content: fluff, fairly new relationship, cyno is a bit awkward with a relationship, reader is an akademiya scholar

by the time you had first spoken words even remotely along the lines of “i like you,” the two of you had already had time to ponder the distance that you’d be forced to succumb to. cyno - under the title of the general mahamatra - could knowingly be away for days, perhaps even weeks at a time and you, a scholar constantly bound to the house of daena, rotting in the smell of old tomes.

contrary to this, you both still give it a go. why not? there are worse situations to date in - it isn’t as if cyno’s office isn’t in the akademiya, the place you so happen to both work at. cyno also decides that whilst it’s not the best idea in the world, he could slack work. it wouldn’t be the first time he’s disappeared off the radar, after all.

so when you’re deep within the apam woods, camping under tall, lush trees covered in mushroom growths and other numerous flora, cyno pays a visit to his new dearest partner; the one he’ll never admit that he can’t seem to be apart from for too long.

a heavy drizzle interrupts your attempt at showing your boyfriend around the area you are surveying, huddling you up under your shelter instead. cyno is not used to these temperatures entirely, despite them still being humid. he glances at you, longing for just one touch - one lingering touch of your skin even if for a brief time.

“my hands are cold.” the general states suddenly into the minorly awkward air the two of you had settled into. this relationship is still fresh, figuring out boundaries and how much is too much.

“is that a pickup line?” you respond teasingly, a smile gracing your lips as you doubt your boyfriend’s intentions. he could be serious for all you know but knowing cyno, there is a heavy possibility that he’s setting up a joke - or your first assumption, a pickup line.

“no-” you give him a skeptical look as he begins to defend himself, “hey don’t give me that look - it’s genuinely cold.”

cyno is without a doubt a little offended, yet it is only because you think he’d start a pickup line with something as dreadful as that sentence. did you have no faith in his comedic - or romantic, in this case - genius?

“excuses, excuses.” you laugh, reaching over to grab gently at your boyfriend’s lanky hand. you lace your fingers together and within seconds his hand has enveloped yours in a tight, warm embrace. something clicks in your mind, cyno had simply wanted an excuse to hold your hand.

cyno notes the look of realisation that washes across your face, albeit a little flustered as he clears his throat, “alright, you caught me.”

How long ago did this tournament start?

Well the short answer is "almost a year now" for the long answer(s) I have to dust off some ancient tomes.

On March 13 2023 I made the intro post for this blog, it was back when blogs dedicated to poll tournaments were still finding their footing. Common practices either weren't a thing, or I just didn't see them. Namely, I didn't even consider using a google form for submissions. I had people submit through the REBLOGS. If you think that sounds like a great idea to gain traction, it is. I don't think I would have gotten 2000+ submissions without doing it this way. But if you dear reader ever run a poll blog DO NOT DO THIS! Sorting through that much data like that was AWFUL.

All of this was to say that it took a whole month for me to gather all those submissions and make the bracket. Honestly I definitely should have taken a bit more time on it, but April 13th was originally going to be the day submissions closed (before it was shortened to 5 days) and apparently that's a funny Homestuck date so I wanted to keep it a part of the blog in some form.

After that I spend about a week just queuing polls (which at the time I did 16 of per day. Big mistake.) And on the 21 of April, 2023 the bracket started in earnest. Thank you for listening to my tale.
