Can we talk about Kasia Niewiadoma for a moment? Her second-place finish at Tour of Flanders was heartbreaking for her fans, who are longing to see her atop the podium of a road race again. When Shirin van Androoij and Elisa Longo Borghini made the final move, only Niewiadoma was strong enough to answer. Does she contribute more than she should in groups like this? Maybe, but we love to see her fight, and her participation in the group of three was what guaranteed cooperation and set the podium. Any race she is in is more exciting as a result.
And if you need to see her winning again, just remind yourself that she's the reining gravel champ!

Van Aert has won 46 races as a professional, including an enviable litany of Classics: Milan-San Remo, Strade Bianche, Gent-Wevelgem, E3 Saxo Classic (twice), Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne. The races he covets above all others are the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix but his relationship with those events has been an ill-fated one. “The Ronde and Roubaix: they are beginning to seem a bit doomed for Wout van Aert,” was how Thursday morning’s edition of Het Laatste Nieuws put it.
I'm starting to wonder if he's being punished for committing some heinous crime in a past life, such has been his run of bad luck.

Belated 2025 Spring Classics Review
With grand tour season already upon us I realised that I had been neglecting Fendrien and that posts of an analytical nature had been few and far between. With that in mind, I wanted to try and summarise the 2025 spring classics in 400ish words. Opening weekend was a fairly low key to be honest. Stefan Kung trying to win het Nieuwsblad was the highlight with the will he won’t he chase into the…

View from the belfry tower of Ypres (Ieper), with the tower of the Saint-Martin's Cathedral in the distance.
A belfry or hall tower is a medieval watchtower with a storm bell. More generally, 'belfry' refers to an urban tower in the Southern Netherlands (read: Belgium and Northern France). This type of tower was often built on or attached to a town hall or commercial cloth hall and was the place where the city bells were hung. A group of 56 belfries in Belgium and France are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In the 13th century, the city of Ypres, as a testament to its power and wealth, built its public buildings in stone. And she does so with ambition: the Ypres cloth hall and the belfry are, at that time, one of the most impressive civil buildings in Europe! The Cloth Halls served as a covered sales and storage place for cloth on the (now arched) waterway, the Ieperlee. Construction of the halls was completed in 1304.
The Ypres belfry, 70 meters high, emphasizes the enormous importance of the cloth trade. This leads to the wealth and power of medieval Ypres. The belfry was the safest and best protected place in the city during the Middle Ages. It is also the storage place for the 'free letters' (documents declaring priviliges, local souvereignity and autonomy of the city) and for the treasury. The tower also serves as a weapons storage facility and as a watchtower to see approaching anemies of spot fires.
The tower, with its exception of the base was destroyed during the First World War and reconstructed.

Same anon here!! Sorry for badgering you about this but I forgot to mention that in the same tour bus episode it was CARLOS who was being the voice of reason (re:Kendall freaking out) for once which is probably just bc Carlos Penavega was directing and probably had an input on some things but looking at it in-universe is kind of insane? Go you funky boy band switch up your roles in the dynamic go go go
Hiya! Yeah, I remember that. Looking at Carlos' reaction at face value, I always found it to be a tad strange. Not that him being the voice of reason was the strangest exhibition of characterization because there are plenty of other "out of character" moments that are of more concern, but I guess Carlos can always surprise you. I'd rather he be strangely adult about things than strangely immature and nonsensical because being immature became his one and only character trait down the road that was often used in cases of comic relief. I know there's more to him than that, there's gotta be.
Interesting tidbit about Carlos Penavega directing Big Time Tour Bus, though! I had no idea. Also, you're good. Send as many asks as you'd like, I'm all for discussing things like this.

Can anyone challenge Lotte Kopecky at De Ronde van Vlaanderen (the Tour of Flanders), as she looks for a third victory in a row? Last year SD Worx was so dominant that Kopecky's teammate Demi Vollering took second. But Marianne Vos is back on the start list for the first time since 2013, and she is in top form. And there's always an opportunity for a break-out performance of a new talent, like Puck Pieterse, who is on the start list.

Ronde van Vlaanderen Cyclo - my 2025 experience
And in what felt like a heartbeat the Ronde van Vlaanderen cyclo was over and 5 months of dedication, training and following of process was complete. I have been keen to document the training and the feel of my legs and the website https://fendrieneu.home.blog/ has those monthly updates. I rode the event in 2015, but this year I was quicker and had a higher finishing position. This was…
