American Songbook legend Tony Bennett has passed away at the age of 96.
The world has lost a legendary vocalist whose voice personified the American Songbook: Tony Bennett. He was 96. A spokesman for the singer confirmed the news that Bennett had passed away on Friday morning in New York City. Even after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s illness in 2016, he continued to periodically do live performances and put out new music. In 2021, at age 95, his second duet…

I think this is an opinion that can be formed only after listening to thousands of hours of music for decades.
Who is one of the greatest song writers of the past 100 years?
Billy Joel. Undisputed.
I know there are lots of other artists who you all might fit the bill, but where Billy Joel gets them is the diversity of his music. Listen to the following songs:
Piano Man
Uptown Girl
We Didn’t Start The Fire
Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)
You May Be Right
Just The Way You Are
I could list more classics, but I chose these because they are completely different genres. Piano Man has a strong folk rock vibe and makes me feel like I’m sitting in an old pub. Meanwhile, Uptown Girl is full on doo-wop, a solid 30 years after the genres heyday. We Didn’t Start The Fire is a solid example of late 80s/ early 90s pop rock, while Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel) is a beautiful pop ballad to his daughter. According to Wikipedia, the song was originally supposed to be in the style of a Gregorian Chant, and I can hear it if you listen to the chords chosen for the opening and think of it on a church organ instead, like in Hunchback of Notre Dame. You May Be Right is a solid rock song with touches of pop, reminiscent of the early 80s music, and Just The Way You Are is a soft rock jazz piece.
I didn’t realize that all these songs were by the same person until I was an adult. Here’s who I originally thought they were by.
Piano Man: Elton John (probably as a kid I saw Elton John performing on the piano often)
Uptown Girl: Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
We Didn’t Start The Fire: any one of the 80s rock bands from the UK. I can’t pinpoint one
Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel): this one might have been closest to my perception of who Billy Joel as a kid
You May Be Right: I genuinely thought this song was by the Rolling Stones for a LONG time.
Just The Way You Are: Tony Bennett
And while I didn’t list it above because he didn’t write it, he’s the original performer of Make You Feel My Love, aka my favourite Adele song.
There are so many great songwriters now, but they all have a distinct style that is easily identifiable. Billy Joel jumped between genres completely with each album so effortlessly that I think many people not familiar with his music would think they are all different artists, like I did as a kid. That takes incredible music skills. He needs more love from younger generations.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Chief Keef & Mike WiLL Made-It Feed The Streets with 'Dirty Nachos' Mixtape
Tumblr media
Working their magic from different corners of the map, Chief Keef and Mike WiLL Made-It have each shaped the sound of contemporary hip-hop to an immeasurable degree. Today, the two street rap titans share Dirty Nachos, their first collaborative mixtape, out now via 43B / Ear Drummer Records / RBC Records.
Over the course of 18 tracks, Sosa and Mike deliver a diverse platter of hard-hitting street slappers, with each distinct element enhancing the other like jalapeños, chili, and cheese on a dish of fully-loaded nachos. The two legends make a perfect pair, the rapper switching up his flows to seamlessly fit the producer's symphonic soundscapes. The scraping pizzicato strings of "RIDICULOUSNESS" inspire Sosa to sink his teeth into the instrumental and not let go, whipping quick cadences between the booming 808s. Recent single "DIRTY NACHOS" is a chaotic confection of screeching synths and subsonic 808s, leaving space for Sosa's sly smack talk. On songs like "WHY YOU MAD" and "PROMENADE," Mike applies a lighter touch, and Sosa responds with the taffy-like pitch-shifted melodies that only he can conjure.
youtube
Hosted by the Trap-A-Holics, Dirty Nachos welcomes two guests, one from the Midwest and one from the South to complement the two main artist. Mike WiLL's frequent collaborator 2 Chainz graces "PULL UP GHOST CLAN" with his inimitable presence, while Sosa continues his streak of searing Sexyy Red collaborations with "DAMN SHORTY." The tape ends with “LOVE DON’T LIVE HERE,”  "HARLEY QUINN," "STATUS," and "BANG BANG," four previously-released Chief Keef-Mike WiLL collaborations that showed fans what to expect from the full mixtape.
Dirty Nachos is the opening salvo in what is shaping up to be a busy year for Chief Keef. The 28-year-old rapper is currently hard at work putting the finishing touches on Almighty So 2. The follow-up to one of Sosa's most mind-bending projects (2013's Almighty So, home to hits like "Blew My High") Almighty So 2 follows in the wake of 2022 singles like "Racks Stuffed Inna Couch," "Chief So," and "Tony Montana Flow." The hotly-anticipated Almighty So 2 drops later this year via 43B, Chief Keef's record label, formed in a joint venture with BMG. Recently, Sosa collaborated with Sexyy Red on two singles from her Hood Hottest Princess (Deluxe)–"Ghetto Princess," and "Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Mama)," and teamed up with Lil Yachty for "Say Ya Grace," a highlight from All Is Yellow, the first album by Lyrical Lemonade. The song's Cole Bennett-directed video has already gone viral: the song reached the top 5 of YouTube's Trending chart, and racked up over 3 million views in its first week of release.
Mike WiLL Made-It has been on a momentous streak with recent successes, including notable releases such as  "Wanna Come Thru" ft. Coi Leray, the remix of U2’s “Atomic City”, Gucci Mane's latest single, “Cold,” featuring B.G., and collaborations like “Blood Moon” with Lil Uzi Vert and “There I Go” with J. Cole and Gucci Mane. In a pioneering move, Mike WiLL Made-It was announced as the first-ever lead producer for the 2023-2024 NBA season on ESPN, with his track  “Now or Neva” featuring MoneyBagg Yo, showcased in ESPN’s NBA In-Season Tournament official commercial. This came as a follow up to the initial single, "Different Breed," featuring the incomparable Swae Lee and Latto. At this year’s Grammy Awards Mike WiLL received an Album of The Year nomination for his work on Endless Summer, alongside longtime collaborator Miley Cyrus, holding a producer credit on “Thousand Miles” (Ft. Brandi Carlile), “Violet Chemistry,” and “Muddy Feet” (Ft. Sia)”. Showing no signs of slowing down, 2024 promises to be an impactful and buzzy year for Mike WiLL with more new music on the horizon.

FICTIONAL CHARACTER ASK: JOHNNY FIAMA
Asked by @princesssarisa
@moonbeamelf @fragglesesamemuppetz2 @softlytowardthesun @themousefromfantasyland @angelixgutz @amalthea9
Favorite Thing About Them: His passion for a period in music history and genre that is not really popular in modern times. He doesn't care that is not a trend, he sings crooner music and dresses in a rat pack style gangster suit because that is what he loves and identifies with, and that is a nice message of encouragement that the character presents in a subtle way.
Least Favorite Thing About Them: He can be arrogant and frequently force himself into other people's spaces, even trying to force other people to eat his mother's spagetthi when they just don't want to or can't at the moment.
Three Things I Have In Common With Them:
* I love pasta;
* I enjoy the melody of the song Goldfinger;
* I probably would get nervous in awe when meeting an idol;
Three Things I Don't Have In Common With Them:
* I'm not italian american;
* I don't have a monkey working for me as my security guard;
* I'm not a crooner singer;
Favorite Line:
This exchange he has with Clifford and Sal Minella about his Tony Bennet fanboy memorabilia:
"Johnny Fiama: Oh, Clifford! I'm so glad you stopped in. Listen, in honor of Tony being on the show, I thought I'd bring in a few of my collectibles from home.
Clifford: You brought in all this yourself?
Johnny Fiama: Oh, you better believe it, kid.
Sal Minella: I got the last one here, Johnny.
Johnny Fiama: Oh, thank you, Sal. Listen, put it over there, huh, pal?
Sal Minella: Okay.
Johnny Fiama: Great. Look, Clifford, I got every album Tony Bennett ever made, including this very rare, Sergeant Tony's Lonely Hearts Club Gang, which, by the way, came out a week before the one with those other guys.
Clifford: The Beatles?...
Johnny Fiama: Whatever. Anyway, look, I got the Tony Bennett lunchbox, huh? And then, and then I got the Tony Bennett action figure with kung-fu grip. And then, I got a full case of his canned pasta, Rig-a-Tony Bennett!
Sal Minella: You want I should open a can, Johnny?
Johnny Fiama: Sal. Is it New Year's?
Sal Minella: No. Sorry, Johnny."
These line he says when playing the role of Prince John in the comic Muppet Robin Hood:
"Look, boys, I really don't care what he does to Marian, but this whole thing makes me look bad, and you know I hate to look bad."
"Now that I think about it, I could really go for some cookies right now! Can we get some cookies here?"
brOTP: Clifford, Big Mean Carl, Dr. Phill van Neuter, Seymour the Elephant, Pepe the King Prawn, Spamela Hamderson, Bobo the Bear, Rowlf the Dog.
OTP: Sal Minella, Dr. Teeth.
nOTP: Clarissa, the lady who hates his music style and who sitted with Johnny Fiama in a dinner table because Sal Minella forced her.
Random Headcanon: He only imitates the fashion of gangsters that he saw on movies, but he isn't really in the mob.
Unpopular Opinion: He is a great Muppet character who is specially fitting to play antagonistic roles (like Prince John in the comic Muppet Robin Hood) and should be considered an important member of the gang just like Bobo the Bear and Pepe the King Prawn have becomed.

this might be a big ask so it's okay if you can't answer it, but I was wondering if you could help me narrow down some old music to listen to, esp Frank Sinatra and Elvis since I think you have knowledge/reference with both of them? I'm interested in exploring things but there's A LOT and idk where to begin!
i love that you asked this, it's well-established that nothing in the world makes me happier than recommending/sharing music that is special to me, of any kind and from any time! it definitely is a LOT of content to take in, and hard to sort where to look because there's not only so much work across their catalogs, there are also all the compilation albums. if you have apple music, a simpler way to start is the essentials playlists, they don't include everything that i would myself, but they're good overviews! (ep, fs). and i'll use spotify links on these for you in case you have that instead <3
there are such a vast amount of individual songs that it's difficult to choose exactly where to point you!
with frank, first of all, nice 'n' easy is one of my favorite albums of all-time. like it's at the top of my list with red and rumours for Albums Needed to Understand Me. i think the best overview of his earlier years (when he was signed to capitol records, before he formed his own label, reprise), is this one. songs for swingin' lovers, in the wee small hours, and come fly with me are also fabulous. ring-a-ding-ding is so much fun. for an overview of his later career and the reprise years, nothing but the best has some great songs!
with elvis, i am actually doing whole album explorations myself! i've basically just always had a bunch of hits in my collection rather than full records. and my fave songs feel so obvious (can't help falling in love, love me tender, suspicious minds, fever, always on my mind, a little less conversation, i'm coming home, there's always me, it's now or never, that's all right, are you lonesome tonight, baby let's play house, surrender, burning love, that's all right...). the album if i can dream that they remastered/recorded with the royal philharmonic is absolutely gorgeous. this one is a collection of #1's, there's the recording of the '68 comeback special, something for everybody and from elvis in memphis are great.
i'd also highly recommend looking into ella fitzgerald if you like frank's music, because she's wonderful too. the industry was structured differently then - i used to have a wider breadth of knowledge that i could tell you about all of this, it's faded out of my head over the years, but you'll find many of the same songs recorded by different artists because songwriting and vocalists weren't quite as personally interconnected as they are now, and popular music was very much comprised of the songbook standards, so artists would essentially license songs from a given writer and put their own spin on them, rather than all releasing their own individual things. (this is notable, for example, with elvis and hound dog, which often is erroneously criticized. big mama thornton did record her rendition first, but the song was created by and belonged to two jewish songwriters, jerry leiber and mike stoller. it had already been covered multiple times (including by a white vocal group, which was how he encountered it initially) when elvis heard it, liked it, and chose to adapt/record it. (i searched around for info for you and there's more informed elaboration on that here!) a rich legacy of american music from the earlier crooners and jazz artists lies with jewish composers, both on radio and on broadway (and at the time, those often overlapped), so you'll find many of the singers recorded gershwin, irving berlin, lorenz hart, rodgers and hammerstein, sammy cahn, frank loesser, etc. and then there were other prominent writers like the incomparable cole porter (who has been covered sensationally by lady gaga and tony bennett!), johnny mercer, etc. then elvis was very inspired by and had immense respect for black artists/writers, r&b and gospel, so you get an infusion of all of those backgrounds and influences. (frank and elvis were both very openly supportive of artists of color around them and tried to help open doors, as marilyn famously did for ella as well. it was such a complex time, and i think it's important to keep those aspects in mind and remember the many voices and legacies that were playing their parts!) both of those men (and bing crosby, who helped pioneer the single, among other things), and their many contemporaries, transformed music as a whole, and that still resonates powerfully to this day, even in places where we might not realize it.
i hope this helps a little! 💗 the best thing you can do, honestly, is just dive in and explore, you're guaranteed to find gems and specific songs you love, and there's so much to spend time with and to enjoy.

Serious Listening? Maybe.
I got the streaming Nano thing running and decided to try it out. Hey I spent the money, I suffered the installation drama. What do I get for it?
So streaming from the couch here I go.
Using my iphone with it set to lossless I played several pieces to get a feel for it. The lossless symbol was displayed so lets assume it was that. Apparently even older Iphones will do Airplay 2 (Hi Rez) if they have recent IOS versions and mine does.
I started with a stream selection of solo piano. It sounded like piano alright. I gave the system about an hour to get happy with that.
I have a cover album by Morgan James of Joni Mitchel's Blue. Just a singer and piano. It sounds like it is one continuous take. It is wonderful music. It is on file on my iphone as I bought it. Sounded very nice. Extremely simple production.
I then tried streaming some tunes I am familiar with on LP or CD. Tony Bennett and Faith Hill from Duets 2 has some tiny things on LP I was looking for. I did not get them. They are like the lip parting sound. If I was going full geek I should have run the LP right then to compare. That would have been the audiophile thing to do. I didn't.
Next I tried "Postcard Blues" from Trinity Session by Cowboy Junkies. Here I noticed something interesting. There seemed to be a bias to the right speaker. I may have done that in the configuration, but shifting a bit over on my couch helped. Usually not that critical.
All the sounds were there, but different. Recall I have the original CD and a fancy LP of this album. Those sound very similar to each other, this was different somehow. Less room sound?
This was a quick and dirty exercise so all first impressions.
I then tried "Soul Cages" by Sting first song "Island of Souls". This sounded pretty good. I have an LP of this and the album is processed with Qsound which is a quasi binaural trick. And it worked pretty well. Some instruments sounded far out past the speakers both left and right. The LP has a less prominent rendition of that. Qsound uses phase shifting and filtering for its effects. So the feed was pretty accurate I suppose.
Summary of impressions: I feel something is missing. The sound is clear, and clean, but there is a but. I am not sure what it is. Maybe it is too quiet? Maybe something is actually missing. Maybe lossless aint?
One thing I feel disoriented by is there is too much available online. If I put an album on the turntable the document is there and I only decide if I want to flip it in 20 minutes. I have time to think about what is next. On a stream you can change your mind instantly and go from classical music to Jazz to pop in seconds. That is stressful, this is supposed to be fun.
I am old.
I recall a comment from somewhere that a person said streaming is for background music. Serious listening is better some other way. I can see truth in that.
I pay for apple music so I can explore and consider albums for purchase. Maybe more obscure works by composers. Also sometimes background music is a good thing.
Next challenge is getting my Wife's iPhone rigged into this thing.

MMMM: "Snowfall: The Tony Bennett Christmas Album"
As I said last week, this year I’m going to be featuring full Christmas albums. Today, Tony Bennett’s 1968 classic, Snowfall: The Tony Bennett Christmas Album. Allmusic gives it five stars while the user rating is 4.5, so it’s an excellent album, and it only runs a little over a half hour. Robert Farnon did all the arrangements and conducted the orchestra. Enjoy! Snowfall My Favorite Things The…

"Bad romance" and "Royals"
We're nearing the end of the #FearOfMu21c project, crowdsourcing the greatest singles of the 21st century. Here’s an index post.
Bad romance - Lady Gaga
Which Lady Gaga song to pick? And do we consider the video when making the decision: if so, then "Telephone" is going to be a very strong contender, even though the song is far from her best. Gaga's songs fall into three camps - in-yer-face statements like "Born this way", powerhouse vocals like "Shallow", and artpop.
We wouldn't know Gaga if she hadn't done artpop, and the best example is "Bad romance". Released in late 2009, Gaga was adventurous, playful, and had a strong message to sell. Like the rest of "The Fame" album, it's a commentary on the aughts decade: obsessed with popularity and celebrity, hedonistic and flashing a lot of skin.
Tumblr media
And, yes, we're influenced by the video. Alexander McQueen sent in the costumes worn by Gaga and her dancers, not the sort of thing you'll see on sale at Primark on Wednesday week. Full of white latex, orbiting rings, a chandelier top, the clip shows Gaga as a pawn for sale, an amusement for rich men.
Shorn of the video, "Bad romance" still works. It's a throwback to early 90s eurodance, all hooks and a soaring chorus. The "woah-oh-oh-oh" at the front was how Gaga started work on the song, finished with producer RedOne. There are little musical mutations throughout, cadences rise and fall on their own accord, and the home key (A-flat minor) is rarely visited. And that's just one reason "Bad romance" still sounds awesome.
In the years since, Gaga swore her love for queers on "Born This Way", made "Artpop", worked with Tony Bennett on "Cheek to cheek", and acted in "American Horror Story" and "A Star is Born". For the last of these, Gaga won an Oscar for "Shallow" - and that very nearly made my 50.

Royals - Lorde
Writing from the heart, Lorde penned "Royals" in less than an hour. The song reads like a teenage diary, frustrated and irritated and aspiring for her better world. The song contrasts Lorde's humdrum suburban life to those of the stars and celebrities.
"What really got me is this ridiculous, unrelatable, unattainable opulence. Lana Del Rey is always singing about being in the Hamptons or driving her Bugatti Veyron or whatever, and at the time, me and my friends were at some house party worrying how to get home because we couldn't afford a cab. This is our reality! If I write songs about anything else then I'm not writing anything that's real."
Tumblr media
"Royals" has a sense of place, it comes from being on the fringes of the dominant culture. It's a song from Aotearoa, it could be a song from Newfoundland or Derry. We see the materialist stuff, we're exposed to celebrity, and - through an accident of geography - we can never join it. Lorde advances the conversation started by Lady Gaga.
Lorde has proven more than this one hit, releasing the album "Melodrama" and pro-Antarctic book "Going South". I seriously considered "Solar Power"'s single "Secrets from a girl (who's seen it all)" for the Top 50, losing out for variety.
