crane flies in general are underappreciated animals but the few people who do like them mostly focus on their gangly features and complete lack of self-preservation. i don't mean to draw attention away from those but i personally like their tiny bobbleheads the most, with those bead curtain style antennae and absurd mouthparts

my best guesses:
1. male spring fishfly (Chauliodes pectinicornis)
2. female fishfly (Chauliodes pectinicornis)
3. crane fly (Tipula furca)
4. southern emerald (Synchlora frondaria)
5. moth (genus Athetis?)
the fishflies are a great find!

Microscopic worms that live their lives in the highly radioactive environment of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) appear to do so completely free of radiation damage. Nematodes collected from the area have shown no sign of damage to their genomes, contrary to what might be expected for organisms living in such a dangerous place. The finding, published earlier this year, doesn't suggest the CEZ is safe, the researchers say, but rather the worms are resilient and able to adroitly adapt to conditions that might be inhospitable to other species. This, says a team of biologists led by Sophia Tintori of New York University, could offer some insights into DNA repair mechanisms that could one day be adapted for use in human medicine.

Insect Highlights of 2024
With the new year celebrations scheduled for this weekend, I thought it best to share some of my favorite insect specimens from this year, rather than one single typed of insect. The pictures here haven't been uploaded to the blog in a post, so today they can all share the spotlight. There are many familiar faces here and all of them are incredible and beautiful creatures. Hopefully there are even more insect delights and finds to enjoy in the upcoming year. To ring in the new year, we have the following insects:
Four-Spotted Skimmer - Libellula quadrimaculata - Order Odonata (May 24th)
Giant Crane Fly - Tipula metacomet - Order Diptera (September 16th)
Spring Fishfly - Chauliodes rastricornis - Order Megaloptera (May 27th - from Muskoka)
Milkweed Aphids - Aphis nerii - Order Hemiptera (September 3rd - alongside German Yellowjackets)
Oil Beetle - Meloe campanicollis - Order Coleoptera (October 21st)
Fall Webworm Caterpillars - Hyphantria cunea - Order Lepidoptera (July 25th)
Great Golden Digger Wasp - Sphex ichneumoneus - Order Hymenoptera (July 1st)
European Earwig - Forficula auricularia - Order Dermaptera (September 21st)
Common Red Soldier Beetle - Rhagonycha fulva - Order Coleoptera (July 1st)
Black-Legged Meadow Katydid - Orchelimum nigripes - Order Orthoptera (October 27)
All pictures here were taken in 2024 with a Google Pixel 4.
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year and a marvelous 2025! Thank you everyone for making this another beautiful year of insect observations! I hope to reach even more of you this year with many more wonderful insect pictures and videos. Enjoy your celebrations!

I've seen more nature in the past hour than usual. Immediately upon arriving home I saw a blue tailed lizard on my porch, I tried to get a picture, but it ran behind the mop bucket first. I did get a picture of the Tipula maxima on my bedroom wall, however, I don't know where it is now, though. And then there was a clover mite crawling on my phone. If you see a Tipula maxima or clover mite you're supposed to kill it, but I didn't. Who am I to decide what gets to live and die? Does it being an insect or arachnid make it better? I don't think so.
