Imperial Crown of Russia or the Great Imperial Crown is one of the most outstanding examples of ‘regalia.’
Regalia is referred to as the emblems or insignia of royalty that survived through history.
It is a precious cultural heritage treasure — a well-documented and well-dated piece of jewellery.
Regalia jewellery pieces offer historians great insight into the gemstones used, their historical market values, and occurrences.
It also helps gemologists and jewellers to know how the gems were named and set on the piece of jewellery.
While royal crowns were usually made for individual rulers and later broken up, some of this royal regalia could be found in museums today.
Here are some interesting facts about one such royal artifact, the great Imperial Crown of Russia.
The Great Imperial Crown was made for Catherine the Great’s coronation, as the Russian Empress in 1762 AD, by Georg Friedrich Eckart and Jérémie Pauzié.
It is set with 4936 diamonds with a total weight of 2858 ct, 75 natural pearls, and a large 398.72 ct red spinel, historically known as “balas ruby,” which is among the largest ever reported in the literature, most probably from Badakhshan (today’s Tajikistan).
Imperial Crown of Russia was first worn by the Russian empress Catherine, followed by the subsequent seven emperors of her dynasty.
This royal regalia has remained a permanent fixture on the royal head.
This priceless artifact has been passed on to eight members of the Romanov family:
Catherine II, Peter III, Paul I, Alexander I, Nikolai I, Alexander II, Alexander III, and Nikolai II.
The Romanov dynasty survived till 1917, yet the crown publically appeared for the last time in 1906 at the opening ceremony of the first State Duma.
The crown was estimated to be worth $52 million in 1920.
The stones that the royal regalia comprises were sold off by the Bolsheviks and replaced in 1985.
Later in 1998, the crown was moved to the fund of Kremlin’s Diamond. Subsequently, it was declared to be priceless in a literal sense.
📷 : A modern replica version of the Imperial Crown was made in 2012 by Kristall-Smolensk, as part of the Jewellery project "Creation of Imperial Crown of Russia in Modern Interpretation" to celebrate the 400 years of the Romanov Dynasty and the 250 years of the Imperial Crown, as well as the 50th anniversary of the diamond industry in Russia.
Using white gold (original used silver) and 11,426 russian diamonds (original crown had 4,936 diamonds) from Alrosa with a total weight of 1180 ct, including 74 cultured pearls and a 384.71ct pear-shaped double rose cut purple tourmaline on top of the crown.
The spinel in the replica was replaced with a unique natural red tourmaline with a mass of about 400 karats.

What is topaz in jewelry?
The word "topaz" is believed to originate from the Greek roots Topázios or Topázion, passing through Old French: Topace and Latin: Topazius, derived from the word Τοπαζος, which was the ancient name for the island of St. John in the Red Sea, where yellow gems (now believed to be chrysolite: pale yellow olivine crystals) were originally mined.
The term "topaz" was first used to refer to the modern gemstone in 1737. Ancient Sri Lanka (Taprobane) exported topaz to ancient Greece and Egypt, leading to the similar naming of the island by Alexander Polyhistor (Topazius) and ancient Egyptians (Topapwene), meaning "land of topaz."
Pliny stated that Topazos was a legendary island in the Red Sea, where the "topaz" gem was first found. Alternatively, the word "topaz" may be related to the Sanskrit word तपस् "tapas," meaning "heat" or "fire."
Topaz is a type of gemstone. When cut and polished, it is used for making jewelry or other decorative items. Low-quality topaz is often used as an inexpensive material because of its hardness, and it is used to produce fire-resistant materials for high-temperature environments. Topaz can be used as a flux in steel production.
Using topaz as a fire-resistant material may cause health and environmental problems, as the combustion process of topaz can release fluorine as a by-product.
Topaz is ranked as the second category of gemstones or semi-precious stones, along with aquamarine, morganite, and tourmaline. In contrast, the first category of gemstones or precious stones includes ruby, sapphire, diamond, and peridot.
Is a topaz stone valuable?
The price of topaz, like other gemstones, depends on quality. However, some general statements can be made. Blue topaz, which is the variety most commonly seen in jewelry today, is produced in such large quantities that it currently generally sells for around $25 per carat at retail prices for ring sizes. Larger sizes may be slightly more expensive. Although natural blue topaz exists, the production of large quantities of treated blue topaz has driven the prices of natural blue topaz to equal that of treated blue topaz. Smaller sizes and lower qualities can be less expensive.
Colorless topaz, the raw material for producing blue topaz (by irradiation and heat treatment), comes in sizes of 100 carats or more and sells for less than $8 per carat. Brown topaz has prices similar to these.
How can you tell if a topaz is good?
A high-quality topaz will have a vivid, even color, be eye-clean, and well-cut, and come with proper documentation regarding its authenticity and any treatments. Understanding these factors will help you make an informed decision when evaluating a topaz.
What color of topaz is most valuable?
The most valuable and sought-after color of topaz is imperial topaz, a rich orange color with reddish-pink or yellowish tones. This vibrant hue is caused by trace amounts of chromium and iron impurities in the gemstone's chemical composition.
the distinctively beautiful color and the rarity of its production sources make imperial topaz one of the most precious and expensive colors of topaz.
Conclusion
Topaz is a gemstone that has been known and valued since ancient times. The name is believed to originate from the Greek word "topazios" or "topazion", referring to an island in the Red Sea where yellow gems were originally mined (now thought to be chrysolite).
Topaz comes in various colors, with blue being the most common variety used in jewelry today. While large quantities of treated blue topaz have made it relatively inexpensive, the rarest and most valuable color is imperial topaz, which has a rich orange hue with reddish-pink or yellowish tones.
The value of topaz depends on several factors, including color, clarity, cut, and size. High-quality topaz should have a vivid, even color, be eye-clean (free from visible inclusions), well-cut, and come with proper documentation regarding its authenticity and any treatments.

Queer Fashion:
Queer fashion is a phrase used to describe a style of clothing that challenges established gender and sexuality stereotypes. Queer fashion is frequently bright and lively, and it may be used to convey one's originality and confidence. While queer fashion is still relatively young, it has swiftly gained popularity among those seeking to express their individual style. Fashion has always been bisexual in terms of gender identification. Many exceptional presentations were given by non-LGBTQ+ designers at New York Fashion Week. The design of this season's Chromat collection is straightforward, in contrast to the sleek aesthetic of this season's Chromat collaboration with Tourmaline. It's frequently literal, whether it's a Kenneth Nicholson boys' flowery frock or Luar's joggers and button-down combination. Is it possible for fashion to become LGBTQI-friendly depending on who creates it? Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Thierry Mugler are among the most notable designers who have gone out of their way to look openly homosexual.
youtube
Dressing queer, in general, implies expressing yourself in a way that defies standard gender conventions and expectations. Wearing clothes associated with the other gender, or just choosing to dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable and reflects your real self, might be examples of this. For some, wearing queer is a political statement against LGBTQIA+ persecution, while for others, it is simply a means to express their individuality. Dressing queer, for whatever cause, is about being true to oneself and not worrying what others think or say.
From the 1990s to the early 2000s, runway appearances by gay fashion became more frequent. French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier created the conical bra corset dress for women, as well as the skirt for men.
Queer aesthetics refers to art and/or design that questions conventional notions of beauty and taste. This might take the form of art that is purposefully nasty or insulting, art that celebrates queer bodies and sexuality, or art that subverts standard gender norms. Finally, queer aesthetics is about deviating from the norm and creating something distinct and real to the queer experience. The new 'queer' aesthetic sense is deceptive at times. Styles' presence does not represent a danger to the straight, straight-guilt norm; owing to a profitable luxury fashion relationship, he maintains an affluent, not-yet-explicitly explicit existence. By clicking on camp, drag, decadence, or repulsion, you may see an online gallery of queer aesthetic dimensions. This is exemplified by the Met Gala’s decision to feature Susan Sontag’s Notes on Camp as part of its 2019 theme, which promotes the mainstreaming of aesthetic influences derived from gay culture.

St. Patrick’s Day through the years
Every year since the Duke of Cambridge has been made Colonel of the Irish Guards, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge hands out Shamrocks for the troops at Calvary Barracks to pin to their uniform for the St. Patrick’s Day parade. This tradition was started by Queen Alexandra and was later taken on by the Queen Mother and until more recently, before Catherine took on the role, Princess Anne. It’s a staple in the Cambridge’s calendar, though this year the event may be in peril of cancellation to help stop the spread of coronavirus. As of yet, nothing has been cancelled. Either way, let’s take a look back at what Catherine wore.
2012

2012 was the first year Kate handed out shamrocks and she fittingly wore the color green. This green coat is by Emilia Wickstead and the way the pleats drape is a dream. Her rich brown Emmy London and Lock and Co hat complemented this green beautifully.

Kate’s gold shamrock brooch with the singular emerald in the middle is by Cartier and owned by the Irish Guards; it was loaned to Kate for the occasion She also accessorized with her oval green amethyst earrings from Kiki McDonough, a Christmas present from Will, and her diamond by the yard Tiffany and Co bracelet.

2013

Catherine was very pregnant with Prince George in 2013 but she still surprised us with a rewear. Instead of wearing this green Emilia Wickstead piece as a coatdress, she ditched the belt and wore it as a true coat over a black turtle neck and black tights. Keeping with the back theme, she wore a black fascinator by Lock and Co, black suede pumps by Episode, and black gloves by Cornelia James.

Pinned to her lapel once again is the Irish Guards gold Cartier brooch. Other than that, her jewelry was simple; she wore unidentified diamond and emerald earrings.
2014

In 2014 Kate delivered a new coat to us in, unsurprisingly, the color green. This piece is by Hobbs and it’s belted with a belt that remains unidentified to this day. That fun green hat is by Gina Foster. The shoes and clutch are both by Emmy London and are not green but in fact a very dark gray--I believe it’s actually called carbon gray.

Kate accessories the look with her two tone Tissot watch, her cushion cut green amethyst drop earrings from Kiki McDonough, and the Irish Guards Cartier Gold Shamrock brooch (I swear its hiding behind those real shamrocks).
2015

I think this is the only year Kate wore something other than green! There isn’t even a bit of green in sight except those shamrocks. While pregnant with Princess Charlotte Kate chose a coat by Catherine Walker and the same shoes and hat from 2012: Emmy heels and Lock and Co hat. She’s also holding a brown Emmy clutch while wearing brown Cornelia James gloves.

For earrings she chose her citrine tear drop earrings from Kiki McDonough and paired it with the Irish Guard’s gold Cartier Shamrock brooch.
2017

Kate did not hand out the Shamrocks in 2016 so we’re just right ahead into 2017 and this might be my favorite look yet. Kate debuted a Catherine Walker coat, obviously in green, with green velvet cuffs, pocket flaps, and collar--peeking out of her cuffs is her Cartier watch. Her shoes are Emmy, a different style from previous years as the toe is pointed and there is no platform. Kate had a clutch by Etui--it was a black leather clutch but she was barely pictured with it. Will and Kate jetted off to start their Paris visit after this event and she was pictured holding it during their arrival also.

The hat is Sylvia Fletcher for Lock and Co, her earrings are Monica Vinader, and again, she’s wearing the Irish Guards gold shamrock brooch.
2018

Catherine was very pregnant with Prince Louis and chose this green Catherine Walker coat she debuted earlier in the year while visiting Sweden. The collar and cuffs are a lovely black faux fur while her gloves are Cornelia James and her sturdy block heels are a favorite by Tod’s.

Affixed to the fur collar is the Irish Guards shamrock brooch. Kate is also rewearing her Gina Foster hat with her green tourmaline and green amethyst earrings from Kiki McDonough, earrings which were a gift from Will on the occasion of Charlotte’s birth.
2019

2019 brought us Kate’s first Alexander McQueen coat for St. Patrick’s day and no surprises, it’s green. Her shoes are a block heel in black suede byGianvito Rossi and the green hat is thought to be Lock and Co. Again, gloves are thought to be Cornelia James.

As usual, Kate is wearing the Irish Guard’s gold Cartier shamrock brooch and her own green tourmaline and green amethyst Kiki McDonough earrings which were a gift from William on the occasion of Charlotte’s birth.
That’s all for St. Patrick’s day through the years! As of posting this the parade is scheduled to continue as usual on Sunday but I’m sure the government is monitoring the situation closely and would only cancel if they felt continuing as planned would be a detriment to public health.
