For the second time in a month both the @NYT and its theater critic @JesseKGreen have been called out for their overt racism in reviewing. First, it was actor Tonya Pinkins. This time by the producers of #KPOP.
November 12, A Raisin in the Sun star Tonya Pinkins wrote a lengthy letter to Green on Medium last month, arguing he viewed the play through a white lens with little regard for the lived Black experience and contributed to its early closure.
Lo and behold, Green is being accused of a redux but this time the object of his selective pale gaze is a musical told from the prism of Korean music.
In response to the producers of KPOP, the NYT editors convened and doubled down. (No indication was given regarding the diversity of this NYT internal panel.) They released a statement more-or-less affirming that the white gaze is their artistic editorial standard and they see nothing wrong with it.
"We saw the open letter written about The Times's review of KPOP and quickly convened a discussion among editors and members of our standards department. This group was in agreement that Jesse's review was fair. More importantly, we wholly disagree with the argument that Jesse's criticism is somehow racist. We always welcome feedback and reaction to our journalism, and have conveyed a similar reply to the producers who wrote the open letter."
So now we all know, officially. Reader beware.

'Raisin in the Sun,' a Glorious, Triumphant Revival at the Public
Don't miss this incredible revival starring Tonya Pinkins at the Public Theater, with Robert O'Hara directing.
Mandi Masden, Tonya Pinkins, and Toussaint Battiste in The Public Theater revival of A Raisin in the Sun, directed by Robert O’Hara (Joan Marcus). Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, aptly titled referencing the Langston Hughes’ poem, “A Dream Deferred,” is enjoying its fourth major New York City revival. It debuted on Broadway to great acclaim in 1959 and followed with two other Broadway…

Celebrating Black History Month
Greetings,
Just want to add my first Sims 4 CC creation to tumblr. Forgot to do this earlier.
Enjoy Black History Month and beyond with Black Theatre Posters celebrating the August Wilson Century Cycle chronicling 100 years of the African-American experience beginning in 1900 through 2000. There are ten plays representing each decade.
August Wilson (1945 - 2005) remains one of the most prolific African-American playwrights and artists whose plays have appeared on Broadway, garnering numerous awards, starring such noted actors as Phylicia Rashad, Denzel Washington, Mary Alice, Keith David, Tonya Pinkins, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Leslie Uggams, Samuel L. Jackson, Courtney B. Vance, Angela Basset, Harry Lennix, Ruben Santiago Hudson, Whoopi Goldberg, Charles "Roc" Dutton, S. Epatha Merkerson, Lou Myers, Lawrence Fishburn and Viola Davis, just to name a few.
August Wilson is the first and only African-American artists to have a Broadway theatre re-named in his honor.  The Virginia theatre was renamed the August Wilson Theatre shortly after his passing.
What line or scene do you remember from your favorite August Wilson play?   Feel free to share them here.   (Having seen almost all of the B'way runs, I must say that Phylicia Rashad's performance as Aunt Ester in Gem of the Ocean sticks out strongest for me.)
Life has been wild for me since my initial upload January 2023.  Looking forward to regular uploads this year and in the future.  Enjoy.  Also note, my content will ALWAYS BE FREE!!
Just Keep Simmin', Simmin', Simmin'!!!

Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1B
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two-time Tony winner Judith Light (1949) made her professional stage and Broadway debuts in the 70s, and several decades and more than half a dozen shows later, earned her first Tony nomination in 2011 for Lombardi. She has periodically starred on Broadway for mostly non-profit companies and has won for The Assembled Parties (2013), and Other Desert Cities (2011). At the 2019 Tony Awards, Judith was honored with the Isabelle Stevenson Award for "Advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and the fight against HIV/AIDS."
Tonya Pinkins (1962) began her stage career in 1981 with the Broadway production of Merrily We Roll Along, a show that famously lasted sixteen performances. Luckily for Tonya, this was no indicator of her subsequent career, which has reached great success on and off-Broadway with wonderful shows such as Jelly's Last Jam (1992) which won her a Tony, Caroline, or Change (2002), which should have won her a second Tony, and A Raisin in the Sun (2022), which caused a bit of a stir in the critic community.
PROPAGANDA AND MEDIA UNDER CUT:

"Few Divas on our list have a cult following on the twitter, but Judith Light is - for better or worse - one of them. And you know, that's fair. She's wildly attractive, ungodly talented, and a legitimate chameleon in her work. Did you know she also played Joanne in a regional production of Company? Where is the footage of her singing "The Ladies Who Lunch?" and why is it not everywhere?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
"Tonya Pinkins should have won the 2004 Tony and I will die on that hill, as will most theatre fans who actually appreciate art. It's been twenty years and everyone in this godforsaken community still has a ranked list of Best Actresses for that year, and even if they don't believe Tonya should have won, they sure as hell don't put who actually won first. 2004 Broadway just couldn't handle a Black character who wasn't nice and Mammy to her white employers."
