Tumblr media
“Hairless Hugh Jackman or Skinny Henry Cavill?”
My head rested against the cold window of the car, my eyes closed. I was tired and bored, but the game of ‘this or that’ being played next to me, kept my mind awake. I wouldn’t admit it but my siblings' answers and conversations could actually be entertaining. Now being a prime example.
I considered the question more deeply than I probably should have. “Hairless Hugh takes away everything good about him, so obviously Henry.” I answered with my eyes still closed and head against the window.
“Ew, no,” My sister replied. “Henry’s body in the Superman movies are, like, all that I live for. I couldn’t care less about Hugh Jackman.” She laughed and scrunched her nose like she was picturing both options. I just smiled, acknowledging her answer before opening my eyes to stare at the passing trees out of the window.
My forehead was cold from the temperature outside but I was too awestruck by the view: white covered trees and mountains stretched for miles. The winter season cloaked the entire outdoors and snow sparked in the little sunlight. I couldn’t wait until we reached the cabin.
My sister and brother, twins, were only a year younger than me, so their experiences with Christmas break are similar to mine.
Every year, my family travels to Canada and stays in our winter cabin over Christmas Break. Safe to say, I have been waiting for Christmas break to start since July. It’s the only time of year I feel at peace without the commotion of work and stress.
And I guess the view’s nice too.
We had been driving for hours in a tightly packed minivan, and past a group of trees, I spotted a small town, meaning we were close to our destination. Next to me, I felt my sister shift and basically lie on top of me to get a look out of the window. I grumbled and tried to push her off since her elbow was digging in my side but she was unrelenting.
“Wow, look at this!” She spoke to my brother who was sitting two seats away from me. He had his own window and looked just as mesmerized as I was. No matter how many times we visit, the scenery would never be anything but gorgeous.
Tumblr media
The tires of the minivan crunched as we pulled onto the gravel driveway of the cabin. Immediately, my family began piling out and grabbing everything we packed, which was a lot. I walked through the large door of the cabin with very little visibility because of the mound of blankets and bags I was carrying. I started heading straight towards my bedroom before I knocked into someone without looking and everything fell from my arms. I gasped and started muttering about how they should have moved out of the way, fully expecting the person I bumped into to be one of my siblings but as I looked up I saw who I actually bumped into and immediately shut up.
“Oh, it’s just you.” I deadpanned. I stood up straight and quit trying to pick up my stuff, resting a hand on my hip at the person in front of me.
Oscar Piastri. As in the son of the family that stayed in the cabin with us every summer.
Nicole and Chris Piastri, his parents, were my parents’ best friends since highschool. But, when we moved to America and they stayed in Australia, the only time we ever see the Piastri family is over Christmas Break.
Earlier, when I was talking about how much I adore the cabin, I forgot about this information. I take back what I said. Christmas Break is not a break of peace. Instead, its weeks of torture and stress as i barely survive around Mr. Annoying, himself: Oscar Piastri.
What’s annoying about him isn’t that he’s loud or obnoxious- it’s the very opposite.
Ever since we were little, when our families lived a block away from each other, Oscar barely reacted to anything. Most adults or kids our age loved his calm exterior and how ‘mature he was for his age,’ meanwhile I was constantly regarded as a ‘trouble child.’
I was jealous. Of Course I was jealous. Oscar got praised for years and I was pushed away and given a sucker to stay away.
What was the worst, however, was how Oscar acted around me. To others he was a saint, but around me, he made sure to agonize me any chance he got. He would push me off of the swing and then when adults would ask what happened he would pretend like I fell and he was helping me up.
Asshole.
Anyways, now I only have to see him once a year, but those few weeks in December make me want to rip my hair out and run away with a hairless Hugh Jackman.
When I saw who I bumped into, my excited smile was replaced with what felt like a snarl. Oscar stood in front of me, a stupid sirk on his lips, probably having ran into me on purpose.
“Y/n. Didn’t see you there.” He said, a sly smirk still present. He was wearing an orange hoodie, no doubt merch of his. Because, did I mention, Perfect-Piastri also happens to be a Formula-fucking-One Mclaren Racing driver.
Yeah…
So, another thing he holds above me.
“Yeah sure you didn’t” I mutter while moving to shove everything back into my arms. But as I picked up one thing, another fell and instead of noticing my struggle and helping, Oscar just stood there. However, once my parents barreled through the door, arms just as full as mine was, so in order to look helpful, Oscar bent down to carry the heaviest bag.
“Oh! Oscar,” my mom noticed him. “We had no idea you guys had arrived yet.” She had a warm smile on her lips, genuinely happy to see him. “We were hoping to get here first and start cooking dinner.”
She motioned towards my dad who held the bags of groceries we had bought before heading here. In the bags were cans of yams and frozen veggies, indicating their plans.
“Oh, no worries.” Oscar replies, with a matching smile. “My mom started cooking already. We would definitely be happy to enjoy your cooking tomorrow, though. I really am a sucker for your candied yams.”
I watched the scene unfold and rolled my eyes.
Oscar turned back towards me with an amused look and started walking away towards my room, my bag in hand. I shut my eyes tightly, and looked up, praying that I wouldn't go insane this month before following him up the stairs.

arent ocean liners and cruise ships basically the same thing? how can you like one and not the other?
oh my guy, theyre certainly not the same thing.
they might seem similar to those of the world who arent super into ships, but theyre both different vessels by design and function. if youd rather watch a video detailing differences, id recommend this one by the great big move or oceanliner designs video comparing the strathaird to the pacific encounter, but ill also happily explain some basic differences because i like infodumping.
see we dont really have a use for ocean liners anymore; they were mostly phased out when jet air travel picked up steam. the only one existing today is the rms queen mary 2.
ocean liners acted essentially as buses for the sea. they offered regular passage across continents. the most famous route is probably the southampton to new york route which is what the titanic was intended for. most of the famous ocean liners were on this route like the lusitania, the queen mary, the normandie, the bremen, etc.
but there were plenty of other routes going across the whole ocean. the italian line had a south american service, canadian pacific had a whole thing from liverpool to quebec that linked to their railways, p&o did a lot of stuff around australia and aotearoa, etc.
because of the regular passage offered, ocean liners couldnt sail around storms like cruise ships do. they had to battle the storm to get to their destination on time which means the ships were designed with this in mind. they are designed to travel through open oceans to cross large distances while cruise ships tend to stay close to the coast and wont travel far at all, relatively speaking.
as such, ocean liners sit much lower in the water and will tend to have a long, pointed bow. this allows them to much more easily cut through oncoming waves. if theyre sailing around icy waters, theyll also have reinforced bows like the stockholm did. after titanic, ocean liners began to be built with a "second skin" to their hull which is just a second hull inside the outer hull to reinforce the ship and protect against damages from anything from rough waves to icebergs.
further, the bridge on an ocean liner will be higher up, often on the top deck. this both aids with navigation for the crew as theyll have better vision, but also stops high waves from breaking over the bridge and covering it with water. the very few times where this occurred were often rogue wave encounters like the lusitania and the leonardo da vinci. the lifeboats will also often be positioned more inward to protect them from any damage from rough seas or weather.
this isnt to say cruise ships arent built to withstand rough weather. they certainly are, but not repeated occurrences of it. an ocean liner was going to face rough weather week after week after week; cruise ships tend to have the luxury of avoiding it.
cruise ships will sit higher up in the water, their bows will likely be much softer in angle and they will sail at a much lower speed.
if an ocean liner is a bus for the oceans, then a cruise ship is a party bus.
while most ocean liners did have beautiful interior and quarters for passengers, they dont hold a candle to cruise ships which are comparable to holiday resorts.
as ocean liners were being phased out, many lines began operating them as cruise ships because they could easily be converted into such. this happened with plenty of ocean liners like the ss france. others were specifically designed to operate as ocean liners half the year and cruise ships the other half like the rms empress of britain.
however, a cruise ship could not operate as an ocean liner because its simply not built for that.
this isnt getting into all the ethics of both vessels and their industries because thats a whole different topic that i feel much less qualified to speak on.
i will say that i am not a fan of cruise ships or the industry as a whole, and that also, cruise ships are so fucking ugly, my dude. they look like badly designed malls dropped on top of ships.
but yeah tl;dr: theyre different types of ships with different designs and functions. see the bus vs party bus comparison, i guess.

Eurovision 2022: #26
Tumblr media
26. Cyprus
Andromache - “Ela” 27th place
youtube
Decade Rank: #52/79 [Above Blind Channel, below The Black Mamba]
Happy holidays! It’s time to emerge from off-season mode and power through the remainder of these updates, as we get excited for more niche faves that are destined to fall flat and be terrible (my prayers are with you, Megara and Tokimeki and Chérine).
Funnily enough I HAD prepared an larger, sharper update for Andromache earlier but my PC crashed so here’s a more unabridged and ranty version: CYPRUS HAD THAT NQ COMING!!!!!! For the past four years they were riding Eleni’s coattails and attempting to placate the Fa...ns Of This Show in increasedly soulless knock-offs, so it was only a matter that came flying back into their faces like a fanged boomerang.
Tumblr media
I wasn’t necessarily rooting for the failure of this *particular* Cyprus entry, though. “Ela” at least made an attempt at sounding genuinely Cypriotic. It also somehow took ten people, (one of them being one of Stefania’s Invisible Men), to write this basic ethnic tune. To top it of, an anemic female lead whose name can affectionately (and accurately) be bastardized into “AndroidMachine”. The bones of a quirky random fave were there!
Sadly, the live. I don’t think the voice was as bad as I’ve seen others proclaim it to have been, but it was Very Not Good. AndroidMachine always the problem of sounding both very nasal and very bored, like a Sarah McTiernan on perdolan,  but even with taking that into account, it’s surprising she did so poorly. She failed to hit many notes of this - again- really basic tune while virtually standing still? Did you not rehearse, Andro? Do you have an Ikea membership I’m unaware of?
Worse vocals have qualified before though, so good visuals COULD have brought solace (in the form of shoving Azer out of the finals), but alas.
Cramming Andro into a polystyreme scallop and having her emit a mermaid call like was a promising premise. I WAS hoping for a Batista-like staging, as with shirtless adonises to distract as much as possible from Andromache being... wel... herself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, the act Cyprus went with was just some inane flailing + colours projections that cast shadows ON THE FUCKING SHELL.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But don’t worry about the lack of dynamism, after the blue, we’re going repeat the same thing with yellow and magenta. 🙃 It’s easy to see why Cyprus NQ’d but also see that it very easily could have been avoided. Just... give us some life? Some movement? Like a performance befitting an AndroidMachine, "Ela” was run entirely on Airplane Mode.
But hey at least the Basics got to live their life out of this one, I guess, evidenced by that one Spanish guy getting the shell tattoo’d on his wrist. 😂 (was he Spanish? idk. Getting an “Ela” tattoo requires a specific combination of feral impulsivity and insanity that I’m only willing to attribute to certain Spanish fans). Each to their own, I guess, and I have other faves to stan!
I cannot wait to see which lessons Cyprus have learned from this journey 🙂 (none, because they chose Andrew Limpbrou for 2023 lmfaooooo)
BUT WAIT because it’s been so long and it’s almost New Year here’s a bonus update where I boot some additional rando I don’t really care for. Let’s hear it for:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
25. ARMENIA
Rosa Linn - “Snap” 20th place
youtube
Decade rank: 50/79 [above The Black Mamba, below James Newman]
"Snap” is cute. It was a fairly unremarkable Eurovision entry though. 🙂
THE RANKING
Tumblr media
25. ARMENIA - Rosa Linn - “Snap” 26. CYPRUS - Andromache - “Ela” 27. LATVIA - Citi Zeni - “Eat your salad” 28. DENMARK - ReDDI - “The show” 29. BULGARIA - Intelligent Music Project - “Intention” 30. GREECE - Amanda Tenjford - “Die together” 31. POLAND - Ochman - “River” 32. MONTENEGRO - Vladana - “Breathe” 33. FINLAND - The Rasmus - "Jezebel" 34. BELGIUM - Jérémie Makiese - “Miss you” 35. NORWAY - Subwoolfer - “Give that wolf a banana” 36. AUSTRALIA - Sheldon Riley - “Not the same” 37. SWITZERLAND - Marius Bear - “Boys do cry” 38. AZERBAIJAN - Nadir Rustamli - “Fade to black” 39. ITALY - Mahmood & Blanco - “Brividi” 40. ISRAEL - Michael Ben David - “I.M” (yes, that is the canonical Rosa Linn write-up ^_^)

Why Indian Students Prefer Australia for Higher Education in 2024
Tumblr media
Australia has become a top destination for Indian students seeking higher education abroad. In 2024, the trend is only growing stronger due to various factors. From proximity to weather and visa policies to job prospects, Australia is highly attractive to Indian students. Let’s explore why.
Proximity to India
One key reason why Indian students prefer to study in Australia is the proximity to India. Flights between India and Australia are shorter compared to those to Europe or the USA. This makes it easier for students to visit home during holidays or family events. Additionally, Australia’s time zone is closer to India’s, making it easier to stay in touch with family and friends. Proximity also means that cultural similarities are more pronounced, helping students feel more at home while studying abroad.
Favorable Weather Conditions
The weather in Australia is another significant factor. Unlike the cold climates in many European and North American countries, Australia enjoys a mild and sunny climate, especially in cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Indian students often find it easier to adjust to the warm, temperate climate, which is similar to many parts of India. This is a crucial comfort factor for students who want to avoid harsh winters while focusing on their studies.
Streamlined Visa Policies
Australia’s student visa policies are known to be relatively straightforward and favorable. The Student Visa (subclass 500) allows international students to stay in Australia for the duration of their studies. Moreover, the visa process is simplified with the help of study abroad consultants who specialize in assisting Indian students.
The Australian government has also been proactive in offering post-study work visas, allowing students to gain valuable work experience after completing their studies. This makes Australia an attractive choice for students who want to build a career overseas after graduation. Many overseas education consultancies in India help students with the entire visa application process, ensuring a smooth transition to studying in Australia.
High-Quality Education and University Reputation
Australia is home to some of the world’s top-ranked universities, including the University of Melbourne, Australian National University, and the University of Sydney. These universities offer a wide range of courses in fields like engineering, medicine, IT, and business management. For Indian students seeking high-quality education, studying in Australia opens up opportunities to learn from world-class faculty and access state-of-the-art research facilities.
Australia’s education system is recognized globally, and degrees from Australian universities are highly regarded in the international job market. This global recognition makes Australia a top choice for Indian students aiming for high-quality education and a strong academic reputation.
Lucrative Job Prospects
Tumblr media
One of the main attractions of studying in Australia for Indian students is the potential for good job opportunities. Australia’s booming economy offers numerous job prospects in sectors such as IT, healthcare, engineering, and business.
Thanks to the post-study work visa, Indian students can stay in Australia for up to four years after graduation. This allows them to gain practical work experience and explore career opportunities. Many companies in Australia are open to hiring international graduates, especially in high-demand industries.
Overseas education consultants often guide students on how to find internships and job placements during their studies, making it easier to transition into the Australian job market. The support from study abroad consultants can be crucial in navigating the job search process and maximizing post-study work opportunities.
Cultural Diversity and Safe Environment
Australia is known for its multicultural society, where international students are welcomed with open arms. Indian students find comfort in the diversity, as Australia is home to a large Indian community. The country offers a safe, inclusive environment for students from all over the world, making it easier to adjust and thrive.
Conclusion
In 2024, Australia continues to be a preferred destination for Indian students due to its proximity, favorable weather, streamlined visa policies, world-class education, and lucrative job prospects. The support provided by overseas education consultants helps Indian students navigate their journey, from choosing the right university to securing a visa and finding job opportunities.
If you’re considering studying in Australia as an Indian student, reach out to a trusted study abroad consultant to make your dream a reality.

Canada Ranks Among the Top 10 Countries for Work-Life Balance
Tumblr media
A study released by Remote HR, a global Human Resources firm, has found that Canada ranks among the top ten countries globally for work-life (or, as the study calls it, life-work) balance.
Canada placed fifth overall while New Zealand, Ireland, Belgium, and Demark took the top four spots.
The data includes rankings for several factors that influence an employee’s work-life balance. These include statutory annual leave, sick pay percentage, hours worked per week, minimum wage, and an overall happiness index.
Discover if You Are Eligible for Canadian Immigration
Canada achieved an overall score of 72.75 out of a possible 100. It scored high for its relatively short work week (an average of 32 hours for most Canadians), safety, and for being 2SLGBTQ+ friendly.
Germany, Finland, Australia, Norway, and Spain rounded out the top ten. Canada’s closest neighbor, the United States, ranked 55 out of 60 in the Remote rankings with a score of 31.82 due to no annual paid vacation or sick leave, non-universal healthcare, and more hours worked per week.
The data on average working hours in Canada reported by Remote is supported by the most recent Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) work-life balance rankings where Canada again placed fifth overall. OECD said that “just 3% of employees work very long hours in paid work, much less than the OECD average of 10%.”
OECD noted that full-time workers in Canada use 61% of their day (14.6 hours) for personal care. This includes eating and sleeping as well as leisure activities. This is just slightly less than the global average of 15 hours.
Canada is short on vacation time
The Remote report showed that Canada fell short in annual statutory leave and vacation time. The data said that people employed in Canada receive 17 days of annual statutory leave. However, this is not always easy to measure as employment standards in Canada are mandated by provincial governments. For example, in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, workers in the private sector (meaning those not employed by the federal government or in a federally regulated industry) can spend the first five years in any job with just 10 days (two weeks) of vacation time per year. According to the Ontario Employment Standards Act, minimum vacation entitlement increases to three weeks (15 days) after five years.
Again, this timeline can vary by province. Employees in Saskatchewan are entitled to three weeks of paid vacation after one year of employment, going up to four weeks after ten years. Quebec’s annual vacation entitlement rises from two weeks to three weeks after three years of employment.
This does not account for Canada’s federal statutory holidays such as Christmas Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Good Friday, and Victoria Day. There are also other public holidays but, in many instances and depending on the province, employees are not automatically entitled to take those days off. It often depends on their employer.
Comparatively, in both New Zealand and Ireland, all employees are entitled to four weeks of paid annual vacation after 12 months of continuous employment.
Consistently high rankings
Canada typically ranks high in global lists. For example, in January this year it was voted the world’s safest country for travelers by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP) and a study by Givetastic in late 2023 found that Canada is the world’s top “dream work destination.” Canada also has the world’s seventh strongest passport according to the most recent rankings by residence and citizenship advisory firm Henley and Partners.
These rankings add to Canada's appeal as one of the most sought-after destinations for newcomers.
