journeys:

inteleon: chose this as the starter he gets because i like the idea of there being an arc of him taking this very timid pokemon that wants to be strong but feels too weak to make a difference and ash is the one that helps it gain confidence. was also gonna say that it could look up to leon's inteleon but i'm assuming that leon would only have rillaboom like it is in the games rather than all three starters

flapple: i originally chose this to be the sweeper that ash tends to prefer before realizing oh wait flapple's speed is actually kinda mediocre. still like it as a choice for him though

falinks: stealing emery's idea here because i'm biased and falinks is my favourite gen 8 pokemon. emery mentioned dracovish being the "oddball" choice for ash but i think falinks fits that better since dracovish is (was?) very popular in competitive scenes. idk man i just like falinks

alcremie: fuck mr mime ash deserved to have an actual fairy type. again stealing emery's idea of it being the same one from the cake episode because that's the episode that made me start to really like alcremie

perrserker: honestly so disappointed that matori's alolan meowth never showed up again after sun and moon so here's my continuation of that with ash getting a galarian meowth. i think it has comedic potential with it loving team rocket's meowth (contrast to matori's meowth being a cunt) but tr's meowth fucking hates it. also perrserker is just a good pokemon and i think it suits him

honourable mentions:

toxtricity: either form could work. i liked the idea of ash getting a toxel egg and raising it but i forgot that there's this unspoken rule that ash can't have any other electric type besides pikachu so i scrapped it

stonjourner: another choice for the "weird" team member. don't really have much reasoning behind this one other than i think it would be kinda cute in a strange way?

mr rime: instead of them retconning delia's mr mime, ash instead gets a galarian mr mime and evolves it. if leon still has his mr rime then there could be a rivalry there maybe?

horizons:

quaquaval: typically i consider fuecoco to be the most ash-like starter, but i really love the idea of arven being a potential companion and i think he should get fuecoco because of it being food-themed. i could honestly see ash getting both too but i prefer this. i don't think he would get sprigatito though, though i think meowscarada suits him too

armarouge: taking horizons and paldean winds into account, i think scarlet is considered to be the canon version that the anime would follow. also if we use amethio as a stand-in for the rival (or hell he could still be there) then i think ash getting armarouge would contrast nicely with his ceruledge

houndstone: alright hear me out: ash gets a houndstone, female companion gets a dachsbun (or vice versa really), arven has his mabosstiff. ahh ahhh i'm roatating it in my midn it's beautfiul *puppy dog town* *puppy dog village* ***cuppy dog city*** i wanna i wanna go ahhh

Really love the characters and such! Really do not like the dex. One of my least favorite dexes since like... Gen 5. A lot of the mons look like they asked someone to who never seen a Pokemon design one on how they think a Pokemon would look like. A lot don't evolve. There are some reallllly ugly ones.

Scovillain and the Gimmighoul line might be some of my least favorite Pokemon... ever? Idk. Scovillain is ugly and looks like it should evolve again but never does. Overall I like more than I dislike, but... I don't really have strong opinions on a lot of them. They're just oh i guess this is exists and I dont hate it so I must like it. Idk. Flop dex for me. It felt like they focused more on quantity than quality because this game is open world. That's just my opinion and this is very subjective.

chris' legitimate pokemon scarlet review broken down into categories for your viewing experience (spoilers duh)

CHARACTERS: love the guys in this game. all of team star are so delightful arven is great and nemona is a new fav rival. i wasn't expecting to like clavell as much as i did but he was super fun. gym leaders for what they are (they play very minor roles but thats just how pokemon is aside from bw1 where they show up at the team plasma castle) are super good i especially liked ryme she's awesome. i felt the character writing was a lot better than last gen and they balanced the 3 rivals a lot better tho this could partly just be because of the three split stories focusing on one each.

POKEMON DESIGNS: mixed bag. loved a lot of them like tinkaton the ancient paradox pokemon and tatsugiri. meowscarada quickly became one of my fav starters i love its design and personality. but some of them didn't really do it for me. especially the bugs

HUMAN DESIGNS: really nice. i'm glad pokemon is continuing to diversify the body types of its female cast. i love the women + girls in this game. mela, eri, geeta, sada, rika, katy (I LOVE HER!!!!) and ryme were especially standout designs for me. the guys have cool looks too. i like brassius' edgier take on a grass gym leader and atticus autism warrior!!!!!

STORY: really good. i'm not kidding like god damn. i loved it in this game. it's easily in the big leagues with sun/moon, the gen 5 arc and pla for me (though i just like pla because it's rehashed pmd lol). the starfall street plotline was cheesy but i loved it , i love to see autism friend groups. they're very sweet. path of legends has an excellent motivator in 'your buddy's dog is sick' and like FUCK dude i'm not letting this guys dogy die!!!! arven is a very sweet character so it's nice to help him out. victory road is more standard fare but i liked the new take on the elite 4 (the interview and there being multiple champions). but obviously the closing act really sells it for me. i've seen people say it makes less sense in scarlet because sada is caveman themed, but i honestly think this made it more interesting. if i was playing violet i wouldve been like ohh yeah of course the guy in the glowy robot space suit is an android but the juxtaposition between ancient and futuristic stuff in scarlet makes it more impactful imo. i like how a futuristic ai can only function with the power of ancient crystals, ties it into both games nicely. plus sada sacrificing herself is a little sadder since i doubt there's more chargers in dinosaur times than the far future (she's double DEAD dead). i'm also just a sucker for evil ai and glitch effects anyway

MUSIC: gooooooood!!! there's been some mixed reception on the gym leader theme but it grew on me. penny's theme is one of my favs but all of the team star related ones are good. the area zero theme is genuinely incredible

GAMEPLAY: it sure is a pokemon game. i had some performance issues mainly loading times before/after battles and after cutscenes. i crashed randomly once during the orthworm mission when i went into its tunnel but nothing to the extent i've seen online (not to say it didn't happen). for what it's worth, i was playing it in handheld. but the basic pokemon battle formula always entertains me. the new gimmick is pretty so i like it.

VISUALS: it absolutely could be better but it's not distractingly bad. it's more just servicable. the updated textures (and sometimes models!) of pokemon look good and the humans look good too. definitely improved some animations (but i missed gloria's unique little tiptoe animation downstairs from swsh). the environment flops a lot, especially when it's not in towns.

Eli and Raven have a distantish cousin who lives in galar named Ashe. Ashe is kinda evil

Like the week before they were supposed to start attending uva Floridian eli woke up early and he was like "man I'm tired AAAAA-" and fell down the fucking stairs. Luckily instead of pulling a mari arceus sent him back in time to hisui at that exact moment! Instead of falling down the stairs he fell thousands of feet off above the top of mount coronet isntead :)

He really likes his job as a survey corps member and h finds Pokemon fascinating and learning about them fun. And he loves to explore and travel, but he also likes the quietness of jubilife village and when he grows older he wants to settle down and live in a cabin or.something

He doesn't remember alot about his family and where he came from but he really wants to go home because even if he likes it here in hisui he feels it's really important he gets home as soon as possible, like he's missing something, like he's missing. my fav is battling between SV or BW. SV, for all its modern gaming industry flawz, has an amazing story for a kids game, fun characterz, a great pokedex, a fucking BANGER CLIMAX TO TEH STORY, and Tinkaton. itz great all around and it truly is a shame that so many people were pushed away from it. also I actually liek th graphicz welcome to my evil cyberreality. on teh other hand, BW is insanely nostalgic & most of my childhood pokemon memoriez are about it. i loved DPPt and HGSS, still do, but BW is th first time I remember consciously understanding ‘whoa, there’s gonna be New Pokemon and a New Game to play’, and I remember th internet culture around it so vividly (for better or for worse.. Trubbish hate sucked but also? Smugleaf.). th restrained dex made it super memorable and th story’z just god damn Good. it also has Archeops. for some reason I have th most vivid memory of playing B2W2 in th car and being in Lentimas Town and th Strange House while my mom listened to Craig by Stephen Lynch on teh radio . i have no idea why I remember dis . anywayz pokemon is good

I think I'm gonna write an actual like, real review of it, but here's my mini review of Pokemon Violet to get my thoughts summarized.

The latest entries to pokemon, while a bold step in a new direction, may be a step into Alaskan snow in flip-flops. The game has some great ideas and lofty ambitions, and for what it does accomplish, there's clearly a lot of fun to be had with the product that was delivered, however, the preparation given to bring these ideas into fruition was far under prioritized.

To speak kindly of the game before speaking ill, I have always, and will always, love pokemon. It's a series that is very near and dear to me, and there's a certain magic that comes with learning all about the new creatures that have been added to the growing roster of canonized monster designs I've come to love, especially on a semi-blind playthrough, the magic of learning about and hunting down as many new pokemon is unmatched. SV does deliver on this, as I feel that this generation has a series of lovely pokemon designs that I have fallen in love with in my short time with them. (Tinkaton, Revavroom, Ceruledge, Meowscarada, and Chi-Yu are all new favorites)

Additionally, the story of SV is quite well done, easily one of the best-executed stories in pokemon in a while, and while I don't think I'm comfortable calling it "better than" the story of BW/BW2, I feel that it's comparable in quality. Characters, themes, and plot points all feel surprisingly natural in a game that theoretically allows you to go off and challenge its many hurdles in any order, utilizing the scripted events that it does have cleverly, and to great effect. I particularly enjoyed the Team Star narrative, and how it takes the "evil team" formula that pokemon has had for a long time, and juxtaposes the idea of a group of bullies onto it, only to learn over time that they're just bullied people sticking together, and aren't bad, just misrepresented.

On the basis of the typical gameplay loop, SV delivers Very well. The incorporation of overworld encounters and optional trainer battles allows the player to feel free and uninhibited by the game itself, and free to engage with exactly as much content as they would like to, whether this be picking and choosing what pokemon to battle in the wild, or which trainers if any, they feel the need to battle. SV's design philosophy seems to be prioritizing freedom as much as possible, while also meaningfully rewarding progression, and I feel that the game flow comes off as organic.

This is to say, that this game has more team-building potential out of the gate than just about any other pokemon game, with countless pokemon accessible to the player even moments from starting the game, appealing to collection freaks and competitive fans alike.

Then, what's the problem?

In short, the game is unfinished. The game, at launch, would routinely dip to what I could ascertain to be 12-17 FPS regularly, and while steps have been taken already to make the drops in framerate far less drastic, the time to do that incredibly important work is before release, not after. The framerate, the chief among issues, and generally its lack of optimization for switch hardware, sometimes spoils the other wonderful parts of the game. Finding pokemon is less intriguing when extreme pop-in only allows you to look at pokemon less than 20 feet away from you, and somewhat harms the immersion of the experience. And while updated models and style of the pokemon have been made, and they're quite impressive, it's hard to say that the pokemon "look good" when after 4 appear on screen at once, or even two pokemon with some attacks, their frames drop far below what they should.

Additionally, while this game loads quickly traveling between areas, smaller, more subtle, but similarly important loading times feel far, far too long. The boxes take far too long to load the images of your pokemon in each individual box, which somewhat harms the collection fantasy, and upon starting a battle with a wild pokemon, their "low poly open world" model will still be loaded long into the first turn. Additionally, menuing remains rather clunky and sluggish, which quickly becomes annoying when things like Wonder Trade or other such "quick" menuing activities take a minimum of 45 seconds due to their lack of optimization.

The issues I'm listing sound comparatively minor, however, in an experience as dependent on a lack of obstruction as SV are clearly trying to be, the failure to deliver on a product that runs consistently and reasonably is a major slight against it.

These issues are not deliberate design choices that simply do not work, these larger issues are a product of the dev teams' inability to put out the product that wouldn't have these problems, and the issues with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are by and large issues with management, not the dev team themselves. The worrying pace at which Pokemon games are released, especially considering that SV is not even our first major open-world Pokemon release this year, is clearly harming Game Freak's ability to provide a product that will meet the expectations of both fans AND the artists themselves.

SV is in many ways, an extremely fun game that has been weighed down by the weight of the industry, and as much as I loved the time and fun that I had with it, its issues cannot be overlooked. I can't say that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, in their current state, are "good" games. Violet is a game that I enjoyed, it's a game that perhaps will be good in the future following patches and performance updates, but at current, the development issues that are so apparent and the clear lack of optimization for switch hardware made by these issues genuinely harm my perception of the game quite a bit.

Is it fun? Yeah. Is it good? No.

Finizen: Finally, after eight generations, we have a dolphin pokemon.

Palafin: It's ironic that the dolphin pokemon is a hero when real life dolphins are evil.

Varoom and Revavroom: Is the first poison/steel types being egines supposed to be a social commentary on how gas cars are bad for the environment?

Cyclizar: Behold, lizard bike!

Orthworm: How can I roast orthworm when it is such derp baby?

Glimmet: It looks like a certain type of plug.

Glimmora: Why was this Geeta's ace instead of kingambit!?

Grevard: This dog is cute yet terrifying at the same time.

Houndstone: The "why isn't this a rock type" pokemon.

Flamigo: I know the design isn't really creative, but I'm glad we finally got a flamingo pokemon.(I've been wanting one ever since I saw a fake leak of an flamingo based Alolan dodrio.)

Cetoddle: It's a baby whale, I can't roast that.

Cetitan: Looks way stronger than it actually is.

Dondozo: This is just wishcash on steroids.

Annihilape: Poor primape, no one cared about it until it died.

Scream Tail: The second shiny I've ever failed.(I thought the regular had red eyes)

Brute Bonnet: Why does it have three legs?

Flutter Mane: You're not a paradox pokemon, you're just a misdreavus with crazier hair, don't lie.

Slither Wing: This is actually a really cool design.

Sandy Shocks: This past paradox makes the least amount of sense!(that's probably the point though)

Iron Threads: It's clear which version had more thought put into their paradox designs.

Iron Bundle: Is this supposed to be a social commentary about how fake and consumeristic Christmas has become?

Iron Hands: "Alright, Pinhead. You're time is up"

Iron Jungulis: Is that even a word!?

Iron Moth and Iron Thorns: It's just Mothra and Mecha Godzilla.

Frigibax, Arctibax, and Baxcalibur: These are all just icy Godzillas!

Gimmigoul: This has got to be one of the most annoying pokemon to evolve!

Gholdengo: It looks like a mascot for string cheese.

Wo-Chien: This is the third grass/dark type in this game!

Chien-Pao: It has the least realistic design out of the four.(But they're still my favorite)

Ting-Lu: I've heard of pinhead but I've never heard of domehead!

Chi-Yu: How are you able to see if you have beads for eyes?

Roaring Moon: This is just an improved redesign of mega salamance.

Iron Valiant: The only future paradox worth catching outside of completing the pokedex.

Koraidon and Miraidon: So Arven's parents, were these pokemon worth dying over!?

Walking Wake and Iron Leaves: So what will you choose? An awesome and ferocious water dragon beast, or a robotic deer thing?

Dipplin: Mmmm caramel apple....

poltchageist: As sadistic as most other ghost types.

Sinistcha: Tis just proves that the ghost type is actually the evil type and not the dark type.

Okidogi: Literally just a green buff doge.

Munkidori: The new ugliest psychic type.

Fezandipiti: Damn, look at those eyelashes!

Ogrepon: She killed the loyal three just because they stole her masks, I don't think that's a proportional punishment.(J.K I know she didn't kill them on purpose)

Blood Moon Ursaluna: It's a zombie bear.(not really)

Raging Bolt: "It's a giraffe!"

Iron Crown: Definatly boring when compared to raging bolt.

Archladon: Ah yes, buildings definitely evolve into bridges.

Terapagos: This pokemon looks terrible without its makeup.

FIRST GAME: Silver. I watched the cartoon first and my mom bought me the game at my 5th birthday!!

FAVOURITE SPINOFF GAME: I admit I haven’t played many so of course I might be biased, but Legend Arceus is still my second overall favorite game so. Yeah.

FAVOURITE EVIL TEAM: sighs. Looks at Skull.

FAVOURITE TEAM LEADER: Like of course I’d go with Guzma, but when I think about Actually Super Evil Villains.......... my mind goes to Archer actually? Like of course there are many worse villains in the series but there’s something about Archer that Gets Me

FAVOURITE STARTER: nostalgia says Chikorita, my heart says Torterra. I just think Grass Type starters are neat.

FAVOURITE BOX LEGENDARY: I fell in love with Miraidon. It’s been so long since a game made me truly care about Legendaries and I’d give my life for the robolizard. However it isn’t “really” a legendary I guess so Giratina is also incredibly pog 

FAVOURITE POKEMON: Gengar, always and forever. Close seconds are Dragonair, Torterra, Tinkaton, Miraidon and Giratina

FAVOURITE PROFESSOR: I Believe In Professor Birch Supremacy

FAVOURITE RIVAL: I’m biased so of course Silver ♥ I have so many feelings about Hop and Nemona too tho

FAVOURITE CHAMPION: sighs. Lance. I literally called my favorite OC after him cmon I care him. I can hide his name behind his mom being into Arthurian mythos but the real gio fans know that Sharpkeen is named after the most dragon tamer ever

FAVOURITE CHARACTER (if not already covered): Oh yea they’ve been already cited up there with Guzma and Silver lmao, and while I adore Akari I also know I adore her specifically in the way I write her. Sooo let me just drop here Arven, Leon, Spark and N real quick tho.

FAVOURITE STORY: ScaVio, hands down, with BW and Legends being very close seconds

FAVOURITE MUSIC: Oh God Oh Man no you don’t understand I adore soundtracks so uhh.
