A Beautiful Vintage Jewelry "The Glycine collar"

The plique-à-jour technique was used for the green leaves of the Glycine collar by Philippe Wolfers, perhaps the most important piece by the Belgian jeweler.

It has wisteria blossoms of opal and watermelon tourmalines and curved branches set with tiny rubies.

Another rock show, another great find!

My wife and I drove to the other side of town for another rock and mineral club’s show, and I feel like I stole the stuff I came home with. First, while my wife and I were browsing a display of jewelry with cut stones, the woman running the stand commented on my opal necklace. She looked more than a little surprised when I told her I cut the stone myself, using a diamond-grit knife sharpening block of all things. I could only say "I know that's the wrong way to do that, but I wasn't going to buy a $500 cutting wheel to do one stone!" (it was a lockdown project)

Chatted for a while with another dealer about his small display of unusual faceted stones. He had this one enormous almost 40 carat faceted peridot bigger than my thumbnail. I didn't know they came that big! I don't even want to know what he'd ask for that... But he was so nice and spent so long talking to us, I felt like I should buy something. He had this cute little pink tourmaline crystal for only $14 so I grabbed that to say thanks.

But the real show was still to come.

I had my eye on a bright mint green dioptase specimen another dealer had, but it was a couple hundred bucks, and I didn't really want to spend that much on a rock. While I was mulling that over, I saw a dealer I’ve seen before at a couple other local mineral shows was back with his amazing stock of Ethiopian opals. He had a couple giant pieces of amazingly clear crystal opal the size of my fist sitting in a bowl of water. I turned them over to get a look at the play of color, but I was afraid to pick them up and maybe drop a multi-thousand dollar rock.

However, he also had trays of smaller pieces sorted by price per carat. It was like a box of bifrost shrapnel, glittering in overlapping rainbow colors under the bright lights in his booth (very important when you're selling opal!). One particular piece caught my eye, but I was afraid to ask what he wanted for it, last time I tried that with one of his pieces it was >$300 and I had to put it back :( . When he told me that this beautiful crystal opal was only $62 I had to have it.

Like, sure, it has a couple cracks in it and its a funny shape, but I'm not going to cut it so who cares? LOOK AT THOSE OVERLAPPING LAYERS OF RAINBOW IRIDESCENCE! I turn it around at the end of the video because that same side of the stone is blue, green, yellow, or even red depending how you look at it and how the light is oriented. Sometimes you can see multiple colors through each other. Its doing what I associate with good opals, and completely saturating the red/green/blue pixels of my phone camera when the play of color is lined up right.

This is the opal specimen I've been looking for. This is why I love going to rock shows, some of this stuff has to be seen in person to be appreciated. Photos are nice, videos are better, but opals need to be seen to be believed. Those colors are unreal bright.

I've been getting into the Steven Universe fandom so here's a brief display of my au and my ocs starting with a working au title...

Earth Gems under a Lavender Moon's motherly gaze

When Earth was given to Pink Diamond to colonize what the other Diamonds didn't take into account was the unique structure of Earth that allowed it to already hold life and so when they started colonization something, or more appropriately someone, formed at the center of the earth and gave life through her own birth, because did you really not question the brilliant violet hue of the Amethyst? When the corruption blast was sent to Earth following the "shattering" of Pink Diamond only then was the hidden gem freed from the depths of the planet she was trapped in, and when she emerged from the rubble in that of a fetal position both of her hands were clasped as if protecting something, she opened her hands and there was her Pearl. The Pearl took it's first "breath", unaware and frightened, as it's creator stared down at it in wonder and awe as they both heard her voice for the first time.

"This is life?"

Purple Diamond, "The Lavender Moon": "Born" from the corruption blast Purple Diamond lived relatively the life that Pink wished she could have, she lived among humans as a strange gypsy dancer in flowing silky attire and an unmoving purple gemstone on her forehead, and she was considered a beauty to rival that of Aphrodite, though it was equally well known of the young, dark and just as beautiful young man that seemed to trail hee, but ever since she began to exist she felt as if her existence wasn't enough, it wasn't what she was destined to be, and eventually she would discover the legend of the Diamond authority and make the ultimate sacrifice for someone she loved, in true Diamond style, and would command her Pearl to shatter her.

Black Pearl, "The Gold's Fool": The only gem you'll ever meet that portrays themself as a male, Black Pearl is the ever faithful servant of Purple Diamond who was born alongside her and also forced to shatter her, he is probably one of the only people Pearl feels she can relate to, after the actions that Purple Diamond made him do Black Pearl was left with a bad case of survivors guilt and became a "serial shatterer", Black Pearl was an antagonist after his introduction and later became a Crystal Gem.

Midnight Gold Tourmaline, "The Wisest Star": Credited for being one of the earliest of Purple Diamond's creations Midnight Gold Tourmaline or simply Tourmaline is considered by most to be "the wisest gem" due to her previous status as Purple Diamond's advisor. She would come to meet the Crystal Gems during Black Pearl's antagonist arc as Tourmaline would play a major part in defeating Black Pearl, she would not go on to join the Crystal Gems with Black Pearl but would stay a close friend of theirs and even would resume a similar "advisor" role she had with Purple Diamond with Steven and would develop a very mother-son relationship with him.

Aventurine, "The Wayward Warrior": While Tourmaline was praised for her intelligence she was no fighter, and what is a gem without an army, so was formed Aventurine "the greatest potential of Purple Diamond" and called so due to the fact she was "advertised" at the time of her birth for having been made of a formula which hoped to mimic that of a Diamond, and what emerged was something that did not live up to expectations, a sickly and cloudy green color but only until you shone a light and then it shone every color you could imagine, impossible to shatter yet not indestructible and after the death of her Diamond what little purpose she did feel she had was gone, she lived as a wayward mercenary before becoming a Crystal Gem.

Rainbow Opal, "The Lavender Moon's final blessing": By her title you can guess, Rainbow Opal or simply Opal is the youngest of the earth gems and was the final gem created by Purple Diamond on the day of her shattering, Opal was created from a formula that Purple Diamond had worked to perfect since she emerged from the rubble with Black Pearl in hand, a formula which was meant to create more Pearls, she thought she finally reached her breakthrough but she did not live long enough to see the result, and when Black Pearl returned to their homeland on that day, the homeland of all Earth Gems, he was reminded of the formula but when he entered he saw a gem child, quite small, of faintly rainbow colors, otherwise quite pale, she was a failure but he kept her and named her Opal, Opal would play a major part in defeating Black Pearl and is currently serving under a reformed(as she can be) White Diamond on Homeworld.
