probably the most annoying misconception about cats to me is that female ginger cats are rare
the confusion likely comes from the fact that Red is a sex-linked gene; it only passes down on X. male cats only have one X to give, so there's less choice on the sire's side (and no choice if the kitten is male, as they need to inherit Y from dad, so they have to get the actual colour gene from mum). so, people hear that both parents need to have red to get a fully red female kitten, which totally means its rare, right?
nope. because it goes the other way too. both parents need to have non-red to get a fully non-red kitten.

the charts above show the combinations you can get with the O locus (the red locus), the first being for a female kitten and the second being for a male. dams on the left have two possible alleles they can pass down, so they get written down twice. sires on the top only have one possible allele to pass down, so they only need to be written down once. which allele theyre passing down is underlined in blue
capital O holds red, and little o holds not-red. an OO or Oy cat is fully red, an oo or oy cat is fully non-red, and an Oo cat is both and therefore tortoiseshell. the results have been coloured for viewing ease
it's a 1/4 chance for a molly to be red, and crucially, it's also a 1/4 chance for it not NOT be red. 1/2 chance of both (tortoiseshell)
it's a 1/2 chance for a tom to be red, and a 1/2 chance for it to not be red. toms cant be tortoiseshell
i hope this helps visualise the probabilties better
tldr. ginger female cats are not any more rare than black female cats are.
(also because i may as well. there is no link between coat colours and personality or intelligence. gingers arent inherently dumb, and torties arent inherently bitchy. ik with the ginger one its (usually) a joke, but the tortie one is usually said in earnest. dumbasses inventing both cat misogyny and cat racism in one go smh)
#cat genetics#the blue eyes white (dragon) cat deafness thing is also annoying but at least theres a basis of truth in it#also primordial pouches are not just for mollies. i have no idea where that one came from.#another one: torties and calicos are the same thing. calico is just a fun term for a tortoiseshell with high white

Dilute tortoiseshell longhair with high white spotting (tricolor pattern is harlequin/magpie)
hello tumblings. i introduce to you, my feral self claimed daughter (i do NOT own this girl), vienne sausage :)

context under cut
vienne sausage (i affectionately call her vienners) is a weird little feral (?*) cat ive been seeing around my neighborhood since mid 2023
* assuming shes feral because shes been out here for nearly 2 years, potentially more. if someone DID own her they wouldve claimed her by now. no sane owner leaves a cat out for two years. also no sane owner would let a weird teenage dude outside (me) feed and cuddle their cat for two years straight >.>
also ferals tend to look much cleaner and healthier than strays because theyre used to being outside. viennes been out here for 2 years, if she was stray, she wouldnt have survival instincts and would be dead by now.
shes very friendly btw and just runs up to me. she lets me give her bellyrubs even (and cats normally wont do that)
i diagnose her w cute little dilute calico coat. (99% sure shes dilute, i aint tweaking.)
she has no tabby markings anywhere.,. pure calico kitty
all these photos were taken yesterday while i was chilling outside btw. ironic timing as i was legit drawing vienne on my porch and she just meowed and walked up lol

various greek strays for you to identify

thank you so much oh my god I love them <3333
black self
black tortoiseshell mackerel tabby, low white spotting
red mackerel tabby
blue self, medium white spotting
lilac (?) mackerel tabby, high white spotting
blue tortoiseshell, medium white spotting
red classic tabby
black mackerel tabby, high white spotting
#number 1 possibly has low white spotting (white hairs on chest) but not enough to call it a result of the actual ws gene I think#number 5 is interesting! can't tell for sure; but it's definitely not a black tabby. warmer toned; so I went with lilac; but could be blue.#8 is possibly black silver tabby but i can't know for sure because it's got so much white lol. & mackerel tabby is a guess; because#classic tabbies have wider tail stripes; so mackerel tabby is a good guess; i think#black self#black tortoiseshell mackerel tabby low white#red mackerel tabby#blue self mid white#lilac (?) mackerel tabby high white#blue tortoiseshell mid white#red classic tabby#black mackerel tabby high white#IDing cat phenotypes#cat genetics#asks#monochrome-sunsets#thank you so much this is was so fun

this is vienne sausage. shes a feral cat that lives around my house and pesters (/aff) me whenever i go outside and shes longhaired and beautiful.

self hypothesis: dilute black (blue) tortoiseshell w high white spotting. correct? (using whatcoloristhatcat terms,,)
she has not a single tabby marking visible on her blue NOR red patches btw. totally solid patching
I am sorry but i disagre! for, you see
the high white can make it hard to see though, so I understand!
anyway, I reckon she's a blue classic tabby tortoiseshell with high white spotting! most beautiful baby....

My fiancé’s cat, luna ! We know she is a Norwegian forest cat mixed with Persian of some kind, but we wanted to know what coat she has : )
She is a total sweetums and her coat has a cool variety of patterns at certain angles- like one pattern looks like a skull, and the other from another angle is a heart !
she’s a black tortoiseshell with high white spotting (calico)!

Her fosters suspected that she has some tabby in her because of the pattern on her head.
blue tabby tortoiseshell with high white of ... some kind!
im going to go with classic tabby because this can look solid in high white patterns like this :)

This is my stinky asshole baby, Jade. She's 13 and I love her more than anything in the world. I would love to know her phenotype!

Plus the needle-felted miniature one that my friend made me for Christmas a couple years back
A lovely silver (black) tortoiseshell mackerel(?) tabby with high white! It's harder to see the tabby type, so I may edit this post later on with corrections.
