at some point i’m going to finish a short story/anecdotes relating to this (well i told myself I could easily do it in a week... two months ago) but for now i’m just letting out some rambling thoughts about Byakuren and Shou for a while. Byakuren’s profile goes into detail about how in the past, she would take on the guise of an exterminator but secretly help youkai, and that was all in service of making sure her own powers never fade away, but over time she grew to genuinely sympathise with them. Wouldn’t it be neat if that also applied to Shou but in the opposite direction...
so there’s former human Byakuren who abandoned her convictions in order to act as a savior to youkai to fulfil her own goals, and then those old convictions come back in a new way when she starts to sincerely embrace that role. On the other side you have the youkai Shou who takes on the role of avatar of Bishamonten. There’s no canon material that goes into detail about Shou’s reasons or mindset about that, but it just makes for a really nice parallel if she too were only doing it at first just to survive and without any actual care for the prayers of humans, but then over time came to realise this was her one and only calling... In that sense, Byakuren and Shou were both pretenders, trying to turn what they thought were lies into truth...
And all things considered, they accomplished those goals since in the end, Byakuren would spend the next millenia sealed away as an evil magician, while Shou continues her duties as an idol even when her old friends are gone and people stop praying to gods too...
