The Show Must Go On and it’s a Gertrude one. I love Gertrude. Yes, I know she did terrible things her assistants but it’s very nice to have an older woman character who is not just a fluffy dementia ridden non-entity
And I love the use of the Mechanical Turk. It’s a fantastic thing and perfect to be used in a horror story about manipulation (and if you like this story I’d highly recommend reading Anna Mazzola’s Clockwork Girl)
Elias so office manager - insisting everyone going to save the world keeps their receipts to claim expenses
And now - Jonmartin. Jon insisting that Martin stays behind. Very insistent. Does Jon know how much Martin matters to him yet? He’s very all-knowing when it comes to everyone else, is he self-knowing? Anyway. The reason Jon insists Martin stays behind is rubbish - he’s obviously not wanting Martin in danger.
And poor Martin, pissed off ‘sit around drinking tea until the world ends!’

Doodles from MAG 116 - MAG 120
Spoilers for The Magnus Archives, Season 3
I have finally finished season 3 of The Magnus Archives and holy it was amazing!! I loved Nikola as an antagonist, they were so fun to listen to. I quite liked how sudden Tim’s death was, I already knew before then that he was going to die but it shocked me still when it happened. I’m interested to see how season 4 plays out, I have some general knowledge of some of the events that happen in that season but besides from that I’m completely clueless.

Mag 116 - The Show Must Go On
Jon only wanted Martin to stay back because he wanted to protect him. He wanted to keep Martin safe. He Knew how dangerous it was going to be. He wanted to keep Martin safe.
Martin doesn’t see it that way. He sees it as “Jon doesn’t think I’m good enough” and that’s probably part of what makes him susceptible to the Lonely later on.
God, this is so fucking tragic. It’s a fucking tragedy.

big fan of mag 116 because i like to imagine elias putting the gertrude tape on, and then all of them just sit in a circle, listening. tim slowly falls asleep because he finds her voice soothing. melanie starts drawing on the ground out of boredom. elias is giggling and kicking his feet like this is a fun sleepover activity

WHY IS MARTIN GETTING LEFT OUT??? does Elias want to make him the next Archivist?
Also, the fact that in the middle of all this Elias wants them to keep receipts so they can be reimbursed-
Anyway,
Elias: Don't bring Tim.
Jon: Tim, grab an axe

mag 115 - AW HELEN. SHE JUST WANTS HELP. SHE CANT HELP WHAT SHE IS :(((
mag 116 - this statement is just what my dreams are like when I take melatonin lol
I know people have said that Elias loves his job, but it is so funny to see (hear?) him being a generally malevolent force, then is just like "oh yeah, bring me your receipts so I can do your paperwork :)" like sir its nearly the end of the world and you're concerned about expense reports?? 😭😭
Tim :(( my lovely little tragedy :(((
mag 117 - I!! LOVE!!! MELANIE!! YES FEMININE RAGE GO OFF GIRL I'm not sure if this is hypocritical considering I don't like Daisy all that much, but considering I'm the oldest daughter and a middle child, I feel like I can relate to Melanie's fight more than Daisy
catch me preemptively crying over tim he really is just a victim of the world around him doing his best to stay afloat :(((
also Jon burning the page saying "just rest" 😭😭 on the floor. sobbing. I know the others (and himself) want him to be cold like Gertrude was but the way he looks after the others really is one of the most compelling parts of his character
also the goofiness of Jon talking around the "office gossip" and martin correcting himself too quickly while saying he hopes Jon will be okay is so funny, like wym their relationship is forming now, in the middle of a potential apocalypse, it helps bring some light to a pretty heavy series all things considered
this series is really gonna be some Shakespearean level tragedy isn't it. gonna pull a Hamlet "everyone dies because they all thought they were right and because of the nuance they were but they're still in a tragedy and they can't do anything about it" like I know horror isn't known for happy endings, but really the way this is written it's much more compelling than horror I've seen before (which is probably why I actually like it), it's more of a supernatural tragedy than a monster-of-the-week horror story at his point (which is more of what season 1 was)
alright going into the season 3 finale, wish me luck 🫡

I think the main appeal I find with Elias is. He's all seeing and immortal yes. But his main passion is and remains managing. Dude loves paperwork. Hey, work with something you love and you'll never work a day in your life, you know.

Another Real Historical People statement! It's not actually known who operated the Mechanical Turk during its original tour, but Abraham Janssen was one of the best chess players in the world at one time, so he'd certainly have been a good choice.
Love the description of the Unknowing, as well as the clarity of the Slaughter Squad in contrast to it. The Slaughter certainly does have a directness of approach.
Martin: How dare you leave me behind?! I am shocked! Shocked, I say! 😉
I hope the B&B was nice, at least.
"That axe of yours" is hilarious to me, because this is the first time it's been mentioned since Jon presumably dropped it in Artefact Storage after destroying the Web table (otherwise we'd have ended up with Brutal Axe Murder). I can only imagine that Artefact Storage just... kept it there, because they don't let an object of unknown provenance leave without studying it first. Two and a half months later, Jon shows up in absolutely disastrous condition and is like "Yeah, um... that's mine?" (Sonja: "EXPLAIN. 😡") After which I guess it's just been in his office? Visibly enough that it is well known that it's there? Leaning against the side of his desk or something...
Axe has become a recurring character in a way the pipe never managed

First listen to: MAG 116 - The Show Must Go On
I know that this is a Stranger focused statement but it feels like it also has notes of the Spiral and the Flesh. Maybe even the Lonely if you think about it. Your body is twisted in ways that you could never imagine. It feels so wrong that you can’t even remember what “right” is anymore. The one thing that you do know is that no one can save you. Isn’t that neat?
Elias is such a prick and I love it. I’m really curious about how his powers work. He’s been doing this for a long time so I imagine he’s as powerful as he’ll ever be. He certainly knew about their plan to bomb the Stranger ritual even though that was when Basira and Daisy were supposed to be distracting him.
He didn’t know about Tim’s background w/ the Stranger until Tim made his statement. I think they’ve mentioned that Elias has to make the effort to know something. He doesn’t automatically know everything about a person unless he makes the effort to do so. So either he fully knows what Jon and crew are planning and doesn’t care or he believes them enough that he hasn’t bothered to check.
