Hey here’s a thought though: nureyev having to step up as a buddy substitute

Like, other people have already pointed out that with buddy incapacitated (I choose to believe this I will believe she is only incapacitated) nureyev is kind of the only one who has access to the facility layout bc he memorised it, admittedly upside down but he did memorise it..... and honestly he’s proven himself a capable leader before - just look at ultrabots, rita was leading that mission but when she realised they were in trouble, nureyev was the one who stepped up to fix things, and he did a really good job. He has a long history of being able to think on his feet and improvise well (which is kind of out of necessity bc he's a highly competent idiot but ANYWAY), and buddy has kind of like.... already pinged him as having the potential to challenge her leadership and shot him down (the "when did we vote on the new captain" lines in ultrabots)

In terms of like, succession, nureyev is really the only one who can fill buddy's shoes in her absence. He's a master planner and a strategist, the only thing he lacks is the trust from the team to be able to organise them, but at this point juno and rita have already worked with him in a leadership position and we've just seen that jet actually trusts his skills as a thief as well, because he's seen them demonstrated over the past year. The only person who would actively challenge him taking oversight of the heist in buddy's place would be vespa, and that conflict is well in progress already.....

I think it'd be really interesting if buddy comes to to find out that nureyev has taken up the mantle and guided the heist to completion in her place, especially after saying last episode that she hasn't noticed any change in him, because honestly I think he has changed and she's just not seeing it because she's too focused on her own issues, or for whatever other reason we're just not seeing yet

anyway i’m thinking about how, in what lies beyond part 1, juno is thinking about vulnerability like a happy offering he’s willing to give to the people he loves, knowing and trusting that he’ll be protected and cared for and shown their vulnerabilities in return...

and then in what lies beyond part 2, sasha is thinking about vulnerability, about family, as something that leaves her exposed, like a wound she needs to hide, a feeling she can’t stand, her “only weaknesses now.”

and it gets worse once you hear sasha’s pause and “that’s an interesting choice of word - family” again because i wonder how sasha really felt hearing juno call the aurinkos his family. sasha still considers juno family, but from the moment she hears juno call the aurinkos that and stick to it, up until juno looks at her and lets her live, she’s operating on the assumption that her familial love for juno is no longer reciprocated.

I've only been caught up for like 6 hours but i kind of want to throw what I think out there.

Do I think Peter is going to betray the group? Probably not. Do I think he is going to take those 4 items from them and give them to whomever he owes? Yes. Do I think he'll purposely put any of them in danger? No. Why? It doesn't seem like Peter, there was talk early in the season about how he has a strong moral code (and about how he could get rid of it if he wanted) and I don't think that'll change. I do think there might be a big moment where Juno has to decide to trust Peter but other than that idk.

What do I think comes next? Something to do with Dark Matters and The Ruby 7. I don't know why but I have a feeling the cure mother prime isn't that important in the grand scheme of the plot (I'll probably eat these words).

Dark Matters because of Agent G and the "new direction" it's going in. Also because they want to take the crew in alive which seems weird to me? And because they don't seem interested in stopping them get the cure mother prime, just getting them. I also think Sasha's going to be involved not only because last we saw her she became a sub-director and we haven't heard anything since (I mean Mick has shown up several times), but also because I think she was the one to stall the other sub-director's robot explosion.

The Ruby 7 because we have slowly been learning more about it, well, more of what we don't know about it. M'tendere didn't make it, but was told to study it, it doesn't have actual car parts inside of it, and has slowly been developing/revealing a conciousness. Not to mention something saved everyone when they crashed. (Also why Ruby 7? Were there other versions?) I think this car is going to be really important soon.

So I know we’re all pulling for a Vespa episode (and believe me, I am too), but the more I think about it the more I think we’re gonna have to wait for that. I could be totally wrong, but our reasoning for Vespa being next is that the blade was the next thing Buddy mentioned in Man in Glass, right? But in Tools of Rust Buddy and Jet talked about how they’re going to be in the middle of nowhere for a while. She said something like “a lot can happen in a few weeks,” I think? So I’m thinking we might have a break before the next big heist.

Plus, Rita went through a lot in Tools of Rust. We see her grappling with morality, and expectations vs reality, and that’s before M’Tendere dies right in front of her. And we didn’t get to see the aftermath of that with her at the end. So I’m thinking the next episode will be from Rita’s perspective, with the crew on the Carte Blanche traveling to the Outer Rim. The conflict could be anything from mechanical errors to space pirates, but I think we’re going to see more of how Rita’s mind is working. And it’s probably going to hurt.

I have a theory about the finale, and have had this theory since before the recent break. We got hints about Jon maybe needing to die to set things right back in episode 186, but I think that was too overt to be what will actually happen. I think Martin might have to die, and I think Jon will he the one who has to kill him.

I think Jon will be the only one who can put things right, but I think he'll need a sacrifice to put things right, a sacrifice who is marked by every fear. And Martin, having been through domains of every fear might just be considered marked by them all.

OK so I just had a really sad thought and I have to come share it with everyone.

More than once in TMA we've seen where someone who has been kept alive via the effects of the Entities dies when they're no longer connected to that entity. The one that comes to mind first is the one from Upon the Stair. The man who wasn't there who, when he was there, his body realized he should have died long ago and he crumbled to ash. That's the only one that comes to mind immediately, but I'm pretty sure it's happened at least once more.

Point is! Jon died. His heart and lungs stopped. What if they manage to save the world and separate the Entities from reality and he escapes with his life, only for his body to catch up with him and for him to die after?

If it turns out that the audience - us - is what Annabelle is implying is listening, I would like that IF it is because having a tie to another dimension, like the tapes coming over here, is an integral part in making the crack at hilltop road a proper gateway. That would turn the audience into potential victims of the entities. It would take the concept from "you listened to the media, you're a terrible voyeur" to "you listened to the media, you've damned yourself" and just flips the whole dynamic, you know? Your attempts at getting other people to listen is a subtle manipulation by the Web to get a larger foothold here. The chill running down your spine as you listen and the vague feeling like you're being watched isn't the result of an overactive imagination, it's the Entities feeding on you.

It makes me think of the end of The Bifrost Incident, in Terminus, when Inspector Edda says that anyone listening is in danger and you'd better run as far and as fast as you can

I feel like most of my posting has been very nureyev-oriented recently but 1. I love him and 2. Cannot stop thinking about what must be going through this man's head. You decide against every instinct that you've learnt and stuck to since you were a teenager to stay with and put your trust in a group of near-strangers - bearing in mind that two out of five of them don't even particularly like you - and within what, a week or two? You end up seriously injured, possibly kidnapped, most likely in a spaceship crash while heavily sedated or unconscious - like do you regret that decision when you wake up? Do you pull away again because this is exactly what you were scared would happen, or double down and try to hold your trust in the people (or person - I'm not blaming vespa by any means but it seems to have been her lapse on lookout that led to the broken leg) that let you down despite where it's brought you so far? God I need to KNOW

Very interesting to me that jet actually sided with nureyev over vespa. I know he stated his reasons but I would really not have expected that and I wonder how nureyev feels about it

Buddy's relationship with jet?? Really good?? Love them?? Like obvs I don't think she made a good decision in not confiding with vespa about her heart but I'm really glad she has such a solid friendship and support system with jet

I really don't think nureyev fucked up on purpose....... idk maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part but firstly, he respects jet and I don't think he'd go as far as to try to kill him, and secondly..... idk I feel like there were smoother ways of doing it even if he was?? He could have swapped out the plans for an actually wrong set, or hidden them better, or so many other things that also wouldn't have involved putting himself in danger mid-heist, idk the alternative just doesn't sit right with me. But we'll see ig

I think what would be really interesting for me is if this kicked up nureyev's fear of losing his touch again bc he genuinely fucked up and brought that all to a head with vespa right there as well, I'd really like to see that whole situation pop off....... I think this one rly is wishful thinking on my end but idk I wanna see those two work out their issues lol

Okay some MORE thoughts now that I have slept on it

I fully think nureyev is gonna have some kind of breakdown next episode. I think that man is gonna snap like a twig. He's clearly not sleeping, clearly on edge over more than just the heist (his debts, probably), he sounded absolutely, genuinely stunned at the reveal that he'd been looking at the schematics upside down, he almost got jet killed, and given how this episode ended vespa is absolutely not going to stop laying into him any time soon, and it's gonna be even worse when buddy's task for her comes out. Add to that his preexisting anxieties about losing his touch, the way he says to juno "Don't look at me like that, not you", because juno is his main tether to the crew and the one person who he can believe trusts him no matter what, doubting him, and I really do think he's gonna break....

I'm also gonna argue that that messy room is feeling very lived in, isn't it? That's not the room of a man who is planning on cutting his ties and running any time soon. That's the room of a man who's settled - everything unpacked, stacks of books and personal items, idk this could just be me but I feel like this might be a pretty solid indicator that nureyev might have decided to abandon trying to pay his debts in order to stay with the crew...... and if not it's a very fun detail which I love lol

Buddy has been delaying the mission for a year. The last we heard from nureyev, he was telling his creditors that he would have the promised items for them before the year was out. I really doubt that he has enough good will with these people for another extension. Seems like nureyev must be very very close to running out of time here, if he hasn't done so already

I'm still convinced sasha is gonna make an appearance this season!! I know it!! And we also know that dark matters most likely heard rita talking about the curemother prime so like the likelihood of dark matters interrupting the heist/waiting for them with the curemother?? Quite high!! And if that's when we get the juno pov oh boy

You know we've never actually had it confirmed why buddy had jet following juno even as far back as the museum heist

I've been working on the assumption that nureyev had already applied to her by that point and this was her checking out his one and only reference, and that maybe the man she mentioned missing his flight to mars for the rasbach job was in fact peter, and I don't necessarily think that's wrong but like, she'd been keeping track of juno for a pretty long time by the time he walked into the desert, I think way longer than you need just to check out a reference

I'm wondering if knowing what we know now about how similar he and vespa are if buddy didn't just take one look at him and go, "well, the thing is that you really remind me of my dead girlfriend so now I legally have to adopt you"

VESPA WAS SO SOFT THIS EP ;; I lover her sm I love her and buddy I love them communicating I love vespa comforting buddy who is allowing herself to be vulnerable for once

Speaking OF, aside from just the fantastic character development for buddy and the point abt her being a narcissist needing to listen to Her Own Goddamn Advice

The parallels between her and nureyev were more prominent than EVER this episode!! Jet suggesting that she leave him in command!! Her bit about her persona only ever having been a mask!! Saying that she's one of the best equipped people to spot an act in progress because she's done it herself for so long!! The obsession with being Good Enough and keeping up that flawless persona!! LIKE MOTHER LIKE SON GIVE ME THIS CONTENT

NUREYEV HATERS GET WRECKED

He had so much good shit this episode. First of all he actually sounded like capital N Nureyev, not ransom or anyone else. Second of all he was so willing to put himself in harm's way for this heist!! He's acting so much like he was when he was younger, desperate to get the job done, insisting he can do it even when it's obvious he's overreaching because he wants it so badly

Also vespa calling nureyev selfish and saying that she bets he's never sacrificed anything in his life?? When I say I shouted OUCH out loud jesus christ

Like okay do I think the debt subplot is gonna come to a head next episode (juno's episode)?? Absolutely. Do I think that nureyev is gonna try to make a break for it with the four items now that they've finished the heist? YUP. Do I also think he's doing it because he's scared and is trying to do as little harm as possible while trying to protect himself? YEAH.

His speech about symbols being all anyone has and just,, ooooof god. God. Someone give this poor man a hug

I definitely need to listen to this ep again at LEAST once. Jesus. Spent the whole thing bouncing up and down and screaming. In fact I think I have given myself a headache by overheating my brain so I will add more to this Later

Thoughts after the fact:

What vespa was saying about nureyev acting differently..... could be read as him being nervous but I can't help but think with him having been talking in his own voice all episode, what if he just wasn't putting up a persona? I don't think it would be much of a leap to think that nureyev in actuality is much quieter than the personalities he wears, but idk, just a thought

This is further to discussions that were had on the tpp adults server but uhh juno is So smart and should have been listened to earlier not just in this episode, but like going back to part one he's been pointing out buddy's questionable decisions she's made to put off this heist for almost the whole year!! I know..... that jet has been lined up as buddy's successor...... but like idk I feel like that's not a role that suits jet rly?? Yes, he's calm and steady and logical but he doesn't have buddy's strategic mind or charisma, and yes I am saying this because nureyev does and I want this to be plot relevant besides making for interesting parallels

Vespa is so excited abt the prime ;; Like SO excited, which is so sweet, but also I’m very very interested in that writing on the bottom

She’s so SOFT with buddy as well, and so calm...... I’m cry I’m cry she’s just like “okay, so you’ve got a problem, let’s fix it then”

“We’ve all had to put up with juno and ransom [acting like newlyweds] long enough” YELL. The fond family ragging of it all but also jupeter confirmed for completely insufferable

Couple of additional things:

I find.... nureyev’s little speech abt symbols and stuff rly interesting. Idk my running theory abt his debts is that his name is being used as leverage against him with the stipulation being “if you don’t pay, we’ll release your name and face to the public” meaning not only will he be in danger, but brahma as well, if we assume that the GAS has been deactivated since he left. The symbol he left behind is the only thing keeping the citizens of brahma safe - and not even that tbh, it’s only providing the illusion of safety, if this is actually the case. Idk I really wanna get my hands on the script now I think that speech says a lot abt his mental state rn

WHO ELSE ON THE CREW HAS MEDICAL SECRETS VESPA?

Legitimately though what reason is there for any of the crew to distrust nureyev from their perspective? He's never done anything to actively harm or trick any of them, and he's pretty upfront about the fact that ransom isn't his real name....... the only reason people distrust him so much is that he's so secretive about himself, but like, there's no reason for them to assume he's even hiding anything bad from an in-universe perspective other than he has a large amount of debt and Maybe that would be incentive for a double cross, but the rest of the crew didn't hear that phone call and have no real reason to suspect him of anything

I got distracted from my original point but I keep thinking about the inevitable confrontation that's got to happen next episode and how vespa is probably gonna bring up the name thing again and how that's gonna go down considering she really doesn't have a leg to stand on about her suspicions, no evidence aside from a gut feeling and paranoia...... this isn't me hating on vespa I love her a lot I just REALLY want nureyev to actually like, get mad about how she treats him bc I think part of the reason they're all so mistrustful of him is that he doesn't do things like that, doesn't ever really rock the boat (or spaceship, lol) and that can come off as disingenuous - unlike, say, juno, who is very vocal in complaining about everything and so everyone knows where he stands in a situation

I got distracted again. The Point is that I want to see nureyev actually let the mask slip for a second and show some emotion to someone who isn't juno, and I really want that confrontation with vespa bc I feel like that's the only way they're ever gonna settle their issues and I want!! Everyone!! To be friends!!

Oh man I forgot about the stuff I was thinking about this morning about the oldtown trio

About how in terms of character arcs juno has hit his rock bottom (at least once) and is now in the process of recovering and growing for the better, and it's set up in the night before that mick is kind of doing the same...... he's got a new calling and he's getting out of the rut he was in

So like.... following that pattern..... sasha really hasn't hit that low point yet as far as we know. She joined law enforcement to try to make a difference the same way juno did but rather than going down in a burst of flame like juno I would say she's gone through a gradual shifting of morals from actually wanting to help people in a concrete way to pursuing higher and higher positions under the guise of a "greater good" that isn't actually helping anyone. I'd be willing to bet the first step she took in that direction was what pushed her and juno apart all those years ago

Point is imo sasha probably thinks she's been going up in the world over the last fifteen years when in terms of morals she's not been going anywhere good, and she hasn't realised that yet, and unlike the other two of the trio, she hasn't hit a low point in terms of character arc..... so basically what I'm saying is I think maybe that low point for her is gonna be something that we might get this season, and maybe as a result of her realising how far her morals have drifted from her roots, most likely as a result of being brought into conflict with juno again as a result of dark matters' beef with the aurinkos

I thought so before but like, this is definitely dark matters, has to be. Kidnapping an entire crew of fugitives and crashing their ship into a planet in a way that looks like an accident to hide the evidence has them written all over it

I say kidnapped bc between the fact that the bot was only using a sedative instead of poison and it saying "we could have taken you all alive", that was definitely what they were aiming for

I find it interesting that it's specifically mentioned that the carte blanche is ( was? :( ) a converted cruise ship, I feel like that was said for a reason. My main thought at the moment being that cruise ships must have some form of lifeboats, but then surely all spacecraft must have those?

Gonna say right now I don't think vespa's dead, I don't think the writers are the type to bury their gays and especially not after she was already presumed dead once before and only just got back. It rly wouldn't be narratively satisfying here and I trust them not to pull something like that

Who's up next episode though is the question I think. Part of me is thinking buddy bc if vespa is presumed dead, that's gonna rock her pretty badly, but we also haven't heard from rita yet? I think juno is probably gonna be saved for last so my bet is on one of those two

Also I wonder if we're gonna get to hear juno's memo collection at some point....... I'm not convinced it'll happen but I would love to hear them. Would be a very fun retrospective but maybe not an interesting episode lol

Nureyev's real name is DEFINITELY gonna come up some time soon I think, jet saying that he or vespa have been around long enough to probably have heard of him (or maybe even mag?) made me think so even more. If it is dark matters that has them maybe they even know who he is and it'll come up that way, who knows (but oh man I would like to). It's one of the last things causing discord between the crew now that vespa seems to have decided juno is at least partway trustworthy so like!! Hmm!!!!

I've been thinking a lot about the one part at the end of ultrabots pt 2 where rita says "you know yourself better than anyone else" and nureyev says to himself after she leaves "that's just the problem isn't it"

Bc at first listening I read it as "no-one else knows the shit I'm about to pull" but the more I think about it the more it reads to me as "I'm supposed to know myself better than anyone and yet not even I know what I'm going to do next"..... bc I honestly think that nureyev's identity issues are gonna play a big part in however this resolves, he's at a moral crossroads like the kind buddy talked about in man in glass rn and tbh I don't think even he knows which direction he's going to choose yet. Even in the episode they call attention to something fundamental in his approach to problem solving, which is that when backed into a corner he works out every escape route possible and keeps all of his options open until the best one becomes clear (or something goes very wrong)

Basically I don't think he's made his choice yet about what he's going to do and that line is really reflective of the questions he's having to ask himself rn - everyone around him has their conception of who they think he is, and he doesn't know which (if any of them) are right, not even himself

They always manage to really surprise me with these episode concepts tbh it's always something different and I love that

Jet is so protective of the ruby? Amazing subtlety of voice acting there tbh, the difference in tone when jet is talking about not letting the ruby go/not having let it get this damaged before is only barely noticeable but there's a lot of emotion behind it

Speaking of which what the Hale is up with it?? I did wonder at the end of last ep whether it would have been able to save everyone while still tied down and it seems like?? Maybe it did?? Somehow???

Idk if this ties in with what rita was talking about with the book being the closest thing humanity has to a true AI cause like the ruby is definitely not Just A Car

Vespa doesn't seem to be doing okay huh ;; I had hoped that maybe she'd be feeling a bit better about herself after the end of last ep but this makes sense, I still hope she manages to work through this soon though....... I hope buddy is doing okay too oh god she must be hurting

I rbed a post last week talking about that dynamic of a character who's obviously an idiot (not that I would ever rly call rita an idiot) and one who seems sane, but is actually just as bad and joked that this was the forbidden dynamic but LITTLE DID I KNOW

I have one single complaint about this episode and that is that I found the robot voices really hard to understand/listen to...... I had to turn my audio all the way up to make out what anyone was saying and at that point the volume was making my ears hurt ):

I had been wondering about rita's episode, specifically what flaw of hers her episode would be addressing? Seeing as that seems to be the pattern here, with nureyev's self-isolation, jet's struggling with/repressing his past, and vespa's struggle to trust people/come to terms with her new way of life. So far it seems like the issue is that she's just straight up out of touch with the others and maybe a little selfish? She's more focused on how she thinks things should go than on what would be practical as evidenced with the robots in particular, idk maybe these eps rly are gonna be just pure comedy relief but I'm interested to see how that develops

Especially with her saying it's better to ask forgiveness than permission, idk I think maybe rita knows how smart she is perhaps a little too much? I love her but they've kind of gone in half-cocked here

I wonder if this ties back to her mother in any way, too..... cause we know rita's mother was, if nothing else, someone who used to make homemade bombs, idk what kind of lessons she was teaching her kid lmao

Anyway this ep was such a nice change of pace I loved it I'm so excited for the next one although I'm more than a little worried about what buddy is going to have to say about this when it's all over lmao
