Go Watch the Venture Brothers

So just heard the complete and utter Bullshit news that Adult Swim has cancelled one of (if not the best shows) they have the Venture Bros. This series is one of those shows that for WHATEVER reason never got to the level of fandom Rick and Morty has even though they’ve been at the genre parody game longer and in my opinion better. 

The series is about Rusty Venture former boy adventurer and failing super scientist who in an attempt to keep his head above water in debt goes around with his two boys Hank and Dean, and bodyguard Brock on misadventues while various legal archnemisis go after him, such as the Monarch. 

So if you never watched or never heard of this 7 season series let me give you a break down on why you should, 

1) Art Style & Animation

Venture bros is one of those rare Adult aimed animated series that that really truly tries to utilize their medium to the best of their abilities. Season 1 had like such a small budget and corners had to be cut so it can be a little hard to watch at times. 

But with each passing season they get a little better, a little more fluid, go just a little harder and it truly feels rewarding to watch. Like seeing an artist you follow online improve over the years. Like they COULD have stayed with the choppy and stiff animation from season 1 it fit right in with its fellow adult animated shows but it didn’t. They strove for quality to have something that matched the story they were telling.

2) The Writing 

Venture Bros has some of the tightest and consistently great writing of ANY serialized show I’ve seen, adult, animated or other wise. Wanna know why? Cause it’s all done by TWO people (save for like one ep each season where one other person is allowed to touch their baby). Yeah TWO people and they work their asses off every season to interject, humor, refrences, parody, plot and character development in equal measure. 

3) Character Development

Um yes in case you were wondering that’s right an adult animated show has CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT  that holds as the series goes on. Not to give spoilers but characters will go through changes in alignment, relationships will develop and change, some characters will go through negative arcs where they are straight up unbareable for a season before coming out the other side even better than they were before. There is no end of epsiode or even end of season reset. Characters, settings, and dynamics all change over the course of the show and it feels just so god damn good.

4) Story Development 

Just like the characters the story of the Venture Bros grows and changes each season. Things that are set up even as early as season one are paid off as the series goes on. Like not to be that bitch but you know how RIck and Morty teases an overarching plot ALL THE TIME but like will often just spit in the face of fans hoping for more than like one episode a season addressing it? Yeahhhhhhh that doesnt happen here, fans are consistently rewarded for putting the time in to rewatch and really think about what happened in the series. Characters that are seen in the background or are just referenced by other characters will be brought in to be recurring characters, things that start off as a small detail or gag will be given larger relevance and each time they do this you get that “OH I remember that from last season! So thats what it was!” The writers WANT you to rewatch, they WANT you to analyze and they WANT you to theorize, and they give you a show that gives back the time you put in.

5) Parody & Reference 

This series does a great thing with parody. They make real characters  who are just as enjoyable as the characters they parody, they make story lines that both poke fun at the absurdity of the media but shows the writers love for it. So often parody and references are just used to mock the thing but with Venture Bros you feel the love and care so when you know the thing being parodied you can laugh but feel good about laughing cause they are never laughing at a thing maybe you cared for in your youth but rather laughing with it.

And it’s never just one thing. When they parody a thing its often layered with other things to make it even more unique. Scooby-Doo is overlayed with famous criminals, Laura Croft is mixed Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, GI Joe is given the look of the Village People and so on. They never go for the easy joke or reference. Hell theres an episode that starts with them reciting the lyrics to David Bowies Space Oddity for really no reason other than they could. They weave these things in naturally with their setting and characters so nothing feels out of place. Like if you dont catch a reference or parody you dont feel like “I think this isa reference to something?” like a LOT of things do not just adult animated shows. You arent taken out of the moment cause it all feels so natural. 

6) The Characters 

God damn these characters, I could go on for hours about these characters. From main to one off these are some of the most likeable characters you can find. I mean it when I say I can’t think of a single character I wish they had cut cause they are all so well created. Even the ones I hate i have fun hating cause they were made to be that way. I’ll be good though I’ll only talk about my absolute top faves.

- The Monarchs

You ever sit and wish villain couples could have functional  healthy relationships? Well look no further than Malcom Fitzcarraldo aka The Monarch and Dr. Shelia Girlfriend (yes that is her last name). The Monarch is a high strung impulsive saturday morning cartoon villain whos tendency to over react is only matched by his unspecified hatred of Dr. Venture. And Dr. G is his nonsense partner in crime who will cut a bitch if they don’t play by their admittedly weird rules. Both characters are great on their own but are better together. Though that doesnt mean they always get along. Like a real couple they have their ups and downs they fight, break up, make-up and grow stronger in their relationship with each season. 

- Shore Leave

Ok ok so I want you to imagine James Bond, mixed with GI Joe simmering in a cocktail of the most flamboyant gay men you have ever seen and you have one of my favorite gay characters/characters in general. Shore Leave is a member of OSI (the shows SHEILD/GI Joe parody organization) he’s loud, brash, flippant, sassy and highly competent at his job loving every second of getting to beat bad guys down within an inch of their life. I love seeing him play off the stoic Brock and the two have this great brotherly dynamic that’s never called into question. He also gets to have a very cute romance with Al the Alchemist (who is also great). I could talk about this man all day.

- Dr. Rusty Venture

They did such a good job with this man. He’s a self serving, sexist, perverted, whinny, self important asshole and yet you feel pity and genuine sympathy for him and want him to succeed. You can see how Dr. V was given a raw deal by his father who seemed to care more about his adventures than his sons well being and how this molded him into the bitter man he is today, but on the flip side you can see where he chose to use that as a crutch for his worst behaviors and impulses. Seeing him slowly grow and change and be an actual good father to his boys while all the while still be a giant dick is actually really great. 

- Dr. Byron Orpheus 

Ahhhhh Dr. Orpheus part Dr. Strange Parody part busybody stay at home dad, he’s just such a delight. Dr. Orpheus is a divorcee, with an unfulfilling job of maintaining order to the cosmos (which isnt as hard as one might think), and uses his magical ablities in ways most of us would (ie menial tasks and home chores). Overly dramatic and affectionate Dr. O is a delight whenever he appears, but he’s at his best around his daughter and old friends The Order of the Triad. 

Again I can go on but all these characters ranging from main to recurring are crafted with the utmost care for you to want to see them succeed or fail, to see them again even if you know it’ll never happen, and want them to cross paths with other characters. 

The Venture Bros is one of those series that I will ALWAYS recommend even to the pickiest of humor tastes. But if you don’t believe its as good as I said or don’t think the concept is to your tastes I’ll recommend a few eps that I think best show off the base idea of the series without giving much away. In terms of plot and spoilers, though somethings wont make a lot of sense. 

- S1 ep10 "Tag Sale – You're It!" - Dr. V is having a yard sale so of course all manner of costumed weirdos show up.  - S2 ep5 "Twenty Years to Midnight" - basically a fetch quest around the world to save the planet with daddy issues - S3 ep2 "The Doctor Is Sin" - Again daddy issues but with one of the best recurring characters and a great showcase of the series deeper emotional plots - S4 ep6 "Self-Medication" - Really embraces the parody as Rusty goes to a former boy adventurer support group.  Anyway the show is 7 seasons with 80 episodes, please go watch it. I will never forgive @adultswim​ for cancelling what was to be their final season. And in closing GO TEAM VENTURE!

Oh yes, an ask ! What's the opinion/relation of Kate on the others companions ? Do they have a bestie ? Does she hate/dislike one of them ?

Hell yeah!! I am glad you ask about her, I absolutely adore talking about Kate! By the way, really funny fact, I have actually romanced most of the companions (Danse, I am coming for that ass), but canonicaly, their partners are Hancock and Nick! :D

Cait:

She admires her! Like, a lot! They think she is a super strong person, in both meanings! She loves how brave, how sassy she is! She’s just really fun to be with overall in Kate’s opinion!

About her drug addiction, Kate never really minded, but they were really concerned about her health. When Cait told her that she wanted to be cured, they didn’t hesitate to help her. 

Kate knows Cait can be a better person, especially under her influence! She constantly makes subtle comments that might make Cait change her opinion on things. Every once in a while they sit down to talk about her insecurities if she’s ok with it!

Funny extra: Since their names sound literally the same, Kate asks to be called Kat! Or to call Cait, “Irish Kate” tho expect a very angry irish person coming down your way.

Curie:

Absolutely LOVES her!! They love her curiosity and optimistic personality! Thinks she’s adorable.

They were very supportive of her wanting to be a synth, she thought it was very interesting! Though, was also very worried about how they would get to it...She was relieved that she didn’t have to take anybody's life!

Kate loves to make Curie flustered. It’s honestly adorable to her how she gets mad about getting compliments because she gets distracted, or confused. She lets her know why, tho! Hahah.

Codsworth:

He is family. He had been since before the war. It was the only person she could actually be herself.

When the bombs dropped she couldn’t stop thinking about him, if he was fine, if he had survived. When they got out of the vault, she was so happy to see Codsworth alive and well.

Kate wasn’t able to leave Codsworth’s side during 1 whole months, if it wasn’t for him and Preston, she would’ve given up on everything, on the ‘whealth, on shaun, on herself.

She adores his dumb sense of humor and his ridiculous british accent.

Danse:

She...likes him? She certainly enjoys his company and thinks he is kind and great but his bigotry and loyalty to the BOS makes her really uncomfortable.

Kate could connect to him on an emotional level, but never actually be interested in him, no matter how much they tried. BOS was just a major shit that made her uneasy. She only joined because they could be helpful to get rid of the Institute, and she was going to until…

They straight up refused and told off Maxson, but he didn’t give her the choice. When Haylen begged them to hear out Danse, they told her that she didn’t need to worry at all and would do everything in her power to keep Danse safe. They tried to change Maxson’s mind about Danse, about synths, but as she expected, he didn’t. After this whole incident, she quit the BOS and decided to destroy the Institute with the Minutemen.

She offered him to stay with her, on the lighthouse, but after a BOS attack to a settlement she left him in, Danse insisted to let him live alone, that it wasn’t safe to have him living there so close to Shaun. Kate sadly had to agree, she couldn’t risk to lose Shaun or any of her companions. She still goes and visits him every once in a while! Even got him to meet Shaun! They got along and share a love for cowboys.

Deacon:

LITERALLY BESTIES. Imagine those girls in highschool that are always together, wear matching clothes and call each other “slut”, “whore” and “bitch” affectionately? That’s them.

They literally wear matching clothes when they travel together. (I make ‘em wear matching clothes…)

Kate always introduces them as “ The Death Bunnies”.

She catched up immediately with his compulsive lying. She doesn’t mind it, in fact she might even go along with it, depending on the context and what type of lie it is. She tries to help him with it, along with his impostor syndrome (...which comes...literally sometimes?) and he tries to help her too. Hoes got each other’s back.

If they aren’t with their partners, they are with Deacon. Hell, even when they are with Nick and Hancock she brings him, of course if it’s not private. Deacon gets along with Nick so it isn’t much of a trouble...but they literally have no idea why Hancock dislikes him, tried to ask him but he said “some things are best left unknown”, which left Kate even more curious but respected his...privacy...I suppose? She asked Deacon, he said that it was no biggie, but to get Hancock to hold a long grudge like that is really weird so she can’t believe him. What did he do? She might never know...

They adore him overall, and loves his dumb comments, which she tries to always reply without bursting in laughter.

Dogmeat:

Light. Of. Her. Days. Well! Of course after her partners!! *gulps* 

They can’t go on with her days if she doesn’t pet Dogmeat at least...twice. She gives him kisses, pats and plays with him at the end of the day. 

When they first met Dogmeat, they almost couldn’t believe it. It was like a light in the dark, he definitely made her days easier as she was trying to stay stable during those 2 dark months.

She almost never goes out with Dogmeat because she is really worried the radiation might affect him, or even die out there. She usually has this fear with most of her companions, but specially him, as he is a literal animal and will probably not know if something is really dangerous or not just looking at it.

She usually falls asleep with him on the couch.

Hancock: 

Do I really even have to say anything? He is her everything along with Nick.

Kate’s first impression of him was: “Oh. FUCK. HOT?!”

Okay but really, she found him attractive and interesting after that first interaction. They had their doubts about him..you know him being a politician and all, but they quickly disappeared the more they interacted with him. Damn, the more she knew about him, the more she was interested in him. 

About Bobbi, she was totally into robbing McDonough, she did question Bobbi a lot though, as she instantly noticed how shady she was. She actually realized they were going for Hancock instead mid-way but waited to get there to confront her, make sure she was right. She didn’t do it for Hancock, instead because she wasn’t going to rob somebody who didn’t deserve being robbed. Tried to tell her to get out, nobody needed to be hurt but Bobbi refused to, so she had to pull the trigger. She knows it was the right thing to do, but can’t help but think if it could’ve ended differently.

She loves Hancock so much, they can’t stop thinking about him. “What would Hancock think about this?”, “Hancock would love this”, “I wish Hancock could see this”, “I miss Hancock”, literally being so clingy.

Overall, she thinks he’s such an amazing person: he’s kind, he’s brave, he’s funny, he’s understanding, he’s adorable, he’s caring, he’s determined, he’s (very) handsome...I really could go on.

She tries so hard to get him to understand that he is an amazing person. He appreciates the efforts.

MacCready:

LITERALLY A LITTLE BROTHER. They adore him! They love how funny and sassy he is.

Kate had to constantly tell him that she doesn’t care about caps and that he can keep ‘em if he wanted, that it looked like he needed it more than her, and she’d be right!

When Mac told her about Duncan she was upset at first, how could he just leave his child like that? Never acted on it, since she knew it would make it worse, but she could quickly understand where he came from and why he did what he did. Didn’t hesitate to help him find the cure for Duncan. 

They share a love for snipers and long ranged weapons so...that’s a topic they talk about a lot!

They both geek out about Silver Shroud every once in a while! Listen to the plays together and stuff like that!

Nick:

HERE WE GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

They didn’t like him when they first met. They liked Nick’s humor, but couldn’t stop thinking about how much he acted like a cop, and let’s say Kate had their share of bad situations with cops because of race, and shit like that. Kate didn’t know a lot about synths at the time, so she just guessed somebody programmed a fucking cop persona into him. And she wasn’t going to deal with a cop bot that probably had a stick up his ass.

Eventually, when she got so oversaturated with work, and stressed out with the whole Institute shit, she decided to go and do some of the cases with Nick, she couldn’t wait to show this “cop” that even a “civilian” could do his work. As she worked through the cases, she began to notice that Nick was...actually ok? She had more knowledge about synths at this point, but still didn’t understand how Nick worked exactly. He did tell her that he was a prototype, between Gen 1 and Gen 3, so she quickly realized that he was no ordinary bot. She eventually warmed up to him, and could see the appeal.

It was like a bomb dropped inside her head when Nick asked if she was doing fine. Kate had never actually opened up with anybody, not even with Hancock. She mostly worked over her depression and anxiety by keeping herself busy and unhealthy thoughts like “they need me to be strong, I am a role model right now.” with the whole being a General thing, and the fact that so many people relied on her. Kate tried to be dismissive of it, but Nick could see right through her, and insisted that it was ok to open up. She had to get really drunk to do any of that shit! So they told him that they should both go to a “more private place”, as an excuse to get her hands on some alcohol. Didn’t end up drinking any alcohol, and just spilled most of it. Found comfort on his “origin story” with Diamond City. 

He was a huge part in her full recovery, along with Hancock and Deacon. But honestly? If it wasn’t for him, it would’ve taken her snapping at anybody and being confronted about it to actually open up to anybody. 

She didn’t realize she had any feelings for him until a month after that event. That they were storming into Eddie’s shelter that she realized that they loved him. All of this they were doing for him, the cute comments, the praising and trust they had in him...it became so clear why while he was talking to her after killing Winter, she couldn’t help herself but to dump on him why he was not just “a shell” how he was so much more than that. She didn’t actually confess her feelings to him there, but they were pretty close to doing it. If it wasn’t for her thoughts stopping her from doing it, what would happen with Hancock now? She still loved him deeply...

Eventually, two weeks after, they took a break at the end of the day from missions with Nick, at the empty bar that she had built inside the Castle. It was midnight and mostly everyone had gone to sleep, so they could talk about whatever they wanted and get as drunk as she wanted. They were having so much fun until Nick brought up something she had said that day they ended Winter’s life. Fuck. God, they wished they hadn’t been so busy to actually sit down with Hancock and ask him what he thinks of polyamorous relationships because she was way too drunk this time to stop herself from doing anything stupid. And she didn’t, Nick did, he corresponded but said that he couldn’t let her do this to John. Hah! Little did they know Hancock was super into the both of them. (I actually want to make a lil’ fic about this!!)

They just love him so much and connect with him on a whole new level. He and John make them so happy, she literally couldn’t ask for anyone or anything better than what they have going on.

I know it isn’t exactly a love song, but “Agnes” by Glass Animals reminds me of them.

Piper:

WHAT A LADY, AM I RIGHT? They adore her!! 

She is literally her kind of lousy! Always speaking her mind, always speaking the truth. She admires what she does.

I really don’t have much to say about her, just that they really like her and that she thinks she’s a good friend and overall good person!

Was totally in to beat up McDonough’s ass.

Preston:

They think he is amazing!! He is so kind and caring, they like him a lot!

Let’s say that he liked him so much at some point they got together during those two months. It wasn’t a stable relationship and they both acknowledged that they just didn’t work. Besides, he was there when she met Hancock, and had this look in her eyes that he had never seen. Not to worry tho! He has been testing the waters with Sturges lately! ;)

They function better as friends! Besides, it was quite awkward for Kate their General/Soldier dynamic they had going on, so that was another thing!

She thinks he is so cool and amazing, and they let him know this!

Kate teases him about when they were a couple and they laugh it off.

Honestly, he was a big help for Kate during those months and she is really grateful for all his help. They were both really important for each other.

They didn’t get to know him as much as they wanted.

It all was happening so fast, they couldn’t do anything to convince him to get out of the Institute before it was too late. 

And it was. They had to kill him along with the other coursers. 

In their time as companions, they thought he was enjoyable to be with. He looked like he could be saved, but...yeah.

They made him a grave in the Institute’s remains.

Aaaaaaaaand, that’s all!! Gosh, that was loooong!! Can you see I was really eager to talk about Nick and Kate’s relationship? Yeah, that shit is long.

Uhm, hi! Hope you guys are doing ok. Are you guys good there? Please make sure to not strain yourselves! I was hoping to be anonymous for this as well. May I have a matchup for JJBA, One Punch Man (if it’s available for matchup), and A3 (if available for matchup as well)?? So.. Where to start? I’m quite short, around 147cm tall, and look years younger than my real age as to what the people claim to be. I always end up being mistaken as years younger than my real age. I don’t really believe in zodiac signs, but if it helps you guys easier for the matchup, I’m a Cancer.

I like my shirts, jackets, and coats oversized. I have black hair that reaches the bottom of my shoulder blades. Here’s irrelevant info, my hair looks normal, but I have these ringlet thingies under my hair and it shows if I wear it up in a pony-tail. My hair’s always a mess, even if I brush it or not. I also wear glasses that show black-colored eyes, I prefer my glasses if they’re thick-frames.

I listen to music too, if I’m ever in a particular mood (as an example, sadness) I search for songs that relate to my current mood and sing along. I also dance along, occasionally. I like to act as well, albeit I couldn’t afford to because my parents have a particular job in mind for me, something that I’ll really feel pressure on. My taste in music varies from rock to jazz, to classical, to pop.

I have this boyish aura that makes some strangers think I’m a tomboy person? But once you get to know me thoroughly, I actually have an interest in trying girly styles like pleated mini skirts and all that jazz. However, I stick to my oversized shirts and jackets style since I feel like girly style doesn’t suit me.

I also draw— I’m ok at it, not that good but not that bad— and daydream of surreal things, and listening to music (especially to music that channels like HQSounds upload) gives my imagination a boost. As an addition, I read. I read novels, I also play games, namely rpg games, rhythm games and racing games.

With my closest friends, I really show my true self— meme-loving, disaster who also thinks of questionable life choices, pineapple pizza stan, can be sassy and sarcastic, and a shoulder to cry on, definitely dirty-minded that you could see me wiggling my eyebrows at every single thing that you do— with my friends? I show a little about myself— meme-loving fangirl— with strangers and acquaintances? I’m polite as long as they return the politeness, but once someone decides to talk trash to my friends, I won’t hesitate to step in and give them my full-blown sassy, snarky and sarcastic self. Here’s a lil something, if I have to do something like explaining a presentation or monologuing apart from Shakespeare, I go in with confidence, but at the end of the performance, I tremble like a leaf.

Despite those sides, I always value something in every relationship, and that’s respect. Having a fair share of friendship issues, I’ve learned how to confront them but in the most civil way. I try to be open-minded, if you want affection, I’m available for a big hug and cuddle. I also tend to be wary of strangers and acquaintances. Giving vague, cryptic, or even no answers if they ask for any personal information like what country I live in and such. I’d claim I’m fairly wise with experiences, not all-knowing wise, but just a little wise. I’m the type to lay back and watch from the crowd. Not a popular gal, although you could say I’m a bit envious of the popular. I tend to be aloof around strangers and acquaintances, even family. But it’s another story for friends.

I take no sides if there’s an argument. I’m that type of person. I listen to each side of the story and try to come up with ways to end the conflict. I’m also physically weak since I’ve spent 60% of my childhood bed ridden or in the hospital. I have a weak immune system and a very weak pair of lungs. I can be very cunning and sneaky. A Slytherin kind of girl.

Chaotic yet lovable, Okuyasu is the guy for you! Despite his lack of awareness and sense of IQ he’ll be the absolute lovable and supportive boyfriend~! It goes without saying that he’ll show immense interest in what you like and will actively try his best to not only educate himself in your hobbies and passions, but participate as well! Despite his brash and aggressive exterior, Bad is not only protective of you, but a huge softie who becomes pliable mold in your awaiting hands. He lives for your sarcastic and witty comments and will undoubtedly hype you up whilst giving a smug ass smirk as you drop a full blown sassy snarky comment to someone who most definitely deserves it. Of course following this, he’ll just add in his own to amplify your point. 

He won’t outright admit it, but he enjoys the little moments of spending time with you whilst cuddling as you play your games. You’ll come to notice that despite his rough personality he is rather observant and diligent in not only remembering what you enjoy, but actively finding items you happen to mention to like in passing when he’s out and about.

I choose Nanao Taichi as your A3! boyfriend! First, for appearances and style, I feel as though Nanao would love how you look and the way you style yourself! For one thing, he will love that you are quite short, only because he is a pretty short person himself, he’ll think it will be easier to give you kisses and be affectionate! And honestly? I see Nanao always playing with those little ringlets that you have whenever he is bored, and whenever you don’t have you glasses on, he will play with them when you don’t want him to be playing with your hair! As for your style, he will love that you have an expansive sense of style when it comes to fashion! Like with your oversized coats and shirts, and then you rockin a cute skirt? Oh yeah. he would definitely like that kind of style, sense it kind of resembles his own style, minus the skirt lolol.

He will definitely appreciate that you love music, because I feel that he also has an big sense of music too! and the fact that you draw and read and play games! Carisi-centric thoughts on Ep 19x03

Yet another solid episode! This season is going to be a winner. Also, THE BARISI CORNER IS OFFICIALLY BACK :D

But first:

Overall Thoughts

OK, this wasn’t much to write home about, but it was more than serviceable. All three actresses were very good so they kept me engaged, the case was pleasantly twisty but not convoluted, Sonny had significant input as a lawyer (and I loved how Liv was all “we’ll follow Carisi’s suggestion!”) and Barba delivered a heated and eloquent closing argument. I enjoyed it.

Squad Thoughts

More sharing of personal information! I swear, Sonny and Fin have talked to each other more in these last two episodes than they did in the previous 3 2 seasons! And they didn’t need some random case-related segue, either. This week, they were just driving to a crime scene, and they were shooting the breeze on the way there. You know, like normal colleagues do. Like real people do. Not cardboard cutouts. Something small like that, something as silly as stealing candy as a little boy, it can breathe life into a scene which would otherwise be mundane.

The thing is, even when an episode is not as exciting, it’s still worth watching just to see our characters interacting and being friends. That’s what SVU seemed to have forgotten, and it’s also the key to making a watchable procedural. Let’s face it, all the cases have been done before (often by SVU itself, because it’s been on for a hundred years), but the team interactions can )and should) be enough to maintain the viewers’ interest. This season, it’s clear the team dynamics are being cultivated, instead of being ignored, and that makes me happy.

The Barisi Corner

WE'RE BACK.

Just like I hoped, it's like S18 never happened. We're back to the S17 Barisi dynamic of friendly teasing and inside jokes. In the deleted scene from the premiere, we got the classic "booyah, Fordham law" type of interaction, except in its advanced S17 form. Where in S16 Barba would be biting with his remarks, in S17 and in the 19x01 deleted scene he was just making a joke for the sake of a joke, because that's what they do. Sonny tries to impress Barba, Barba is totally impressed, and then he makes a joke to pretend he's not actually appreciative of Sonny's input.

In this episode, we got an even more advanced interaction. We got Sonny making a smart legal observation not just to impress Barba, but because he wanted to contribute to the case. And, just like in S17, Barba was impressed, and then he used a joke not to diss Sonny, but to praise him.

See, there are two kinds of humorous Barisi interactions.

There's "Sassy Sonny Tries to Impress Barba" which comes complete with Sonny's dimples, and Sonny's smirks, and Sonny's cocky remarks like, "Oh, Rafael, are you mad you didn't think about it first?" This type of Barisi interaction always ends with a Barba side-eye and a snarky comeback. When Barba knows that Sonny is flaunting, he's always quick to shut it down. That's the joke. Sonny starts blathering on about a hypothetical argument, just to show off his legal skillz, and Barba is amused, but he also acknowledges the alterior motive, i.e. Sonny's desire to get Barba's approval.

But then there's "Dedicated Sonny Tries to Crack the Case" which comes with Sonny's frown and Sonny's desire to get justice, and Sonny's casual use of legal terminology like "obfuscated." This type of Barisi interaction always ends with Barba subtly praising Sonny, using a joke to cover up a genuine compliment. When Barba knows that Sonny is trying to be helpful, he's always quick to encourage it. That's Barba's favorite thing. Seeing Sonny creatively solving a legal problem with no ulterior motive. Sure, their games are fun, and they've been fun for 3 2 seasons now, but at the end of the day they're both trying to get justice, and Barba loves it when Sonny focuses on their work.

That's the thing. Both Sonny and Barba have evolved. Sonny used to thirst for Barba's approval, early on, in S16, but soon after that he found his confidence, and his footing, and his place on the team. He still tries to show off for Barba, because it's fun, but that's no longer his main motivator when he speaks legalese. Sonny isn't a law student looking to get that A, he's a lawyer looking to get that D. And his actions and words have come to reflect that. Now he doesn't just state the obvious as Barba jokes "save it for night school." Now, Sonny has original ideas which can actually help SVU.

And Barba, who treated Sonny so condescendingly at first, Barba has come to see the change in Sonny as well. The humorous element of their interactions persists, because Barba is a snarky bastard, but now those same interactions are loaded with respect. With friendship. With flirtation. Barba is no longer dismissive of Sonny, and hasn't been for a long while. Barba sees Sonny as a useful presence in the squad, with legal knowledge the other cops don't possess, and it's clear he welcomes Sonny’s observations. It’s right there in his smile smirk. Barba is willing to listen, and he’s even willing to entertain the notion that Sonny just might think of something he didn't, which is beautiful to see :')

Barisi Hopes

Now all I want is that other type of S17 interaction, the quiet support. Sonny always supported Barba in tougher moments, like the death threats (what death threats lol?), or a trial gone wrong, but Barba also supported Sonny, especially during that Catholic Church case, as we all remember. I'm loving the new showrunner's tendency to use humor to display the bonds between our characters, it's just the perfect thing to balance out the grim nature of the cases, but I'd love to see some more muted, more emotional moments between them (between all of them, but Barba/Carisi especially, lol). We have an entire season ahead, so there's still plenty of time. I'll be waiting.

For now, I'm just happy the classic Barisi dynamic is back.

I've said it time and time again, and I don't even mean romantically (that's what fic is for). Those two characters, Barba and Carisi, they have a dynamic that's gold. Clashing personalities (Sonny is dorkier, Barba is more sarcastic), contrasting temperaments (Sonny is sunnier, Barba is a little more bitter), common interests (the law), a reluctant mentor-mentee relationship (which has evolved now that the student is no longer a student, though he's far from being a master), a constant willingness to joke back-and-forth (which keeps building up their relationship and strengthens their bond), fundamental differences which breed a potential for unexpectedly emotional moments ("I admire your...", because Sonny is an openly affectionate person, and Barba and his wide eyes tend to shy away from affection), it's all there.

Good writing, plus a willingness to explore that bond, plus the natural ease Peter and Raul have with each other as actors, plus Sonny’s sweetness and Barba’s sass = television gold. And Barisi gold :’)

Yummy Thoughts

Barba was flirting. End of story. Textbook “there is no heterosexual explanation for this.” And I’m grateful.

Barba Thoughts

I’ve always said it, I prefer seeing “shrewd legal mind” Barba instead of “slave to his emotions” Barba, but the latter sure is fun to watch. That closing was intense, and you could see that Raul really dug his teeth into those lines.  I mean, damn. It’s not every week that he gets to really show off, with more than an eyebrow raise or a smirk, but when he does, wow.  I was just thinking, they rarely let Raul have a legitimate monologue, even though he’s a lawyer and theoretically we could be watching his opening and/or closing arguments every week. This episode tells me that the writers might be saving those moments, and using them sparingly, so they’ll have more of an impact. And I think they’re right.

That said, I wonder if we’ll be seeing a focus on Barba’s more emotional side, to better juxtapose him to the upcoming ADA, who’ll be more black-and-white and (I’m assuming) less emotional. If so, this was a smart way to start doing that. In this episode, we still saw how smart Barba was, but we also saw a passion we don’t often see from him. I’m assuming Barba and Peter Stone will clash on more than their positions, they’ll clash on philosophy, as well, and I hope this was an example of that. We have to see the “new” (but old) Barba, he has to be established first, under the new showrunner’s reign, and then we can be introduced to Stone, and see what they have in common and what they’ll never agree on.

Stray Thoughts

Just like I thought, last week's dramatic ending (and Sonny’s potential subsequent trauma) was not directly referenced. It may come up again in the future, but again, as I said in last week's post, this is classic Original L&O stuff, a self-contained dramatic episode which ends and is never mentioned again. L&O in its earlier seasons was much less serialized, and I think the new showrunner is bringing that back. I don't mind it.

Another thing I didn’t mind? Flirty Sonny using his masculine wiles to cozy up to that witness and get her to help. Now that’s how you use your assets :D

So Brooke Shields is the grandma? Wasn’t that what everyone guessed? I was trying to come up with other guesses because I actually believed them when they said “no one has guessed who she’ll play”. Oh well. That said, she looked amazing, and I’ve always liked her. It’ll be nice to have someone with a (seemingly) kinder demeanor fighting against Liv. Not a criminal or a lawyer, you know? We haven’t seen that before.

Jinhwan:  He’s a sweetheart who loves his girlfriend whole-heartedly. He isn’t afraid to be affectionate in public, even if it’s in places where he shouldn’t be showing affection at all. To him, you deserve the world and all of his heart. He’s a simple guy, but he likes to spoil you with all of his love. He would pull through in the roughest times and take care of you as much as he can. I see him as someone who would call you just because he missed hearing your voice. And he wouldn’t hide his emotions from you or let you forget how much he loves you. He’s so sappy and so sweet I cry

Yunhyung: I see him as a playful boyfriend. He really likes to be around you because he can just be himself. Sometimes he would tease you, maybe a little too much. Although he’s very playful, there are times when you need someone to help you stand up, and he’s there to hold you. He may crack a few jokes here and there, but he would still be your shoulder to cry on. And at the end of the day, you’re in his arms whispering sweet nothings to each other. He really loves you, and you can’t forget that. He also would share different types of lip balm with you but that’s a different story

Bobby/Jiwon: I also see Bobby as a very playful and extremely sweet boyfriend. He really likes you and is comfortable around you, and he’s not afraid to show it. Sometimes his shirtless-ness and his cute nicknames for you get you flustered, he’s totally weak for that shit. You’re his precious little ladybug, nothing can ever change that. But when things don’t go too well and you’re on the verge of exploding, he’s serious when he needs to be. He’s there as your shoulder to cry on and someone you can rely on or rant to. And he won’t hesitate to hold your hand and help you through those times when you just need to break down. And after your serious meltdown, he’s there with a carton of ice cream, offering cuddles and your favorite movie.  Ultimate boyfriend material FUCK ME UP

B.I/Hanbin: As a boyfriend, he has two personalities. HE’S NOT TWO FACED OK JUST HEAR ME OUT  For example, when out in public, he’s all grabbing your butt and being an extra loud but sweet boyfriend. But at home and in private, he’s an adorable sweetheart who would would hold you and let you know he loves you through little kisses and handholds and cuddles, all that good stuff. He would rather much show you love and affection in silence because he sees that as a much better way and the proper way to be a good boyfriend to you. He basically has two different sides to him, but both sides are always ready to hold your hand and let you know that they love you. At home or at the studio, he isn’t afraid to show the world, and show you, that you’re his. 

Donghyuk: He’s sweetheart boyfriend number 2! Like Jinhwan, he’s the boyfriend who shows you affection and love even at the hardest of times. He never gives up on his special girl, there’s no denying that. If he could give the world to you, he would do it in a heartbeat. In addition to being a sweetie pie, he’s the playful type as well. He teases you and calls you princess because it makes you weak, and he’ll even grab at your butt to get you more flustered. He’s never afraid to love you in public or in front of the boys. But there are times when you’re not your best, and he knows that. He’s not the best at comforting you 100%, but he would always try for you and cheer you up until he sees that beautiful smile of yours. I’m so weak for this man I’m so tired UGH

Junhoe: I see him as the “best friend” kind of boyfriend. Basically, he acts like your best friend and isn’t all that lovey dovey or affectionate. He’s a sassy guy, so he has that side of him where he likes to tease you. But he doesn’t like it when other people do it you. He knows people can take their teasing too far on you, and sometimes you would get hurt over it. He hates seeing you upset or hurt, it pains his heart. But he will always try his best to cheer you up and make you feel better and probably fight the person who made you upset because that’s his baby and no one hurts his baby OnO.  Although he’s your best friend, at the end of the day he’s still your boyfriend. He’s still the sweetheart who would hold you and take care of you because you’re his sweet little darling who he loves so much. He’s secretly a sap tho he just doesn’t like to show it 

Chanwoo: Since he’s new to relationships, I see him as an awkward boyfriend. He’s new to the world of dating so give him a break. Although he’s already dating you, he still sees you as his crush. He gets those butterflies in his stomach every time you smile at him and it gets him so shy and nervous. Heck, he’s even sweating at just holding your hand. Cuddling with him during a movie gets a bit difficult though. He’s pretty nervous like, what if I’m too sweaty? what if I’m holding them too tight? this isn’t going to end well… poor baby, he just loves you so much I cry.  But as you turn to look at him, he can feel your heartbeat. It’s just as fast as his. Yes, he gets nervous when he looks at you. Yes, he gets shy when you call him baby. He still can’t believe that you’re his. Even if he’s still a little awkward, he still cherishes you. You’re his sweet little angel, and nothing can change that. It’ll take a little time for him to get comfortable with you, but don’t ever doubt for a second that he loves you so much. he’s such a tol cutie just smother him with love please

ahhh thank you so much ;;; i have a tendency to angst so i suppose being good at that works in my favour haha.

wow…ok. under a cut bc i rambled A LOT im sorry. i basically got an excuse to cry about how much i love these two.

kibum: i love how he’s open about how he struggled to make sense of his own insecurities and then decided to become someone /he/ wanted to be as opposed to what he thinks maybe society wanted to be. i love how passionate he is in all the work he does and how hard he works to achieve that. i love his multifaceted interests and his zest towards finding so many things to do in life. i love how sociable he is. i sometimes pick these things to create the character. like, he’s such a social butterfly, is it possible his relationships are too easily broken and he moves on to someone else? or does his passion for work extend to his passion for people? and how does that affect his possible romantic relationships? or do his insecurities ever affect the way he deals with things? so i write him to understand that but also…use it to form a character.

jjong: there’s a divide in fandom about how to portray jjong. is he soft and cute and lovable? or is he this cocky jackass? i think he’s both, depending on who he’s with and what he wants from you. i like this duality. so i try to balance out the jjong characters in my fic, make him both soft and hard, bc i think he can be and is both. he’s a sensitive pianist /and/ an overconfident flirt, a gentle son but a wild lover. i think he’s also really attuned to human emotion and maybe too concerned sometimes of people’s impressions of him so that inspires me too.

jongkey in general…makes me think of masks and not being who ppl think you are. like kibum the sassy one who carries so many insecurities, or jjong who strips on stage and struts around but cries at the drop of a hat. i like that and it helps me to form characters.

and oh jongkey together… i love the way they look at each other, really soft and affectionate, i love the way they make fun of each other, i love how happy they seem to make each other, how they always end up being the crying duo, how they flirt on ig, how they somehow seem to have these little inside jokes sometimes (petit and ‘kibummie again’ song) and basically how they seem to really enjoy each other.

i try to use some of that interactions and characterisation to fuel the writing. but depending on the fic and stuff it often goes on feel, does this character /feel/ like jjong to me, does it /feel/ like kibum? it’s not overly conscious bc i think it also needs to fit into the storyline. but yeah the way i see them probably affects the way they are written.

I don’t know if I have made the right decision, it was so difficult to make. I have had to block the person that I have really strong feelings for from all social media. I don’t know if I did the right thing but there was no point in me continuing to go back to him. I have tried so hard to make things how they were, but he wouldn’t budge. He had lost all feelings for me. I don’t understand how you can just stop having feelings for someone so quickly. How does it happen? How can they do that? The last time he came to my house, my head was rest on his lap and he told me I was a very special girl. He bought me a tiny succulent and I had to stop myself from crying. How can the very next day his feelings of me change all together? He had no right to lead me on like that. I now realise that everything that was said between us was a lie. I told him about how damaged I was, how I have been hurt, I was telling him from the start. I remember once I told him men use me for an experience, as a sexual object and he sent me a message that night saying I was so much more than just an experience and I remembered that because it was such a nice message to receive from the person I like, now I remember it as the biggest lie anyone has ever told me in order to fuck me.

I used to tell him he was my dream man, he was perfect, he was smart, handsome and funny. I said I will never meet anyone like him again, he said he would never meet anyone like me again either. If someone really believes that how can they just let someone go? How can your feelings change so suddenly? Now I look back and I think what made him so special? He never really knew or cared about my mental health, he never really asked. When I told him I needed reassurance from him sometimes he told me he can’t fix my problems. I have never asked another person to fix my problems, I will never rely on a man to help “fix” my mental health although I do ask for understanding and empathy. It’s not difficult to message someone the next day, when I had told him this is when my anxiety is the worst, and just tell me everything is ok. Just ask how I am, just be normal. Apparently, this was asking for too much because he never did it. How can I think someone who knows about my anxiety and ignores my simple request as perfect? A man who doesn’t give a fuck about me and my suffering? Sounds like literally every other fucking bloke I know.

I went into this knowing that he was in an open relationship and knowing that I would be the one getting fucked over. I said to my friend that at the end of this I’ll walk away with nothing except knowing that I was used as a fetish and knowing that I’m not likable by other women and they’ll walk away with a rekindled relationship, it’s exactly what happened. I remember speaking to him about how he will never care about me because he already has someone to care about and he said he doesn’t rank people in that way. Months later, he is saying there are priorities before me, and he wonders why I get upset at his change in behaviour.  He started saying he wasn’t open about his feelings and he is not that type of person. He had always been open about his feelings though before he started distancing himself, it was an excuse to not be honest with me. I see him be honest about his feelings al the time on social media when talking about his girlfriend. I’m also aware that people express themselves differently, so I hoped he would find another way to show me he cares, but he never did.

I remember before the first time we met and he said he felt like he was meeting with the hottest girl in school. Now he doesn’t even think about me. I can feel his relief in knowing that I have left his life and that he can continue as everything was being able to have had his experience. I asked him once what his favourite memory of ours was, he didn’t answer. What’s a few months to him with someone when he already has someone else? It doesn’t matter to him. It breaks my heart knowing he won’t care that I’m gone. I think about him all the time. Recently we were talking and I thought the conversation was sweet, I thought we were being affectionate with each other. How could I be so delusional? He eventually said “can I say something cute?” and I was so excited in my head to hear him say something sweet to me and show me he cares, but he just made the conversation sexual. I was so disappointed and heartbroken. How can I be so delusional that something would happen to me? My standards are so low. I just wanted to hear something nice from him and he set it up as if he was going to, only to sexualise the conversation. Now I realise that whenever I was talking about something that wasn’t sex he was just waiting to bring it up and finding any opportunity to do so. Just like every other man.

I did everything he asked me to do, be friends with his girlfriend, follow her, meet her. I wanted to meet her and I wanted to make it work. While I joke about taking her boyfriend, I have zero interest in this. I always felt sorry for her and I still do. I have zero interest in competing with another woman for a man. Then she blocked me, I wonder if he ever stood up for me at all. I highly doubt this. I highly doubt he ever said anything positive about me to her. I can just imagine him trying to make her feel better and telling her that I’m nothing to him, just sex. Which was true. How could I be so delusional? When he uninvited me from his birthday, I was so heart broken. I felt so sad that he could just do that because it proved he didn’t want it to work anymore. He blamed me for trying to “break up with him” but nothing about his girlfriend just deleting me? I also recognise how petty it all sounds. It IS petty, but it was all so hurtful when I was really trying to do the right thing by both of them. My actions have always been to protect him in his relationship, I didn’t want them to fight and I often thought about how I should just leave and let them be happy together. He said I was saying these things for a reaction. She watches stories on my Instagram, she’s one of the first to watch them each time. It makes me so angry that she can block me and make her account private, but continues to stalk me from her mediocre art account. I never said anything to him about her doing that even though I make myself extremely vulnerable and it’s fucking uncomfortable. I didn’t want to cause tension. Again, I know it’s all so petty. It’s all the small things that build up that hurt me.

I wonder if he remembers or cares about any of the conversations we had? I can only assume he doesn’t since he never remembered anything I told him. He never remembered my friends names, even though I spoke about them all the time and he knew how important they were to me. I was speaking to my friend about blocking him, we spoke about what a dream it would be for him to call me once I had done it and express regret and want me back, I told her he has never expressed regret or wanted me back. I can’t let myself become delusional again by filling my head with daydreams based on romantic comedies. Those types of things don’t happen to me. I really thought it was different with him but it turned out to be just the same.

I just hate that all along I was nothing to him. Hours and hours of conversation every day, talking on the phone every night, the way we fucked, all the things we had planned, everything I wanted to give him emotionally and sexually, and it means nothing to him. Just relief to know I’m gone. I think about when we first met in person and I felt so close to him, I really felt it was something special. I loved how he would pushed me into the alley and kissed me. His hands were all over me and I loved how he would do that. Whenever we would see each other after that he would grab me and we would be all over each other. All the sex we spoke about and the way we would do it, how we did it, has now all just become degrading to me. Not in the sexual way either, I wanted him to say and do certain things because I thought there was feeling there, I thought I could trust him to say those things and not mean it. Now it’s just plain degrading, it makes me sad. I see his porn tumblr and I feel ashamed that I’m essentially going to be replaced with porn and that is fine to him. I was just a fetish. It was my biggest fear and yet It happened again. I’m always the stepping stone, the fill in, the experience, and this is what I was to him and his relationship. I think even then I’m giving myself to much credit in his eyes, I think I was just available at the time and he had his dick in his hands.

My housemate thinks that if I’m even thinking that he wouldn’t care that I’ve blocked him it’s even more reason to do so, because generally people care when that happens and they try and get the other person back, and I think that is true. The fact I even think he won’t care is enough to just do it but I worry it’s the wrong thing to do and I should keep waiting for him. But it’s been almost a week now after he last upset me and he still hasn’t tried to contact me. On Friday, I felt we had a really intense conversation about fucking that lasted hours, I felt all my feelings for him rush back and I was convinced he felt the same way. Again, I was delusional. When I was upset he couldn’t see me, he told me I was being sassy. I can’t even begin to express how offensive it is to reduce a woman’s pain or anger to “sassiness.” The next day I was happy to watch Richmond win. I received texts from literally fucking everyone, people coming out of nowhere to say THIS IS AMAZING! He continued to ignore me. How can you ignore someone when something that makes them so happy has just happened? Another sign he doesn’t care about me.

I’m devastated, I’m so sad thinking about how he won’t care. I’m sad thinking that we won’t be able to do anything we spoke about, I’m sad that a connection never really existed. I worry I’m making the wrong decision but I don’t have any other choice. If you like someone and care for someone, you let them know, you want to work on your problems, he doesn’t want to do that with me.
