Looking back to this commission piece from 2020... It was a very special commission... A client got in touch with me to ask if I could recreate Hawkers Hit... She went on to explain that her husband's favourite place was Hawkers Hit overlooking the sea at Morwenstow... However he was very ill with cancer and it was unlikely that he would visit Hawkers Hut again... She then asked if I could recreate Hawkers Hut so he could visit it with out travelling... And before was the result in (1/26 scale). For a little bit of history on the Hut: Robert Stephen Hawker was vicar of Morwenstow from 1834 to 1875. He was a poet and ballad writer and wrote Cornwall’s unofficial anthem “The Song of the Western Men”. He would retreat to this hut to write his poetry and gently unwind on an evening. Hawker’s Hut was built around 1844 from driftwood and shipwreck timbers. (1/24 scale) Poppins restaurant Worcester: With a lot of my early pieces I've applied paint last however I've evolved to paint sections separately resulting in a neater finish all round - and it makes me feel more in control too... 😂 - For this top section of the building I had the challenge of creating a concrete effect... So after applying some pase coats of different shades of grey with the airbrush, I then turned to a sponge to stipple more shades on... I've not done this before and so this could have gone horribly wrong however sometimes it pays to be extra brave and dive right in trusting your gut... - After applying some black pastels to weather the concrete up I stood back and felt content... (1/80 scale) Small Bibury Cottage - Completed piece: A comparison with the real cottage at the base of Awkward hill, Bibury. - This cottage formed a collection of cottages that were originally for mill workers in the area I believe. The other cottages sat opposite and were more of a terraced set up. I had seen this cottage so many times on Instagram and I couldn't pin point where it was for ages and then one day recently I found it on Google maps. (1/80 scale) Small Bibury Cottage - Completed piece: It's finally finished and I'm really pleased with the results. It depicts the tiny cottage that sits in the village of Bibury at the bottom of awkward hill. I made this piece because I simply felt I wanted to make a tiny house in a tiny scale to fit in a jar... (1/34 scale) Traditional British Corner shop - A simple detail for the flat above the corner shop.... I thought I would put a clothes dryer in the window.... I used plasticard rod to get the shapes I needed by using a template to ensure they were all the same... I airbrushed the clothes dryer with Vallejo Silver 👍 the washing is paper folded over and glued in place... (1/24 scale) Poppins restaurant Worcester: Starting to take some pretty good shape! I've actually built the left hand doorway now and so that's ready for the primer, so I've turned across to the right hand door way to build that up. I've used Google maps to focus in on this door and it's helped to get some important details in... Rose Cottage comission x2 (1/76 scale) the completed pieces! An absolute pleasure to do and a pair I will remember for a long time to come. (1/24 scale) Poppins restaurant Worcester: Currently living in my spray booth and I've connected myself up to the airbrush... This all looks very neat and tidy but I was doing some thinking last night about process and what you don't see on Instagram, when we make an error! - I realised that when I make an error on one of my art pieces I don't panic or give up but instead I learn from the mistake. I take into account the possibility of starting over and this is something I've learnt to do through literally failing and failing hard at times but in the end I always learn for the next time. I sometimes get asked what tools I use and so I thought I would do a show and tell to cover it all... These are my name's for things so don't judge to much 🤣 Here's a top 1 - 12 on what I use 😁 1 - Stanley knife - mainly used for cutting Plasticard but I turn to it for nearly everything, it's a priority! 2. Syringe full of plastic cement - this is a recent addition that I graduated to after realising there was a better way to apply it than ruining brushes... I use this solely to glue plastic to plastic. 3. Tweezers - with different ends... I have come to use these for holding everything and also because my fingers aren't as neat when covered in different cements 😂 4. Cutters or snips - again, a very recent addition in the evoloution of my tool kit and an absolute must for me. Simply because I can cut awkward things off neatly with out causing damage elsewhere... 5. Miniature Hand drill - My absolute G! Can you believe I drilled all the holes in the Thunderbird 2 hanger I made some years ago with a screwdriver... Why? 🤔 6. Steele rulers - I mean, I'm not going to draw a straight line by eye... 🤦🏻‍♂️ 7. Set square - this is used from time to time but makes the top 12 because it stops doubt and ensure neatness when it's required 👌 8. Gorilla Glue (the gel type) - does what I want it to do and I can control it - except when it's on me. 9. White paint pens - Yes, these are unexpectedly useful and allow me to write in white... Fantastic! 😁 10. Sharpies - no explanation needed 11. Pliers - Big tweezers as like to call them as I hold things with them a lot! 12. A3 cutting mat - very important as originally I used to make everything on the floor... Renault 5 GT rally diorama - commission - (1/43) COMPLETED COMMISSION: This one is all set for France now! It was a piece that I was commissioned to make in order to capture a particular Renault 5 GT that took part in one of the French rally's some years ago. The driver was the father of the man who commissioned the piece and so this has been a beautiful thing to create. The jump was an extra challenge that I hadn't tried to do with a back scene before and so capturing depth and perspective in s back scene (especially when I'm no painter) is a challenge. The 3D row of trees was a random piece of mental engineering that happened when I was near a kettle... (1/34 scale) Traditional British Corner shop - The start of the interior, I've gone for a wooden counter and this was achieved so far by using white plasticard to make the room and then I sprayed it with white primer before painting the wooden areas black and then some mahogany brown. Swipe to see my tin plate signs I've added to the shop front. I applied some gloss to these to give at least a little shine to them. I need to weather these up a little too to add to the overall effect.
