      honestly, kyle would just like if jason hit him. at last he knows how to deal with the rush of adrenaline that comes after a good punch in the face. instead, jason is talking about aliens with ten rows of teeth and boy, has kyle had enough of those, but the words make a little bit of sense. he’s either on edge and jumps at everything or he doesn’t put his guard up until he’s already down and out of the count.

       constant vigilance doesn’t sound much better than the eating paranoia he feels, but at least it is more useful than it.

            “ listen, i don’t wanna turn into the same guy batman is. that might work here on earth, but that doesn’t work with aliens that can sometimes read my mind and make me embarrassed about it, so that’s a bust. ”

   “I wasn’t talking about Batman,” Jason snaps, spitting the moniker out like it’s poison. Seems like nothing has changed in that sense, even if he has cooled his jets on attacking every Bat-member on sight.

   It takes him a moment to compose himself.

   “...The point is, even if something terrible is about to happen, there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it, sitting around and bemoaning yourself like this. Not to be dramatic, I died because a psycho hit me over the head with a crowbar one too many times. You have a magic fucking ring.” Jason’s not trying to make it a case of some people have it worse, because stop right there, he had it worse, but all he had to his name were his fists at that time. “Go... go for a run or something. Sweat it out. Eat a gallon of ice cream.”

     he’s tempted to say ‘buzz off, i got combat lessons from batman’ before his brain reminds him that so did jason, jackass and he snaps his mouth shut without saying anything. his arms drop and his hands come together, fiddling with the power ring gracing his hand. a nervous habit he’d always had, even before he had the lantern ring.

           “ considering all the time i can think of just off the top of my head where that exact thing happened, yeah, i am a little scared of that. ” he drops his voice, losing the edge it normally held when dealing with jason todd of all people. “ i know it’s stupid to worry about it, but i’m always worrying about something, so might as well add onto the list. ”

   God, no one should be looking towards Jason for advice. He’s too practical, and he already died once. There’s not much that worries him.

   “Look, you want — okay, you want me to tell you an actually useful thing?” Jason asked, letting his hands fall listlessly at his side because he’s one dramatic sigh away from hitting Kyle. “Here’s the thing — you don’t worry about anything at all, ever, and then some big space alien monster with ten rows of teeth attacks you and chews you up, and you die because you weren’t expecting it. On the flipside, you worry about literally everything, all the time, too much, and this same alien comes at eats you anyway. Why? Because you’re fucking worrying about everything all the damn time.”

   He’s a little more animated now, gesturing animatedly to emphasize his point, and he’s not sure Kyle knows what kind of tirade he just unleashed.

   “You know what my teacher called it?” Jason helpfully doesn’t specify which one. “Constant vigilance. It’s like worry, only better. Worry makes you lose focus. Vigilance doesn’t.”
