I was going to read Danmachi 12 next but I realised that I needed a short break from the action so it’s time for melodrama. It’s been over a year and a half since I read the first 11 volumes in this series and it finally went on sale at BookWalker so I’m going to finish it. Some refreshers on my feelings about this series as I try to recall them: it’s interesting but definitely becomes melodramatic a lot of the time; I love Utaha; I love Katou’s and Eriri’s relationship; I really liked Katou for most of the series but I remember feeling that she became boring in volume 11 when she was becoming more of the heroine that Tomoya wanted her to be instead of the interesting character she was at the start of the series. Plus, it just kind of annoys me that Tomoya succeded in turning Katou into the girl of his dreams. Thing is, I can’t remember if this is what actually happened or if it’s just what it felt like to me at the time and I’m not going to reread the first 11 volumes to find out so I’m going to have to trust old me’s feelings on it for the time being.

Anyway, this volume starts with the revelation that Akane Kousaka has been hospitalised so Tomoya goes to see her. With Akane out and the deadline coming up, he ends up volunteering to help with the game’s completion, to Katou’s sadness.

I think part of it is that it’s been so long since I read volume 11 but I struggled to get into this volume. So much of it fell flat and was boring to me. It doesn’t help that, despite what the cover promises, Katou and Eriri only interact once in this volume and I’m just not interested in the romance between Katou and Tomoya and I’m not invested in the completion of the game at this point either. It’s hard to say whether I would be feeling this way if I hadn’t taken such a long break between volumes but I just wasn’t invested in this volume at all. I did like some of the scenes with Eriri and Utaha though so at least there’s that.

Next in the series is the third Girls’ Side volume which I’ll read soon.

Match Day 5 of the 2019 International Saimoe League Eliminations Period, Election Day 2019 has concluded. Violet Evergarden, in just her first year of participating in the ISML, has been promoted to Saimoe Prime Minister after defeating Rin Tohsaka 13329-13156 to win the Heavenly Tiara and be elected as the 18th Saimoe Prime Minister as recognized by the Bedlam on Baltic Avenue. Rimuru Tempest will serve as her deputy after defeating Sakuta Azusagawa 12834-12176. Kaguya Shinomiya was elected Speaker of the Saimoe Diet after bouncing Ishtar 13977-11193.

Reina Kousaka was named Divine Circlet Champion after defeating Kumiko Oumae 12371-12093, while Mikaela Hyakuya scored the Upset of the Round, prevailing over Ryuunosuke Akasaka 11004-10423 to win the ISML Divine Crown.

]Mai Sakurajima finished third place in the Female Division after defeating Mashiro Shiina 12160-12540 while Rikka Takanashi was fifth after grounding Emilia 14057-12336. In the first four-way race, Kurumi Tokisaki (12741) and Yukino Yukinoshita (100533.5) got through. In the six-way race, Kamui Kanna (10349) was first, beating Kurisu Makise (9344). Shouko Nishimiya was third (7383), Azuna Yuuki (6163) was fourth, Schwi Dola (4889) was fifth and Shiro (4148) was sixth. In the second four-way race, Mio Akiyama was first with 13623 votes, beating out Takagi (12326), Iroha Isshiki (11588) and Chino Kafuyu (10819).

Archer was third in the Male Division race, beating Tomoya Okazaki 11729-11371. Levi was fifth with a 11244-11001 win over Riku Dola. In the first four-way race, Yuuta Togashi (96106.9) and Taki Tachibana (79192.3) were in the green. Willem Kmetsch defeated Shirou Emiya in the six-way race, 8277-7830. Kiyotaka Ayanokouji was third (6051), Saitama (5052) was fourth, Kiritsugu Emiya (4400) was fifth and Kazuma Satou (3880) was last. In the second four-way race, Kyon was was first with 11771 votes, Lancer was second (10417), Nagisa Shiota was third (10407) and Subaru Natsuki (10203) was last in a close encounter.

Finally, a number of exhibitions took place. Lelouch Lamperouge and C.C. defeated Kamina and Yoko Littner 15567-8130, Astolfo pounded Hideri Kanzaki (11387-9800), Chiyo Sakura eased past Aoba Suzukaze 12428-10116, Kokoa Hoto defeated Ristarte 11298-10765, Haruhi Suzumiya leveled Suigintou 13447-9650, Hina Amano defeated Chika Fujiwara 11767-11573 and Reines El-Melloi Archisorte won the closesrt race of the round, a 11090-11033 thriller over Aqua.

Wrapping up exhibition action, Mafuyu Kirisu defeated Yotsuba Nakano 11528-11196, Shinobu Kochou whipped past Adele von Ascham 11397-10940, Itsuki Nakano thumped Hestia 12166-10365, Shinobu Oshino barreled past Laffey 11215-10963, Momo Chiyoda defeated Raphtalia 11384-10563 and Hitagi Senjougahara eased past Megumi Tadokoro 11518-10912.

I was going to make a top five list, but I decided not to because he’s one of the most prolific voice actors out there where he gets a ton of roles every season. Plus, I haven’t watched a lot of the following roles. I don’t think I’m qualified to make his list until I watch Clannad. I did tend to keep my favourites towards the end though. 

Heck, I’m not tagging all these anime. I didn’t even touch on video games/visual novels obviously, but some of these roles are both anime and visual novels. And yes, I’m including roles with shady “relationships” (ex. Oreimo has incest if you didn’t know... it’s not like that was in the description or anything). I’ll be providing commentary anyway.

This is probably his most iconic role. Whether he likes it or not, Mashima and Nakahara already like Gruvia.

This scene (actually, this anime) made me laugh so hard. It’s one of my top picks for “anime that need a season two”

Tomoya then recruits Megumi to star as the “heroine” (the main character’s love interest) of his game, thus forming the development team “Blessing Software”, in which the three most renowned students in the school (Tomoya, Eriri, and Utaha) work on one of the least noticeable (Megumi). The series follows their adventures in developing the game and their plans to sell it at the Comiket convention, as well as the emotional entanglements among the team.

Saekano 2 – 09

After the high spirits attained by watching Tomoya and Megumi finally reconcile last week, the angst and despair prevalent in this latest installment of Saekano is presents a stark contrast. It’s a place we know the show is as comfortable with as the goofier comedy, and it’s fairly apparent by the end of the episode that whatever happens, things won’t be the same…or at least they shouldn’t easily revert back there.

After meeting Utaha after her graduation and presenting his proposal, which she reads and gives high marks, Tomoya asks if she’ll be on board for the new game, and Utaha says she can’t. She can’t for precisely the concessions Tomoya offers to persuade her to do it: he will only ask her for as much as she can handle when she has the time.

Essentially, Utaha cannot work for a producer who won’t push her to make sacrifices and challenge herself. Because of Tomoya at its head, Blessing Software is no longer a place where Utaha can feel she’s being the best creative she can be. That realization was probably reached on her own in some form, but it was certainly helped by the meeting she had one month ago.

In that meeting, the famous, ultra-successful and popular Kousaka Akane, who offers to let Utaha write the story for the newest in a 20-year-old line of RPGs, Fields Chronicle. Not only that, Kousaka offered Eriri the job as character designer. In fact, she wanted Eriri more than Utaha. And Tomoya is just now hearing about this.

As Tomoya stews in despair and wonders if this is all really happening, we rewind one month. Utaha talks with Eriri about her slump, and about the same issues with Tomoya she brings up with him a month later.

Ever since her art from the winter villa, she hasn’t been able to draw anything as good, but takes comfort in knowing Tomoya will give her all the time she needs, and forgive and stick with her if she never draws anything again.

Utaha can relate – she once “lost herself to a guy” and it negatively affected her ability to be the best creative she could be, but Eriri won’t admit that’s what’s going on, even as she states Tomoya will never be the asshole producer-type he actually needs to be to get the most out of his creatives.

Then Utaha’s editor tells her about the meeting Kousaka wants with her, and Eriri comes along, not because she’ll be willing to hear anything Kousaka wants to say, but to try to stop Utaha from being drawn into Kousaka’s web and agreeing to the RPG project.

But while Eriri ostensibly came to provide a stronger front against the older, more experienced, and more successful (and therefore seductive) Kousaka, neither she nor Utaha come out of the meeting unscathed.

Kousaka may be drunk when they arrive, but she’s perfectly lucid in her no-nonsense approach. She’s makes it clear it’s Kashiwagi Eri she wants more than anything, and if Kasumi Utako can’t bring her on board, she isn’t needed. Eriri tells Kousaka it’s too big a job and she’s in a bad slump, but Kousaka laughs in her face and calls her trash.

While one could easily dismiss Kousaka as a horrible person, there’s no doubting her passion for her work and the work she spearheads, and it’s clear this is a knock-down, drag-out cage-rattling. Eriri’s piddling excuses are of no consequence to her; no doubt she had the same excuses before she came into her own as an artist.

So I don’t think she’s wrong in trying to get both Eriri and Utaha to give up on silly little small-potatoes doujin work and really push themselves. That being said, it wasn’t fun watching the two get put through the ringer like that.

As for Tomoya? I can’t say I feel bad for the guy. For one thing, it was presumptuous enough to ask a writer and artist of Utaha and Eriri’s caliber to help him make one game. For another, he doesn’t have the proper producer mentality (in part because they’re all friends) to properly push them.

Even if the final two episodes deal with Tomoya getting them back, I’m not sure it will feel like a victory to me. A second game might be an accomplishment for Tomoya and Megumi, but it would be stagnation for the creatives. They’ve already proven themselves. Time to move on to bigger things…as long as that’s what they want, of course.
