I am SO BLESSED! I am once again pregnant! Little Natan is only 7 months, so this is the closest gap between pregnancies I've had. Me and Jonah had an idea that this time we should ask y'all what you think we're having (and you better answer because I got me and the kids into special outfits for this 🤣)! So...

RUGEN FUERTE!!
Ronda Divisional Conferencia Nacional
(1) San Francisco vs. Green Bay (7)
(3) Detroit vs. Tampa Bay (4) / Philadelphia (5)

NFL Week 1
Wowww!!! What a weekend. The 2023 NFL season didn't disappoint in its first week back in action. Everybody who tunes in knows my affinity and affection for the wideouts. Last year we witnessed the dominant performance of 4th year pro Justin Jefferson. Who continues to prove his case of why he’s the top wideout in the National Football League. Jefferson was the Wideouts4Life 2022 Wideout of the year after finishing the year with 1,809 yards on 128 catches for 8 touchdowns. I’ll dissect his game as the year goes on but one area I would like to see improve is his scoring.
Jefferson picked up right where he left off. He started off plucking a high thrown slant out the air and making a defender miss as he stretched out for a Vikings first down. The self proclaimed best wideout in the league finished the day with 9 catches for 150 yards without scoring.
Tumblr media
The WOW(wideout of the week) goes to the most exciting player in the NFL…Tyreek Hill otherwise known as “Cheetah.” The mercurial wideout bedazzled from the outset of the game. Hill opened the game with a 30-yard speed dig where he left the corner’s head spinning. His next catch would come on a stutter-stab press release, for a 35-yard touchdown. Hill’s last catch was a quick fade at the 5-yard line for his 2nd tub of the day. Tyreek Hill finished the day with 10 catches, 215 yards, and 2 touchdowns.
Tumblr media
Brandon Aiyuk had a productive first game of the year with a perfect 8 targets for 8 catches, 129 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Had Tyreek not did what he did Aiyuk would’ve taken home the wideout of the week award. Aiyuk’s first score came by way of a skinny post in the redzone. Then on a perfectly thrown fade ball from Brock Purdy, Aiyuk fought through the hold to snag his second touchdown of the year. I look forward to watching the 49ers and their physical brand of football.
Tumblr media
The Los Angeles Rams opened the season without their top wideout Cooper Kupp due to a hamstring injury. However that didn’t stop the Rams from beating the Seattle Seahawks and having two wideouts reach the century mark.
Rookie Puka Nacua who I have never heard of had one hell of a game in my opinion. His first opportunity was a 5-yard in route thrown slightly behind him causing him to drop the ball(not his fault). Nacua wouldn’t let that drop deter him. Puka caught 10 of his next 14 passes with one drop and a few bad throws by Matthew Stafford. The rookie sensation ended the afternoon with 119 yards helping his team to their first win of the season.
Tumblr media
With an exact yardage output as his counterpart. Third year wideout Tutu Atwell did his part by catching 6 of 8 targets for 119 yards but no score. Atwell is a speedster out of Louisville and the Rams deep threat. Although he didn’t make the few plays called for him I look forward to Atwell adding pressure on opposing defenses all year.
Tumblr media
Chris Olave is a wideout I’m really beginning to love watching. The kid is supremely talented and I see why he’s doing what he does. Olave runs effortlessly and is really smooth in his route running. The uber talented wideout caught the ball all over the field. But I was really impressed by a comeback route he caught for an 8-yard gain; where he toe-tapped maintaining his concentration and completing the catch. He finished the afternoon with 112 yards by way of 8 receptions and no scores.
Tumblr media
One guy who’s name was in the media all summer came out with something to prove in the Bills lost to the New York Jets. Stefon Diggs in my opinion is still a top-10 wideout. At times and I won’t lie…I’m beginning to feel his place among the games best is starting to slip. This isn’t his fault. Bills quarterback Josh Allen is horrendous and always makes the crucial mistake.
The New York Jets lost their play caller and future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers on the fourth play of the game. Most people thought the game was over until Josh Allen threw the Jets 3-interceptions and lost a fumble. Despite Diggs catching 10 passes for 102 yards with a touchdown; his team lost. As a former wideout and coach, I think Diggs knows Allen isn’t the guy to take the team where it needs to be and his frustrations are about winning not just stats.
Tumblr media
Last but certainly not least is Jacksonville’s newest addition and University of Alabama alum Calvin Ridley. Suspended for a year for betting on sports, Ridley showed NFL fans what we have been missing while he served his year’s long suspension. Ridley is a natural in all phases of wideout play. He’s a natural hands catcher and a smooth route runner. Ridley also has the run after catch ability to turn a 12-yard curl into a 45 yard gain as he did against the Colts. I look forward to the young wideout continuing to improve from week to week and excited that he’s back!

Sorry for the late post, but I will do better in having this blog for year 2 posted before the Thursday Night football game. Coach Chess

The Broncos have waived/released/cut CB Michael Ojemudia #13 and RB Devine Ozigbo #36.
The Broncos have placed TE Greg Dulcich #80 on injured reserve.
Outlook
The Broncos could lose all of their division this season. Overall Kansas City is averaging 29 points per game, while the Broncos average 15. In divisional play KC is averaging 31 points per game, while Denver averages 21. Both defenses give up 27 points per game in the division.
Over the last month the Broncos offense has been averaging 19 points per game. If you look back on the last three games and throw out the blowout game last week, the Broncos averaged 26 points per game on offense and the defense only gave up 25 points per game.
In the first match up, Denver trailed 27-0 and then Mahomes started to turn the ball over and which led to 28 Denver points. That was Denver's best offensive output of the season. It will be interesting to see how Denver has adjusted and if those adjustments make any difference in the outcome.

Oh 100% lol. I'll see your 'long instagram caption which focuses only on Jill being a grandma' and raise you 'Jill makes a long speech at the actual shower about being a grandma'.
Also I'm betting there will be video of both Jill and Nurie crying, if not all of the older girls also.

Marry Me ~Drew Starkey~
Tumblr media
summary: y/n and drew. an inseparable duo. they grew up thinking nothing could come between them. but when they turned 24, they were definitely mistaken.
word count: 2.8k
pairings: drew x reader
warnings: angst
a/n: mostly told in 3rd person with bits of Drew’s POV. based off of this song! this gif will be drew before the wedding, just saying. italics are flashbacks!
masterlist
At 8 years old, Drew was trusted to wander the neighborhood alone. He went to the park and saw a girl dressed in a tutu, dancing barefoot in the sandbox. When he approached her, he startled her. She stopped dancing and turned to face him.
“Hi.” her smile was the most friendly thing Drew had ever seen. It was the first time he’d met someone who didn’t scare him.
“Hi.” he waved and kicked the sand below his foot.
“What brings you here?”
“Got bored at home and needed a new adventure.” he shrugged in response, hoping to get the girls name without asking.
“ME too.” she smiled. “What’s your name, stranger?”
“D-drew.” he looked up and noticed a quizzical look upon her face.
“I like it.” she smiled and held out her hand. “I”m y/n.”
“y/n?” he raised an eyebrow and looked at her.
Suddenly becoming insecure of her name, she stepped back., letting go of his hand. “My p-parents liked the name.”
“I like it too.” he smiled and sat on the edge of the sandbox. y/n stood in front of him with an outstretched hand.
“Come on. You wanted an adventure and an adventure, you will get.” she offered him the kind smile she greeted him with. He knew that this new found friendship would last a long time.
------------------------
All through life, y/n & drew were inseparable. In high school, they were always mistaken for a couple, and at the time, neither of them realized just how much they acted like one.
It wasn’t until one night, during one of  Drew’s football games, that one of them started noticing.
The game was nearing the end and Drew had yet to spot y/n in the crowd. She wasn’t in her usual spot in the stands and he was starting to get worried that something had happened to her.
He was the quarterback though, so he couldn’t let that shake his focus. He looked back into the team huddle as they went over the plays. They broke apart seconds later and got in their starting positions. Drew called out some plays and was handed the ball. Just as he was about to throw it, he caught sight of her. She waved at him and he was almost hypnotized. It took y/n screaming his name to make him come to his senses.
“Drew!” she shouted and nodded her head to the left. The other teams players were running towards him so he made a quick pass to the wide receiver on the left. The guy caught the ball and ran it in for a touchdown. That was it. They had won the game. Drew and the guy who made the touchdown were suddenly lifted into the air and everyone started chanting.
Y/n waited by Drew’s car for him to come out, like she always did. And when she spotted him, she ran full force into him. If he hadn’t seen her already, he would’ve been knocked down. But he caught her and spun her around.
After they got in his car, they drove to the diner to celebrate with the team. Y/n and Drew sat in their favorite, and most frequented, booth and ordered their usual celebratory meal. Burgers, fries and a shake.
“Where were you? I was getting so worried.” Drew smiled as he stole her fries. She smacked his hand and giggled.
“I had to wait for Dennis to pick me up.”
“Wh-who’s Dennis?”
“He’s my new neighbor. Just moved in a few days ago. He offered to drop me off at the game and he was running late.”
“If you wanted to, you could’ve gotten a ride with me.”
“I know. But I wanted to give you some space before the big game.” she smiled and looked at him. “I didn’t want to distract you right before you went out on the field.”
“You’re my good luck charm. You could never distract me.” he held her hand and looked out the window at their friends, who were goofing off in the parking lot. “You have no idea how lucky I am to have you in my life.”
“I was thinking the same thing.” she smiled and before either of them knew, they both started leaning in. Their lips were only an inch or two apart when they were interrupted by some guy banging on the window beside Drew. “Dennis!” she smiled and ran out to greet the guy. As she slapped his arm for scaring her, he chuckled and wrapped her up in a hug.
Drew instantly felt insecure and he wasn’t sure why.
This Dennis guy looked like he came out of an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog, the very type of guy that y/n would fall for. As Drew looked on at the two outside, he didn’t feel hungry anymore so he stood up, paid the bill, and left the diner.
For the next year or so, he distanced himself from y/n. He couldn’t stand to hear her talk about how great another guy was, right in front of him. The night at the diner made Drew realize that the only reason he suddenly felt jealous, was because he was in love with her.
2 years after the championship game, he got an envelope in the mail. It was addressed to him and it was from y/n. Wondering what she wanted, he quickly opened the envelope. But when he did, his heart dropped. Inside was a wedding invitation to Dennis & Y/n’s wedding.
It was surprising to him that he had even received the invitation in the first place, since he had been blowing her off for the better part of 2 years. He didn’t want to go to the wedding, but he knew if he didn’t, he’d regret it.
So the day of the wedding, he showed up. His tux was the same one he wore to prom. The exact same one that he knew y/n would love. The one she did love when she saw him in it that night.
It was killing him, these thoughts he was having. He had contemplated his plan and changed the details many times. His original plan was to show up and actually watch the girl he loved get married to the man he was incredibly jealous of. Then, he changed the plan to leaving halfway through. The plan changed 4 more times after that.
And here he was now, getting ready to try out his final plan. He wanted to go see her and he hoped that once she saw him, she’d give up on Dennis and run away with him.
But as he approached the room where she was getting ready, he heard her talking to her friends. He stopped and listened to them.
“You look so great in that dress.”
“You really do, sweetie.”
“Thanks, mom.” she smiled and kissed her moms cheek. Her sister and her 2 best friends sat next to each other on the couch.
“Dennis is a lucky man, sis.”
“I’m even luckier.” she smiled happily. “I love him so much.”
When Drew heard those words come from her mouth, he made one final decision. He went back to the gift table, set the box down gently & walked away. He could not stay and watch her marry Dennis. It would break his heart knowing that he could’ve been the one up at the altar with her, had he actually told her how he felt before Dennis entered the picture.
If he had stayed outside of her room just a minute longer, he would’ve heard something amazing during the conversation. Something he would’ve enjoyed hearing.
“Is Drew coming today?” y/n asked her friends.
“You know, I’ve always hoped it was going to be you and Drew doing this.” her mom smiled and shook her head. Y/n’s sister looked at her as well.
“Me too.”
“Yeah. I thought the same thing but, Drew never made a move. It would’ve been nice to be marrying him, but Dennis is a great guy and he treats me well.” y/n smoothed out the front of her dress and turned. “I made the right choice, right?”
“That’s up to you to decide, sweetie.” her mom looked over at her children and smiled.
“5 minutes, ladies.” y/n’s dad walked into the room and nearly bawled his eyes out. “Awww. My baby looks so beautiful.”
“Oh, dad. You’re gonna make me cry.” y/n grinned and followed the group out of the room.
“Dennis is going to lose his mind when he sees you.”
“That’s the plan, dad.”
Y/n watched her friends walk down the aisle and when it was her turn, she grabbed her dad’s arm and walked with him. Her eyes searched the crowd for the blue eyes she cared about. Despite what he has been doing to her for years, she wanted nothing more than to see him sitting in the spot she reserved for him.
When here eyes didn’t find his, she started getting nervous. His eye contact was the only thing that truly calmed her down and she didn’t have it right now. She had thought that he had taken the last second to have a bathroom break but after 15 minutes, she realized he wasn’t coming.
She was so caught up in her own thoughts that she didn’t realize that the ceremony was almost over.
“IF anyone can think of any reason these two should not be wed, speak now or forever hold your peace.” the minister read from his book.
When nobody stood up to object, y/n felt a knot in her stomach. Part of her had hoped that maybe Drew would stand up and tell her that she was making a mistake and that she should be with him. Unfortunately, he was nowhere around.
“Now, do you Dennis Christopher Mixon, take Y/F/N to be your lawfully wedded wife?”
“I do.” Dennis smiled.
“And do you, Y/F/N, take Dennis Christoper Mixon, to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
The entire crowd looked at her, anticipating her answer. Her dad knew what she was thinking and he gave her a small nod.
~Drew’s POV~
After I left the wedding venue, I went to the diner I spent all my free time at. The cook began making me a meal as soon as he saw me and the owner sat with me.
“What’s up, Drew? Shouldn’t you be at y/n’s wedding?”
“He’s not there because it’s not him she’s marrying.” the cook smiled as he served me. Mrs Marden let out a chuckle.
“Is that true, honey? Are you upset because it’s not you?”
“I couldn’t sit there and watch her say she loves him. She shouldn’t be with him and I should’ve said how I felt from the beginning.”
“You know, the both of us have seen the two of you grow up & we thought that it’d for sure be the two of you sharing the rest of your lives together.” Devyn smiled sympathetically as he sat with us.
“I wish it was me.” I looked down at my watch and undid my tie when I noticed the time. “But it’s too late now. The ceremony is probably over by now and she’s now Mrs Mixon. I missed my chance.” I sighed and threw my head back. I didn’t notice the two of them gaze out the window and share a look.
“It might not be too late, Drew.” Mrs Marden nudged my shoulder and walked away. Devyn followed her as they went to the kitchen. I took a quick look out the window, then back at my plate.
“Wait a second.” I mumbled to myself and looked back out the window. Y/n was walking up to the diner in her wedding dress. Tears were flowing down her face as she stopped and locked eyes with me through the window. She shrugged and started crying again.
I got up and ran out to her, immediately pulling her into a hug.
“Shouldn’t you be on your honeymoon right about now?”
“I couldn’t do it.”
“What?”
“I couldn’t marry Dennis.” she sobbed into my chest. “Everyone looked so disappointed as I ran out. I think I broke Dennis’ heart. That’s not what I do. I’m not a heartbreaker. Oh my god. I feel so ashamed.”
“Hey, you did what you thought was right for your heart. I don’t think anyone can be mad at you for that. You knew being with Dennis wasn’t right, so you left.”
“Our parents spent so much money on the wedding and they’re gonna be so mad.” she continued to sob, obviously ignoring what I had just said. I grabbed her shoulders and pushed her back a little.
“Look at me, okay? Nobody could ever be mad at you. And if they are, it’ll only be briefly. Like I said, you followed your heart and did what was gonna benefit you. That’s all that matters, y/n/n.” I looked down at her and noticed her eyes were closed. “You’re my best friend and I’m so sorry I’ve been pushing away all these years.”
Was this finally the time I was able to tell her? Nah, I couldn’t She just ran our on her wedding. It just wouldn’t be right. If she even reciprocated the feelings, I didn’t want to be a rebound. So I kept my feelings buried for now.
“I realized that I didn’t love Dennis as much as I had led myself to believe.” she sniffled and rubbed her eyes. The mascara came off on her hands and she looked at me. I nodded and she rubbed her hands on my tux. Thankfully, it was black and wouldn’t show much. “Truthfully, I fell in love when I was 8 & I’ve never gotten over it. Marrying Dennis wouldn’t have been fair to either party involved.”
“You fell in love when you were 8?” was this the moment? “What a coincidence. I fell in love when I was 8 too.”
“Oh, did you really?”
“Yeah. With this goofy girl who danced barefoot in the sandbox while wearing a bright pink tutu.” I smiled and rubbed her shoulder. “She was quite the style icon back then.”
“Sounds like a complete dork.” she laughed.
“Oh, she was. But that dork became my best friend so quickly. Guess I was just attracted to the ‘dork’ lifestyle back then.”
“You’re telling me.” she smirked, “Remember when you dated Lilah because your friends dared you to?”
“Ugh. Don’t remind me.”
“And then there was Lisa. And Lauren. And the other Lisa. Oh. There was also Lindsey.” she counted off all my ex-girlfriends on her fingers. “Wow. Lot’s of L names, huh?”
“It was my favorite letter.”
“Ah, I see.” she nodded and stared at her feet. Her shoes were now in her hands and she was swinging them. “You know I love you, right?”
“Yeah. And I love you too.” I joked, knowing exactly what she meant. But my tone didn’t come across how I wanted it.
“The kid I was talking about, the one I fell in love with when I was 8, was you.”
“Oh, really? I wouldn’t have ever guessed that.”
“Drew, I’m trying to be serious for a second here. Can you just let me talk, please?”
“Of course. Go ahead.” I smiled and she stood in front of me.
“I’m in love with you, Drew Starkey. And if you’ll let me, I plan on never stopping.”
“I’m in love with you too.” I looked at the girl and when I saw the look in her eyes, I panicked. “But-”
“But? There should be no but.”
“I can’t be a rebound.”
“If anything, Dennis was the rebound from you, dude.” she grabbed my face and made me look in her eyes. “Tell me right now that you don’t want to be with me and I’ll walk away. Look me in the eyes and tell me that’s what you want.”
“I....” I looked into her eyes and all of our memories came flooding back to me. “I can’t do that.”
“Thank god, because I wouldn’t have walked away.” she giggled and kissed my nose, something we used to do to calm each other down & keep each other grounded. “So, is this what you want? A hot mess in a wedding dress?”
“Hey, as long as the hot mess is you, I’m cool with it.” I pulled her closer and rested my forehead against hers. “I’m all in.”
“Hmmm...Good.” she smiled and closed the gap between us. It may have taken nearly 15 years but I finally got what I wanted since I was 8. And like it was magic, she was 8 and wearing her tutu while I was wearing my power rangers t-shirt.
Life couldn’t get any better.

Gender reveal parties are a form of desperate social control
Tumblr media
«[A gender reveal party is] a surprise party designed to eliminate surprises, to set expectations and assumptions and boundaries, to create a kind of reductive certainty where there was once nothing but uncertainty.»
Anyone who has noticed that the world does not divide, neatly and comfortably, into guns and glitter, touchdowns and tutus, will know that this whole [gender reveal] ritual is set up, like a Jenga tower, for the fall.
Great article by Carina Chocano over at The New York Times.
Photo shows explosion at border agent’s gender reveal party that sparked Arizona wildfire which burned 47,000 acres, caused $8.2 million in damage and took nearly 800 firefighters to extinguish. I like the way the explosion recreates the colors of the transgender flag.

You know what, can we take a moment to appreciate the Try Guys? I mean beyond the literal hours of entertainment that they provide, they are just so good? They blithely ignore/destroy so much toxic masculinity bullshit? Like, they all loudly adore tiny animals. They call each other cute and compliment each other constantly; Ned’s gotten ‘dat ass tho’ comments from all of them, with nary a “no homo” in sight. Ned loves his wife more than anything in the world, even a boat full of Italian babies, and makes sure everyone knows it. He never once does the ‘oh yeah, the old ball and chain’ bullshit, and none of the other Try Guys give him shit about being “whipped” or whatever. (They do give him shit about how often he talks about his wife, which honestly is fair; I think there are only about three videos out of 100+ when he doesn’t mention Ariel at some point. There are literal montages on YouTube of Ned going ‘my wife.’ Get you someone who loves you as much as Ned Fulmer loves his wife.)
You want more examples? They went skiing at one point, which Keith had never done before, and the other three coached him through a simple turn and cheered for him like he caught the winning touchdown in the Superbowl when he pulled it off. They tried ballet and every one of them was a. in awe of what the dancers could do and b. SO PUMPED to try on tutus. They had to climb a rock wall, something that Keith was very nervous about, and no one called him a p*ssy or told him to ‘man up’; instead, Ned and Zach called down encouragement from the top of the cliff while Eugene (who was climbing with him) gave him pointers on footholds/handholds and sang their hiking song to encourage him and try to help him relax. When they did a lie detector episode, Ned asked Eugene if he knew how much they cared about him, and Eugene said no. The guy administering the lie detector test said he was telling the truth, and Keith’s immediate response was ‘we gotta be better about that.’ Ned, Eugene, and Zach were groomsmen in Keith’s wedding, and I think they all cried during the ceremony. They recently threw Ned and Ariel a baby shower and got SO into it. These boys? Are so supportive of each other?
And that’s not even touching on their efforts re: destigmatizing/calling attention to health issues for men. They went to a therapy session together and talked about their insecurities and the issues they had with each other openly and respectfully, without ever going ‘this shit is for p*ssies.’ They got prostate exams and spoke to a doctor about risk factors. They got their sperm counts tested and raised the point of how fertility issues aren’t just something women face, and discussed the issue of how masculinity is seen as being tied to the ability to procreate (and what bullshit that is). They went bald for a day and talked about how that affects men’s self-esteem and sense of masculinity/identity as well. They got Photoshopped to match current media standards for men and talked about their insecurities related to that, and then, based on the massive response, got Photoshopped to the insane standards that women are held to in media, and talked about how ridiculous and damaging they are.
Look, I just love these four hot messes a lot. The Try Guys are a national treasure and I will fight anyone for them.

What’s Wrong with Gender Reveal Parties?
“Hi. My daughter is married to another woman, and has been out for many years. We’ve gone on our own journey with me learning more about what it means to be bisexual, and I have learned a lot. I love her and her wife deeply. Her wife is newly pregnant (so exciting!!!), and they insist on not finding out the gender of the baby before the birth. We got in a heated discussion when I brought this up and explained how so many of her cousins had done adorable gender reveals at their showers. I’m just so confused about it all, and I can’t understand why them being in a same-sex marriage has anything to do with getting so upset about the gender of their baby!!”
Question Submitted Anonymously Answered by El Sanchez
El Says:
Congrats on the upcoming arrival of your grandchild! First and foremost, it’s always important to remind yourself that while it’s exciting to be a grandparent, the parents are the ones that ultimately make all the decisions regarding how they will give birth to and raise their little ones. I’m sure this is something you already know, but it’s important to be reminded as new arrivals in the family can make everyone feel a little protective and on edge. I recently had a new baby myself (my very first!) and I also did not know the gender of my child prior to birth. There are many reasons parents do this: some want the surprise of the doctor’s birth assignment saved until that very moment, while others choose not to determine gender in this way at all. I can’t say exactly what your daughter’s reasoning is, of course, but I can explain my own—and why knowing the baby’s gender at this stage is impossible anyhow. Before we continue, if you’re not already familiar with gender identities like transgender and non-binary, I really recommend clicking on the links to read our Defining pieces on them!
It’s unfortunately commonplace in many medical fields for doctors to assign a gender to a newborn baby based on the type of genitals that baby has, i.e. penis = boy, vagina = girl. The fact of the matter is, many biologists, psychologists, and anthropologists would tell you this practice has proved to be inaccurate. The fact that transgender folx (like myself) exist is proof that this method is invalid.
Genitalia does not determine gender, because gender, unlike genitalia, is not actually biological. Our sex chromosomes are biological, as are our reproductive systems and genitalia, but the idea of assigning identities such as “man” or “woman” to those characteristics is not based in biology. Gender is a social construct, meaning it is something created by people in order to label each other more easily, as well as categorize the differences between each other. Not only that, but since gender is something we as humans created, our understanding of it is constantly both expanding and evolving, just like we are. These days, many members of the scientific community see gender on a spectrum that is not limited to “man” and “woman.” There are also gender non-binary folx like me who are neither. Basically, gender expansive folx and others who recognize this are just waiting for social acceptance to catch up with the science.
What it boils down to is this: there is no way of determining the gender of your grandchild before they determine it for themselves. Sometimes people know their sexuality and gender identity early on, but for others, it takes some time to figure out those identities for themselves. Just like their sexuality is going to be something they tell you, rather than you assigning it to them, their gender identity will be the same.
Most parents choose to go with the gender assigned at birth as they raise their child, and in some cases this works just fine. However, there are many cases in which children are assigned an incorrect gender at birth. This is what happens to most trans folx, and may cause gender dysphoria or other painful experiences. As someone who was assigned the incorrect gender at birth myself, I can tell you, growing up being forced into pretending you’re something you’re not is extremely painful and can lead to much mental anguish. The good news is that these experiences can be avoided to a large degree if you allow children to simply be who they are. I don’t blame my parents for raising me as the gender they were told I was, rather than the gender identity I am. At the time, they didn’t have access to information that told them there were other possibilities (such as My Kid Is Gay!), and since being non-binary was a concept none of us were familiar with, we weren’t able to understand the root of much of my depression and anxiety until I was an adult. Now that I am a parent, I have an understanding of this experience and access to information my parents didn’t, therefore I want to make sure my children can benefit from that knowledge and possibly avoid some of the pain I experienced. This is why I have chosen (along with a large number of new parents in recent years) to use gender neutral pronouns with my newborn until they are old enough to communicate to me what gender identity they are. As I see it, they are the only one that truly knows that information and rightfully deserve input in defining who they are.
It’s also important to note that “gender reveal” parties, while they’ve surged in popularity amongst cisgender folks in recent years, are actually a pretty outdated and transphobic practice—not only because they assume that gender is determined by genitalia, which directly erases the existence of transgender folx, but also because they often rely on pretty inaccurate depictions of gender and overwhelming amounts of gender stereotypes! For example, a quick Google image search of “gender reveal party” will pop up pictures of invitations with themes like “touchdowns or tutus,” “lashes or mustaches,” “rifles or ruffles” and even party favors that include bowls of candy labeled “Nuts?” or “No nuts?” Yikes! When you think about it, a “gender reveal” party is essentially an entire party celebrating whether an unborn baby has a penis or a vagina and/or how that penis or vagina will determine a person’s likes or dislikes—and that’s kind of weird!
Lastly, touching on your question about how your daughter’s sexuality plays into this: her marginalized status as a queer person can absolutely correlate to gender politics. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, she may very well care about issues affecting transgender folx, leading her to advocate for transgender issues (which should make you all the more proud of her!). Alternatively, her own sexuality may have nothing to do with this decision at all! Either way, it sounds like she and her wife are going to make awesome parents!
