I remember back when I used to shout about the jaw-dropping talents of my favorite young Brit actors like John Boyega and Malachi Kirby who were virtually unknown here in the States. How dope is it that I don’t have to say anything more than the name now? My fellow Americans finally know. In fact, the entire intergalactic population of the Universe knows. John has a string of much-buzzed-about projects coming our way soon. Next month’s “Detroit” promises to be as lit as it is timely. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” written and directed by one of my favorite Neo-Noir screenwriters, Rian Johnson, drops on Dec 15, and “Pacific Rim: Uprising” in which he stars AND produces, will follow in 2018. IDENTIFIED AT LAST!!! (PART II) If you’ve been following me for very long I’m sure you’ve heard me shouting about Femi Ogun’s Identity School of Acting in London and 2 of my favorite young black actors to emerge from this amazing school. Back when I first started dropping their names very few Americans had heard of them and I had to jump through lots of hoops just to see their UK-based work here in the States. Now household names and on the lips of Hollywood’s movers and shakers, John Boyega and Malachi Kirby have officially blown up, and Femi Oguns is FINALLY getting the shine he deserves in the British mainstream media - 14 years after lighting his candle in the darkness. (Selah) Having watched misters Kirby and Boyega grow from American obscurity to “it boys” gives me an even deeper kindred sense of brotherhood with Identity than I had before. (and helps bolster the claims I sometimes hear in my corner of the industry about my “eye for new talent.”) Even tho I definitely fit the description of “outsider,” hahaha, this report by the BBC’s Colleen Harris gave me a warm familial feeling. I got all kinda love for Mr Oguns and my Identity family! And the purpose-minded alums keep taking flight!!! DAILY HALLOWEEN DOPE - MALACHI KIRBY IN BLACK MIRROR Netfilx dropped a new ad on social media this week promoting their hit series Black Mirror. Although there are 6 episodes with some very big stars in each episode, they chose LoJoFam Malachi Kirby as the subject of the promo. He has also been selected as one of BAFTA's #BreakThroughBrits. Malachi's vast range has been the subject of much of our praise over the years, he can truthfully convey a childlike vulnerability or a highly threatening rage and everything in-between, often in multilayered congruence. His range of skills are truly put to chilling use in his episode of Black Mirror. Onward & Upward bro!!! Just watching his IG account gain 20,000 followers every couple of days is amazing. We have been following his career for quite a few years over in the UK and from what we can tell, he is a well-grounded, level-headed brother who is uniquely qualified, not just for the role of Finn in Star Wars The Force Awakens, but for the mind-twisting notoriety and instant celebrity that comes with this once-in-a-generation role. John's agent (& discover) is the incredible Femi Oguns of Identity Agency Group, and both these young men are not about chasing celebrity… they are about skill and craft! John Boyega has one of the most incredible faces in the business, one that can carry entire scenes and a wide range of emotion without a single line of dialog. This brother was born to be a film actor… and has worked his ass off for years in obscurity. He is proof of the axiom "When preparation and opportunity meet, success is inevitable."
