DAMSON IDRIS - IDENTITY DISCOVERED! Sometimes its clear from the very beginning. I am a huge fan of Femi Ogun’s IDENTITY SCHOOL OF ACTING which he founded in London to deal with a lack of diversity on the UK’s stages and screens. After many years of waiting, this award-winning school that brought us the likes of Damson Idris is finally opening its doors in Los Angeles - now accepting applications for their first term, beginning this fall! THROWBACK BROTHERS in BLUE - MALACHI KIRBY . For today’s throwback TuTchT portraits, I give you THREE BRILLIANT BRITS in BLUE! . I take great pride in celebrating the massive careers of these three incredibly talented London-based actors. I’ve been following & promoting their work for many years - long before they became international stars. I’ve often been told I have a great eye for young talent but the simple fact is that because of the work I create, I’m ALWAYS on the hunt for talented young male actors of color, where ever they are. These three are simply among the best I’ve ever seen. . I first stumbled on 21y/o Malachi Kirby in 2011. He was making a splash on London stages, then in short films and on Brit TV. He led me to Femi Ogun’s amazing @IdentityDrama_ school - then to a young John Boyega who, the same year KILLED it in Attack the Block. In turn, to their contemporary, the young TV actor/writer Daniel Kaluuya whose work in Black Mirror that same year, blew me away. . Now, a decade later, they are well-established celebrities with continuously skyrocketing careers. But even if this shine and celebrity status hadn’t found them I would still have been foremost among their fans simply because these three gentlemen are & have been incredibly gifted actors! . One of several TuTchT joints of Malachi, I created this portrait in 2016 in the lead-up to the release of the ROOTS miniseries. I chose to present Malachi as Kunta Kinte in the style of 17th/18th century oil paintings of African Royalty. This performance remains soul-wrenching & deeply inspirational! . IDENTIFIED AT LAST!!! (PART I) If you’ve been following me for very long I’m sure you’ve heard me shouting about Femi Ogun’s Identity School of Acting in London and 2 of my favorite young black actors to emerge from this amazing school. Back when I first started dropping their names very few Americans had heard of them and I had to jump through lots of hoops just to see their UK-based work here in the States. Now household names and on the lips of Hollywood’s movers and shakers, John Boyega and Malachi Kirby have officially blown up, and Femi Oguns is FINALLY getting the shine he deserves in the British mainstream media - 14 years after lighting his candle in the darkness. (Selah) Having watched misters Kirby and Boyega grow from American obscurity to “it boys” gives me an even deeper kindred sense of brotherhood with Identity than I had before. (and helps bolster the claims I sometimes hear in my corner of the industry about my “eye for new talent.”) Even tho I definitely fit the description of “outsider,” hahaha, this report by the BBC’s Colleen Harris gave me a warm familial feeling. I got all kinda love for Mr Oguns and my Identity family! And the purpose-minded alums keep taking flight!!! I remember back when I used to shout about the jaw-dropping talents of my favorite young Brit actors like John Boyega and Malachi Kirby who were virtually unknown here in the States. How dope is it that I don’t have to say anything more than the name now? My fellow Americans finally know. In fact, the entire intergalactic population of the Universe knows. John has a string of much-buzzed-about projects coming our way soon. Next month’s “Detroit” promises to be as lit as it is timely. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” written and directed by one of my favorite Neo-Noir screenwriters, Rian Johnson, drops on Dec 15, and “Pacific Rim: Uprising” in which he stars AND produces, will follow in 2018. HAPPY BORNDAY GER DUANY I don’t pretend to understand it, but some bonds seem to be forged supernaturally. Even though I’m not a naturally gregarious person and i lack a certain social ease when connecting with strangers, an ease that others seem to have in spades, I’ve learned throughout my life that when i recognize these bonds it’s wise to embrace them, step out of my comfort zone and do everything i can to explore and strengthen them. When this instinct of “kindred spirit” hits in a particularly strong way, i feel almost accountable to the Universe to explore what can come of my intersecting purpose with this person. Whose to say what the Universe intends. More often than not, when I pursue these bonds they solidify instantly & the connection often becomes among the most productive and enduring of my journey. And yeah, about the whole “journey” thing... knowing the details of Ger Duany’s mind-blowing journey and being able to witness the milestones of his 40th year on this planet and the welcoming of his firstborn son at the same time I’m in collaboration with him on our mutual projects is a massive honor and privilege. THE WOMEN OF IDENTITY - EMMY NOMINATED LETITIA WRIGHT The bulk of my work is focused on young men of color but in thinking about a series of posts to celebrate the opening of IDENTITY SCHOOL of ACTING in Los Angeles I kept stumbling across headline entertainment news about the amazing women of Identity: both clients of Identity Agency Group and alumnae of the Identity School of Acting. I’ve made my love and respect known for Identity brothers @JohnBoyega @DamsonIdris and Malachi Kirby for many years but its time to turn the spotlight on the equally amazing ladies… starting today with the skyrocketing star (and everyone’s favorite Wakandan kid sister) Letitia Wright! This IDSA Alumna and patron of the school is clearly box office magic -- currently in 2 of the top 5 box office openings of all time! While I was editing a video of her work several months ago I saw lots of her early TV and film offerings in the UK and realized the true depth of her acting skills. I’m THRILLED that she now joins the ranks of Emmy Nominated Actors. Hope she’s got several shelves cleared in her home for the parade of accolades and awards that will continue to come her way! - Enjoy this 60 sec look at her nominated episode of “Black Mirror” entitled “Black Museum” … it was tricky but I tried to keep the spoilers this brilliantly written episode to a bare minimum for the few of you who haven’t seen it yet.
