Todd Snider at Stuart’s Opera House, Nelsonville, Ohio, Nov. 10, 2022
From the moment Todd Snider walked on stage, it was clear it was going to be a good night.
Snider was all smiles. Stuart’s Opera House was sold out. And Thursday, Nov. 10 in Nelsonville, Ohio, felt like Saturday night in the big city.
And for Snider - who at one point asked what night it was - perhaps it was.
Opening with “The Get Together,” which then segued into “Is This Thing Working?,” Snider revealed his tack for this night early on.
The songs were to be focused. The stories were to be plentiful and hilarious. And the myriad shouted requests were to be granted.
“I know all that shit,” Snider said through a Cheshire grin before playing all that shit.
Thus followed songs with spelling (“Beer Run”); songs with math (“Statistician’s Blues”); comical observations (“Doublewide Blues”); romantic ballads (“All My Life”); robust rockers (“Ballad of the Devil’s Backbone Tavern”); and train songs (“Play a Train Song” -> “Georgia on a Fast Train” -> “Train Song”).
The audience lustily sung along, cheered every harmonica solo and stomped their feet on Stuart’s 140-year-old floorboards to add warm percussion to Snider’s acoustic guitar. And a community was born, where the dividing line between entertainer and entertained is erased and everyone plays a role in making a good time for everyone else.
Snider’s beige button-down shirt was drenched in sweat when the stellar, 100-minute wrapped after 20 songs and five stories. And no wonder. The self-described American Troubadour and American treasure (Sound Bites’ words) worked hard to convey all that fun - and funny.
When Snider’s in the frame of mind he brought to Nelsonville, he’s as side-splitting as any working comedian. He took his fellow travelers back to early tours with disastrous shows before line-dancing Shania Twain and Garth Brooks fans and to a hotel bar in Dayton where a 19-year-old Lil Wayne threw money around, got the cops involved and dubbed Snider “Rolling Paper.”
“I still think about that,” he said with a chuckle.
And the humor extended to songs like the rarely performed “Doll Face,” in which a newspaper in a landfill recounts to a dismembered toy its past glories as a tree.
Snider’s obvious joy might have gone back to the opening set by Tommy Prine, son of John, mentor of Todd.
Snider said the 45-minute set, which included songs from Prine’s forthcoming-in-2023 debut, newer originals and Dad’s “Far From Me” left him choked up. The audience warmly received him and the humble Prine was grateful for the support.

When I'm standing by water
It gets harder and harder
It's why I get sad when there's ships in the harbor
'Cause they must be leaving soon, as they should
Takes time to know when you're wrong
Takes even longer to put it all in a song

Hayley posted about seeing Tommy Prine last night. He was playing at that porter’s call fundraiser paramore played at last year. And they honored Taylor’s dad this year 🥺 now how do Hayley/Tayley go to an event like that and not get photographed?? Still very sweet.

REVIEW: Will Kimbrough “For the Life of Me”
REVIEW: Will Kimbrough “For the Life of Me” @will_kimbrough @americanahighways #ericthom #newmusic2024 #americanamusic #forthelifeofme
Will Kimbrough – For the Life of Me (Daphne Records) Think of Will Kimbrough as the Swiss Army Knife of roots music. He’s a great writer, exceptional singer, phenomenal guitarist and an in-demand producer and arranger. But if you needed a good starting point, know that no less than John Prine thought enough of this young songwriter (and his band with pal Tommy Womack, The Bis-Quits) back in ’93…

THE MEMORIAL DAY PLAYLIST
Because I have a platform for it with this blog, and because the blog focuses primarily on music, I wanted to do something for Memorial Day. I grew up in the shadow of the Vietnam War. I never served. I had a draft card, and a lottery number, but the government ended the draft just months before I would’ve been called. My number was a low one, so it’s likely I’d have been drafted, and I would’ve served rather than seek a deferment. The war ended soon after.
Though I never served, that war compromised the futures of every member of my generation. The money that might’ve been spent at home was wasted in a futile war we never had any chance of winning. It undermined our faith in the military, and in our government and elected officials. The veterans who survived that war were, at best, ignored and forgotten, and, at worst, betrayed, mistreated, and robbed of the dignity of having served their country in what they believed was a noble cause. Even today, nearly 50 years after that war ended, the Vietnam Veteran is the least recognized, and the least celebrated of any group of soldiers who served in any war in this nation’s history. There were 58,220 men and women soldiers who died in that war. The list of casualties, however, military and civilian, is incalculable.
So, I get angry every Memorial Day when I see the flags wave, and the veterans of all the other wars honored, yet again, for their service while those who served in Vietnam are shoved aside, or ignored altogether. I wanted to bring that fact to light in this space by compiling a Memorial Day Playlist of the songs that impacted my thinking about Vietnam, The Cold War, and about all wars. The list was getting so long that I finally had to stop. But on Memorial Day, if you need a reminder that the day is not for celebration, but for grief, you have only to listen to these songs, and remember one thing: if your government tells you that fighting a war is necessary, it is your duty as a citizen, and a patriot to question authority. If there is another way, questioning authority is the only way a war might be avoided. If, however, a war becomes necessary, and all other avenues have been exhausted, then fight knowing that dying is the ultimate price of freedom, and that never, ever is war a cause for celebration.

Tommy Prine—John Prine’s son—performing “Ships in the Harbor”, a song from his upcoming album. _________________________ Ships in the Harbor Songwriter: Tommy Prine
It must be the morning again The sun through the window felt good on my skin So it must be leaving soon As it should
And I saw the Blue Bird again She pointed it out in the yard on our fence So it must be leaving soon As it should
When I’m standing by water It gets harder and harder It’s why I get sad when there’s ships in the harbor Cause they must be leaving soon, as they should
I got to see an old friend Way laughed and stay up till it came to an end Cause he must be leaving soon As we do
I tend to get lost in the stars I waste every night wondering where we all are And how we most be leaving soon As we should
When I’m standing by water It gets harder and harder It’s why I get sad when there’s ships in the harbor Cause they must be leaving soon, as they should
It takes time to know when you’re wrong It takes even longer to put it all in a song And I wish it was easy to Like he did
When I’m by peaceful waters It gets harder and harder I’d do anything just to talk to my father But I guess he was leaving soon As we do Yeah I guess he was passing through And I am too
