Personal Views on Potentially Problematic Falsettos Things

(Go ahead and label me a heretic now. I promise I’m only sharing my personal views.)

Character/Theme Discussions that Escalate Quickly

I feel like it would be easier to talk about the Falsettos characters/themes if we prefaced which version of the show or which show we’re talking about.

I’m not saying everyone yells at each other or that discussion is negative, but I’ve seen some pretty hostile chats.

For example... revival Falsettos Mendel (while being the same character) is fairly different from OOBC March of the Falsettos Mendel. Revival Falsettos Trina is significantly different from In Trousers (both 1979 and 1985), OOBC March of the Falsettos, OOBC Falsettoland, and OBC Trina. Especially with Trina, she wasn’t played by the same person in any of the versions except for In Trousers (1979) and OOBC March of the Falsettos!

Also, lyrics change from show to show. Like, you’ll notice Trina’s Song and her reprise are noticeably less hopeful than in the Revival. I mentioned that to a friend who had never heard either MotF or Falsettoland and it blew her mind.

Context matters!

“ALL OF THEM ARE JEWISH!”

Here’s one... the fact that “All the characters are Jewish.” Yes... and no? In the original, Cordelia is a kosher caterer. Implied to be Jewish. In the revival, she’s a Shiksa. Not Jewish. Also, Whizzer is half-Jewish. So before someone uses strong language (i.e. swearing and threats and guilt) to insist that Christmas fics or other fics have absolutely no place in Falsettos, I argue that maybe, under certain circumstances, they do!

Personal experience: I have some Christian family and some Jewish family! I appreciate both religions and religious holidays! It doesn’t mean that I have to choose! I’ve gone to church on Christmas and Temple on Rosh HaShanah (as examples).

I’m not saying dress the entire TKF in Christmas sweaters and have them sing carols, but maybe not erase two of the characters’ potential identities?

That’s it. That’s all I’ve got for now. These are my honest thoughts. If you would like to discuss, please reply civilly. I’m not saying you have to agree, I’m just saying that I respond better to a conversation than verbal assault.

SHORT DRABBLE REQUEST: tkf try to smuggle Jason into an R-rated movie at the movie theater. Whether they succeed or not is up to you but - I gotta tell you - it better be some Oceans Eleven type shit (I want a HEIST).

Okay so this ended up being about two million years longer than a drabble. It’s also a modern au bc why not? Enjoy!

“Okay,so here’s the plan—” Mendel says this with the utmost seriousness as he unrollsa large sheet of white paper to cover the top of the dining room table.Cordelia, Charlotte, and Jason lean forward expectantly. Whizzer, always thecontrarian, leans back in his chair, folding his arms over his chest despiteknowing this action will make his designer shirt wrinkle. With all the flourishof a magician revealing a bouquet sprung from the tip of his wand, Mendeluncaps a black Mr. Sketch marker. Cordelia frowns as the scent of blacklicorice fills the air.

“Do we really have to use that marker?” She asks, wrinkling hernose.

“Yes.” Mendel replies with a curt nod.He bends over the paper and draws a large, non-descript rectangle in themiddle. In big, blocky capitals, he labels the rectangle “Cineplex 9”, andlabels the surrounding space “Parking Lot”.

“To get Jason into It—and avoid Trina ever finding out—everythingmust play out exactly as I describeit here.” He explains. “First, I will enter the theater from the parking lot—” Hepoints at the word on the paper.

“Mendel, we understand how onephysically goes to the movies.” Whizzer sighs, examining his fingernailsdisinterestedly.

“—and approach the ticket counter,”Mendel continues, ignoring Whizzer’s snarking and drawing a smaller rectanglewithin the large one, which he labels accordingly. “Where I will purchase oneadult ticket. At this point, Jason will already be in position in the arcade; Iwill meet him there and give him the recently purchased ticket. It will beplaced in his pocket—”

“Is all this detail really necessary?” Charlotte asks whileMendel draws in the arcade, and adds a concession stand and a little square helabels “you know that guy that takes your tickets? What’s that guy called? Idon’t know, but it’s him”.

“Of course.” Mendel replies. “Jasonand his ticket will remain in the arcade until he receives the signal fromCordelia, who will be watching Whizzer from her position at the concessionstand—”

“Wait.” Cordelia cuts in. “How will Iknow when to give the signal.”

“I’m getting there.” Mendel says. “Whizzer,will be at the—you know that guy that takes your tickets? What’s that guycalled? I don’t know, but anyway that’s where Whizzer’ll be. He’ll flirt withhim and distract him—”

“Wait, wait, wait,” Whizzer says,sitting up. “Is this guy actually gay? I don’t want to make a fool of myself.”

“He is.” Mendel assures him. “He’s notout, but he is. Think Marvin, circa 2004.” Whizzer nods and leans back in hisseat, clearly satisfied with this answer.

“But how do I know when to give thesignal?” Cordelia presses.

“When the tickety guy is fullydistracted by Whizzer, you give the signal.” Mendel says. “Then Jason, you willsneak by. Whizzer, you’ll have to keep him distracted long enough for Jason toround the corner, so he won’t be spotted if the tickety guy turns around.”

“Got it.”

“Where do I come in?” Charlotte asks,raising her hand in the air.

“You, Charlotte, will be hanging outhere—” He draws an x in the middle of the rectangle. “Because you will bekeeping look out, and, should the need arise, create a loud and obnoxiousdistraction.”

“I’m not—”

“Charlotte, please.” Mendel sighs. “Weall have to stick to the plan. For Jason.” Charlotte sighs in response, essentiallysaying ‘fine’. Jason and Mendel share a fist bump.

“Is everyone clear?” Mendel asks,capping the marker as he receives a sea of nods around the table.

Mendel moves to roll the poorly drawnmap up, but hears the front door open, so, naturally, he freezes, fullyexpecting Trina to walk in.

Instead, it’s Marvin. He crosses tojoin them, wrapping an arm over Whizzer’s chest and pressing a kiss to histemple as he surveys the paper on the table.

“Hi, babe.” Whizzer hums.

“Whatare you guys doing?” Marvin asks, already sounding exasperated.

“We’ve crafted a foolproof plan forsneaking Jason into an R-rated movie.” Mendel explains, gesturing proudly tohis handiwork.

“Why?” Marvin asks, knitting hiseyebrows together.

“Because he is a child who wants tosee a horror movie?” Cordelia offers, looking more than a little confused.

“Yeah, sure, but the rest of you areadults.” Marvin says. This receives four completely blank stares, so he adds: “Anyoneof you can take him to an R-rated film as long as you see it with him.Literally none of this was necessary.”

“Are you serious?” Charlotte asks, herface falling. “I took the afternoon off for this!” Marvin lets out a snidelittle chuckle, and both lesbians smack him from across the table.

“Hey!” He cries, trying to back out oftheir reach. “It’s not my fault none of you bothered to do any research.”

In his last weeks, Whizzer writes letters to each of the TKF. Jason is the one who, after Whizzer dies, writes a reply. He knows it's stupid, and yet, every year on the anniversary of Whizzer's death, he goes to the cemetery with a chess piece an an envelope in hand.

When Jason visits with his letter and chess pieces and sometimes just talk to Whizzer’s monument. He knows Whizzer can’t hear him, but it’s therapeutic to read his letter aloud to it.

First, after an aggressive war on Gaza City and its revival, we were displaced from our 3-storey house in which I and my family of 3 members live.

My father's family consists of 8 members

My grandfather, may God have mercy on him, was martyred by occupation aircraft on 12/14/2023.

The one who was martyred while he was leaving the house to check on our house next to him, which could not be reached due to a brutal enemy who does not differentiate between anyone in death, went out to check on our house, which we were not in because of my displacement to Rafah, me, my father, and our families due to the intensity of the fighting in Khan Yunis, and after that A few days ago, our store in which my father and brothers work was bombed by occupation aircraft. He was working to gather his strength from it and meet the needs of our house, which no longer exists due to the bombing. We ask you to help and contribute, even if just a little, by donating to us so that we can compensate for a little of what we lost.
