On the outskirts of Pahrump, Nevada, is a massive sign reading COFFINWOOD and a monstrous menagerie of custom tombstones, refurbished hearses and dangling skeletons. It’s a custom coffin factory, wedding chapel, hearse garage and pet cemetery on the doorstep of Death Valley.
Tumblr media
If you drive by at night, flashing lights are synchronized to haunted house music that you can tune into on your car radio.
Tumblr media
Coffinwood is the coffin-themed complex of Bryan and Dusty Schoening that includes their home, gardens, garages, workshops, chapel, pet-cemetery, church of the coffin and business “Coffin-It-Up.”
Tumblr media
Coffinwood is the fusion of death, fun and romance.
Tumblr media
In 1997, Bryan’s parents and dog were tragically killed by a drunk driver. Bryan was revolted by his experience with the funeral industry. In particular, the upselling of poor quality caskets to the grieving.
Tumblr media
Years later, his daughter asked him to make a coffin for Halloween. Bryan, a trained carpenter, thought it would be simple, but found the angles and design a rewarding challenge.
Tumblr media
Bryan decided to dedicate himself to coffin-making and doing his part to make the funeral experience easier, more affordable and more personalized for others.
Tumblr media
Bryan is the only coffin maker in Nevada and one of only a few in the United States. The US is one of the few countries that uses caskets instead of coffins.
Tumblr media
What’s the difference? Coffins have 6 sides, usually tapering at the ankles and shoulders so as to reflect the shape of their eternal cargo better, whereas Caskets only have 4 sides. Coffins generally have a removable lid with no hinges and caskets have a bifurcated lid on hinges.
Tumblr media
Dusty and Bryan met in California protesting the treatment of Circus Elephants and they have been together for over 30 years. They even have a dedicated grave in their pet cemetery in remembrance of Stoney, an elephant in Las Vegas killed by mishandling.
Tumblr media
They share a love of the macabre. Dusty has a collection of 12 Hearses that Bryan helps her refurbish. Four of the vintage hearses are currently driveable.
Tumblr media
The couple exudes dedication and romance. There is so much devotion at Coffinwood that people began asking the couple to marry them.
Tumblr media
After so many people requested weddings, they began the Church Of The Coffin and Bryan became an ordained minister so they could legally marry couples in their outdoor gazebo chapel shaped like, you guessed it, a coffin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As American burial culture turns towards cremation and the living want more coffin accoutrement, Coffinwood is evolving. Bryan makes many urns and has also branched out into cabinetry, purses, ring boxes, garden boxes and luggage.
Tumblr media
As Coffinwood seeks to enhance our relationship with death, the couple is also seeking to preserve life. Bryan speaks at the local schools about the dangers of impaired driving and the loss of his parents.
Tumblr media
He invites the students to Coffinwood for workshops and is serious when he offers a sober, no-judgement ride home anytime.
Tumblr media
Most Tuesdays the Church Of The Coffin holds non-denominational services and annually, they bury a themed coffin and put up a headstone to commemorate and celebrate the passing of another year.
Tumblr media
Even if you can’t make it to Coffinwood, the recognizable hexagonal, coffin-shaped wedding gazebo and garden planters are visible from GoogleEarth and space.

Guests at the Last Frontier pool watched as a mushroom cloud rose from the Simon Test, part of the Operation Upshot-Knothole, at the Nevada Test Site outside of Las Vegas on April 25, 1953. The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce issued a calendar for tourists, listing the scheduled times of the bomb detonations and the best places to view them.
When I saw this photo shared on Facebook by the National Atomic Testing Museum (Atomic Museum), I was thinking what a contrast from just eight years earlier when Enrico Fermi was taking bets ahead of the Trinity test about whether a nuclear detonation would ignite the atmosphere and possibly destroy the world. That’s an episode recounted in John Adams’s opera Doctor Atomic which I saw at Lyric Opera in the 2007/8 season.
I knew Fermi wasn’tserious, but hadn’t understood that by that time that particular catastrophe had already been ruled out by scientists as even a remote possibility, but the idea that it at least might have been possible lived on in the more popular imagination for some time.

#Repost @lacannabisnews ・・・ "When Nevada legalized recreational cannabis, people expected the normal array of problems as Las Vegas tourists over-indulged. It's not like Sin City's tourism industry lacks experience when it comes to people who have had a few too many drinks or perhaps made another poor consumption choice.  Every Las Vegas Resort Casino operator has security and medical procedures in place for everything from belligerent customers to health-related issues. You can drink as much as you want in Las Vegas and/or consume all the cannabis you can handle, but cross that line and you will be handled -- not the old-school Las Vegas broken legs and dumped in an alley handled, but security (or the police) will make sure that your bad choices don't impact others." @thestreet #thestreet #lasvegas #cannabis #lasvegasstrip #cannabisnews #consumption #tourism #tourist #lacannabisnews #nevada #laws (at Bellagio Las Vegas3600, Las Vegas Boulevard SouthLas Vegas, NV 89109) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpi_qXQMyOM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

it kind of makes no sense but i like to think las nevadas was a project schlatt initially conceptualized during manberg.
it was proposed as a way to fund new projects, tourism, whatever excuse they came up with. really, it was an excuse to talk to each other, planing this dream life they’d live during late nights after paperwork and bustling to meetings. of course, all planning went out the window when schlatt would bring out the crown royal.
if their hands weren’t on each other, they’d take a walk, tour manberg at night, giggling and smoking all night. later as their relationship soured, and the cabinet started showing wear, they’d still go through the same motions. they’d retrace their steps, head outside after sharing some drinks, but instead of pet names murmured under breaths or conversation about that big beautiful casino in the desert, quackity would silently flick the ash off of his cigarette, and schlatt would polish off the rest of that bottle. they’d look at the stars instead of seeing them reflected in each other’s eyes. and then they’d go back inside. does anyone hear me

Bethesda is not trying to make the West look like the East coast in terms of appearance and lifestyle.
The only time we see a Fallout 4 or 3 like town is Filly and that’s a one time thing. Yeah it doesn’t make sense but it’s similar to Junktown.
As for the idea that since Shady Sands was bombed that means the entire West coast was knocked down to how it was during Fallout 1. Shady Sands is only one city in the NCR. Yeah it was the first capital but the survivors are doing well in Vault 4 and will probably rebuild one day. We also never see the rest of the Boneyard or other NCR places. So Reno, San Fran, Arroyo, etc are most likely still okay.
As for New Vegas Strip it relied heavily on tourism and trade from California. So it makes sense it would suffer. If the theories are true and House won the game then the destruction could be from citizens from the other parts of New Vegas tired of how the Strip acts. Again, NV is only one city in Nevada. Goodsprings and other towns are probably okay.
The term “War never changes” applies with this show as well. Yes the West Coast rebuilt but all it takes is the cycle of violence to spark and it’s back to square one for some people.

The Kansas legislature passed a bill Wednesday that would classify organized retail crime (ORC) a felony offense, joining nine other states that have passed similar laws in the last year.
ORC refers to orchestrated groups of shoplifters who commit smash-and-grab robberies of stores or target cargo carriers.
The state’s upper chamber passed the Substitute House Bill 2144, which would split the felony charges into two tiers. A theft of merchandise valued at more than $3,000 would be classified a felony and those convicted would face between 31 and 136 months behind bars. If the amount stolen exceeds $15,000, the sentence range is between 38 and 172 months.
'BURGLARY TOURISM' PLAGUES SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AS UNVETTED FOREIGNERS RAID LUXE HOUSES
The bill still has to be signed by Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat, before it goes into effect.
In support of the bill, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach wrote that ORC isn’t "mere shoplifting."
"These crimes typically involve stealing for personal use. It is large-scale theft of retail merchandise that represents a concerted effort to victimize a business, often with the intention of reselling the items for financial gain and often using those financial proceeds to fund additional criminal activity," he said.
A 2023 report from the National Retail Federation, the world’s largest retail association, found that organized retail crime was a primary driver of the massive amount of "shrink" retailers saw in 2022, with non-employee stealing making up 36%.
The term "shrink" typically means theft and other forms of inventory losses, and retailers nationwide experienced $112 billion in losses in 2022.
Texas, Virginia, Alabama, Indiana, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Oregon enacted retail theft laws last year, while California, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana and North Carolina passed ORC laws in 2022.
"While theft has an undeniable impact on retailer margins and profitability, retailers are highly concerned about the heightened levels of violence and threat of violence associated with theft and crime," the NRF wrote on its website.
State Senate Republicans who voted for the bill argued that ORC needs its own category since shoplifters who steal for their own use versus those who are part of a broader organized scheme are charged the same way.
"Currently we don’t have the proper tools to prosecute that type of crime, so that’s what this bill does," state Sen. Kellie Warren, a Republican, said of the bill, The Topeka Journal reported.
Some states hit hard by retail theft have gone so far as to create their own law enforcement task forces to address it. The NRF found that Los Angeles was one of the hardest-hit cities in California for ORC, leading the LA County Sheriff Department to create the Organized Retail Theft Crime Task Force.
Meanwhile, opponents of tough-on-crime laws such as these argue the harsher penalties are too extreme for the crimes and could prevent a person from being rehabilitated. Maine’s legislature passed a bill in the House this week that would prohibit charging people who already have two prior convictions of theft if the third theft is worth less than $500. The state’s current law permits a felony charge for the third conviction if the crimes all occur within a decade.
