Torii Gates Nestled Within the Urbanscape・下谷神社の鳥居:町内の景観に溶け込む歴史の象徴
The large vermilion torii gate is the primary gate marking the main pathway (now an urban street) to a Shinto shrine.
The secondary torii, which is much smaller and made of either stone or concrete, stands at entrance of the shrine’s courtyard. Just beyond the torii is a yakuimon gate with a gabled roof. Behind this gate is the Shitaya Shrine——a local Shinto shrine with origins tracing back to the year 730, making it one of the oldest inari shrines in Tokyo.

📍 Sanuki Kokubunji (讃岐国分寺), Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture
Sanuki Kokubunji is Temple 80 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It’s located in Takamatsu, the capital of Kagawa Prefecture. This area was once home to the old provincial temple system of Japan.
These photos show some of the temple’s key features, including statues, shrines, and symbolic gates. One statue is Fudō Myōō, the fierce guardian with sword and rope, framed by swirling flames. Another image shows a happy, round-bellied Hotei statue—one of the Seven Lucky Gods. You’ll also see a red torii gate, part of a smaller shrine within the temple grounds.
The golden figure of Kōbō Daishi reminds us this whole pilgrimage honors his memory. The bright red torii marks a sacred space, often linked with Shinto shrines. Butsuzō (Buddhist statues) like Juichimen Kannon, the main deity here, offer peace to those who stop and pray.

This peaceful scene comes from Sakaide in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. It’s home to Tennoji—temple 79 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The temple sits just inland from the Seto Inland Sea and offers quiet moments beneath pine trees and tiled rooftops.
The photos show the temple grounds with carefully pruned pine trees, traditional wooden halls, and stone lanterns. There’s a red torii gate at the front, which leads visitors along a stone path to the main hall. The neat garden and layered pines give the place a meditative feel.
That red gate is a torii, which marks the entrance to a sacred area—often Shinto but sometimes also found near Buddhist sites. Inside, the main object of worship here is Juichimen Kannon—the Eleven-Faced Bodhisattva of Compassion.
If these calm temple views speak to you, you’ll find more on my Linktree: 🌐 https://linktr.ee/shikoku4k
