This past Family Day long weekend I went to Niagara Falls 🇨🇦 with my youngest daughter to enjoy some time away from home and meet up with Taku photography and his community for the Niagara Falls Sunrise Meet. We had a blast and met some really wonderful photographers and made some new friends (listed below). In the evening we enjoyed dinner and a beautiful fireworks display over the falls. In the morning despite it being cloudy we all got up super early to catch some pictures in the pre-dawn sky. The meet-up ended with a wonderful pancake breakfast. Thanks for planning this Taku!! When you do a long exposure during an active Lake Ontario, the waves quickly disappear along the shores, creating a faint edge along the rocks making for a painterly look to the water. . This was more than just a sunrise when I took this last year. Upon arrival I heard the calls of several gulls out in Lake Ontario. I couldn’t see any of them in the dark until some started flying off the lake. Soon after hundreds more followed, flying chaotically all above the surface of the lake, right in front of the city skyline. . What a morning it was. . I love this time of year when a variety of water fowl come together in Lake Ontario to find their soul mates. . Looking into the divide. . Saw this little guy swimming across the divide, crossing where the sunlight reflection started on the lake. . Even though I still see snow in my yard, I know Spring has sprung when the waterfowl have started returning to the shores of Lake Ontario. I caught this merganser really, really, really far away but it’s the sun that took me by surprise as it rose from the horizon. It looked like the orange sky was burning the sun with its flame-like pattern eating into the sun. (it was just clouds in front of the sun, but that doesn’t sound very exciting) . The Niagara Falls Sunrise Meetup is this Sunday at 6:30am! Meet at Table Rock where you can set up to shoot the sunrise. . The weather—which can still change—calls for no precipitation but clouds. . Don’t forget to bring a variety of lenses to shake things up a bit. A telephoto lens will allow you to get closer to the falls, giving you more creative opportunities in colour and textures.
