of Masbate Baleno, Aroroy. Buntod Sandbar and Reef Marine Sanctuary is the best tourist destination in Masbate.

Is one of Masbate's biggest tourist attractions, a 250-hectare reef and marine sanctuary off the capital city's coastlines. Because of its symbol, it is also the sanctuary's major attraction. Sandbars and mangroves planted. Catandayan Falls- This is a spectacular waterfall in Masbate, which is one of the island's most popular tourist spots in Tico Island. Pinakro is one of the Masbate gitaan dishes you should try. Many Masbate people grew up eating pinakro or ginataan na saba with coffee as their merienda.

Pinakro can use cassava or saba and can be served hot or cold.  Carmelado- This is the best pasalubong from Masbate This native delicacy is made of pure carabaos milk and a little white sugar. Cut into thin rectangular shapes and wrapped in a white paper, it can be found in the port of Masbate and Flea market. Rodeo Masbateno- is the only show in Asia. It is celebrated annually in April and showcases 10 competitive rodeo events. The competition of cowboy’s crisscrosses around a group of barrels.

I skoro tri decenije prije vladike Danila, prvog od Petrovića na vlasti. Prije instant vremeplova u vijesti objavljenoj u listu ,,The London Gazette“, 17. aprila 1671. godine, koja je prije svega bila čista diplomatija – zera iz istorije žurnalizma. Dan-danas je ,,The London Gazette“ jedan od zvaničnih listova, poput biltena, Vlade Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva. Najstariji je engleski list koji je opstao, najstariji u Velikoj Britaniji koji izlazi u kontinuitetu... I da, jedan od prvih koji je izlazio na svijetu. Poređenja radi: ,,Relation aller Fürnemmen und gedenckwürdigen Historien“, priznat kao najstariji list štampan u istoriji, djelo Johana Korolusa nastalo u Strazburu (što je lekcija koju uče svi studenti žurnalistike i političkih nauka) – objavljivan je nekoliko decenija od 1605. godine. Švedski ,,Ordinari post tijdender“ izlazi od 1645. i ima najduži kontinuitet u istoriji. A ,,The London Gazette“ – od 1665. godine. Dakle, na drugom stupcu jedine strane cijenjenog uratka zvaničnog glasila Britanske imperije ,,The London Gazette“, broja 566. od 17. aprila 1671. godine – je Crna Gora. I otvoren komentar iz diplomatskog kruga, opomena za Britance da su ,,aktuelni događaji u Dalmaciji i zaleđu prostor za potencijalne razmirice Porte i naše zemlje“. General Barbaro podnio je izvještaj venecijanskom Senatu (koji je, naravno, došao i do britanskih diplomata) – da je bosanski paša mrtav; da su odredbe mira, ranije potpisanog sa Turcima, ,,na tankim nogama“. O čemu se radi: Crna Gora je bila, na strani Venecije, učesnica Kandijskog rata, koji se oko ostrva Krit (Kandije) vodio na Mediteranu. Rat je završen 1669. a Crna Gora je, kao jedna od poraženih, dobila novu obavezu plaćanja poreza Turcima, koju nije prihvatila. U izvještaju, general Barbaro podsjeća da su Venecijanci 1648. uspjeli da definitino zauzmu Kotor (Cattaro) sa okolinom - ,,veliku i važnu luku“. Nakon toga, podsjeća da su ,,Turci napustili izvjesno mjesto nazvano Rissano (Risan) i koji leži u podnožju Crne Gore i kojom su Venecijanci vjerovatno vladali, a koji je Republici ostavljen Kandijskim mirom“. Potom general Barbaro iznosi interesantnu vinjetu o Crnoj Gori: o tome da je ,,prošle zime jedan Philippovich (Filipović), istrajavao u borbi na strani bosanskog paše“, konkretno u Risnu i okolini. A da su Crnogorci, ,,koji odbijaju da su podanici Porte, preuzeli punu odgovornost za odbranu grada i luke“. Potom, izvještaj u boju: da je taj Filipović kojeg istorija nije zapamtila (vjerovatno iz čuvene begovske porodice iz Livna), u turskom napadu na Risan učestvovao sa oko 3.000 boraca; da su ih Crnogorci potukli do nogu – a da je na licu mjesta između 200 i 300 Turaka izgubilo život... Potom slijedi važna diplomatska prepiska koju general Barbaro navodi pred Senatom u Veneciji; takođe i ono što konkretno najviše brine britanske diplomate. O tome, da je bosanski paša nakon ovih poraza direktno pisao velikom veziru u Stambol, da se nekako pronađe rješenje za te Crnogorce; da je potom vezir lično ušao u intenzivnu komunikaciju sa vrhom vlasti u Veneciji... I konretno, tu dolazimo i do britanskih interesa: kako se uopšte postaviti između dvije sile sa kojima su im dobri odnosi vrlo bitni, Turske i Venecije, u jednom sukobu koji se očigledno ticao prevlasti u Crnoj Gori. I još malo šireg istorijskog konteksta: u Crnoj Gori na vlasti je tada suštinski bio vladika Rufim II Boljević (u dugom i bitnom periodu od 1662. do 1685. godine). Onaj koji je tih godina bio ključna figura i koji je uspio da izlobira da na području Kuča preovlada pravoslavlje. I koji u nizu sukoba Turske i Venecije u jednom dokumentu, ,,spominje veliku bijedu i nesreću kada se carstvo smjenjuje“... Za naš narod gola egzistencija, za Britansku imperiju diplomatska glavobolja i vrlo vjerovatno prvo pominjanje Crne Gore u žurnalizmu!
