alright so lyctorhood is about a theoretical "merging" of two souls except in practice it ends up being an unequal division of power that ends up causing one soul to destroy the other, right. In order to achieve it, a vow must be sworn. And the lyctors have all but forgotten their house names, choosing to use the names of their cavaliers as their surnames. And of all the original lyctors, all of the m/f pairs had the woman as the cavalier (excluding anastasia, who failed the process). Romantic relationships between necromancer and cavalier are taboo because they are meant to be transactional in nature. Paul exists as a different type of lyctorhood entirely, but still causes the death of their necromancer and cavalier, causing those who knew them before to mourn them even though they still stand in front of them. "Perfect Lyctorhood" is theorized to exist, which preserves both people in their own bodies, but the only example of this STILL ends up deeply toxic and damaging to the cavalier who is eventually denied the right to exist ANYWAYS.
In this essay, I will be discussing how the institution of marriage--

do you ever think about the tragedy of Paul and how they represent that being part of the system of necromancy as established by John’s empire, even in a subversive way, is still harmful and a horror and it may be less brutal and exploitative but it’s a cruelty nonetheless.

don't play video games while listening to bohemian rhapsody bc during the bit that goes "I see a little silhouetto of a man" you WILL time your button presses to the beat and die as a result

haven't been keeping up too much with discussion on arcane s2 bc i dont wanna be spoiled, but I feel like Vi being an enforcer is the natural progression for the story? like I dunno, I don't think it's going to be necessarily framed as a "morally good" choice but more as a way to build on her fight scene with Jayce from s1 and contrast her with Jinx further. I don't think it's going to be as simple as "protagonist becomes cop because cop good" because arcane isn't that black and white

haven’t heard much about sex scene discourse in a while and I can’t say if that’s because I curate my online experience better or if the debate was finally settled with interview with the vampire season 1 episode 1. Because that was ART

Now I’m thinking about how good Last Life was. The mechanics really struck a balance between gameplay and storytelling in such a perfect way.
The boogeyman kept things tense, forced players to create conflict, and kept the game unpredictable. It made alliances feel more dangerous and unsteady. It made SUCH GOOD parallels and plot potential: Scott refusing the call, Fairy Fort betrayal, BEST betrayal, Martyn avenging Mumbo... and really, it brought us the incredible saga of Last Life Joel.
Life sharing was also a great way to establish the strength of alliances. GGG sharing everything, Etho giving Bdubs lives until he had nothing left to give... and meanwhile, Scar stocking them up for bargaining power and bringing about his own downfall. Jimmy stealing a life from the Southlands showing how fractured they were.
Random lives, although unfair from a competitive perspective, created a power imbalance right from the get go. It set up people as targets or dangerous immediately.
And the no teaming with red lives was controversial but ultimately I think it really worked? It made it more of a tragedy/apocalypse feel, not necessarily better but different from Third Life in a fresh way. Martyn’s final stand, the GGG reuniting, the constant fluctuation of the Southlands, BigB slowly watching all his allies turn on him, and especially the tragedy of Etho and Bdubs.
I just. man. Last Life was so incredible. The balance between complex gameplay and the foundation being open-ended enough for such a dynamic improv story. It built off of Third Life perfectly.
